Field & Greystone #5

The Cursed Divination

Rate this book
When a self-proclaimed medium contacts Amelia Greystone with chilling knowledge of a corpse’s location, she turns to the one man she can trust—Scotland Yard Inspector Henry Field...

Henry has no patience for mystics or séances. He believes in evidence, not whispers involving a dark prophecy. But when the medium’s cryptic letter leads to the discovery of a young woman murdered in an abandoned tunnel, even he must question whether there’s more to divination than he thought.

Amelia, haunted by tragedies of her own, is wary of the woman who claims to commune with spirits. Yet the medium’s dire prediction fills her with unease...and when the body is found exactly where the woman foretold, Amelia fears something—or someone—is reaching out from beyond.

Drawn together by a case steeped in death and deception, Amelia and Henry must navigate fog-choked streets, forgotten tunnels, and the lure of a darkly compelling medium whose intentions may not be as selfless as they seem...before another victim is claimed.

Venture to the dark streets of Victorian London with the fifth novel in The Field & Greystone series perfect for historical mystery readers of Irina Shapiro, Charles Finch, and Miss Scarlet and the Duke.

When Mrs Nettle, a self-proclaimed medium contacts Amelia Greystone with chilling knowledge of a corpse’s location, she turns to the one man she can trust—Scotland Yard Inspector Henry Field.
Henry has no patience for mystics or séances. He believes in evidence, not whispers involving a dark prophecy. But when the medium’s cryptic letter leads to the discovery of a young woman murdered in an abandoned tunnel, even he must question whether there’s more to divination than he thought. Then Mrs Nettle leads the police to another body.
The fifth outing for Henry & Amelia & another unputdownable murder mystery. I love both Henry & Amelia & have loved not only their slow burn romance but also how well they work together & how they support each other. I also loved Henry’s relationship with his father, who was so proud of his son. A well written often chilling book, which gets very personal for Henry, I love how he was still objective. There were twists, turns & surprises before the thrilling & terrifying climax. An engrossing, captivating book & I look forward to many more & I highly recommend it & the whole series

The next in a great series. Once again Amelia Greystone and Inspector Henry Field join forces to solve an unthinkable crime. A visit to a “diviner” leads to a body being found. Henry has doubts as Mrs Nettle, the diviner, draws Amelia in with references to her dead daughter and husband. When a family friend’s daughter goes missing and Mrs Nettle claims the location of a body the crimes are brought close to home. Henry feels the pressure particularly when Amelia finds a vital clue. She is summoned by Mrs Nettle who reveals a terrifying secret. Henry has suspicions about the diviner’s husband and while in pursuit comes across a scene that shakes him to the core. He finds himself in a fight to bring the killer to justice. Justice is gained and Henry realises that his relationship with Amelia is worth everything to him. There is also a little teaser to the next book. A most enjoyable and engaging read which I highly recommend.

Amelia Greystone and Scotland Yard Inspector Henry Field continue to work together to solve a murder. This time Mrs. Nettle, known as a medium, reveals where to find the body. Amelia and Henry are somewhat skeptical, but the location is real. Though they have many leads and clues, it's a frustrating case, until it becomes personal. Amelia and Henry's relationship is changing, and there is hope for a future together, not only on a personal level, but as partners in solving crime. Another great read in the series set in Victorian England.

Widow Amelia Greystone and Scotland Yard Inspector Henry Field once again team up when Mary Nettle, a physic medium, gives Amelia information about a murder victim. Mary first contacted Amelia in the previous book through her editor at the magazine she works for, but Amelia had no desire to meet with her and polite declined her invitation. She thought the matter was over, but Mrs. Nettle has once again reached out and this time contacted Amelia at her home. Intrigued, Amelia visits the woman and is surprised when the woman insists that she has been told by “the spirits” that there is a body hidden in an abandoned tunnel at King’s Cross railway station, she isn’t sure if the body is a man or a woman and also makes mention of jewelry the person had in their possession. She immediately contacts Henry to investigate, and they are both shocked to learn that Mrs. Nettle’s information was correct.

Henry doesn’t know what to believe, he has a hard time accepting that Mrs. Nettle may indeed communicate with the death, but since her alibi checks out, as does her husband and the rest of their household staff, he is at a loss to explain how she came by the information. He is further baffled when they learn the man they found in the tunnel is actually a woman and that she was a thief. He follows leads, but isn’t making progress, until Mrs. Nettle summons Amelia again and this time the information she tells Amelia hits a lot closer to home for him.

