As a son of the Ravenor crime family, Callum’s duty is reclaim what the gods have stolen and destroy anyone who stands in his way. Loyalty is to family first—and nothing second.
As a fourth-born, Callum was never meant to exist. Half demon, half incubus, he feeds on fear to survive, slipping into nightmares to hunt the horrors that lurk in the dark. But his own mind is a prison of intrusive thoughts and compulsions, each day haunted by the cursed number four.
Then she appears.
A woman who walks through his nightmares as if she owns them and watches him from the shadows with eyes that see too much. A woman he can’t help but be drawn to—her darkness calls to his own, her presence both a torment and a forbidden thrill.
But when she reveals who she truly is, it’s already too late. Callum is too deep in his mission to take down the gods and punish them for everything they’ve done to his family… and to him.
Each encounter with her ignites something deeper, something dangerously close to fate. Her desire feeds his power more than fear ever has, leaving him hungry for more—for her touch, her submission, her light and darkness entwined.
But what happens when she discovers he’s the criminal she’s been hunting all along? And what will he do when he realizes that loving her might mean betraying everything he’s ever known?
Every damn time, I absolutely love Shay Taylor’s books. This one was a bit harder to read due to Callum’s mental health. The anxiety, panic attacks, self-harm, and self-deprecation was a lot…and yet relatable. Who he became after being with the goddess? Resilient and strong, and she helps heal and soothe his soul. I absolutely hated his family and wanted to gut them myself. Things do change as well as feelings towards them but 3/4 of the time I wanted to jump into the damn book lol. As weak minded and “pathetic” as most people saw Callum…him in the bedroom though?? 😳😮💨 Just gonna say…love that for the goddess 😍. Next up is God of Desire and I am sooo excited to see how this goes 😏😏.
The author has a remarkable way of pulling you into a world that feels completely alive—dark, magical, and utterly addictive. From the very first page, you can feel the atmosphere wrapping around you, making it impossible to look away.
The characters are what truly make this story shine. They’re not your typical heroes and villains—they’re complex, flawed, and fascinating. Each one has their own motives and layers that make you want to know more with every turn of the page.
And just when you think you’ve figured it all out, the story shifts, catching you off guard in the best possible way.
If you’re craving a fantasy that’s eerie, immersive, and unforgettable, this book needs to be on your TBR.
Another 5⭐️ for Shay Taylor! This is the second ARC by Shay Taylor, I was unable to put down until I was finished. This book is Callum story. Callum is the fourth born of the Ravenor crime family. I instantly fell in love with Callum despite his mental health challenges. Then she appears; walking through his nightmares and stalking him through the shadows. He has an unexplained attraction that is a torment and a forbidden thrill. My heart broke for him🥺. Enough said ;no spoilers. This is a must read in the Fourth Born Series.
Tropes include: Dark fantasy She falls first Godly FMC Fated mates Crime family Mental health representation Childhood trauma Thank you !!! Shay Taylor once again , for the opportunity to read this ARC.
The first book in this standalone series was my very first 10/10 of the year, so of course my expectations for book two were sky-high! I kept waiting and waiting… and then somehow completely missed the ARC sign-ups 🤦♀️. Thankfully, the author is absolutely lovely and added me to the list afterward. Huge thanks to Shay Taylor for the e-ARC!
Each installment tells its own story, since every book focuses on a different couple, but there are plenty of references to earlier events. For that reason, I’d definitely recommend reading the series in order. Familiar faces also pop up and stir up a bit of chaos, which I loved. We also get to see them in a new light!
Callum’s story didn’t hit me quite as hard as Morrigan’s in Shadows of the Gods, but I still had a fantastic time reading – and yes, I've been a sobbing mess over the fates of both Callum and Lanie. I honestly don’t know how Shay Taylor does it, but she turns me into an emotional wreck every time.
One of my favorite aspects of this series is how both sets of main characters grapple with serious issues (example - Callum's OCD) yet still manage to find new family and acceptance in their partners – flaws, scars, and all.
The plot also delivers: Callum is torn between joining the family business or choosing the stalker goddess, all while a larger plot brews in the background.
