"Stitching Stardom – The Designer Who Dressed Bollywood’s Villains, Stars, and Politicians" by Madhav Agasti is an engaging memoir of a men’s dress designer who, even though he didn’t come from a designer family and had no formal tailoring or designing training, became one of the most sought-out and famous dress designers. In his five decades of crafting journey, he designed clothes for some of the most powerful and well-known figures in Indian politics and cinema. In this book, we get a glimpse of his journey of resilience and perseverance.

While reading the book, not once will you feel the writing is rigid or boastful; instead, you will feel like you are having a warm, friendly conversation about the behind-the-scenes world of tailoring. I loved how the author casually shares stories of his experiences working on big films and with big names. The author also shares the stress of deadlines, long hours, and the pressure of getting the look perfect. His love for the craft will also inspire you.

Another part that many would love about the book is that the author does not delve deeply into all the technicalities of fashion; instead, he makes the stories more gossip-worthy and focuses on his personal relationships with people and his growth.

Overall, the book is a relaxed, feel-good, and inspiring read. The author’s recollection of his days and experiences is going to give aspiring readers a good boost to elevate their own journey, so I definitely recommend this book.

Everyone must have heard the famous dialogue "Mogambo Khush Hua" . Late Amrish Puri ji immortalized that villainous character in Anil Kapoor and Late Sridevi ji starrer Mr.India which was a blockbuster of its time. But what stood out the most wasn't only his acting but his trademark red and black costume. Ever wondered who designed it ? The Author of this Memoir.

This book isn't just a typical autobiography where one goes through a lot of technicalities in the opted trade but focus more on the resilience aspect and what it takes to keep following your passion against all odds. How Madhav ji had a humble beginning and despite harbouring thoughts about a career which might not sustain in the longer run he kept on working for it. Fast forward 50 years, today he is one of the if not the most popular men's dress designer especially in the bollywood sphere and one can see the hints of his work in almost every movie

My biggest takeaway from this work is how it doesn't focus on the glamour quotient alone but goes deep into the craftsmanship and what goes behind the scene. The audience only look at the glazing outfit but how many sleepless nights have gone behind creating that fabric is difficult to imagine.

Anyone who is looking for a wake up call to not get deter and keep following his passion should read this book

🙋🏻‍♀️My take:
A memoir by a simple man, a tailor, a person who started as a one man army & stitched his way to success.
Why would a reader want to read about him, someone we may have never heard of?
But his work is something, all of us have seen & appreciated & applauded.

Popular actors & famous politicians have worn his creations & they have become a trademark, their own unique style.

Still, why should I read about his journey? What's in there for me, as a reader?

First of all, a publishing brand like Penguin has published this book. Think about it. It's a big deal to get a publisher to publish one's book & that too a big publisher like Penguin.

The book is perfectly crafted, cover to cover with amazing editing, be it the font style, the colour scheme, the formatting & placement of the stories, everything is well looked after. An author, especially one who is not a seasoned one, cannot do it on his own. So I genuinely want to applaud the entire team behind this book.

The story keeps on skipping timelines, moving back & forth, keeping the reader engaged with the storyline.

It is not a typical rag to riches stories but one, where you start from scratch all on your own & make it big. The author came from an educated family but chose a profession that was not accepted by his family, no matter how much he tried to convince them.

This story is one of recognising your inner voice, your calling & following it, giving it, your all, going against the wishes of your family, leaving your comfort behind & starting without a plan but on hope & faith on your talent & hardwork.

It was a very filmy, bollywood type story, the way the author left his home to follow his dreams.

His struggles, the way he tried to start, pick up momentum at so many places, conveys his unbreakable resolve to keep on trying.
All through this, he kept his eyes ears & senses open to gather information, opportunities, make relationships, learn varied skills & everything that he could.

Reading through those times is an eye opener.

He remembered his lessons, worked on his skills, mastered them & kept on building.

What he built & how he built it, there's so much to learn from it.

My take: master your basic skills, something you are known for but at the same time work on your interpersonal/ relationship skills.
Also one needs to have clarity about self, strengths weaknesses & what calls to you.
Believe in yourself, even if no-one else does.
Understanding the other person/ your client/ customer & making him feel like a king & giving personalized service is another takeway that makes one stand apart.
Humour. How you make someone feel is very important & if you can make someone laugh, then you have a jackpot. If you have joy & light in your eyes & soul & it draws people to you, then there would be no stopping you.