This installment of the series was quite a page turner! The story sees Amelia and Henry growing closer and adds a slight supernatural twist. As always, the writing is great, the mystery is well done, and the ending is a nailbiter. I enjoyed seeing Amelia and Henry’s relationship deepen and their bond growing stronger as they work together as partners, it adds a layer of emotion to the story. Overall, this was a very good story, but I did figure out the murderer rather easily, it didn’t diminish my enjoyment, and the author did throw in a red herring as well as a twist or two that did make me doubt myself. This is the fifth book in the series and while it could be read as a standalone title, I would recommend reading the series in order for the best reader experience.

Absolutely loving this series!

Ms Williams has added a touch of the paranormal to this story, and I'm not complaining :) The mystery centers on a medium who initially contacts Amelia, claiming to have some information for her about a missing person. Henry of course accompanies her, and what the medium tells them leads the police to a dead body...and naturally Amelia and Henry are invested from that point on (him professionally and her both to support him and wanting to help find the murderer).

The mysteries continue to pile up as their investigation continues--Amelia continues to get messages from Mrs. Nettle (the medium), attends a séance (reluctantly), and may or may not have had her own spiritual encounter while there, which leaves her disconcerted. A second body is discovered in the same spot as the first, also pointed to by the medium; this one is connected to friends of Henry's parents. There is a frustrating lack of evidence that would lead to the killer, especially since neither body would probably have been discovered as quickly if not for Mrs. Nettle's "abilities."

Is the medium genuine? Is she somehow connected to the deaths? Did Amelia really experience something otherworldly, or was it just the power of suggestion? The reader, along with the main characters, is kept guessing, and in the end it's a darn good thing that the killer ends up confessing, because most of the best evidence they have came from a medium in a trance. (So she's real? Maybe? The guessing continues, even afterward) Though Amelia and her microscope (and her very observant maid Yvette) also helped--and Amelia has a book on forensic science processes on order, so I look forward to seeing her give Henry more help in that area in the future.

Henry and Amelia's relationship continued to progress here, and I swear I was just as excited as they seemed to be about the future couple outings they're starting to plan with Henry's friends/coworkers and their spouses. <3

As always, this book *could* be read as a standalone, but I really recommend reading them in order if for no other reason than to truly appreciate the eventual payoff that the development of their slow burn romance brings in each book.

Series: Field and Greystone #5
Publication Date: 11/25/25
Period: Victorian London
Number of Pages: 321

Murder and mayhem hit a bit too close to home in this fifth addition to the excellently written Field and Greystone series. Inspector Henry Field wonders whether he should hand the investigation over to another detective. Yet, he can’t bring himself to step aside when the victim is a family friend and justice feels personal.

Neither Henry nor Mrs. Amelia Greystone is certain what to believe about mediums, spirit communication, or any form of after-death messages. So when a medium contacts Amelia claiming to know the location of a body, Amelia feels compelled to reach out to Henry. Is this woman chasing publicity and hoping Amelia will write about her—or is she truly gifted? When the body appears exactly where the medium predicted, they’re forced to consider a darker possibility: is she communing with the dead, or is she involved in murder?

While the investigation stalls, Henry is summoned by the Tisdales, long-time friends whose daughter has gone missing. He agrees to take the case, only to find himself with yet another mystery that leads nowhere. Then Mrs. Nettle, the medium, resurfaces. The spirits, she claims, have revealed the location of another body—again in the same place as before. Her eerie revelations ignite two grisly murder inquiries and raise one pressing question: is she genuine, or a dangerous fraud?

Henry and Amelia find themselves stumped for much of the book. No clues, no connections between victims—only the medium linking the crimes. Both Henry and Amelia have suspicions about the culprit, but without evidence, their instincts aren’t enough.

This is an excellently written mystery with strong pacing, relatable characters, and an engaging investigation. I especially loved watching the relationship between Henry and Amelia deepen, as well as the developing camaraderie between Henry, the medical examiner, and Sergeant Fletcher.

Suspense, twists, red herrings, and atmospheric tension make this a gripping read. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. Happy reading!

I voluntarily read an early copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

THE HORROR! Amelia loses 3 years of her life! She goes from being 29 in the first book to 26 in this one! (I do hope the author just fucked up and not suddenly decided 29 is too old).

Apart from this, Book 5 is a step up from the three previous installments in the series, despite having the same drawbacks. The author still leaves the resolution to the very last chapter (like in all the books), the murderer is very obvious, and the inevitable confrontation is somewhat anticlimactic. However, the case has personal stakes for Henry and that's what makes it interesting. We see Henry emotional, see more of his relations with his father, see his personal life improving by developing his friendship with Fletcher and Taylor, and see him finally trust his hunches (though he's still whining about his adoption).

