The Inheritance Far From Home

Rate this book
After 25 years of marriage, Barbie Stopford thought she knew everything about her husband. Turns out, Eddie saved his biggest secret for after he died.

When a dusty legal document reveals he left her a hidden estate in Bakewell, England, Barbie does something that shocks everyone, including She books two last-minute tickets and drags her reluctant daughter across the Atlantic.

Florence isn't thrilled—but after a summer she’d rather forget, a spontaneous trip to a storybook English village might be exactly what she needs.

The estate is grand. The locals claim it’s haunted. And the quiet groundskeeper seems to know more about Eddie’s past than Barbie ever did.

As the women uncover clues tucked between cozy garden paths and pints at the village pub, they begin to piece together a version of Eddie neither of them expected. And when Florence finds herself drawn to the groundskeeper’s son (who’s as kind as he is charming), it's a refreshing change from the life she's been pretending to live.

In this strange place, far from home, they both start to wonder if this detour was part of the healing all along.

Some inheritances come with strings attached. This one comes with buried secrets, uncomfortable truths, and the chance to finally stop running from their grief.

This is Book 1 in a brand-new, heartfelt, clean and wholesome series. Scroll up to begin reading today!

So bizarre— thought I was reading a novel , and I was but it is split into 6 books that are hardly longer than a short story. The whole thing was a cliche.

The Inheritance Far From Home is an enjoyable, emotionally resonant beginning to a series. It strikes a warm balance between mystery, romance, and healing after loss. It doesn’t aim to shock or deeply complicate; rather, it wants to provide comfort, gentle intrigue, emotional connection, and the promise of more to come.
If I were rating it, I’d give it ★★★½‑★★★★☆ (3.5‑4 stars) depending on how much you like clean, warm romance with a sprinkle of mystery.

short click bait

This is one of those "books" that is the length of a chapter and then they want you to go to another book. Just write one book and make them chapters for goodness sake.

The saga is to be continued...in book 2!

This is a rather short introduction to the rest of the 6 book tale at only 83 pages. I read it in less than 2 hours.
This begins with Barbie talking to her boss at the firm she is an office assistant in. I think that's right. I suppose that isn't too important really. Her boss is practically begging Barbie to take some time off of work for herself. I'm under the impression she works a whole lot.

Barbie's husband passed away a year ago and she only took half of her allotted bereavement time off. Her daughter Florence "Flo" is out of college for the year and flew in to visit with her mother for a couple weeks, or so.

Flo called her mother at work to tell her the basement flooded so Barbie hurries home to clean up. The two decide to to through the boxes they had saved from being drenched and in one of the boxes are letters from her husband's parents that are asking he return home to the UK - they are currently in America.

Barbie and Flo ultimately discover Ed owned a property in the UK and now that he's deceased the property belongs to Barbie.

So, Barbie buys 2 plane tickets for her and Flo to go check the property out. They arrive at the address listed in Ed's will and find out something crazy!

Now it's time to find out more info...

Barbie needs a break from work, but the shock of learning that her husband inherited property in England, but never mentioned it, throws her. Her secretive horrible daughter comes home and just when they get to England the book abruptly ends.

I didn't dislike the story nor the characters. However, it was disconcerting to start getting into it and then having to hop back online to get the next chapter. Seriously these are chapters, not books and because the title is long and the number is toward the end (not to mention the cover art identical) you have to click on a few before you get the right next one. This was so distracting that I stopped reading at #3. I think I would have stuck it out if they had been one book - but that is just conjecture.
The ghost story part was not super compelling but the house itself was interesting.
If it had not been a kindle unlimited offering; and I had purchased the book, I would have been livid. It should be clear on the description that it is more of a serial sort of offering as opposed to a novel. It is not even a novella because there is no end or story arch completed in each section.

Before you get into this, know there are 6 books, all under 90 pages. So you keep having to stop, go back to Amazon and return the book and borrow the next one. The author's time line isn't too good, as if she gets mixed up as to when things happen.
Every book has its annoying cliche. In this series, every character clicks their tongue. It happens several times during each book and it's getting on my nerves.
If I hadn't wanted to find out what happens by the end I would have thrown this over. And even so it's not that well written. I was just looking for a mindless read between heavy stuff to take my mind off current events.

Not a complete novel

This is more like a long chapter of a book. It sets up a storyline and ends where the second chapter would begin.
I hate this technique of selling books and would not recommend it to anyone. The story and characters aren’t strong enough for a good novel either.

Interesting novella

This author is a first for me. I enjoyed the storyline and the intriguing mystery of Barbara's husband.

How she and her daughter Flo stumble upon an inheritance in another country brings the book alive.

Unfortunately, we have to read the next book to find out what is going to happen. It sounds interesting to me.

It is an interesting read with bits of the next series at the end of the first book. I’m just getting used to the characters and the storyline but want to continue on to book number two and see what happens. I am hoping that Barbie gets some more backbone.

not a book

I thought this would be an interesting book to read. It’s not a book but a chapter. I will not be downloading every chapter to continue reading the story. Very disappointed.

Gripping details

Who wouldn't want to find out they inherited a castle in England? The story grips you from the start and you are along for the ride until you reach the castle with the girls. Only complaint was that it was too short.

amusing and interestng

Fun to get to know widow and daughter. There is much mystery to be discovered in the next few books. Interesting to find out the title Eddie had when he was at the castle.

OK, I see what you did Ms. Woods—sucked me in with a 99 cent novella and then hooked me with a fascinating little story so that I want to finish the series! So be it—not sorry. Bring on book 2.

too short

This entire book is like a few chapters long and does not get far into the story before you’re directed to buy book two! Very annoying.

I am just intrigued enough to find all the pieces of this “house”. What really did the Stopford family legacy mean? Why did Edmond hide it all??

Very good first book to draw the reader into the series. The emotions and confusion of dealing with grief are right on the mark.
