Barry Bornemann, son of Joe and Phyllis grew up in country Victoria. Gifted at sport he could have been one of the country cricket team stalwarts but his dreams led him elsewhere. This book is an autobiography of how this young country lad, who liked to dream, ended up leading Wycliffe Bible Translators, Australia.
Borneman is a story teller. This is not a ‘then this happened’ book but a series of yarns that reveal Borneman to be a man of God, generous beyond most people’s imaginations. This is a story, yes it is one story, of one man and his wife, following God’s lead from the moment they met him. This is a story of walking by faith and the humorous ways God, at times. The yarns follow sequentially and reveal the challenges and the risks one family was prepared to take.
Borneman is aware of his gifting and writes helpfully about how the different giftings work together. This comes through in the tales about his work with various people. I found this aspect of the book enlightening as it is not often, charismatic leaders can identify what gives them the oomph to lead well.
Love this book. The stories are real, honest and so full of hope. A true blue Aussie and storyteller. It gave me many things to think about regarding my own life and my experience and understanding of God. There is a print out sheet that goes with it called Tell Your Story that is useful in thinking through your story either in groups or alone. Highly recommend
