When Evelyn accidentally binds herself to her academic rival, she desperately searches for the remedy in centuries-old magic before the sparks between them burn.
Half-fae Evelyn Knowles is hiding a big secret: her shifter form. Abandoned by her fae father, she has no one to teach her about the change. She’s a little concerned when she determines the animal she turns into is---well--mythical.
As one of the library’s most sought-after researchers, Evelyn knows how to find answers. Before she can, her boss nominates her to investigate a centuries-old magical bond. Whoever solves this problem will be promoted to the top research position in the fae court. The position is a desire she’d never voiced—a dream she thought out of reach. It's also one she’s not guaranteed to win when her rival, Ambrose Yarrow, is competing, too.
When the study of magical bonds leads to accidentally forming one with Ambrose, Evelyn is even more determined to untangle the mysteries of this magic.
Spending any time with Ambrose is too much. He finds her research methods reckless, is a stickler for the rules, and is the library's golden boy on fae history. What’s worse, every conclusion she has drawn about him may be wrong. With the promotion she wants hanging in the balance and an increasingly unmanageable attraction to Ambrose, Evelyn must solve this puzzle. Even if wanting things has never gone well for Evelyn, and wanting Ambrose might be the riskiest experiment of all.
Research with Rivals is a cozy standalone romantasy with spice in the Fae by the Bay series. Every book in this interconnected series can be read independently and ends with a HEA. If you like forced proximity, academic rivals, and half-fae heroines finding their place to belong, you’ll love this sweet and spicy story.
The Fae by the Bay series is set in the same world as Compass Points. Return to this fantasy world with new characters or dive in for the first time.
Thank you to the author for giving me an arc copy ♥️🎀.
This book follows two library researchers, Evelyn and Ambrose. Both are nominated to research a century old bond between the compass points and the old gods. 🙂
The one who solves the problem gets promoted as the top researcher of the Fae court.
Evelyn who is half Fae and an outcast to both the Fae and the humans, decides that she wants the position in order to get other half Fae like her a place in the Fae court.🙂
Things take a turn when they end up bonded together by mistake and now they have to figure out how to remove it.🤭
Evelyn can't decide whether she wants this budding relationship with Ambrose more or the promotion.
This is my second book to read from Jillian and I can't say I'm disappointed. 💁🏾♀️ I love the way the story unfolds and the writing is impeccable. 👏🏾♥️
I love the fact that Ambrose had been PINNING after Evelyn since the day he saw her but he didn't know how to express it. 😭
"Knew what? Knew that this magic has been awkward, distracting, and a million other things, but that I’m thankful for every moment we’ve had together? Or that I’ve been studying you for weeks, but I loved every new fact and facet of you I’ve learned from this connection?” His last words came out in almost a whisper. “I’m not sure I would have discovered them otherwise.”
He has this little notebook where he joltes down his thoughts and when she reads it she finds that he writes about her a lot 😭♥️🎀.
"You write about me a lot,” I said, wincing as the words came out. “I think about you a lot,” he said with no hesitation.
🙇🏾♀️♥️.
Now for my favourite quote 🤭;
"No … you are the one sentence in the book that makes it all make sense. The one that perfectly proves a theory and neatly ties up all the loose threads but I had to read a thousand pages to find.”
I’d read a thousand more if that’s what it took to find you.”
I have this written in my diary because of how goooood it is 🤧♥️.
If you're looking for a cozy standalone romantasy with a meddling god, a pesky bond to break and a handsome wolf shifter who's obsessed with his coworker then this book is for you add it to your tbr 🤭💁🏾♀️.
It's being released this month on the 25th don't forget it. 🙂✨
Author: Jillian Witt Release: 10.21.25 Series: Fae by the Bay, book 2
Jillian is still the Queen of green flags and healthy communication.
This book was EXACTLY what I needed. It was so precious, cozy, and I didn’t want it to end. The second in her new series of interconnected standalones, Fae by the Bay, we get lower stakes Romantasy full of banter, found family, and a dash of spice.
RWR follows 2 first person POVs. We initially meet Evelyn, our half-fae researcher, new to her position of study but no less qualified. Though finally beginning to get the notice she deserves from her work, she still battles insecurity, half/fae prejudice, unstable magic, and workplace competition to her colleague, Ambrose.
