Aria was never supposed to be special. Just a caffeine-addicted barista with too many opinions and one unbreakable rule: never trust her brother’s best friend. Life was manageable, until Sloan walked in. Charming. Dangerous. Addictive. What began as a fairy tale quickly turned into a nightmare of control, isolation… and something much darker. When everything shatters, it’s Nicholas — arrogant, infuriating, and inhuman — who saves her. And with one reckless choice, he binds her life to his in a way that neither of them can undo. Now Aria’s body is changing. Her rage is rising. And something ancient is waking in her blood. She thought she was human. She was wrong. Broken Blood is the explosive first book in The Hollow Blood Series — a dark fantasy romance filled with obsession, forbidden desire, and a bond that could destroy them both.
P. Carreira writes dark fantasy romance where magic is visceral and love is dangerous. Her stories weave the sensual with the sinister, blending emotional intensity with supernatural intrigue. Born in Portugal and now living in Switzerland, she crafts worlds where monsters bleed, lovers burn, and scars turn into power.
A lifelong reader of fantasy, she grew up searching for darker, more romantic stories—and now writes them herself: raw, haunting, and unflinching. An incurable dark romantic, she doesn’t dream—she has nightmares, and she turns them into stories.
GUYS I AM SHOUTING RN BECAUSE THIS BOOK!!! THIS BOOK!! "You don't get to touch my woman" AHHHHHHHH I absolutely bloody (lol 🧛🏻♀️) adored this book! It's like True Blood X The Vampire Diaries, it's dark and sexy with characters you cant help but get attached too, it has some incredible snarky witty banter that had me giggling and kicking my feet, the heavy themes are dealt with sensitivity and care, and the worldbuilding is so vast and detailed it felt completely real, I finished this in 2 days I couldn't put it down and I can't stop thinking about it! If you love dark romance, vampires, fae, forced proximity, hidden powers, touch her and die, hidden identity AHHHHH NEED I GO ON FRIENDS
uggghh okay. i really was loving this book, couldn’t put it down, was obsessed with nick and his little side comments, loved the tension so much and then poof!…all the tension was gone and it was just ‘let’s find out what’s wrong with aria but let’s drag it out for over two hundred pages!’ 😞 i almost dnfed this so many times but pushed through and..im not sure it was worth it. 😣 i wish the forbidden ‘in love with my best friends little sister’ trope stuck around longer. i was living for it. 🙂↕️🤭
‘No smirk this time. Just watching. Like he always did. Like he couldn’t fucking help himself. And, God help me, neither could I.’
‘She was right there, but she felt a million miles away.’
Why are more people not talking about this book?! Urban Dark romantasy, hidden identity, found magic, vampires, and fae! Did I mention brother’s best friend, this one is for my Damon Salvatore loving book besties! The plot twists just kept coming, the pacing was perfect, there’s some political intrigue. I cannot wait for book 2 to see the revenge arc!
I can't do it anymore. I feel so bad because I powered through the first 20 chapters in a day and after she finally left the abuse it just fell down hill fast.
Things I loved: Mostly her sassy attitude and the hate banter between her and Nick. Unfortunately I think that was probably the only thing I loved. Other than that the way the abusive relationship was portrayed was spot on to how it can be in a relationship like that (speaking from experience).
This I hated: I'm sorry this might be a long list. - The repetitiveness of paragraphs. I showed my group chat 1 page and even they noticed it. The exact same paragraph was written 3 times in a different way. Like the author had to over explain something to a 3 year old. - In another chapter the words "He wrecked me" was mentioned 5 times. - Nick's surname. Is it Saint or White? and also is his middle name Fucking? because Nicolas Fucking Saint and Nicolas Fucking White was both mentioned twice each - The relationship between her and Nick. They hated... SHE hated him since she was 12, no mention as to why she hated him, just that she did and then instantly they are in love. Maybe it's because he was the 1st to take care of her after she escaped I don't know. - The fact she apologised to her brother for her abusive relationship and he said nothing. I'm sorry... what?
I wanted to be so excited for this book, and it was fairly interesting at first. But I just have no desire to continue after 200 pages (about 40%).
Nothing is really explained or delved deep into. The FMC is told by the MMC that he’s a vampire. At first, she is like “wtf” asks like 3 questions and moves on like that isn’t a life changing piece of information about this person you’ve know your whole life? And it’s like that for all of what I read. Also very wishy-washy feelings from all the characters- one minute she hates Nick, the next she doesn’t.
They’re supposed to hate each other at first, but it’s never explained why.
An editor is also probably needed. I think having one and fleshing out some conversations would go a long way with this.