The best part is Henry's relations with Amelia, which finally progress after his official declaration of courtship, now even too fast (kisses before the declaration of love!). They are still very sweet and warm with each other, with some funny interactions. It is somewhat spoiled in the end when we learn in the epilogue that Henry still didn't find the courage to declare his love to Amelia.

I am also somewhat anxious about the next book (sequel hook is in the middle of the plot, as in Book 4) because of the blurb - it sounds like there will be angst for the sake of angst, but fingers crossed that I'm wrong and the relationship won't take a step back.

A fun, and somewhat spooky addition to the series! Amelia can't help but be intrigued by the hope of a message from the beyond, something to assure her that her late husband and daughter are well and happy on the other side of the veil. But the medium who wants so badly to speak with her has an additional, unexpected message, one that sends Amelia and Henry in pursuit of a murderer.

The random nature of the crimes is boggling, but add in Henry's personal connection to one of the victims and now we are not just solving a mystery but also diving deeper into Henry's character, learning more about him as well as Amelia.

While its true I had my suspicions of 'who-dun-it'...don't we all?? The solution was not quite what I thought it was. I've read many mystery series and some individual stories are easier to crack than others. Plus, I'm here for more than the mystery, I also want to see how the characters and their relationships develop from book to book. And not just Amelia and Henry. Williams does a particularly nice job in this story with the secondary characters as well, and their relationships with the primary ones.

If you love this series you'll enjoy this story, and like me, you'll find yourself looking forward to the next one with a lot of curiosity to see what happens next!

I absolutely loved this book! From the moment Amelia Greystone was contacted by a mysterious medium with chilling knowledge of a hidden corpse, I was hooked. I couldn’t put it down — every chapter pulled me deeper into the foggy streets of Victorian London and the eerie tunnels beneath King’s Cross.

What made the story so compelling for me was the balance between the gripping mystery and the emotional connection between Amelia and Inspector Henry Field. Their partnership is everything I want in a series like this: trust, respect, and a slow-burn romance that makes the stakes feel even higher. Watching them grow closer while facing danger together was just as thrilling as uncovering the truth behind the murders.

The supernatural element added an extra layer of intrigue. Like Henry, I was skeptical of Mrs. Nettle’s “visions,” but when her eerie predictions proved true, I found myself questioning right alongside him. The twists, red herrings, and nail-biting finale kept me guessing and made the ending incredibly satisfying.

This is the kind of book that reminds me why I love historical mysteries — atmospheric, suspenseful, and full of heart. I’m already eager for the next installment in the Field & Greystone series.

Five stars from me — highly recommended!

Though one in a series and featuring a slow burn relationship this book can be read as a standalone.
Both Amelia and Henry are suspicious when a medium contacts them and provides details which lead to finding a dead body. How could she know? Is she involved in the crime? Scotland Yard struggles with the Who? What? and Why? And then the medium advises of another murder, with the body found in the same place! Not only is this second victim a family friend but now there is the fear that the killer will strike for a third time. For the reader the villain is an easy guess but it is not so easy for the police.
Henry and Amelia are now courting, though they have yet to verbalise the depth of their feelings - perhaps in the next book? They work well together, both giving the other much needed support and Henry’s fortuitous arrival towards the end of the story saves Amelia’s life and clarifies his feelings for her.
A recommended read.

I SOOOOO love this series. Amelia and Henry are so adorable together, each feeling a closeness, yet unwilling to expose their hearts. It is a very slow burn love story, but what keeps them going are the weird series of murders they keep getting involved in. This one should have been a Halloween release, it was so creepy. A woman who can talk to the spirits keeps encouraging Amelia to come to a seance and Amelia is less than interested. It didn’t take me long to figure out what was going on, but the pain Henry and family had to deal with was heartbreaking. The author makes these characters very real, flaws and all, with a storyline that never gives you a chance to really breathe. I loved the plot twists and the climax was exciting. I could SEE in my mind what I was reading and that is a true test of a good author! No crass language (thank you author) and another case coming, I am sure! Great story, just don’t read it in the “dark and stormy night”…hehehe

I received this story for free and these are my own views.

4.5 STARS - ROUNDED UP.

Our MC's finally know how they feel about each other. I can't wait for them to declare themselves as far as love goes. Talk about a slow burn - lol.

Two murders to solve and some twists in who the first person was killed. I had 2-3 suspects and loved trying to figure out if I was right. Great main and secondary characters too. This can be a standalone, but you'd miss how the MC come to rely on each other. Their relationship grows with each book.