When both Ambrose and Evelyn are pulled into a competition for the renowned position of Vesten Historian, these two not only find their opinions on each other challenged, but also accidentally bound in blood. As they work together to amend their mistake as well as fix the Vesten god’s problem, Ambrose and Evelyn face hidden emotions, heal from past wounds, and learn that perhaps two unlikely souls can actually work better together despite their differences.
I LOVED this. Set in an academic setting, I loved that their banter and even intimate moments were along these lines. 🤭 As always, I thoroughly appreciate the way our characters speak to each other and Ambrose’s fall first and harder was TO DIE FOR. I think this is my favorite one in the Compass world yet!!
Tropes you may find in RWR are forced proximity, blood magic and bonds, banter, found family, medium spice, he falls first and harder, shifter fae, cozy Romantasy, academic setting, one bed, spicy woods time, and a HEA.
It’s such a delight to get to read my sixth book by Jillian. And as always, thank you so much for allowing me to be an arc reader!
Rating: 5/5 I received an eARC for my honest opinion.
Jillian Witt has done it again! Every book she’s written has been such a delight, and Research with Rivals was no exception. This story is cozy, easy to fall into, and full of charm — with great characters, clever banter, an engaging academic setting, and a swoon-worthy romance. The writing flows beautifully, the pacing is steady, and while the plot differs from the first book, it delivers new discoveries, secrets, and emotional depth that make it feel fresh and exciting.
In this installment, we meet Evelyn and Ambrose. Evelyn is a fantastic heroine — smart, stubborn, determined, and brave, yet with moments of vulnerability that make her wonderfully real. As a half-fae, half-human, she’s faced judgment all her life, but she turns her fears into strength. Ambrose is her perfect balance: kind, intelligent, slightly awkward, and the ultimate cinnamon-roll love interest. He has his own fears to overcome but always steps up to help Evelyn, deepening their connection in the process. Their rivals-to-lovers dynamic is electric — the magical bond between them only heightens the tension, and when that slow burn finally ignites… it’s pure perfection.
The academic competition to become the next Vesten Historian in the fae court was such a fun and unique backdrop. I loved how it wove in themes of discovery, acceptance, and change within the Fae world — especially for halflings like Evelyn. The inclusion of blood magic, bonds, and research made the story feel layered and immersive without ever feeling heavy.
This book delivers a heartfelt HEA and includes so many fan-favorite tropes: forced proximity, rivals to lovers, found family, one bed, he falls first, blood magic and bonds, cozy romantasy, and a touch of tasteful spice.
Jillian Witt continues to impress with her worldbuilding, emotional depth, and lovable characters. I can’t wait to see whose story she tells next!
I want to thank Jillian Witt for the opportunity to review this book.
Full review to follow : I really enjoy this cozy magical world of compass point. Loved getting to return and explore the world more and see a new couple fall in the most adorable love. We get and intro to these rivals in book one in this series but this can totally be read alone as well and would be just as enjoyable. Our FMC Evelyn is so fiery , intelligent and easy to cheer for !! I really loved that we finally got to see her story. Ambrose may start out as her rival … but well you will have to read how perfect everything turns out. I loved the added bits of magic in this story and I won’t mention them due to spoilers but I think that was my favorite part !!!
Research with Rivals is the next in the cozy fantasy series, Fae by the Bay. The first in the series, Bargains with Benefits, was such a cute and fun read, so I had high hopes. I love the magical world building in this series; it’s enough to make it interesting but not so much that I get bogged down in the details.
Evelyn has a massive chip on her shoulder (which is frankly, warranted) but it does make her a prickly character. Ambrose is just this awkward little nerd, who is so very obviously into her, but Evelyn is so blinded by her own attraction that she doesn’t see it.
I loved the back and forth between them, how much they are drawn together (and oh, the sexual tension, just from that man’s forearms). And the way their shifted forms bonded? Priceless.
I had such a good time with Research with Rivals. It’s got everything I love — a cozy, magical setting, academic tension, and that perfect slow-burn spark between rivals who definitely don’t want to fall for each other but absolutely do.
