Leave No Trace: An Enemies-to-Lovers, Celebrity Romance

Rate this book
Everybody knows Zack Ryder’s name. Valentine Arnaud hates hearing it.

Valentine Arnaud is being priced out of her beloved mountain town home by rich tourists like movie star Zack Ryder, who built a mansion above Telluride, Colorado. Meanwhile, she only makes enough as a waitress serving ski resort guests to cover gas money for her trusty Subaru. The car is also her summer home, keeping her close to the trails she loves and opportunities to film educational content about the outdoors. So when she sees Zack post a video about feeding the wildlife, she sees red — and claps back in a viral post online.

Focused on preparing for his first film festival as a debut director, the last thing Hollywood darling Zack needs is a PR crisis driven by some local criticizing his wildlife etiquette — all he did was feed a chipmunk! But with the goodwill of his fans on the line, Zack agrees to appear in a series of educational videos. He just didn’t realize the education would be his own…or that he’d be hiking at high altitude with a granola mountain girl whose moods are as unpredictable as the weather.

A night caught in a snowstorm together might change how Valentine and Zack feel about each other. But it doesn’t change Valentine’s distrust for rich people, or Zack’s need for the world to approve of him. When Zack decides climbing one of Colorado’s famous 14,000-foot mountains will prove he’s more than his brand, Valentine agrees to help him to improve her reach. But along the way, the movie star and the mountain girl might discover that working toward a common goal will bring them together.

In Alicia Wilder’s new novel, you follow two storylines: Valentine, a small-town girl who loves hiking in the mountains of Telluride but has never left her hometown, and Zack, a Hollywood movie star completely absorbed in acting and directing. When a video goes viral, their lives suddenly collide. Will they clash until the very end—or discover some common ground along the way?

I was really excited to start this book. I’m always up for an enemies-to-lovers story, and since this one also centers around hiking and nature, it felt like a perfect mix. But as I kept reading, my excitement slowly faded. Unfortunately, I couldn’t connect with either of the main characters.

Take Valentine, for example. She’s passionate about nature and chooses to live in her car so she can camp freely in the mountains. I love that idea and completely get the appeal. But her actions often contradicted her words: she regularly relies on her parents’ house for laundry, a warm bed when it’s too cold, or a roof over her head when her car breaks down. That made her “living free” lifestyle feel less convincing to me.

With Zack, I was intrigued at first, expecting a charmingly arrogant movie star. Instead, he turned out to be overly soft and quite simple-minded. Sure, I get that celebrities often have people taking care of things for them—but not knowing how to cook some pancakes? I wished his character had a bit more edge, something that matched both his career and his image.

That said, I did enjoy the small-town mountain setting. Wilder has a real talent for capturing the atmosphere of the place and the people in it. The writing flows easily, and the romance develops in a gentle slow burn from start to finish.

In the end, though, Leave No Trace just wasn’t the right book for me.

Thank you Alicia Wilder and Happily Books PR for de ARC.

Whew. Let me just start by saying—this book doesn’t walk into your life, it storms in with combat boots and a mission. Alicia Wilder spins a story that’s equal parts heart-pounding suspense and jaw-clenching romance, where danger is always lurking and secrets refuse to stay buried.

From page one, the tension grips you. The characters aren’t just names on a page—they’re layered, flawed, and carrying pasts heavy enough to sink them. And when their worlds collide? Sparks. Fireworks. The kind of chemistry that makes you want to fan yourself while simultaneously yelling at them to watch their backs.

The pacing? Nonstop. One minute you’re piecing together clues, the next you’re dodging bullets (figuratively… and sometimes literally). Wilder doesn’t believe in lulls—she keeps the adrenaline high and your trust on edge, because in this world, no one is safe and nothing is certain.

I received an ARC copy of this book. I waffled between 4 and 5 stars only because 5 stars is like, a perfect book, the ideal, the pinnacle, nothing can compare, but 4 stars implies that something is lacking. As you can see from the long review and my *deep thoughts* on some of the secondary characters, there was nothing lacking in this book for me. Since Goodreads doesn't allow for fractions of a star I gotta kick it up to 5.