And then there’s the tease for the next couple – it looks like it’s going to be explosive! I mean, how else can you describe a priestess who believes desire is the ultimate sin paired with the god of desire himself?
P.S. I loved the nod to Morrigan’s voices – I’d love to “hear” them – but the fact that Death spoke to them directly might be even better.
My rating: 7/10
Polska wersja:
I can't get enough of this series. I love how it's all interconnected due to the gods being siblings.
The thing about Shay's writing is she makes the chemistry and sexual tension between the two main characters absolutely electric! I couldn't get enough!
I loved Callum and the Goddess of Nightmares story! I won't spoil her name, it's all part of the fun!
Callum bless him has had a hard time. Shay writes awful parents. I mean Morrigan's family in book 1 were awful and so is Callum's but I love that through different events we see different sides of them and discover it's all a bit complex.
Through him we get OCD rep, trauma and anxiety and we see just how his whole childhood has shaped him into someone who doesn't feel he is worthy of love or capable of understanding it.
Enter the Goddess of Death, Lanie (that's not her real name but it's what she lets him call her as well as affectionately calling her Stalker), who really sees him and never gives up even when he pushes her away. She's brilliant and I really like her character. Watching them fall in love is great and I love the banter, especially when she is in raven form!
There is so much to enjoy in this story. I love the dark undertones and I liked the reappearance of characters from book one.
The magic system is interesting and we see a lot take place in dreams / nightmares. I found some chapters heartbreaking and emotional.
I am so excited for book three especially as we are teased throughout this book about the characters it will focus on. Then we get that sneak peak at the end!! My oh my I know it's going to be a tantalising instalment.
I did receive a link for an arc of this book but it went to my junk folder. I have ensured any future emails from Shay are not missed. When I realised I missed the deadline I was so happy it was on KU. I hope I get s shot at book three!
If you are looking for a fun, spicy, emotional and exciting fantasy story look no further than this series! You won't regret it!
Starting of strong with the dedication. Love it! "For those battling the endless cycles within. May we break free from the chains of our minds." I felt this one. 💜
This book is book two in a series. If you haven't read Shadows of the gods yet my advice is to start from there.
▪︎ fated mates ▪︎ literal groveling ▪︎ touch her and die ▪︎ possesive MMC
In this book we are following the journey of a new couple. The MMC is the perfect imperfect lovable Callum Ravenor. It is amazing how well described the struggles with OCD are. Some food for thought.
I love this quote about it: "OCD isn't a quirk. It's living every day with a mind that turns against you." So many people are using it as look at my fun quirk while the reality of it is no fun at all. So I love that the writer is educationing readers about this.
The book has a map in it. Don't we all love books with maps. I do!
This quote also got to me 💔 "Men don't show sadness, men don't show emotions." It is a sad reality that a lot of people think like this.
Callum is part of the Ravenor crime family. But he doesn't feel like he belongs. He feels not worthy, not loved and not a part of his family. His parents see him as weak and he wouldn't want anything more than to make his family proud and be enough for them as he is. To be loved unconditionally. Will he get his family'd approval?
Callum has a stalker. At first he is followed by a raven with purple eyes. But is his stalker a bird? Or is it something (or someone) else? The raven turns out to be a woman. Our FMC. Who is she? And what does she want from Callum?
▪︎ Stalker ▪︎ Praise kink ▪︎ Heartbreak ▪︎ Virgin
In the meanwhile Clemma is trying to get rid of all the gods. Will she succeed? What does she even have against them?
I supspect that book 3 is going to be about Kieran & Maris, because Maris lives at a temple an the title is Sins of the Gods. Can't wait to continue this series.