Evelyn Knowles is half-fae and hiding it while competing for a coveted research spot in the fae library. Ambrose Yarrow is her rule-following, maddeningly perfect rival. They’re forced to work together, and watching the banter turn into real chemistry made me grin like an idiot.
The world feels warm and enchanting without being overcomplicated — all dusty books, hidden magic, and that undercurrent of danger that makes a romance extra addictive. There’s just enough spice to keep things fun, but the focus stays on the emotional pull and the growing connection between them.
If you like rivals-to-lovers, secret identities, fae academia, and cozy magic with a dash of dark allure, this is a must-read. It’s sweet, a little spicy, and totally perfect for curling up with a blanket and pretending you’re in a magical library yourself.
This book was so cozy and delightful. Ambrose is such a golden retriever and when he starts to help Evelyn it was so sweet. Evelyn has been left behind by her father and made to feel worthless as a half fae. She doesn't understand her power or her shift and when Ambrose helps her figure out her magic it brings them closer together. I loved the misconceptions, the only one bed, the rivals to lovers and everything in between. If you want a cozy read, with fantastic characters, and a hea then look no further. There is so much more to this world and I love every book that takes place here. I received an advanced reader copy but these thoughts are my own.
This was so cute! Evelyn and Ambrose are two silly little nerds who have the worst time trying to communicate with each other. Its not the hard-core miscommunication trope that makes you wanna rage, either. watching them grow into figuring out just how much they misunderstood each other was so satisfying. Arctos though. he is a messy bird god and I wouldnt want him any other way.
big thanks to Jillian Witt for the ARC! as always these are my honest opinions
I was swooning along with Evelyn every time Ambrose ran his fingers through his auburn hair. That’s a lot of swooning! This world, and these characters are like a warm hug… the perfect cozy romance read! I also enjoyed the magic, the mystery… and of course, the found family! Thank you so much to the author, and to NetGalley for a chance to get started on this one in advance!
I absolutely loved this story, it was a warm cup of hot chocolate on a cold winter day. Seeing the dynamic between Evelyn and Ambrose change and grow into love was heartwarming. Definitely black cat/golden retriever vibes, with a few magic lessons sprinkled in.
Cute academic rivals to lovers story with banter and laugh out loud moments. I was so excited to get to Evelyn and Ambrose's story after their moments in in Bargains!
I really enjoyed watching Evelyn and Ambrose figure each other out. They are at odds because they come from very different perspective at times, but they are more alike than anything. They have a lot of banter as they each look past their first impressions and really learn more about each other. Some much between them is lost in miscommunication by what they think the other is saying.
Overall, this cozy fantasy will take you on a fun adventure on a quiet afternoon.
Please note: While this is a standalone, there are a lot of connections to the Compass Point series and I recommend reading that first.
Research With Rivals is a cozy, low stakes, fantasy romance. This book takes you back to Sandrin for Evelyn and Ambrose’s story. They are back to rivals despite their brief encounter in the previous book to help Evelyn’s friend, Luna.
Evelyn is so sweet, smart, and determined who has had a rough life being half-fae. Due to the discrimination she has experienced her road has been so hard. From the start I just wanted Evelyn to get everything she worked so hard for. I loved how even though she had some preconceived ideas about Ambrose, she took the time to talk to him once they started to become close. Love a person who grows and is willing to give people a chance to share their perspectives.
Ambrose is also sweet, smart, and determined but he is also a big softy. He has been crushing on Evelyn for sooo long and I loved seeing him get his chance. Even if it was because of an accidental magical bonding. The bonding and close proximity due to the project Ambrose and Evelyn were tasked with, gave Ambrose the chance to prove to Evelyn he was more than meets the eye.
The romance overall is really sweet and gives you all the good feelings. A perfect cozy fall read!
This book made me smile so much! 😍 Research with Rivals is a cozy romantasy set in the world of academic research, and it has all the things I love: enemies to lovers, rivals in the workplace, and that irresistible forced proximity energy.