A few things I noticed which bothered me (personally - and yes, some are nit-picky): - The over use of the description “something” - it was always “something changed between us”, “something passed on their expression”, etc. tell me what it is, please! I get not wanting to spoil everything but there are other words to use. - A word that is used over 1,000 times in the book is “fuck” - love a good use of the word but it’s just about every other word that Nick said. - With how often italics are used, the whole book might as well be italicized. - One of the biggest bothers for me was we do not learn the FMC’s name until the 2nd chapter even though we are in her POV. You are introduced to Ethan and Nick in chapter 1, but don’t learn Ethan is her brother and Nick is his bestie until chapter 2 too. - Last thing I noticed, there are a few instances where FMC called Nick by, what I assume was originally going to be his last name “Nick Saint” but then a bit later, people start referring to him as “Nick White, which continues on through the book. I assume that was just missed in the authors own editing.
Thank you for giving me the opportunity to read this early! - this book was utterly✨️, completely✨️ undeniably✨️ (iykyk) an experience and I enjoyed every second of it. The character building at the first half of the book really built my connection to the FMC and I love the way characters interact overall in their individual relationships. Only reason I am giving it 4 stars and not 5 is because, for me, some elements of the world building felt rushed or not fully explained. Looking forward to the next book!
This vampire romantasy had so many things I wasn’t expecting! You get vampires and fae, sealed portals that should never be opened, and powerful female characters who rule their worlds. The MMC gives total “touch her and die” energy, which I loved. I laughed a lot and was shocked just as much. If you’re looking to satisfy your vampire craving, this one will definitely do the trick!
Oh my word!!! When I tell you I was HOOKED from page one!! I absolutely could not stop reading. And the ending? I am SHOOK. I need to know what comes next more than I need dinner.
1.75 ⭐️ I was loving this book until I wasn’t. I get suspending believe but some of the things in this were ridiculous and the fmc and mmc started to get on my nerves. She was so childish. I felt like a lot of the characters personalities didn’t match who they were. I literally only finished because of how far I got.
I was lucky enough to be an ARC reader for Broken Blood and I absolutely loved it!! 🙌 I honestly haven’t read anything quite like this before, which made it such a fun and refreshing read.
The banter and sarcasm had me hooked (and grinning way too often 🙃). I adored Aria’s character, and Nicholas quickly became another favorite. Both had such great dynamics that made the story even more addictive. ( don’t want to spoil anything so I’ll 🤐 )
Book one did such a great job setting up this world and giving just enough to keep me intrigued, but also left me desperate for more. Because seriously…that ending?! Come on 👀😆
If you’re looking for something unique, full of snark, and with characters you’ll get attached to quickly, definitely pick this up. I can’t wait to see where the rest of the series goes!❤️
Words can’t even begin to describe how much I devoured this novel 🖤🧛♀️ From the characters to the themes to the writing… everything felt so good. If you’re looking for a vampire romance with magic, love, and twists that keep you on your toes, you need to sink your teeth into this one 🩸✨ If you’re a vampire or magic girly, you’ll love this 🖤📚 I already can’t wait for book two and to see where this story goes next 🥀
So frickin good!!! I cannot wait to read the others!!! I was all over the map emotionally while reading and loved every moment! Please read the trigger warnings as some content is difficult. I love the characters, the drama, the bickering, smart-ass remarks….. loved it all! Very well written!
I was selected as an arc reader for this and I was SO excited for it! I also hate posting bad reviews and will do everything I can to try and find a silver lining to redeem a book. I know how much blood sweat and tears can be put into a story and I never ever want to undermine all that hard work. That being said, I struggled with this one. I wanted to DNF it so many times. But I was like no, this is an arc, it needs its due diligence so I pushed on.
Pros: -the plot line was awesome. I really liked where it was going and it has some serious potential. There were even a few twists that I was a little surprised by which is relatively rare for me. -the abuse arc for fmc was solid. It felt like I lived it along with her and was really seeing it through her eyes. I think the writing there was well thought out and had a strong foundation.
Cons: -the formatting… please please please pick one style of formatting and stick with it. As a reader it’s super jarring to go from one style to another and lose that immersive world aspect. -repeating lines were too much. I can fully understand the emotion that our author wanted to convey, however I really think there are a lot of better ways to go about it that don’t feel like we’re re-reading the same line 3-4 times. -“Purple Prose” okay this one might be personal preference, so please please please ignore me if you don’t think this is accurate. But it seemed like we feel into the age old trap of “show don’t tell” but we got that in the wrong spots. Show me how our characters are feeling, don’t tell me. But what I don’t need to be shown is miscellaneous detail unimportant to the plot. -character movement. Like literally where they physically are in the universe, there were so many times where they would be in one place and then other characters would move and suddenly the first is where they were with zero mention of them moving in their space. Also tracking hands. Again, this can be personal preference but for me it disengaged me from the immersive expertise that the storyline really could have lended. -inconsistent emotions. I understand that we had an enemies to lover vibe, but it was less enemies and more “your general presence irritates me” than true enemies. What is their motive? Why are they enemies, what do they hate each other and what caused them to overcome that obstacle? These elements were missing to give us a true E2L moment that the story really deserved. -character development was super rushed for the plot. I think aria would have had more trauma through the entirety of the book, if not the series. Abuse trauma isn’t undone in a few weeks, it lingers, way longer than even the victim often realizes. There could have been little nuggets of this here and there through the story giving our badass fmc the ability to recognize and overcome these various trauma responses and really expand on her character and why her past doesn’t define her or her future.
