Ghost Townies #2

Ghostlighted

Rate this book
In the weeks since he moved to Ghost, Oregon, Maz Amani’s life has gotten so much better.

Charming small town? Check. Queen Anne beauty of a house? Check. Project organizing the fascinating papers of Ghost’s founding family? Check. Adorable handyman who might morph into more than a friend? Check. Rafts of friendly townies? Check.

And did he mention the house?

Sure, there’s the occasional professional annoyance—ghostwriters can’t always be picky about the gigs they take in the name of keeping their cat in kibble. But on the whole, things are awesome.

If only Maz felt like he deserved this mountain of good fortune. Because seriously? What had he ever done to earn it?

Zip. Zilch. Nada.

He’d never even heard of Uncle Oren or his life partner, Avi, who’d predeceased Oren by a decade. Yet Maz had inherited all their worldly goods.

Including, you know, the house.

Maz is determined to pay those men back for transforming his life—and he knows just how to do it.

By transforming Avi’s afterlife.

Because Avi? Yep, still around, sharing the house with Maz and putting the ghost in Ghost.

Ghostlighted is the second in the Ghost Townies small town paranormal mystery series. While the books contain romantic elements, they are not romances, and are intended to be read in order, because, you know, spoilers.

Another wonderful ghostly adventure

Absolutely wonderful once again, I love this world that EJ is building and the tiny town of Ghost.

The slooooooow burn romance is a secondary aspect really to the main feature of the book, that of a two-fold cosy mystery coupled with a paranormal investigation into Avi's appearance.

While I had pretty much guessed this plot's outcome in book one (it was clear to me that the villain of this instalment would be who it was based on info given then), it still didn't affect my enjoyment.

In fact, I'd go as far to say that I very much loved seeing said horrible person getting their just deserts.

We get to meet a new family in this one too, and there's lots of development on the friendship growing between the ghostly Avi and Maz, which is really lovely.

Not sure when we're getting more but I'm here for it.

Another cosy supernatural mystery from EJ Russell. Must mention here that this is not a standalone. It's book two of a series, and Ghost Ridden should be read first of all. I don't want to say too much about this second story, I hate reviews that give out too many spoilers. Let's just say that it's a typical EJ tale (not that I'm complaining), and leave it at that.

I loved this one, as much as I did the first one in the series. It's such a feelgood story, with lots of mystery & intrigue. Maz and Ricky are obviously attracted to one another, but it's obvious that Ms. Russell is going to draw their relationship out. She's famous for her slow burn romance, and I'm here for it. The guys are so sweet together. I also love the relationship between Maz and Avi, the ghost of the house, and Maz's uncle. It was extremely well written, and I couldn't put it down, I read it in one sitting. I wholeheartedly recommend this series, if you enjoy mystery, intrigue, a little bit of suspense, all rolled up in the supernatural. I can't wait to read the next one.

Ghostlighted is the second book in the Ghost Townies series. This series is best read in order. We are back with Max and Ricky for another adventure in the town of Ghost Oregon. This was another fun book in the series. The romance between Max and Ricky is sweet but very slow burn. I don't want to give any spoilers so just know I enjoyed seeing old and new characters in this story. I can't wait to see what E.J. Russell comes up with next for this series. If get the audio narration, Greg Boudreaux does a wonderful job of narrating this series. He makes the change in characters seamlessly. I can't wait to listen to the next book. I would definitely recommend this book and series.

okay this was so cute. and it's so nice to have a story with mature adults that's not five sex scenes in a 250 page gook. Gil and Avi have to be my favorite characters, though Maz is pretty great as an MC. I cannot WAIT for book 3! 🥰

'Ghostlighted' (Ghost Townies, Book 2) written by E.J. Russell

First of all, this book is part of a series so if you haven't read Book 1 ('Ghostridden') yet, go read that first, otherwise this book won't make any sense to you!
(or listen, as it's out on Audible now; at the time of this review, this book (Book 2) is not yet out on Audible)

Great series with colorful characters! 'Ghost' is the name of the town, as well as the condition of one of the MCs, who is a bit confused and upset on discovering he's dead.

Villiany abounds! New characters and old characters vie for attention as our intrepid ghostwriter tries to deal with multiple characters, the living and the dead-but-not-gone, as well.

I liked how Avi, the resident ghost in the house, is starting to come to terms with his condition (you know, dead!) and really tries to befriend and be helpful to Maz, who inherited Avi's & Owen's house after the death of Avi's former lover and would-be husband, Owen, Maz's originally un-beknown-to-him 2nd cousin once removed. Owen and Avi never had the chance to formally marry once the laws about same-sex marriages started changing, before they each died under tragic circumstances.