Evelyn is a brilliant and determined researcher and Ambrose is her long-time academic rival. When they’re forced to collaborate on a joint project, all the tension, competitiveness, and years of misunderstanding start to unravel in the best possible way. It’s told in dual POV, so we get to see both their perspectives which makes their chemistry even stronger. You really feel how they slowly start to see each other differently, moving from sharp banter, to genuine connection, to love. The romance is so well done. It’s not insta-love, but it grows naturally as they spend more time together and start opening up. What I loved most is how the book shows that talking and truly listening can dissolve misunderstandings and prejudice. Through their conversations, they begin to understand each other for real. Evelyn realizes that Ambrose never looked down on her, he actually admired her intelligence and her work all along 🥹. And oh my heart! The scene where Evelyn reads Ambrose’s notebook and finds all those notes and thoughts about her? Every page filled with admiration and care? Absolutely adorable. I might have melted a little there 💕.
As for the steam level, I’d call it open door, but softly written — sensual and emotional rather than graphic. It fits perfectly with the tone of the story.
Both characters have such beautiful growth: Evelyn learns to lower her defenses and accept being seen for who she really is — and for what’s inside her (the wild part of herself she struggles to control) — while Ambrose learns that vulnerability and honesty don’t make him weaker. Their journey of getting to know and truly understand each other feels genuine and deeply satisfying. I also loved how he helps her face and manage that wild side she fears so much — it was touching and emotional 💔✨. And it was so nice to see Luna and Vincent again! I’ve missed them so much! 🥰
We definitely get a happy ending — the kind that makes the whole slow burn absolutely worth it! 💞
Also, can we talk about the cover? It’s so bright and fun — it totally captures the rom-com vibe and that academic tension-turned-romance we all love. 🎓💖 Content warnings: mild academic stress, self-doubt, and a bit of impostor syndrome, but nothing heavy.
Maybe a few parts felt a little long, especially when both characters keep overthinking about their jobs and what comes next — but honestly, it’s a tiny thing compared to how much I enjoyed this story.
Overall, Research with Rivals is charming, funny, and full of heart. I loved the mix of witty banter, emotional depth, and the message that love can grow where rivalry once stood — especially when you finally take the time to listen. 💫💕
Thanks to NetGalley, Jillian Witt and Myth & Magic book club for the ARC!
Research with Rivals by Jillian Witt ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️.25 🌶
What I loved: 📖 rivals to lovers 📚 female friendship 📖 meddling God
This was such a perfectly cozy romance. Ambrose and Evelyn were intelligent and entertaining. The plot was fascinating! This was just everything I was looking for.
The MCs were very likeable and relatable. Evelyn was very black cat and Ambrose gave me golden retriever vibes and that made their dynamic all the better. I loved them putting aside their differences and working together. The scene with them clearing up the misunderstandings healed my heart. They both had great arcs and great chemistry, too. I'm quite sad their story is over because I enjoyed their relationship so much! I mean, the one bed? Plus, the tension? Not to mention Ambrose's jealousy!
Arctos was probably my next favorite character after the MCs. He was curious and meddlesome and made any scene he was in more fun. I sincerely hope we get to meet more of the gods in future novels. I would be happy with just more of Arctos, though!
The humor in this was well done, as well. The dynamics between the difference characters frequently sent me. I loved how protective Seraphina was. Carter's exasperation with Arctos. The MCs accidentally bonding themselves.
Witt built a fascinating plot that these MCs were uniquely qualified to solve. The rivalry was fun and made the conflict more compelling. I loved the exploration of the new magic system and the danger it posed. I was very curious about the conflict and how it would resolve. The plot absolutely kept me in this. I needed to know how it would resolve!
There were a few things I disliked. First, I found the beginning to be a bit slow. I had a difficult time getting into this, but I was reading this on the side so this might have been a me problem. Next, the romance felt a little fast for me. I'd have liked a couple more bonding scenes between the MCs. My main issue was that the supporting cast was underdeveloped. There was so much going on between the plot and the romance that the supporting cast fell to the wayside. I wanted more between Evelyn and her parents. I wanted more between Ambrose and his family, but especially his dad. The resolution with his family felt too easy because of the lack of scenes with them. Also, Carter and Arctos. I have so many questions regarding them! And unfortunately, I don't think they will be answered. Lastly, the ending felt slightly abrupt. I think this book needed to be longer because if it was, my issues with the underdeveloped supporting characters and the somewhat abrupt ending could have been solved.
