Hey, you! Yeah, you looking this book over! It’s me, comedian Josh Blue. You know me from winning Last Comic Standing, or getting third place on America’s Got Talent, or maybe you just saw me wobbling through the airport. If you don’t know me at all, I’m the comic who puts the cerebral in cerebral palsy.
Something To Stare At is my first book, and it’s all about my From my harrowing birth and subsequent emergency flight out of Africa, to sharing a zoo cage with a silverback gorilla, to traveling the world as a Paralympian on the U.S. soccer team, my journey has been as unpredictable as my right arm.
We’ll also saunter through my comedy career, from its humble start to performing on the world’s biggest stand-up stage, as well as my lifelong challenge of overcoming others’ preconceived ideas of disabled people—for those of you who need your inspiration porn.
You may think you know me, but after reading Something To Stare At you’re probably going to know more than you want to. And if you’re still reading this far, just buy the damn book already!
“Josh always shovels his walk in a timely fashion.” —Neighbor to the left
“He doesn’t floss properly, but still has great teeth.” —Josh’s dentist
“Wow, only took him twenty years to finish this.” —College roommate
“Pretty good book for a guy who can’t read.” —Local librarian
Josh Blue’s book was unlike anything I expected it to be. It was a million times better. Unlike most people, I did not hear about Josh through “Last Comic Standing,” instead, coming across a couple of YouTube clips that had me rolling. I found out he was going to be playing live near my home at the time and saw him in person. He had me dying laughing right out the gate. I became a fan for life. However, it wasn’t until I read this book that I learned about how he got his start. And truth was definitely more strange than fiction. This book fills in all the blanks. The things you’ve noticed but didn’t know where or why they were there. This book answers them. His stories are heartfelt and truthfully raw, as only he could tell to someone else who wrote it for him. If you weren’t a fan of Josh Blue before you read this book, well, you probably still won’t because most people aren’t a fan because of his stellar book writing skills. But if you liked Josh Blue before reading this book, you can’t help but be drawn into his world. (I think I got a contact high from reading) I know it’s 20 years after his win on “Last Comic Standing” but congratulations Josh. You deserved the win, and reading your book and story brought me on that journey with you. Thanks for sharing, thanks for the laughs, and thanks for entertaining me all these years. If you like Josh Blue, get this book!
one of my absolute favorite comedians about his life. Josh recounts his childhood, detailing how he navigated life with a disability in a foreign land. One of the highlights of his youth was his passion for soccer. Transitioning from his early years, Josh's journey took a surprising turn when he discovered his talent for comedy. His unique perspective on life, coupled with his ability to find humor in his own experiences, propelled him into the spotlight. He gained national recognition after winning the fourth season of "Last Comic Standing," such a great read and interesting life he has lived.
This book was alright. It was interesting to read about what his life has been like. The reason I docked it two stars though is because I was under the impression that it was a new release when I bought it a month ago (from Josh Blues website itself), however the book ends after his bit on Last Comic Standing. I was hoping for a little more insight into his life after he had gone on AGT and seemed to get a lot of fame from that. Overall, it's not a bad book, but it's also not what I had expected. There was a lot of laughter in the beginning but you could tell by the end of the book that writing this must have felt more like a chore than a good project for him.
I typically don't care for biographies/autobiographies, but when they're written by one of today's best living comedians, they can be very amusing! I've seen Josh perform a handful of times and he's always been a delight, but learning about his diverse and wholly unique life experiences gave me even more appreciation for his work. He weaves plenty of jokes into the book that fully deliver, and I found myself laughing out loud several times and had a hard time putting this one down.
Strong recommend for fans of comedy, soccer, and/or Denver residents!