Overall opinion (that genuinely doesn’t really matter lol): It’s a great story concept. The delivery just needs a really good polish. I feel like I read a 3rd draft instead of a finished book. I truly feel like if the story was fleshed out more and some of those notes above were addressed there could be a best seller on your hands. It just needs some tender love and care, more detail in the right spots, less filler words, and a really good editor.

HOLY HELL! WHAT. DID. I. JUST. READ?!? I’m actually unwell. I wasn’t ready for this book, and now I don’t even know what to do with myself. I devoured this book in a single sitting... and I regret nothing.
From the first chapter, I was hooked! The writing is sharp, emotional, and addictive. The kind of story that grabs you by the throat and refuses to let go. Every scene feels alive, and the emotions are so raw that I caught myself holding my breath more than once. Aria is such a standout heroine. She feels painfully human, carrying her scars in ways that make her strength hit even harder. And Nicholas… he’s the kind of character who walks off the page and stays in your head long after you’re done. Together, their chemistry is unhinged and unstoppable. It’s not dragged out: it burns from the start, chaotic and consuming, and it works so well.
What really elevates this book is how it balances entertainment with depth. The darker themes aren’t just there for shock, they’re handled with weight and care, woven into the characters’ journeys in a way that makes you feel every choice. And then the romance threads through all that darkness like a live wire: dangerous, addictive, but also achingly human.
The ending?! A masterclass in how to leave your reader destroyed but desperate for more.
This isn’t just a book I enjoyed, it’s a book that made me feel everything. And that’s the mark of something truly special.
Thank you to the author for trusting me with this ARC. Congratulations on such a beautiful, painful, and brilliantly executed work. But no, I will not forgive you for leaving my heart in pieces and my soul in your hands. I cannot wait for the rest of the series and to finally uncover this “key.”
The way this book looked me in the eye, said "I see you," and led me through its emotional wreckage is unreal! Seeing parts of your past self in an FMC can be difficult yet at the same time cathartic. The first portion of this book hit me hard, reminding me how strong we women are!
Aria is spunky and smart but feels like she doesn't belong. The journey she takes is raw and intense. With every obstacle put in her path, she is resilient and brave. Nick. Oh, Nick. Her brother's best friend that she can't stand. Sarcastic, arrogant, and all-around thorn in Aria's side. But is there more to him than that? The sparks these two throw burn hot! The banter is sharp! The yearning is delicious!
Fae, vampires, old magic, portals to other realms. This first book in the Hollow Blood Series gives us a plot filled with tension, secrets, and danger. I was fully invested in this beginning to end! When I got to the end? That cliffhanger? I had to sit and process. The fact I now have to wait to find out what happens? Rude.
**The authors note after the story had me crying cleansing tears, because, me too. I see you, too.** ⚠️There are on page instances of emotional, verbal, and physical abuse (NOT by the MMC) in this story. Please check your TW's before reading.
How do you even start a review for a book that had you by the throat?
Here is a list of messages that I send in real time to the Author while reading:
I don’t like this guy.
THE MOTHERFUCKRRRRR
I liked him from the beginning but now that he’s a MF VAMPIRE!!
‘Oh’
FUCK YESSSS
So something just happened. My favorite romantasy couple of all time are Aelin Galathynius and Rowan Whitethorn and I thought nothing could ever compare. Well girl, you just did it. It compared and I love Nick and Aria about as much as I love them. The whole book so far.
Also it’s around 4 am
SHADOW MOMMYYYY
YOU BETTER BE JOKING!!
You deserve this and I will try everything I can to get as many people to read your book. For many reasons, but mostly because these aren’t just some words written on a piece of paper. Not just imagination. I felt them, I recognized them, they are real. You wrote a fantasy book with supernatural beings, people and world’s that don’t exist, and yet, it felt real. It felt raw.
The first ten chapters tell you a story of an everyday girl, Aria, just trying to get by. She lives with her older brother Ethan and is slinging coffees to pay the bills. She meets a mysterious man, Sloan and its sparks right away! He treats her like a queen and showers her with luxury! She’s immediately under his spell and comforted by his dominance. But the sparks she once loved start to burn and she quickly finds herself on the wrong side his violence. She runs from his house and right into the arms of Nicolas, her brother’s best friend.
Nicolas is her protector and brings such a beacon of light to Aria story! The banter they have will have you cackling and kicking your feet!