This antagonists to lovers romance novel (I can’t really consider them enemies, and I liked it that way, though properly speaking it does fit the bill of the enemies to lovers genre) surprised me with how much I keep thinking about these characters. Valentine is a lifelong resident of Telluride living, if not the full dirtbagger lifestyle at least dirtbagger adjacent, mostly spending nights camping on public land and living out of her Subaru. Zack is a movie star known for his action flicks making a sincere effort to pivot to directing an artistic drama. Their meeting frame story starts over a social media post Zack makes and a video response by Valentine, kicking off the “wealthy outsider versus scrappy local in a mountain town” plot. The animosity between them is piquant enough to make their eventual enemies to lovers arc satisfying but not so over the top to be unbelievable. The POV is shared between them and both have flaws and insecurities on display. There is some miscommunication, but it's cleared up in a realistic and fairly quick way. Both the FMC and the MMC are likable people with good intentions at the end of the day. As is the case with most romances the chemistry between them builds fairly quickly, but it's tempered by their self awareness.

And now I would like to get into my thoughts on some of the background characters, and I'm hiding it behind a spoiler tag, not because it spoils the plot so much, but because if you'd rather meet everyone in the book without my deep thoughts, you should get the chance.

As a hiker I was also eager to read this book and it didn't disappoint on that front either. The hiking was crunchy, the plot was chewy, and the spice was just like your favorite chai latte, not too hot but not too sweet either.

Leave No Trace is a unique movie star x small town local romance. It was definitely enemies-to-lovers though I wish the transition to lovers was a bit longer. Yes, there were feelings developing but it wasn’t explored as well before the physical relationship showed up. Zack’s character was great in that he wasn’t the confident, cocky movie star you were expecting, but a vulnerable man with insecurities. Valentine had a “mad at the world” attitude that clashed with most everyone. It was fun to follow their journey and wonder how in the world they were going to work it out. The epilogue was a great addition, I wanted more!

Thanks to the author for an early copy of this book. All opinions are my own!

Thank you so much to Alicia and Happily Booked for this ARC!

I loved book and I connected to Valentine almost immediately. Her outlook on wildlife and saving wild places is beautiful and commendable. The way she reacted to Zack. A big shot movie star, feeding a chipmunk started a snow ball and this grumpy/anxious, enemies to lovers relationship was born. 👏🏼

I love how she helped him come out of his anxiety and makes him see that there is more to life and that she is worth fighting for. Their relationship was up and down but eventually with training sessions on climbing a literal mountain for a set of nature videos, that mountain becomes a metaphor for real life. Their HEA was exactly what they deserved. 👏🏼

Leave No Trace is a small town opposite attracts enemies to lovers romance. This is Valentine and Zach’s story filled with unexpected challenges and connections. I love how Valentine is an outdoorsy person who just wanted to educate Zach on wildlife and help him out with finding himself. Zach is the complete opposite, he’s an actor/director and wanted to be more than what he is. I love when they finally worked/trained together for a climb of their life, both for themselves and for their careers. I really enjoyed their story and would love to read more.

Valentine and Zack are complete opposites. He's a big Hollywood movie star and she's a small town bar tender. He's in town to debut his first film as a director at Telluride's film festival. They butt heads but his PR company wants them to work together to better his image. They grow closer but know they are not compatible long-term and he heads back to LA. What will happen when Zack wants he help to climb a mountain and his feelings never really faded?

I wanted to love this one. I did. It just wasn’t for me. The romance felt flat, and very start and stop. Maybe if the pacing was a little better I would have enjoyed it more.

It wasn’t a bad book, i wouldnt warn someone off of it. BUT… i also probably won’t find myself suggesting it.

I was gifted an ARC copy in exchange for my honest opinion.

I loved reading this book as an ARC thanks to @aliciabwilder and @happilybookedpr it was a fun and cozy book that takes you back to nature’s finest.
I really loved the character building throughout. Valentine goes from bitchy kenau to educated guide, while Zach overcomes his anxiety and becomes way more confident in what he wants with his life. That he is not just a pretty face and amazing body.
Now I want to climb a 14’er too!