This time around a lot of the focus shifts to Maz's neighbor, Sofia, who it seems is being targeted in an unfortunate series of accidents...or are they something else, and not accidents?

Of course our favorite cat, Gil, is back...harumping his way around and discovering some surprises all on his own!

New villains as well as old come to light, as well as new potential friends; can't wait for more!

As for Maz and Ricky's "romance"...um, slower than cold molasses running uphill in winter snow. The friendship development is cute, though slow and a bit trepiditious, due to both guys past experiences with other lovers. They'll get there, they just need time and to develop trust.

Love this series!

(I don't have time to finish my reviews for a few days, but I'll be back...(ok, Arnold, lol))

Two thumbs up! 👍👍

Could not put it down. Engaging story and a good sequel to Ghost Ridden. i LOVE the mystery aspect of it, this time about Maz and Avi’s neighbour Sofia. This is a developing series and so i’m guessing there’ll be a lot more books to follow which means i’ll probably forget it all. But it’s such a feel good story!
🔹Story- 4.8⭐, Characters- 5 (excluding villains)⭐, Sex- n/a⭐, Epilogue- n/a⭐

●Whoa from the beginning we’re hit with angst. About the whole wedding that was supposed to happened but couldn’t bcuz of the murder of Avi. Have i told you how much i love Avi?

●Also narrated by Greg Boudreaux.

●Love the banter between Maz and Avi in this. Avi shines in this one. They’re becoming friends and he is trying his best to make Maz accept that this is HIS home now too. Aww

●Maz gives Avi’s (his) royalty money to help Sophia get to her condescending grandson. 🥺 But she goes to the hospital and hence the plot. Shame that the grandson is the most fucked up person you’ll ever come across.

●Omg so Ricky’s love language is acts of service and Maz is physical touch!! And we can clearly see something blooming. Even though this series is NOT A ROMANCE, but we can see good friendship building between these 2. They are oblividiots and Avi points it out lmao. Again, nothing happened here.

♦Here we finally meet the abusive ex. He’s fucked up in every way. Reading that was kinda triggering. Oh but the way he got OWNED by Ricky was just so good!!

♦We also meet the douche canoe liam aka Sofia’s grandson. He is a racist pos who is trying to white wash his own race away. He’s just yucky, can go f/ck himself.

📗Tropes & tags: Multicultural MC, ghost SC, mystery, found family, mid/high angst, small town, 3rd person singular pov.

This is a sequel to Ghostridden, which should be read first!

Ghostwriter Maz Amani is adjusting to living in his own house, inherited from his “Uncle” Oren – who’s actually his mother’s second cousin – and to living with a resident ghost – Avi – Oren’s lover and would-be husband. Part of settling in involves picking up the last several boxes of his possessions which Maz left in storage with his ex. Maz is also delving deep into the history of Ghost, in his gig organizing the papers archived at Richdale Manor, which document years of experiments in the occult.

Ricky always seems to be around helping both Maz and Maz’s neighbor, Ricky’s Tia Sophia. When Maz receives a windfall payment, he offers to send Ricky’s Tia Sophia to Boston to attend her grandson Liam’s graduation from Harvard. Everyone’s enthusiasm for this plan comes to an abrupt halt when Ricky finds his Tia, collapsed in her garden, barely alive – and is then arrested for attempted murder. Maz’s and Avi’s skills and capabilities are stretched to the limit to discover who really caused Tia Sophia’s collapse, and free Ricky.

To avoid spoilers, I’ve only shared a few highlights. We revisit several characters from Ghostridden, as well as meet a handful of new characters. Maz is definitely on the way to being an integral resident of Ghost, and I can’t wait to see what else E.J. Russell dreams up for him – and Avi.

I received an advanced reader's copy of this book, and am voluntarily submitting this review.

“Ghostlighted” by E.J. Russell is the second book in the ‘Ghost Townies’ series that features Maz, who has inherited a house that comes with its own resident ghost, Avi. Maz’s reluctant to use the earnings from Avi’s writing, but he’s searching for a way to expand Avi’s environment. He tries to do something generous for his next-door neighbor, even as he continues to explore his attraction to her nephew, but tragedy strikes, and all of his plans may be destroyed.

This adult gay paranormal story should be read only after “Ghostridden,” as there are multiple ongoing threads that interconnect the two. I love the multiple characters who people the town of Ghost, especially the intrepid Gilgamesh who can interact on his own with the ghost, Avi. There is a slow-burn romance developing, a celebration of family as well as the realism that pretty much all families have a bit of dysfunction, and a hint of mystery, that all form a delicious and intriguing story. I love all of the ironies, including the ghostwriter coming to the town of Ghost, the legacy of the ghosthunter who never managed to meet his prey, and the search to reverse-engineer ghost-hunting equipment to allow a ghost to be heard. This is a fun series, and I can’t wait to find out what happens next.

