Skyler grew up in Southern California, under the best weather that state has to offer. So, he's shown a little of his insanity over the years in moving to colder, wetter places: New York City; Provo, Utah; Bainbridge Island, WA. He now resides with his family in Texas, which (apart from the humidity) gives him that great weather once again.
Skyler has been and continues to be a leader and executive with multiple Fortune 500 and Fortune 1000 companies, working across a variety of functions, both technical and non-technical. In other words, he's very much a jack-of-all-trades but master of none. Maybe that's why he has now decided to be an author as well. In it, he’s finally found the thing he loves to do most.
Mr. Ramirez currently resides in Texas with his wife, Lindsey, and their four children.
This kindle ebook novel is from my Kindle Unlimited account book two of three
They are traveling to the planet 🌐 where she will assassinate the target. They have some detours but eventually reach the target. It all changes in the moment.
I would highly recommend this series and author to readers of action, misdirection, and violence space opera novels 🎶🤓 2025 😕😏
This was the second instalment of the A Star Nation in Peril series. It follows the adventures of spy/assassin Heather Kilgore as she fulfils the missions of her nations most elite organisation. It is action sci-fi with a bit of mystery and intrigue.
This second instalment of the series saw Heather tasked with a very high profile assassination in the heart of her Empire’s rival power. Which would have been easier for her without some analyst showing up as her partner and making her life more difficult!
This one was split POV as we also followed the story of a rival agent on the other side of the conflict. Sparrow was a complicated character as she juggled her job with hiding her multiple personalities from her employers!
It was a fun enough tale. Heather can be a bit of a ruthless assassin at times but she just about manages to stay likeable enough and did seem to question the worst of the orders she received. Sparrow was a fun addition to the POV cast and I enjoyed how her story arc developed.
The ending set up a far wider conflict and more action for future instalments but did wrap the current story arc in a satisfying enough fashion.
This is a solid but unspectacular sci-fi action series. I might read the third book, which is more of a full size novel than the first two short instalments of the series but I’ll probably take a bit of a break first.
Rating: 3 stars.
Audio Note: This was narrated by Madeleine Brolly. She did a decent job with the audio for this one.
The story and the background are pretty good. I just hated the narrative construction, with too many points of view and some chapters shorter than their titles in which the author confuses brevity with pace. I will definitely read the next one, hoping for something more narratively direct.
This was a good addition to the series, and I like Ramirez' books with Heather Kilgore. Sparrow is also a good character. Kilgore was put in a very difficult position, and it was interesting to see how she extracted herself from the situation. I'm looking forward to the third book.
Even though I liked this book, I've got a few complaints about it. The prologue was completely unnecessary. Having that at the beginning did nothing for the book, other than add a few pages. This is a technique that has been used -- *very* overused -- in TV. It was effective the first five times, but is now just a stand-in for good writing. At this point, if a TV episode starts with a really intense or exciting scene, my wife and I start speculating how far in the past the episode's actual start will be. "2 Days Ago"? "9 Hours Earlier"? Ramirez is a much better writer, and I was really sorry to see he used this stale technique to start this book.
There were three short chapters in the "Interlude - Flashbacks" section. The stuff included in those chapters really should have been included in the appropriate earlier chapters. Using those three chapters was unnecessary and the book wasn't improved by hiding that information until that point. To avoid giving away the reveals in the flashback sections, the earlier chapters ended up having awkward sections to account for the flashbacks. Again, Ramirez is a much better writer than to need this trite trick.
At the moment I am caught up on the series Dumb Luck and Dead Heroes, so since Heather Kilgore appeared in several of those books and Skyler Ramirez is a good author, I decided to try this series. Good decision and this second book has a good storyline. This one includes another character from the Dumb Luck series which added to the action. More of the backstory of this character is revealed. Decent characterizations of the people involved and I liked the humanizing side of the main character. I am also glad I could get this book in paper. Mr. Ramirez, please make sure paper copies of all your books are made available. I do so much screen work that paper copies of books for light reading are much appreciated.
We have a convoluted tale that skips forward and backwards in the timeline of both King’s Cross Agent Heather Kilgore as we meet a new player who is, shall we say quite different from the other characters in the series. The story shows the characters being affected by the double cross, triple cross and other twists that are being made behind the scenes. While this part of the story reaches a stopping point, the book ends with it being clear that this isn’t a cliffhanger. It’s just a pause in the story until the next chapter begins with the next book. Skyler Ramirez is definitely keeping his readers interested & far from bored!
I enjoy the author’s books a lot but this one confused me. I’m getting old but I had trouble keeping all the characters straight. And there’s no explanation of the split personality stuff. Maybe i missed it. But will continue reading
What do you when you add Latino assasins, a red-headed badass woman, space ships, and crooked politicians? A great story by Skyler Ramirez. I highly recommend all the books by this author.
This one took a little time to get into, I'm assuming it's because of the large number of new characters. Once the story got going, it was a lot like Ramirez's other books in this universe, nothing groundbreaking, but entertaining.
And of course I need to read the next book. So I'll order it as soon as I finish writing this. This author is amazing. I can't wait to see how Sparrow is going to handle another personality living in her head. 🙂
The more I read Skyler Ramirez the better it gets! I was skeptical about starting these side stories, but they have proven to be at least as entertaining as the original series!
Skyler Ramirez has mastered the character development. This story introduces us to the team that continues through his world. Good pace, interesting story of loyalties gone bad, frictions between government and citizens, intrigue within and without.
I have enjoyed all of Skyler Ramirez books so far and look forward to the continued story. Enjoyed the peak into the multiple personalities of agent Sparrow.
Unusual to have an action science fiction story with a main character who has a serious psychological problem. Presentation of this problem was a little dull.