While I, surprisingly, didn't like this as much as the first book, I still had a great time. This series emanates warmth and coziness. I love this world and the characters! Plus, the library vibes were everything. I had a lovely time reading this and I can't wait to see what comes next from Witt!
Thank you so much for allowing me to be an ARC reader!

Review: I adored this book so much even more probably than the first book in this series! Her writing is impeccable! It’s so cozy and warm! This book was perfect for fall! It gives off all the vibes and the romance! Oh my heart! I love when the female acts like a black cat and the love interest is a golden retriever! It was chef’s kiss! The academic setting was everything for me! The witty banter between the love interests had me kicking my feet! If you’re looking for a cozy fantasy book to pick up this fall this book is perfect!
Thank you so much to the author for giving me the opportunity to read this book in advance!
This was an absolute delight of a story! It has magic, gods, shifting, secret crushes, some spice, and enless sweet moments. A pleasure to read.
Evelyn is a half fae who writes research papers, works at the library and does some shifts at her friends pub.
Ambrose is a fae who writes research papers, works at the library and worships Evelyn from afar.
They met when he visited the records office where she used to work. It was not cute. Then she got a job library. Now they see each other every day. She thinks he is a privileged golden boy who harshly judges her and thinks her reckless. He thinks she is the smartest person he has ever met and loves how she pushes him to be better. They end up in a blood magic bond situation (as you do) and their lives will forever be changed. So good!
Evelyn has grown up not knowing much about her fae side. Her father left when she was little and her mother is human. She doesn't know what she doesn't know, has limited control of her magic and has an unusual shift. And her colleague keeps rolling up his shirt sleeves to show off his hubba hubba forearms. Girlfriend is struggling! And her journey of learning is so sweet to watch.
Ambrose is from an old fae family, so he has all kinds of knowledge and skills when it comes to his fae-ness but is awkward as can be. Him learning how to communicate is absolutely precious.
Adored these two! They are such an amazing team and are absolutely adorable stumbling along trying to sort out who likes who, why and who knows about it.
I really enjoy this series and Jillian's writing. It is captivating and cozy. And there is a lightness to the story that makes it comforting & joyful, even when dealing with the more serious bits.
I received this as an ARC and am beyond grateful. Rest assured it had zero influence on my review.
'Research with Rivals' is a second book in the Fae by the Bay series and it was the book i was very axcited about!
It follows the story of Evelyn, half-fae best friend of Luna and Ambrose (friend of Vincent) who we already met in the first book. They are both researching blood magic and you can tell they were so called 'academic rivals'. When given the opportunity to compete against each other for a new work position they accidentally form a blood magic bond between them, they are forced to work together.
But as they grow closed to each other the question comes up: are they feelings real or is it just the blood magic working?
Since I've read the first book about Luna and Vincent i was thinking to myself that i would LOVE TO see the story about Ambrose and Evelyn and finally the opportunity came and i was NOT dissapointed. I need to admit, i even liked this one better than the first! The chemistry was so good, world building and magic system easy to understand and both of the MCs very likeable. I actually pulled an all-nighter because of this, i just couldn't get off my kindle.
And Ambrose, the man he is.... Golden boy of the library... I loved everything about him!
'You are the one sentence in the book that makes it all make sense. The one that perfectly proves a theory and neatly ties up all the lose threads but i had to read a thousand pages to find' now as a book worm this is the most romantic thing someone could ever say to you.
It's the second book i have read from Jillian Witt but i can already tell i may have found one of my fav series ever, and the fact that i got ARCs of both of the books from it makes it even more special.
all opinions are my own. Thanks for the ARC in exchange for an honest review!
Research with Rivals has several of my favorite tropes - academic rivals, magical forced proximity, and sarcastic meddling gods. This was my first book in this world which has the Compass Points trilogy and the first book in this series, Bargains with Benefits. The other books had been on my to-read list for a while, but when I spotted this on NetGalley I decided to skip ahead. It was pretty easy for me to make sense of the world, all previous knowledge is well explained and referenced.
Academic rivals as a trope make me giddy. Of course Evenlyn and Ambrose think the other hates them and they both go absolutely feral defending the other and their academic knowledge. Yet, still, convinced the other one hates them.