I believe the Lord's name used in vain once. This is a clean story with maybe a kiss or two. No cheating, no cliffhanger, HEA, and slow burn for romance. They do make a believable couple. The middle at times dragged for me. The ending was suspenseful and engaging.

I can't improve on the blurb, just giving you extra tidbits to decide whether to purchase. I received ARC and all opinions are my own and freely given. (ljb)

We have another page turner with Amelia Greystone and Inspector Henry Fields. We see a little more action in their budding romance!
Amelia received a message from Mary Nettle who claimed she had information about a body of a missing woman!
This set her and Henry on the trail of a ruthless killer! One who did not hesitate to kill again! When the second murder with the same location but a different method of fatal injury struck too close to home! Henry is grief stricken but tries to remain objective! It has the involvement of his retired father as well!
But the pieces of the puzzle remain elusive except one tiny literal shred of evidence!
When Amelia is summoned again to a “private” seance Mrs Nettles gift becomes terrifyingly accurate! Can Henry save Amelia again from
A dangerous psychopath and others who are also in his path? Bravo well done!
I received an ARC copy for my unbiased opinion!

In this installment we get a bit more quality time with Henry and Amelia. Which is very enjoyable, as they value and respect each other. Also, Amelia seems to be getting an occupation that is both suitable for her talents and interests as well as helpful in the context of Henry’s work. The teaser for the next book doesn’t mention anything in this direction, though, but one can hope to see her more productively involved in the later installments.
Similarly, the relationship between Henry and his father is expanded a bit, which provides some depth for the characters. The aspects of Henry’s social life (or the lack thereof) as well as the glimpses into Amelia’s household dynamics made this installment very enjoyable for me and definitely added the “cozy” in the cozy mystery.
Looking forward to the next book in the series with all the further developments.

The cursed divination 5*
I just love the characters of Amelia and Henry and the way their relationship is developing. I also like the way that Henry appreciates the way Amelia is able to help in his investigations and the value he puts on her opinions. There is, of course, the murder mystery to solve and there seemed to be no clues, at first, as to who the culprit could be. There is a spiritual element to this story and Amelia and Henry, being scientifically minded are unsure whether to believe it or not. This was a very engaging read and there is a little snippet leading to the next story! I can’t wait! I received a copy and have voluntarily reviewed it. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

In their fifth adventure, Amelia Greystone and Inspector Henry Field find themselves entangled in a chilling case sparked by Mrs. Nettle’s eerie divination. The mystery cuts close to home for both Henry and Amelia - but Henry's steady resolve, along with Amelia's unwavering support, make them an irresistible team. Amidst corpses, clues, and creeping danger, the slow-burn romance finally sparks a couple of tender kisses that promise more to come. Twists abound, the climax thrills, and the blend of suspense and heart makes this installment impossible to put down. Fascinating mystery
Amelia Greystone has lost her young daughter 4 years prior and her husband 2 years later. So, she is not enthusiastic about spiritism and the spirit world. When she gets involved with the investigation concerning two murders brought to her attention by a medium, she mistrusts the latter’s ethic and motivations.
We follow in the footsteps of DI Henry Field, his feelings of powerlessness to prevent the second murder, the slow progress made almost despite the unwillingness to help shown by some people. I also loved to read about the very beginnings of forensic research.
I love this whole series.

I have read all the previous books in this series. I enjoyed all of them. However, due to the title, I was hesitant to read this one. All the books start the same, with a POV of the victim. My heart often breaks for them. They’re not always perfect but what happens to them is tragic.

But I am digressing. I read enough to see how the supernatural element would play out. It did not allow me to complete the book. What I did read was well written. I look forward to reading the next book in the series.

Look…I’m 71% of the way in and so far there hasn’t really been a single clue to solving the first murder. Just another murder. I may come back and revise, but I’m feeling pretty frustrated. If the ❤️story was picking up in lieu of a more lively plot structure I could even get behind that. But so far, there has only been a few lingering gazes and some shy hand holding. Overall there is as much redundancy and recapping as there has been rising action

I adore Henry and Amelia. Amelia is summoned by a medium who wants her to write an article about her. She takes along Henry who is an Inspector and very trustworthy. When the medium points them to a dead body, the investigation begins. It's great how Amelia and Henry respect each other and admit to caring about each other. I like how this romance is progressing

Another great addition to The Field & Greystone Series! The beginnings of the books in this series are so realistic! I was drawn into the mystery right away. The eerie addition of the medium brought a exciting twist to the story. I love Henry and Amelia & the progression of their relationship across the series.