The last section, end note, having heartfelt thoughts from his wife & two sons was a totally raw, unedited part, I felt. It was honest & wrapped up so much in a few pages.

I read this book, pretty quick, end to end with a very keen eye although I took sometime to post my review about it.

I am in awe of the life the author lived & it somehow reminded me of the journey of superstar Dharmendra. He started small, with dreams in his eyes & made beautiful relations throughout his life.

This book would be well worth your time, pick it up to learn something about life.

Stitching Stardom is the story of a man, a designer who has steadily and quietly shaped five decades of Indian cinema, politics, and style. In this memoir of Madhav Agasti is a heartfelt and compelling narrative of the journey of success story. It is written with utmost honesty which is what stands out about this book immediately.

The journey begins with modest start in Mumbai, filled with curiosity, courage, and an unshakeable love for tailoring with no formal training, no shortcuts.

As the narrative moves forward, you see how perseverance and adaptability became his greatest skills. His journey from a small tailoring setup to designing for over 350 Bollywood films feels almost surreal, yet deeply grounded.

The anecdotes from the film industry are especially fascinating and knowing that Agasti was behind iconic looks like Mogambo from Mr. India adds a thrilling layer to the reading experience. The book also details about the craft, the long hours, creativity and the pressure of getting minutest things right which million of eyes will see on screen and then equally intriguing is his work with political figures such as Balasaheb Thackeray. This memoir shows how tailoring is mot only about fashion it’s about understanding people, power, and presence. Stitching Stardom is also deeply personal as Agasti talks about on failures, turning points, and the people who stood by him through his thick and thins which shows the wisdom evolved overtime.

This memoir is a tribute to craftsmanship, and to the unnoticed hands that shape history from behind the curtain. I have read many memoirs before from various fields but never one by a men’s designer that too from such a renowned person. This made it a new reading experience for me and I was excited to explore it through a detailed review.

Let us be honest we all have fantasized about the style and swag of one or more Bollywood stars in our lives. Getting a chance to read the story of the designer who created those iconic costumes adds a whole new level of excitement and that is exactly what this book gave me.

This book speaks about the journey of Madhav Agasti a men’s designer for Bollywood actors and Indian politicians over a span of five decades. He began his journey in Mumbai with no formal professional training in stitching yet went on to become one of the most influential designers in both Bollywood and Indian politics. He has designed costumes for over 350 films working with a wide range of actors.

The book also highlights the challenges he faced while creating costumes, the level of craftsmanship and dedication required while creating certain designs, etc. The importance of patience in the fashion world and staying true to one’s craft is strongly conveyed throughout the book.

The memoir focuses largely on his journey, though I personally expected more detailed experiences with the stars he worked with. The author particularly discusses his work in designing costumes for famous Bollywood villains such as Amrish Puri, Prem Chopra and Kader Khan, etc, he also mentioned that designing the costumes for the villains was his favourite as it needed to carry a certain style and statement while creating it.

The pictures presented in this book speak more than words. Each photograph carries a unique story and the evolution of the author’s career can be vividly felt through these visuals. More than just a memoir this book feels like listening to the author speak directly sharing his life and experiences in a warm conversational narrative.

Stitching Stardom: For Icons, On and Offscreen is a captivating journey into the world of bespoke tailoring, chronicling the life and legacy of Madhav Agasti, the man who quite literally shaped the public image of India’s elite. From Bollywood legends to political heavyweights, Agasti’s needle has touched the fabric of Indian history.

In around 150 pages, the author shares how he leaves home with very little money, learns from every city he works in, struggles in Mumbai, and slowly builds a name by designing costumes for more than 350 films and dressing famous personalities, including the iconic villain Mogambo from “Mr India”.

These real‑life stories make the book feel close to the heart and show how patience, hard work, and skill can slowly change a person’s life. The writing style is very simple and clear, so even readers who do not usually read memoirs will find it easy to follow. Agasti speaks in a warm, humble voice and never shows off, even when he describes working with big stars or national leaders. There is no gossip or negativity; instead, the focus stays on lessons learned, funny moments in the workshop, and the quiet pride of seeing his designs on screen and on stage. This tone makes the reader feel as if they are listening to an elder share memories over a relaxed conversation.