Luckily for them they accidentally bind themselves together with blood magic, the intent from both being to understand the other better and grow together. I love magical forced proximity because it's a good catalyst to make the characters resolve old misunderstandings and actually listen to the other person.
I also absolutely loved how Ambrose was able to help Evelyn with her magic. Because shes is half-fae and did not have her fae father around, no one ever helped her learn how to control her magic and shifter form. Ambrose is so sweet and supportive to her, absolutely a green-flag boyfriend.
Since this was my first book in the world, I wasn’t too familiar with all the side characters but I’m assuming our meddling god, Lord Arctos, who is definitely trying to be a matchmaker. I want to read the other books just because I figure he must be just as delightful there as well!
Thanks Netgalley and Victory Editing NetGalley Co-op for the chance to read this.
After reading the first book in this series I was really excited about this second book. A new couple, a new love story and of course new political and magical issues! Luckily I managed to get an arc from the author.
This story is sweet, cute and also very believable. I liked how these two characters interacted, I liked how they slowly started to trust each other more, how they started to see each other in a different light and how they dare to talk about issues. Some things took a little time, some things took a gentle hand, but in the end these characters did what was best for the other. Combine that with some interesting magic, some emotional bagage and trauma and a world that's on the brink of change and you get a cute, heartwarming story with enough interesting elements to keep you hooked. I can't wait for the next book!
Evelyn and Ambrose are the only two blood magic researchers at the Vesten Library, and are asked to work together on a project for the meddling Vesten God, Lord Arctos. The catch though? Only the first to explain the cause of the time-sensitive issue will receive the promotion to Vesten historian, and both want it.
I absolutely love academic rivals, and the banter growing into tension and then eventual connection between Evelyn and Ambrose was perfect! The readers are able to see into both Evelyn and Ambrose’s minds in this dual POV, and this definitely strengthens the chemistry between the two main characters.
As a half-fae, Evelyn has never been able to fit in. Too fae for humans, and too human for the full fae. Having her fae father disappear at a young age meant that she was never taught how to control her Vesten magic or her shifter animal. I really enjoyed Evelyn’s individual journey towards discovering herself, and Ambrose offering her unwavering support during this was swoon-worthy. Did I mention that he’s a wolf shifter? 😉
The pacing was consistent, and the world building was done well. While set in the same world as another series by the author, you do not need to read others to be able to fully immerse yourself in the world.
If you’re after a cosy romantasy standalone, with rivals to lovers, forced proximity due to an accidental magic bond, and fae academia, please check out Research with Rivals.
Thank you to the author for an advanced copy. This review is my own honest opinion.
It’s raining outside, you just put on your favorite sweats and hoodie. You have candle lit and a cup of tea. You just sat in your favorite reading spot with a cozy blanket. Then you read this book, and you feel at peace.
This book was such a cozy addition to the Fae by the Bay series. I absolutely loved Ambrose and Evelyn’s story. They were mature, had excellent communication skills, and were the dumbest smart people ever to exist 😂 Their accidental magical bound, and need to work together was refreshing and I absolutely loved it! I also loved the god and all of his meddling antics. That was a fun addition to the story. Revisiting some of the characters from Bargains with Benefits was also fun!
Thank you Jillian Witt for an advanced e-copy of this book!
This is my favorite of Witt's books so far. I loved both characters, their rivalry, their interactions while in their shifted forms...everything. Unlike the first story of this series, I feel like we really got to learn a lot about what's happened in the world since the original trilogy. There are some big changes coming, and I can't wait to see what the next book brings.
I really enjoy coming back to this universe with other characters, their paths keep crossing. In this one, I liked the chaotic side of the FMC, and the super discreet MMC, that just wants to help but keeps getting misunderstood. The blood magic technicalities sometimes get a bit hard to understand, but it's really not a big deal. Seeing the rivalry evolve into something more is really interesting, and I was very happy to see some developments for our FMC, even though I saw them coming. It's a heartwarming read !