I don't know where to begin. This didn't hold my interest. It was difficult to finish. The narrative was not my cup of tea. The idea was there, I understand the opposites attract trope, enemies to lovers, but this one didn't deliver that, at least, not for me. The main couple were.. weird. Valentine, I guess she was 22 and Zack 30, actor and secret germaphobe, rambled and were awkwardly placed together. The interactions, language of these characters was immature at times. The constant bickering, back and forth, wasn't cute, but mean.

I didn't like Valentine, a woman obsessed with her car ((give it a rest already)), she lives out of said car, cares about the environment, which was fine, and yet, she does things that contradict that choice of lifestyle. She was far from being bohemian or a free spirit b/c that girl was rude, condescending, and obnoxious. She thought she was superior to Zack, who made a mistake of feeding a wild chipmunk, which he filmed and uploaded. So begins the uneven trajectory of meeting and solving her online feud with him by working together.😨😬😑 Word of advice: act like adults, have a grown up conversation instead of whatever this was.

With Zack being worried about the lines on Valentine's face and smelling like baby wipes, not to worry Valentine does change her underwear everyday, how was this supposed to be attractive or romantic?! Eww.🤢 That's gross. Temptation? Zack maybe 30, but this man doesn't know how to take care of a woman since he was the one always being cared for first. Those are his words in the book. Do you want a man who can't take care of himself, let alone you? And the conversation Zack had with Valentine's Dad who mentioned to him about s3x with Valentine's Mom Valkyrie... Uhh. No. Just no!!🤦🏼 Why go there? Valentine's comments toward Zack: "you want him to look stupid in this video?" Or "main thing is to prepare and not be an idiot." I don't know about you but nobody wants to be called stupid or an idiot. I can't. This book wasn't for me. You want to read it, by all means, you should. Maybe you'll enjoy it. Good luck. Happy reading.*•>§<•*🏞️🏞️

This was a good read. I loved how the book transports the reader to this quiet, mountainous, small-town where the author’s beautiful descriptions of the town had me smelling the pine trees and feeling the crunch of the gravel under my feet. It was just so beautiful.

In this book we meet two people who are complete opposites. First, we have Zack, a popular actor who has spent most of his life in the limelight. Valentine, on the other hand is an outdoorsy beauty who has never left her small town and loves living out of her car. Protecting nature is her number one goal. Some call her a grump, but she doesn’t care because she would happily choose the wilderness over people any day. After their worlds collide in the most unexpected way, they are forced to work together, and their clashing temperaments make for one unforgettable adventure.

Because Zack was an actor I expected him to be cocky and arrogant and over the top, but he really surprised me. He was an overall nice guy and my favorite thing about him was how much, as time went on, he opened up to Valentine. He learned to trust her and be vulnerable with her and I really liked that.

Valentine was for sure a grumpy FMC. At times, her grumpiness made for really funny banter between her and Zack but at other times, it had me asking, “Who hurt you?” Yeah, she was kind of mean at times. As the story progressed, we learn that Valentine felt like she had not done enough in her life; like the person she was wasn’t enough. But through her work with Zack, she learned that she was enough and that it’s ok to take chances and to trust others who may be different from you. I really liked her character progression in the story.

Overall, this was a cute and enjoyable read. I loved that these were two people who felt like they could not be themselves with other people, came together, and though they were complete opposites, they ended up being the perfect match for each other. I recommend this read and look forward to reading more from Alicia Wilder.

What a love letter to Colorado and the restorative power of nature. This book made me want to climb a mountain and swim in a cold clear lake.

I enjoyed getting to know the mountains of Telluride and the quirky side characters. I loved how Wilder enmeshed LGTBQ+ representation into the story. I also thought the behind-the-scenes snippets of the business of movie-making and film festivals were delightful and accurate!. The descriptions of Colorado were so vivid and gorgeous. I was fascinated and am now anxious to visit that state and explore.

What was missing for me involves Valentine and Zack. I had a hard time understanding and connecting to Valentine. I couldn’t get a handle on exactly why she was so angry with Zack in the beginning. I didn’t fully understand her relationship with her parents or her car, Blucifer (which is another marvelous Colorado legend). I also was not clear on what her ultimate goals were. Her professional journey felt incredibly confusing and disjointed from the beginning of the novel to the conclusion. Zack’s motivations were clearer to me, and I really liked the representation of his anxiety disorder and how isolating and identity-confusing extreme celebrity must be. His relationship with Valentine felt less clear - I think I wanted more slow burn beneath the animosity or more of an “ah hah” moment for him. Their collaboration and eventual HEA was lovely, but it felt a little too surprising.