The next bit, well let’s just say, it’s other worldly! And damn is it an entire new world! This author builds us a place full of beautiful landscapes and people! The way she crafts vivid landscapes and palaces is extraordinary!
I was honoured to receive this as an ARC. So much feelings that I am still processing and trying my best to not spoil, but when the author says to check your trigger warnings, do it. This book had me crying more than once, and if a story can make me shed tears, then it deserves all the 🌟
The banter in this book had me chuckling many times.
The spice was just the right amount.
Now, I did not know what I was expecting but who the characters are, touched those character topics I have loved FOREVER.
FMC is a mystery I can not wait to learn more about. I would also like to introduce to you my new book boyfriend Nicholas, he's mysterious, he's full of angst, and he, in my mind, is gorgeous.
This is a story that has a mix of old lore with a new twist, and I am here for it.
Can't wait for the 2nd book as it is going to be wild.
Had the plot been remotely interesting, the characters enthralling or the writing anything but repetitive and over-explanatory… then I would have continued (literally just one of these things would have been enough).
This book was recommended to me as an “Enemies to Lovers” which… it was not, at least at the point that I got to. It was simply two mildly annoying individuals that eventually get together, but I digress.
It is meant to be a dual-pov book, but they talk and think the same, which bored me out of my mind and genuinely couldn’t tell the difference between them.
If I read “eyes flickered” / “let out a breath I didn’t know I was holding” / or ANYTHING regarding a description of a silence and how “something shifted” - IT WILL BE TOO SOON.
Thank you to P. Carreira for the opportunity to read this early!
I'm really struggling and conflicted. The story idea/premise is unique, and I love it; the writing is good too.
The thing I'm struggling with is... The story definitely needs to be edited, and normally I'm not super picky about this stuff UNLESS it takes me out of the story. Unfortunately, there were quite a few times where it did. It's not just punctuation or grammar. It is parts of scenes that are repeated, but changed slightly. Almost like the author forgot they wrote the beginning of a scene, and wrote it again.
I feel like with some solid editing, this would be, at least, a solid 4 ⭐ read.
When I say this book had my full attention from start to finish no sh I’m not kidding so much so that the book tabs came out and that hasn’t happened since Haunting Adeline
Absolutely obcessed with the growing relationship between Nick and Aria. I mean I have a thing for vampires at the best of times but one with all Nick qualities 😍🫠🩸and the cliffhanger ending ..cruel just cruel 😝
If your looking for a hot vampire with the touch her and die, she’s mine and will do anything for her vibes then Nick is your next book boyfriend If your looking for a plain Jane barista who hasn’t a clue then Aria is your girl but stick with her because she’s about to blow everyone’s minds Mix in fight scenes with fae, realms, magic, powers and found power and you’ve got Broken Blood your next book obsession
This is book 1 in the Hollow Blood series with books 2 and 3 just around the corner.
I’m not a huge dark romantasy reader , but this one ? I absolutely devoured it ! The plot ? Amazing , the banter ? Perfect , the spice ? Just enough not to overwhelm the amazing plot .
So many twists and turns , I had so many moments where I thought I knew where the story was going , but nope ! It had me on the edge of my seat the whole time .
I absolutely loved the FMC Aria , she’s an absolute baddie , love the banter between her and Nick the MMC . My heart absolutely shattered for her in the beginning chapters of this story, but she handles everything with strength, and determination.
The MMC Nick , oh how absolutely yummy he is. He’s mysterious, protective , and would do anything for Aria .
Totally recommend this book . And a huge thank you to For introducing me to this series ! I absolutely love it.
Great read!! All my favorite tropes!! Brothers best friend, touch her and ☠️! Aria and nick are the main characters. Starts off with awesome banter from aria and her brothers best friend Nick( which is the best)! She works as a coffee barista and meets Sloan at a bar one night. She starts dating him. As she dates this rich man things change. She distances herself from her brother and her own best friend. Until one night her brothers best friend Nick has to save her. This book was so good! Full of all kind of surprises!! If you like vampires , fae, and banter then this is your book! I can’t wait to read the next book! Highly recommend!
I’ve never rated something 5 stars so fast. I cannot wait for book two, This book has been such a rollercoaster. The author takes you on a journey expertly- only looking in the direction she’s pointing until she’s ready to show you something new. Aria is loveable relatable , bad ass, strong, and hilarious. This was such an excellent read that I would reccomend to anyone who loves fantasy/dark romance/ vampires.
It felt long and stretched out when it didn't need to be. The formatting was odd to read. The story was compelling but how the characters progressed was meh. It was good until I got tired of reading it.
I loved this! I read this as my first ARC. It is everything that I had been looking for recently, from the characters to the locations to the plot of other-worldliness. Absolutely loved it, cannot wait for the second book!