Thank you Jillian Witt for the eARC! All opinions are my own honest ones. 1- Jillian Witt is a fantastic writer so when I saw that she was asking for arc readers, it was a no-brainer to apply. 2- Academic magical enemies to lovers? 10000% YES! As you can tell by my rating, this is a 5 star book. It's cozy with banter and academia and all the feels. There is a challenge that literally pits our FMC and MMC against each other so the stakes are high. Our FMC is a bit of a black sheep and is very prickly while our MMC is a complete golden retriever golden boy. The ending is absolutely *chefs kiss*. This book is part of an interconnected series that can be read in order or separately. Personally I recommend that you read all of the books because they're fabulous.
Two academic rivals must compete for the most sought after historian position in this cozy fantasy romance.
Evelyn Knowles is a half-fae researcher who studies infamous blood magic. She also recently developed a shifted form, which is common for those with her Vesten heritage. What isn't as common, however, is her shifted form. Evelyn turns into a mythical veil cat, which she believed to be only a legend until she found herself inhabiting one. As one of the Vesten's most sought after researchers, Evelyn is called to study a strange predicament involving the Vesten god, Arctos, and his respective Compass Point, Carter. Unfortunately, she is forced to work with her academic rival, Ambrose Yarrow. When the two accidently use blood magic to bind themselves together, things get even more complicated as they can't stray too far from one another's sides. Desperate to solve both problems, Evelyn and Ambrose must work side by side and put aside their differences to overcome these challenges.
I seriously love this world that Jillian Witt has created! Since reading the first book, "Bargains with Benefits," I've actually went back and read the first two books in the "Compass Points" series, which gave me a ton more insight about this world. For one, I actually know who Arctos is and I have since learned the major tea about the Mist Plague. Reading a big chunk of the first series also gave me a better understanding of the court system and the magic that each type of fae possesses.
In book one, I was a huge fan of Evelyn's standoffish nature and Ambrose's nerdy yet confident vibe. Getting to learn their story felt like meeting them all over again, and it was truly a blast. These two are both such awkward nerds who struggle severely to flirt and open up with one another, but it makes for a great reading experience.
Much like with Vincent's wind magic, Ambrose's wolf is obsessed with Evelyn, which is so darn cute! In turn, Evelyn's veil cat has a thing for Ambrose, which makes it really sweet seeing their two animals trying to nudge them together.
Evelyn also has some daddy issues, much like Luna. Her father has been missing for the last twenty years, and she can't help but think that he abandoned her family. This obviously leads to some pretty tense situations when she meets him down the road. It would be so hard to reconcile with someone like a parent after not knowing them for over two decades. However, learning to forgive and to be vulnerable enough to trust are both very important things that everyone needs to learn to do for themselves.
The ending to this book was super predictable, but that didn't make it any less cute or exciting! Evelyn and Ambrose truly deserve a chance to be happy together and get in good graces with all members of their families, so I'm glad that things worked out the way they did (even if it was overly convenient for the main characters). Sometimes one just needs a happy ending regardless of how fluffy it is!
I am curious to see who the next book will be about. I feel like Seraphina is a pretty solid guess, but I'd be satisfied with it following Skye or Juliet, too. All the characters in this world are so good, so I'm cool with reading anyone's story, regardless of who's it is.
Overall, "Research with Rivals" is a great follow up to "Bargains with Benefits." As always, being in the world of the "Compass Points" is such a joy and I truly loved every minute of it. Ambrose and Evelyn are nerds in the best of ways, and I really enjoyed following their awkward romantic journey. These books truly have the best cozy vibes, and I look forward to curling up with the next installment of this series!
4,5☆ rounded down to 4☆! First of all, thank you so much to Netgalley and the author for the early copy!
Okay, time to cry. I legit LOVED this book! Possible spoilers ahead.
Fun fact; when I applied for this book in NetGalley, I was STUNNED by the beauty of the cover because HOLY MOlY! ABSOLUTELY GORGEOUS! I had not realized it was the second book in the series(though you can read them alone) i started reading the first book and OMG THEY BOTH DID NOT DISAPPOINT!