This was a sweet book and the tourist bureau should use it for a visit Colorado campaign. I just missed some connections with the characters and their motivations. It won’t be the last book of Wilder’s I’ll read, though.

I received an advance review copy for no cost from the author, and I am leaving this review voluntarily. All opinions are my own.

Leave No Trace by Alicia Wilder (ARC Review)

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This was a fun, quick read with a background of beautiful scenery and intense autumnal vibes which will entice you to go for a walk in nature.

The enemies-to-lovers felt Lizzie/Darcy-adjacent and I was so happy when they started to see through their own prejudices and stop allowing pride to keep them from letting each other in (see what I did there 😉).

Zack struggles with anxiety and germ phobias (which I personally relate to) whilst handling the duality of being a famous actor in the public eye.

Valentine is a militant protector of her home town and the nature surrounding it but she is also struggling with expectations and loneliness.

No one is one thing and this opposites attract story quickly proves that there’s always more to people than your initial impression.

This has found family, anxiety rep and a diverse cast of side characters that you will fall in love with. I particularly loved how valuable being trusted by Zack came to be, being trusted with his true smile is something Valentine does not take for granted and it’s such a sweet part of this book.

The classic one bed at an inn during a snow storm scenario is done really well and there is a particular scene in a hot spring that has so much yearning it jumps off the page.

Overall a really enjoyable read, do yourself a favour and add it to your TBR 🍁

Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐
Zack and Valentine both live in different worlds. Zack a famous actor debuting directing his first film and Valentine who lives in her car and is at one with nature and has no time for egotistical people in general particularly someone who bought land and built a property he stays in for two weeks of the year. After Valentine makes a video highlighting Zack's inability to survive in the mountains and countryside they end up making a video together. During which a snow storm places then together. Afterwards Valentine decides that they cannot be together because they are too different. He living in LA and her in Telluride. Zack comes back to climb a mountain together and show her it is possible.
Although the book is mainly about them finally getting together I felt more could have been made of how it worked once they did decide to be together.
Also one of the characters was referred to as they and I first thought it was a typo but then got a bit confused and wasn't sure if they were referring to more than one person. The explanation wasn't clear until about half way through the book and I would have preferred the explanation earlier in the book (may just have been me). Overall the book was a good read and I did enjoy the story.

If you’re looking for a cute romance book between 2 people from opposite worlds, this might be the book for you. I will say that it’s a super easy and fast read. My only true critique is the “interview” or “article” parts of the book. I get they are there for reference in what is going on but they could have been written differently to follow the story. Now because I was given a copy to read, the final copy might be different. But either way, I still give it a good solid 4 stars. I really enjoyed Valentines strong will and that she knows what she wants to do but needs help with how to do it. Then comes our main man, Zack. He pushes her buttons and she pushes his buttons. Lots of things are predictable but in a good way. I do like that when it comes to “adult” time, they both keep asking for permission while navigating what their relationship is or is not. And realizing that sometimes celebrities just want to be real people or have to be what society feels they should be was a great perspective to put in the book. And to end on following your dreams and if they work, fantastic but if you fail, get back up and take each step trying to keep moving forward. In final thoughts, it is a cute romance story with a happy ending and going through struggles we might face in life and leading that taking a leap of faith can be scary but it might end up just with what you need.

this book just didn't vibe with me. I think the overall premise of the book was interesting, but everything just felt like it happened too fast.

I was not a big fan of either of the main characters. Jack was kind of a pushover and just did not seem to be able to think for himself. He was also both arrogant and insecure at the same time, which is not a good combo. And Valentine was kind of a conflicting character, she make a stance about something, then change her mind completely a few pages later.

Their relationship also gave me so much whiplash. One second they hate each other, and then they're making out two paragraphs later. They were also both so insecure in the relationship and their connection that I really was not rooting for them to be together.