We get to spend more time in the quirky town of Ghost, Oregon in the latest installment of this cozy paranormal mystery series by EJ Russell, and a fun time it is.

Maz is still coming to terms with his windfall of a new house and the changes in his life since he's moved to ghost, mainly involving various relationships including Ricky, a sexy neighbor of his, and Avi, his deceased ghost uncle. While the boyfriend situation continues to be on the backburner, Maz and Avi's relationship continues to grow and takes some interesting twists, including Gil the cat's presence, of course. There are some intriguing moments to be had as Maz and Avi gradually try to understand Avi's manifestations and powers.

I found a few elements of the mystery a bit predictable, but the reveal of the villain and his plans are still handled well, nonetheless. And Maz's efforts to stop them from carrying out their plan (with a bit of ghostly assistance, of course) led to a quite fun finale.

Overall, a fun and solid read. I'd rate it a strong 3.5, rounded up due to some intriguing characters and well thought out finale.

I love this series, with its mix of paranormal, wonderful characters, and an overarching plotline. An added bonus with this story was the cameo appearance of fan favourites from another series.

I love how Maz is slowly moving forward, and making a life for himself in Ghost. His ex is a nasty self-centred piece of work who has gaslighting down to an artform. I loved how supportive Ricky is, and Maz in return when things go down in Ricky’s family. I like how slow-burn their relationship is, and why they both need it to be.

I love Avi, and how far he’s come. Literally. I hope he and Oren will finally be able to be together in their afterlife. I like Avi and Maz’s friendship, and how Gil can see Avi too.

Ricky’s family – most of them – are wonderful. I love how they’re all there for each other, and how he has cousins everywhere. I love Sofia, and I was very happy about how Liam’s storyline panned out. He’s such a horrible person.

The paranormal part of the story is intriguing, and I’m looking forward to seeing what happens next.

This is book two in the Ghost Townies series.

Maz moves to a small town in Oregon, to live in a house willed to him by his uncle. The house has a current noncorporeal resident, though, and together, they solve mysteries.

These are more cozy mystery than light romance. They are meant to be more about the friendship between Maz and Avi, with a little bit of intrigue and a lot of heart.

As the books develop, we get to know the townsfolk better, and by the second book, there's a built-in shorthand between the characters. For this reason, it's better to read or listen in order.

The "bad guys" are a bit one-dimensional, yet I believe that's deliberate, in service of the story.

Greg Boudreaux's narration is delightful as ever, allowing the listener to feel the anxiety, excitement, hope and affection of each character.

Though each story concludes at the book's end, there is a larger storyline carried across the series, that will be interesting to watch unfold.

My reviews are my own. If you liked this book, I’m glad you enjoyed it. This is merely my opinion, so let's keep it courteous.

Goodness....this one was worse than the first one......the first 3 chapters are wasted on the moron MC, not wanting to use the money of dead people. They are dead!!!!!! They can't use the money! I didn't like him on the first one and still don't like him on this one. So much unnecessary drama!!! Repetitive, incredibly predictable, boring, and the cover still looks like an 80s sitcom. Also, what's up with the teen behavior toward Ricky??? Dude, you are 30 YO if you like someone, TELL THEM, don't act like you are in one of Jane Austen's books blushng!!!!!! Sometimes, it feels like I'm reading a F/M book rather than an M/M book. Total hot/cold character wishy-washy personality, not for me!

On to my next adventure, Happy Readings!!!!

Ghostlighted is book 2 in the Ghost Townies series and should be read in order.

This series and most of its characters (both main and secondary) are delightful! I really like Maz, even if I wanted to shake him more than a few times with how difficult he was about cashing Avi's royalties' check, especially considering he really needed the money and he'd earned it. I also like Ricky and their very slow-burn romance; they're sweet and have a lot of chemistry.

To be honest, the only one I didn't like was Liam, but considering how he treated Sofia, whom I adore. I'm glad he got his comeuppance.

Overall, a great addition to the series! I'll be looking forward to more. Highly recommended.

Another great book by EJ Russell! I often get her ARCs and they’re yet to disappoint.

Also, odd that this isn’t categorised as such (at least as of August 2025) but this is a sequel to Ghostridden.

While I would have liked there to be more romance, I loved the book anyway! The mystery was well done, and the slow ghostly powers developing this was cool. I did guess bits and pieces though, especially because of the way certain people were described.

Looking forward to the future books in this series!