Overall, this book is a heartwarming read for anyone who enjoys Bollywood, fashion, or real stories of people who rise step by step through dedication. It shows that success is not only about talent but also about relationships, honesty, and staying grounded even after reaching the top. “Stitching Stardom” leaves the reader motivated and grateful for the unseen hands that shape the look of India’s most famous faces.

"Stitching Stardom" written by Madhav Agasti is a captivating memoir that traces the extraordinary journey of a men’s dress designer who rose from modest beginnings to become a legendary name in Bollywood🎥 and Indian politics. Originating from Nagpur, Agasti’s move to Mumbai marked the start of a remarkable career spanning over five decades—a time when men’s tailoring was not yet a distinguished craft in the country🇮🇳.

Despite a lack of formal training, Madhav Agasti’s passion for design and perseverance propelled him to the forefront of his profession. His portfolio boasts designs for over 350 films🎬, including the unforgettable villain Mogambo in 'Mr India' (1987), alongside attire for political stalwarts like Balasaheb Thackeray.

The remarkable journey of self-taught tailor Madhav Agasti, who went from sleeping on Mumbai's pavements to becoming one of India's most renowned men's costume designers, is chronicled in the inspirational and thoroughly grounded biography Stitching Stardom. The book, which spans more than 50 years, is about more than simply fashion—it's about tenacity, modesty, and unrelenting enthusiasm. Instead of being dramatic or arrogant, Agasti's narration is straightforward and honest, making his life tale feel personal and approachable.

Rich anecdotes are what set this memoir apart. The chapter that describes how Mogambo's famous appearance in *Mr. India* was created is my favorite part of the book. It was amazing to learn that Amrish Puri's renowned phrase "Mogambo khush hua" was an impromptu response to first seeing the garment. It exemplifies how clothes may develop into a personality unto itself. The behind-the-scenes looks at Indian politics are as captivating, particularly when it comes to creating Balasaheb Thackeray's distinctive outfit or measuring Prime Minister P.V. Narasimha Rao on a treadmill.

It goes beyond glamour, which is why I suggest this book. Stitching Stardom serves as a potent reminder that perseverance, skill, and self-confidence are all necessary for success. Fashion fans, movie buffs, and anyone motivated by true tales of self-made achievement should read it.

Stitching Stardom is a compelling memoir that offers a rare, behind-the-scenes look at the worlds of Bollywood and Indian politics through the lens of fashion. Authored by Stitching Stardom, the book chronicles the remarkable journey of Madhav Agasti—a self-taught designer who quietly shaped the visual identity of some of India’s most iconic on-screen villains, celebrated film stars, and influential political leaders.

What makes this book stand out is its perspective. Rather than focusing on glamour alone, Agasti highlights the discipline, craftsmanship, and intuition required to design clothing that communicates power, menace, charisma, or authority. His anecdotes—from designing unforgettable cinematic looks to tailoring for politicians who understood the symbolism of attire—are both engaging and insightful. The narrative captures how costume design is not just about fabric, but about storytelling, perception, and psychology.

The writing is straightforward and reflective, making the book accessible even to readers with no background in fashion or cinema. At its core, Stitching Stardom is a story of perseverance, creative confidence, and staying relevant across decades of cultural change. For readers interested in Bollywood history, personal branding, or unconventional career journeys, this book offers valuable lessons wrapped in understated elegance.

Madhav Agasti’s "Stitching Stardom" is a genuinely grounding read. While it is technically a memoir about a fashion designer, it feels more like a history lesson told from a tailoring shop. Agasti documents his rise from sleeping on Mumbai pavements to dressing the most powerful people in the country, and he does it without being overly dramatic.

The real value of this book lies in the specific anecdotes. The story behind Amrish Puri’s look in "Mr. India' is a highlight. Agasti writes about the challenge: "It was an ominous task, but I was enjoying the pressure to deliver." It is fascinating to learn that Puri’s legendary line, "Mogambo khush hua," was actually a spontaneous reaction to seeing Agasti’s costume for the first time.