I loved the entire set up; - rivals for the same position(promotion) -magical building - understanding -growing with each other -one bed hehe - magically bound to each other! So yes, i was sold. You might be asking, then why 4,5? Well I think this series could have been better of YA instead of NA. (Though, i think the first book was YA but for this book it kind of was necessary for the plot for it to be NA, iykyk) Also, even though i loved the whole plot and the story, i must say that some of the pharagraphs were toooooooo long. Or just unnecesary. I don't how to explain it, at some point i was skimming through some of the lines in the story. I felt like they did not really contribute to the story but were just there. It did not feel like i was ' watching' the story in my head but i was just staring at lines...
I LOVED, DEVOURED, ATE the fact that they were both so good in their fields that they were figuring things out about the magic bond, but not saying anything to each other to not embarrass or mislead the other! SO. FRICKING CUTE! But while reading about the worldbuilding and Vesten point vesten historian etc, i realized i barely know anything about them and i probably should read Jillian Witt's other series which probably explains those! So they. went on my tbr so quick!! I also hope to see the book of Seraphina! She was so supportive throughout the series and i think she really deserves her own book as well. so; here are some of my fav lines/quotes;
-"She said she thought about me all the time. I thought she was..."" Interested in you? You thought she was telling you she had feelings for you, just like you do for her" Vincent knew from the beginning YALLL> -" I call you the library golden boy in my head" " It' s not always in your head Evelyn, I have heard it" HEHEHHEHEHEH - Ambrose being jealous of Carter, YES PLEASE! -" Calm down wolfy, it's not what you think" Lord Arctos is a shiper from the beginning hehhe -" You are the one sentence in the book that makes it all makes sense. The one that perfectly proves a theory and neatly ties up all the loose threads but i had to read a thousand pages to find" .." I'd read a thousand more if that's what took to find you" HOLY MOLYYYY -pros and cons to moving to Compass Lake"only one pro,The privilage of lovng Evelyn, if she let's me" Im crying at this point. -His scribbled notes? imma cry real quick. " You write about me alot." " I think about you a lot" - Also the fact that Lord Arctos made a bet with the woman in the inn about how they will be getting one room next time>>>>>

Since reading the first interconnected book in this series, Bargains with Benefits, I had it BAAAAAD for Evelyn and Ambrose!! These enemies to lovers, workplace rivals were everything I hoped they would be and more!
Their chemistry was amazing!! From their mutual hidden crushes and misunderstandings to watching them face their attraction due to their forced proximity, these two were so fun to watch!! I loved them having to be close to one another due to their own blood bond that erroneously occurred, and how that caused them to see one another in new lights. I especially loved how they were also compatible in their shifted forms. And that primal play scene? 😏
I loved Evelyn so much!! She was the picture of feminism and fighting for your spot at the table, and she was so sarcastic and smart that it was hard not to love her. I hated that she had felt ostracized her entire life, coming from a society that didn’t value half-fae, but I loved how strong she was. I also loved watching her learn to work with her animal instead of against it. She didn’t like relinquishing control but as soon as she learned that her animal was her and would never do her wrong, she learned that she could let go in other areas of life as well.
I also loved Ambrose!! He was such a sweet guy, he was just incredibly cautious which Evelyn took as the typical dismissal of her that she had faced her entire life. I loved how as he came to know Evelyn, he realized so much about her and her magic and taught her the things she had always sought to learn about the fae ways, of course in the sweetest and most delicate ways possible. His disgust at their society for tossing Evelyn aside was so prevalent from the beginning of the story, and he was such a fantastic MMC to crush on!
I loved how we got to explore so much in blood magic, both from the potential negative effects side and the wonderful possibilities point. There are so many different fae with different magic types that I love exploring them all in the different books.
I really enjoyed Carter, the past Vesten historian (the position they compete for) and current Vesten Point. I’m curious what his situation is because I would love to see more of him, which would probably include him ending up with a FMC in a book in the series if he doesn’t already have someone from a previous series 🤣
While there were times he was insufferable, I actually really loved Lord Arctos. He was confident and cocky in a loveable way, cheeky but not rude, and loved a bit of gossip just like the rest of us. He was fun to watch have interactions with others in the story, especially Carter who you could tell couldn’t stand his methods just as much as Evelyn and Ambrose 🤣
Lastly, what the heck is Seraphina hiding?!?!? I need her book next, obviously!!
Thank you to Jillian Witt for the opportunity to read this book. The thoughts and opinions expressed above are honest and my own.