There were also way too many time jumps. I could not keep up with the timeline of events and how long it had been between chapters or even breaks in the chapter.

Overall, there were some enjoyable parts of the book, but the negatives unfortunately outweigh the positives.

Leave No Trace is Valentine and Zack’s story. Valentine lives in Telluride and works as a waitress at one of the ski resorts in town and also creates videos to educate people about the outdoors and the mountains.

Zack is an actor who goes viral in one of Valentine’s videos. Together with his PR team they try to resolve the situation while he is getting ready to premiere a new film at the festival in Telluride. Zack gets to solve his PR problem and Valentine is getting paid and can earn enough money to fix her car.
Over the course of the story their feelings build, particularly after being snowed in at a resort.

I think it took a few chapters for me to connect to the story. I liked how the book was written in 3 acts. The pace of the first act was a little slow, but the second and third acts the pace improves to build Zack and Valentine’s story.

Readers who enjoy opposites attract, forced proximity, and small town stories will enjoy this book.

There are open door scenes.

This one started with me deeply disliking both MCs-Valentine was a Telluride local so obsessed with leaving no trace in nature she judges anyone who is ignorant of the practice or “does it wrong” rather than educating them. Zack is a huge movie star so caught up in his brand and the anxiety of letting those telling him what to do and the general public down he is all false bravado and fake smiles while hiding himself away both literally and figuratively. They end up at odds online and are just both so awful individually and to each other I truly thought the only two characters I would like were Valentine’s dad Rick and Zack’s body man (aka assistant) Theo. Surprisingly through Zack & Valentine’s forced interactions they grew into real and flawed characters who were so sweet and tender together. They both go through lovely growth arcs and one together as well. It ended so sweet and though the beginning felt like a forced read by the middle I was speeding through and very much enjoyed it. It very much grew on me and ended perfectly for the characters.

3.75 rounded up to 4

I was thrilled to receive this as an ARC and felt truly honored to get the chance to read for this author!

As a Colorado native, this story immediately had a special place in my heart. Wilder captured the essence of Telluride beautifully—it made me long for that crisp mountain air all over again!

Zack Ryder might just be one of my favorite male romance leads in a long time. (Romance isn’t usually my go-to genre, so when I do pick one up, it has to deliver—and this one absolutely did.) The spice level was just right—not overdone, which I appreciated—and the character development felt completely authentic.

Valentine was such a refreshing FMC. She stayed true to herself and didn’t change her lifestyle for a man. I loved that she continued to chase her dream of being an artist while navigating the relationship on the side—it wasn’t her entire identity. I wish we saw more leading women like her in romance!

Huge kudos to Alicia Wilder for a fun, fast-paced read. I’m definitely looking forward to exploring more of her work!

Leave No Trace is a small town romance where a popular movie star with social anxiety and a mountain girl cross paths. What started off as a contracted transaction turned into something so much deeper. At first, Zach comes across as a spoiled rich, famous guy that has someone that does everything for him. Valentine is a strong character. She's independent, lives out of her car but has her parents near by for support, lives for the mountains and hikes. I loved the strong nature of her character. But I really enjoyed when her and Zach started to connect and help him with his anxiety. She brought him out of his shell a lot. I also felt like there was such a deeper meaning in this story as well. They both seemed to be searching for a sense of purpose and felt like they had none, like they weren't seen.
While the story is intriguing, I felt it to be a little too drawn out. There were several moments in the story where nothing much was really happening and I found it hard to keep my attention. I do look forward to reading more from this author though.

If you are a wilderness person, you will love this book. It centers around a woman, Valentine, who loves being in nature so much so that she chooses to live out of her car so she can camp out most nights underneath the stars. She cares about the environment and taking care of it so when she sees a hot shot celebrity feeding a squirrel human food in a video he posted on social media, she goes off. She retaliates by posting her own video calling him out about feeding animals. Zack unbeknownst that what he did was bad, is forced to work with Valentine and make a series of educational videos about the wilderness and wildlife in order to repair his reputation. I found the story to be okay, it didn't have my hooked but it was interesting to learn a little more about the wilderness. I enjoyed seeing the two characters get to know one another and see that spark develop between these two enemies.