Beyond the films, the book offers a rare look at Indian politics. Agasti shares personal moments, like designing Bal Thackeray’s signature saffron look or taking measurements for P.V. Narasimha Rao while the Prime Minister was on his treadmill.

Agasti keeps the language simple and honest. As he notes in the book, "Clothing is never just fabric—it’s a character in itself."

If you are interested in the unseen side of Bollywood and Indian politics, this is a solid, insightful pick that respects the reader's time.

Stitching Stardom is the autobiography of one of India’s most renowned menswear designers, Mr. Madhav Agasti. His story is not just about a person who designs clothes; it’s about a man who dared to dream and, through sheer persistence, built a legacy spanning five decades.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
The book takes us on an inspiring journey—from his early years of struggle to discovering his niche in tailoring, building a successful business empire, and keeping pace with emerging styles to stitch for the elite. Agasti has dressed everyone from Bollywood icons and legendary movie characters to politicians, Prime Ministers, and Presidents. As he beautifully puts it, he hasn't just stitched clothes; he has stitched relationships and larger-than-life memories.⁣⁣
⁣⁣
What makes this memoir truly unique are the guest contributions interspersed throughout. These first-hand accounts and interludes from stars like Gulshan Grover, Johnny Lever, and Paresh Rawal—written in their own words—offer a fascinating glimpse into their personal bonds with Mr. Agasti. What stood out most to me, however, was Agasti’s profound gratitude toward every person he met on his journey, regardless of their role.⁣⁣
Overall, a truly memorable read! 📖✨⁣⁣

It is a memoir by Madhav Agasti, the celebrated menswear designer, hailing from Nagpur in Vidarbha, who carved a remarkable work in the worlds of Bollywood, fashion, and Indian politics. This book explores his journey from an untrained tailor into a designer for legendary film characters and leaders. It is filled with stories of struggle and perseverance.

He designed the costumes for famous actors like Amrish Puri for his famous movie Mr. India, Paresh Rawal for Chachi 420 and many more. The book explores creativity in past times where designers design from scratch, depending on their roles, even if it meant making a simple coat. But today designing mostly means using ready made clothes.

Madhav ji left his home at a young age with minimal resources, he traversed through multiple cities in pursuit of his passion. Along the way, he patiently stitched together his legacy. I liked that he took both praise and criticism with an open mind. He takes all the suggestions seriously, one can only improve based on feedback. If you don't pay heed to people's comments about your work, you'll come across as arrogant.

The book is not just about fashion and tailoring, its about stories of struggle, success and passion that has kept him going in life. This book inspires the readers to follow your dreams, no matter what obstacles you face and always believe in yourself to achieve success, no matter where you start.

"Stitching Stardom" is a gripping autobiography. It provides a unique, behind-the-scenes glimpse into Bollywood and Indian politics via the prism of fashion. This book focuses more on resilience and what it takes to continue pursuing your passion in the face of adversity. Unlike other traditional autobiographies, it helps to know more about the reasons for the chosen job.

The film business anecdotes are particularly fascinating, and the knowledge that Agasti was responsible for classic looks like Mr India's Mogambo adds an exciting element to the reading experience.

His work with political personalities like Balasaheb Thackeray is equally fascinating. The book also describes the craft, the long hours, the ingenuity, and the strain of getting the smallest details correct that millions of eyes will see on screen. The memoir offers a deeper, more intimate look into his journey by including observations and thoughts from those close to him in addition to his own tale.

Overall, "Stitching Stardom" serves as a motivational reminder that, with commitment and confidence, no dream is too large.

Madhav Agasti writes from his own experience as an image consultant who has worked closely with well known personalities. It feels like a real person sharing real lessons from real life. One of the most appreciated parts of the book is the behind the scenes stories. These stories help us see the difference between a person’s on screen image & their off screen reality. The author explains everything in a very calm & understandable way. It reminds us that every person has an image whether they are famous or not. How we present ourselves every day matters. I loved how the book subtly captures the changing nature of fashion and cinema in India without ever turning academic. The shifts in tastes, power dynamics, and work culture are visible between the lines.

The memoir shines most when it talks about human relationships trust between tailor and client, respect earned over time, and the silent discipline behind success. These moments stay with you long after finishing the book.