Ghostridden was fun and this one edges it out as most favorite. So very nearly believable story series told by Maz who, at 30, inherits a beautiful Queen Anne style home in a small town across the state from a relative he hadn't known he had. Along with the house he finds himself the only one (except for his cat) who can interact with one of the former owners. And so begins the series of fun and arrests!

Delightful

I love this world.
Maz, Ricky, Tia Sofia, Avi, and Gil are all back along with some new characters.
The romance between Maz and Ricky continues at a "glacial pace" according to Avi but there's progress despite both being leery because of past ex issues.
Avi has some progress as well, experimenting with Maz to see the full extent of his ghostly powers.
Tia Sofia has an incident that Ricky is falsely accused of and Liam, that jerk is behind it but he gets his just desserts.
Gil has a little side adventure that ends in a happy situation.
I can't wait for more from this quirky town and it's inhabitants.

This was ok.

I'm glad that there was some advancement to Ari's abilities. I really hated the Liam side story. UGH, some people are just scum and UGH.

Also, I know it's banter and I LOVE it but there were times that Maz and Ari were just so short with each other. I mean, really? Really?

I just felt like we were introduced to a lot, including the new owners of the B&B, and then nothing was really closed except for Liam, thank goodness. But then again, I guess the author is going for multiple books in a series so I can understand the need to stretch it out.

Hopefully, I will continue on...

I must say that I am absolutely loving this series. It is the kind of lovely, small town cozy mystery story that is especially satisfying to read on a rainy day. These books should definitely be read in order for maximum enjoyment. I purchased my copy directly from the author, so I was able to read it a week earlier than if I purchased it from Amazon. I highly recommend doing this if you’re able as it both helps support your favorite authors and decreases the profits that the zon makes. Win win.

4.5 rounded to 5.0

Maz Amani’s adventures as the only person to actually see a ghost in Ghost, OR, continue. This story is just as charming and quirky as the first, with a satisfying puzzler of a mystery, a ghost who’s learning the extent of his abilities, and Gilgamesh, the fabulous cat. Through it all, Maz continues to make connection with the citizens of Ghost and start some mutually desired steps to actually dating Ricky Vargas - who also is somehow related to most of Ghost. A delightful, warm, good-hearted, cozy mystery that hits all the right notes.

Ghostlighted is an excellent continuation of the Ghost Townies series. I enjoyed seeing secondary characters from the first book, both alive and, well, not so alive. They do a lot to support the storyline while also adding color and humor.
I reread the first book in the series prior to reading this one, and I’m glad I did. The refresher kept me on track with the characters.
This story captured my attention, and I am waiting impatiently for book three. I have so many questions…
Maz and Ricky are the very definition of ‘slow burn’. I don’t know whether I’m excited or impatient about that. Maybe both. They will be a wonderful couple if they can ever get to it, but it’s cute, funny, and a little sexy watching them watch each other.
I look forward to more from this author.

I love this series!!!

This is my favorite series by this author with Quest Investigations a very close second. The town and the characters are so fun to read. Max is so busy doing for others and getting answers for them hopefully he will get some too. I can’t wait for the next one. I’m a mom to two awesome orange cats, Luna and Blaise, so I know just how awesome Gil is and I love is name.

Well written cozy but little plot

The first book in this series was a gripping mystery. This book is like the middle of a novel, where you have character development and background—nothing to sneer at! But the narrative drive is weak. I wasn’t sure I was going to finish. Things do happen at the end, but in a bit of a rush. I hope more is going on in the next book and that the slow burn heats up.

I really enjoyed this new book in this series. At one point Maz's and Ricky's budding relationship is compared to moving at the speed of a glacier, very good comparison. The story is never boring though, just don't expect any steam, just lots of pining. I'm sure they'll get there in the end, Someday ;)
The mistery part of the story I did see comming but It wasn't boring. I'd love to read more in this series definitly!

This is the second book in the Ghost Townies series. I love all the characters who live in the small town of Ghost, and I love the ghost and all the new things he and Maz are discovering in their new life. The pace is wonderful and hard to put down. The romance is very slow burn, which is a lovely change. I can’t wait for the next adventure.

Absolutely delightful second read in E.J.’s oh so good Ghost Townies. This latest picks up just a few days after the first one. Maz is still loving his house, his cat, his resident ghost. Yes, Ricky is still around, still vague about how many cousins, what is his job. Avi learns what else he can do, thank goodness. Ghost with all its various citizens still is such a part of this world. We get hints about The Manor. And absolutely the best cameo!! May I say, the perfect comeuppance to the bad guy! Love it. But our two idiots are still so slow burning but it’s perfection! E.J. does a fabulous job of reminding us who everyone is but you will love this story so much more if you read the first.