We're back in Telluride to meet Hollywood mega star Zack who is an introvert in a world where his job is to be famous, he's used to having an army following him around and doing very little for himself. Whilst staying in Telluride to launch his own directorial debut, he meets Mountain Girl Valentine. Valentine hates everything that Zack stands for, entitled and arrogant, they could not be more opposites, and they are off on a wrong footing before they've even met! The more time they spend together creating content to help with Zacks image, the more walls around Valentine break down. There is a HEA, but its a journey and there are broken hearts to be had.

Solid 3 ⭐️ 1🌶️ Level

This is my first time reading a book by this author. I have to say this book was somewhat educational for me and it did have me googling some things that it stated. It did spark my curiosity reading camping, hiking and the homeless community living in cars and still working at resorts.

This is a book that I was looking forward to reading, but I had a hard time staying in the story. However, you have an FMC that is passionate about camping and MMC that is trying to grow as an artist. I absolutely loved the FMCs fathers.

This book had great moments and like I said in general sparked my curiosity on some things, which I appreciate. I will say that despite it being an average read for me, I truly enjoyed the 25% of the book. It comes together nicely.

A Leap of Faith and a Whole Lot of Sass

OK Besties, if you’re craving a cute, feel-good romance with just the right amount of sass and spice, "Leave No Trace" by Alicia Wilder needs to be added to your TBR! Valentine is strong-willed and determined, but she’s not afraid to admit she needs a little help figuring out her next steps. Enter Zack—equal parts frustrating and swoony—who pushes her buttons while she pushes right back. Yes, some things are predictable, but in that delicious romcom way we secretly love. There was some spice and it was endearing to see the spicy scenes focused on consent and respect while still bringing the heat. Plus, the peek into the struggles of fame versus authenticity hit perfectly. It’s a sweet, fast read that reminds you that its OK to take risks and sometimes trust that leap of faith. This was a good solid read.

Leave no Trace by Alicia Wilder is the story of Valentine and Zack. Zack is a big movie star in Valentine‘s hometown for a film festival and Valentine is a local, who wishes that outsiders showed the same love and respect for the area as locals.

I enjoyed reading this book, but it didn’t grab me as much as I was expecting. The characters were likeable and well written, and the storyline was engaging, but it was missing “something” for me and I have not been able to put my finger on it.

It’s a great book for a day at the beach or an afternoon by the pool in the sunshine, but unfortunately, it is also one that I will easily forget now that I have finished the last chapter.

I really enjoyed Zack and Valentine’s story. They seem to be total opposites. She’s the fiercely independent mountain girl environmentalist and he’s the Hollywood star who does nothing for himself. They both have anxiety and feel less than. As they work together they discover they have a lot in common. Can they bridge the divide between their different cultures and make it work. This was an easy read. One of those books you get lost in and don’t realize how long you’ve been reading. I was given an ARC of this book and am leaving my honest review.

It was a page turner and the suspense was intense. The passion between them was captivating of and love and enemies romance with Valentine and Zack relationship was complicated but the attraction between was entirely personal. I was on the edge of my seat and I couldn’t even put it down literally. So much temptation and emotion was overwhelming and drama of love .
I definitely recommend this book and you won’t be disappointed. I received advance copy of this book Happily PR via Bookfunnel and am voluntarily leaving my honest opinion. Trina Jones

Valentine and Zack's story is one of hate/dislike to love. This includes banter and quite a few fights in the beginning. I found the story fast-paced, and enjoyed the anxiety rep.
The two main characters' lives are so different, but they are also so much alike in other ways. They have heart-to-heart discussions, and push each other to reach their dreams.
This story was full of hope and dreams. It also included personal growth from the characters, which I enjoyed.
This is an ARC review, all thoughts are my own.

This was a cute enemies to lovers romance where a nature loving, guide (angry at the world and not entirely sure why) falls for a hot shot movie star. I mean, what could go wrong? 🤣
They are both flawed with history, and I must admit I loved getting to know Zacks history, I wouldn't have associated anxiety with a successful movie star. These characters were so opposite that I did wonder whether they would ever be able to make this work. They are both passionate about things, and it was great to see their passion for each other
