I was a little less enamored of this set of old Sonic stories as the gags are getting old. But hey, that's what happens when you are an adult reading a book for the super young crowd! There aren't any particularly memorable villains in this set or scenarios. There's an unfortunate Christmas Carol retelling and a terrible game tie-in. Alas, volume 2 is pretty meh.

We're still in goofy territory here, though things are starting to become more coherent. Still going to be a bit before we get to the good stuff.

Are gags still horribly campy? Yes. Is there still 90s misogynistic writing? Every issue. But Sonic is still endearing, and we got to see Snively for the first time. Plus we got a fun little Christmas Carol story, which was cute. Archie Sonic has so much personality and goofy fun that it's easier to overlook the bad writing, especially when you have the foreknowledge that it gets better.

A fun read if you're looking for nostalgia. Mostly bad puns and nonsense, but if you loved these as a kid you can add a star or two easy. Looking forward to when these comics decided they wanted to tell actual stories.

I like the part when she said "Your lunch is getting cold" and then she says "Then why did you eat the fruit wax?"

Volume 2 of the Sonic the Hedgehog Archives is a bit more "meh" than the one before it and the one after it. This volume collects issues #5-8 of the Archie Sonic run, and so we have a video game tie-in comic (of Sonic Spinball, which wasn't that great of a Sonic game), a Christmas Carol parody, a story where Sonic competes in a parody of the Olympics, and Sonic fighting a robot Urkel.

And the puns. Oh, the glorious puns and speed jokes.

I definitely think Volume 1 and Volume 3 are both better collections and this one can probably be skipped, but there is still some fun art in this collection and it's fun reading Sonic's comic in its early days when it's still aimed at younger children and before they started fully depicting the gruesome aftermath of war at the hands of Robotnik and we get named characters dying.

Just take my word for it when I say that this volume is largely fluff and nothing more, nothing less. I think the only notable thing that happens here lore-wise is that they introduce Snively (via Christmas Carol parody) and Uncle Chuck (via mention only, but at least we know he exists at this stage).

--------------
Highlights

*Snively's first introduction to the Archie Comics universe is him appearing as a ghost in a Christmas Carol parody, meaning that the Christmas Carol parody in this volume is a lore-important story.

*Uncle Chuck is introduced because he left behind a treasure map where he buried a chest that contained Sonic's bronzed baby shoes. I really hope this is still canon to the Archie lore.

*Again, I must reiterate that the first time this comic series covers a video game, it's not any of the main titles. It's Sonic Spinball. You know, that game where most players didn't even get past Toxic Caves.

*Rotor orders an ant farm from Robotnik. To do so, he hands Robotnik the main address of Sonic and the Freedom Fighters' secret hideout. It's a good thing this happened prior to the comics' tonal change into something way more serious or else the Freedom Fighters would be dead and it'd be all Rotor's fault.

*The only reason they even compete in the parody Olympics in a story is because Sonic is an egotistical brat that sees a competition and is like "Well I'm SONIC and I CAN'T LOSE, I don't care if it's a trap".

*I love the beginning of these stories where a character has to yell Sonic's name in the giant logo before continuing with the rest of their sentence.

*The artwork is nice, I'll give them that. It's very cartoony.

*Sally and Antoine are both kinda unlikeable in this stage of the comics. Sally improves after about ten or so issues once they stop writing her as "the bossy girl" and more of the actual leader of the Freedom Fighters, but with Antoine it takes a while in the Archie run for him to get fleshed out.

Alllll of the nostalgia. This is so cheesy and childish but it's such a wonderful fast read. I used to get the individual comics when they sold them at Cub Foods before the store got closed down. That was the highlight of my week when my family went grocery shopping. I grew up on Sonic comics, the movie and the video games. I will never get sick of these.

Oh, Sonic comics...I still collect them at the age of 22. These are early ones, not as good as the later issues, but they are still Sonic comics.
