Kodomo Doki Doki: Book One: Touch Reminiscence

Rate this book
How do you fix yourself when you don't understand why what's broken about you is broken? How do you start when you know that the fixing of yourself could cause the ones you care about to fall apart?

After they became Florals (persons with flowers growing from the skin), a group of friends ages eight through seventeen are sent away from their familiar orphanage to a decrepit Island, where they are expected to live as if the entirety of it is an ordinary home of wall and ceiling.

The Island isn't the only decrepit thing though, as the group's friendship is crumbling in the wake of a breaking promise, meant to hold back their darkest fears, and a secret, kept desperately between two. But before they can even begin to focus on the fixing of their friendship, strange things occur on the Island, and they are witness to things they aren't sure they should believe in, until they must ask themselves if they can fix their breaking promise-because without it, their floral hearts are at risk of breaking next.

I was sent a free copy of this book last year to read and review (I got busy with school and didn't finish it in time) but here's my honest review on it! First I love the cover art, it's so adorable, precious and really caught my eye! Secondly the main characters (such as Frithie and the sisters) are adorable as well and I love seeing their character development occurs throughout the story. While I do love the concept of Florals, it was a bit difficult to follow along the plot because of the flowery writing pose. It was confusing for me and I didn't know what was happening in the book at first. However, after taking the time to read it carefully, I can understand the situation happening. Although it was still difficult for me to follow through, the writing is still beautiful. I love the Kawaii fashion representation, especially Fairy Kei! Because there was a lot of main characters, it was hard to tell who is speaking. I do love the autism and diabetes representation in the book and I enjoyed the characters' journeys alongside their disabilities throughout the story! Keep writing, Renaya <3.

I wish I could have but I just couldn't follow along with the writing style. The parts I could understand were interesting but it was written in what seemed like broken English to the point where I couldn't tell if it was intentional or not. Trying to read the first chapter actually made me look at some reviews and almost put an email to Netgalley about not being able to read it but I powered through and enjoyed it somewhat. I could not keep track of the characters whatsoever so that was a bummer and I could barely keep track of the plot but hey, that might have just been me. I wouldn't recommend it, especially not to the targeted audience (YA) but it wasn't awful.

Thank you to Netgalley and Victory Editing for this eARC.