I don’t even know how to explain how much this book gutted me. Shay- you ripped my heart out, stitched it back together, and made me believe in fated love all over again, just like I knew you would. Callum’s story isn’t just dark — it’s human. His trauma, his OCD, his desperate need to prove himself. It was painful and beautiful watching him unravel and rebuild. And Lanie? She’s the kind of fmc who feels like both the baddie goddess she is and a safe place at the same time. Their connection was pure magic, and when they let themselves love each other? Ugh my heart. This book has so many jaw-dropping moments, but the quiet ones are the ones that destroyed me. Little lines that will not leave my head, like: “It felt like… like I had spent my whole life searching for something I didn’t even know I was missing. And there you were.” “You have my full surrender — my fractured mind that finally knows peace in your presence.” “My life would have never been worth anything if it weren’t for her… With her, I could finally breathe.” This isn’t just romance. It’s healing, it’s vengeance, it’s devotion. It’s two broken people finding home in each other. And now? I’m literally bursting with excitement for the next books. Shay gave us the tiniest glimpses of the other siblings’ fated mates and I can’t wait to dive into their stories. The setup promises just as much heartbreak, magic, and intensity. When I hit the last page, I didn’t feel like I’d finished a book, I felt like I’d lived the story, and with each one we learn more about the world Shay has created. If you’re ready for a story that will leave claw marks on your heart but also make you believe in soulmates again, pick this up immediately.
Like always Shay I couldn’t put it down and finished it in a day-😂
**Disclaimer: I received this book as an ARC. Thank you, again, to Shay Taylor for choosing me to ARC read. I believe this is my fourth time ARC reading for her and I absolutely love her story telling abilities. I am so honored. I did take a brief break after starting this book to read a couple of books I had on preorder.
4.5 stars overall. I think the only reason I am taking off that half star is due to the fact that the miscommunication trope makes me so angry. I understood the thought process and how the story was going with the miscommunication, and it was well done. But there were definitely times when I was frustrated with how the two of them communicated and all of the eavesdropping that was making everything worse.
Now that that is out of the way, I actually loved this story. Shay Taylor has done a great job with world building, world expansion and establishing a magic system that isn't too complicated to understand. This series is interconnected with the Secrets & Curses series and I actually love already having an understanding of the world going into this series. This is book two of the Fourth Born series, following Callum and Delayna. Callum was a fun side character in the first book of this series and I was very excited to see him get his own story. Callum's character development and the development with his family is heart warming and slightly gut wrenching at times.
Considering that the book has not been released yet, I don't want to list anything even close to a spoiler. This is a great continuation of the whole Shay Taylor universe and I look forward to the next book.
I will say that this book can be read as a standalone, but I would recommend at least starting from the first book in the Fourth Born series just so you have an understanding of the world. If you want the full picture, start with Secrets & Curses of Exile.
Shay Taylor has struck again! I really don't know how she does it. Her entire line of books has been an honor to read. Nightmares of the Gods (NOTG)is the 2nd book in the Fourth-Born series. The Fourth-Born series stems from the Secrets and Curses series (her first set of 5 books). NOTG is about Callum and his stalker, a sassy black haired woman. Callum was introduced in previous books.
If you had asked me before reading this book, if Callum was a worthy character, I would have said blah, but now.....mmmmmm. You follow Callum throughout the book and learn how he became who he is now. You get to see a softer side to him. You will also get to see other fan favorites from the previous books (hunky, dark, Mr. God of Death himself...cough cough). As always, Taylor drops those mind-blowing bombs here and there, like sprinkled landmines. Just when you think you know something about a character, BAM she switches it up on you.
There are several TW in this book, so please use caution before opening it. If you like fansty, suspense, multiverse, SMUT 🥵, brut-like men who are obsessed with sassy, smart mouth, take no sh*t women THEN definitely read any of Shay Taylor's books.
*I have been an ARC reader for Shay since book 1 (Secrets and Cruses Series). I may be a little biased, but I have eaten up everything she has been willing to write. I truly recommend starting with book 1 and working your way through the entire series. I have laughed ,cried, screamed, and had my heart ripped out at 2am throughout these books.
If you would rather live the story than read it, this is the book for you. You’re thrown into the world right away and hit in the face with Callum’s life with his family. You will quickly understand him better than the first book he appeared in. What Callum feels and goes through is written so well through the entire book my heart ached and bled for him.
Not only that, Callum’s and Lanie’s love are beautifully portrayed as well. Their story made me believe in soulmates again. It also made me smile, giggle and cry. Sure, I was frustrated a fair number of times too, nothing is ever smooth. I love that the love, betrayal, lies and forgiveness was so chaotically perfect. While I’m talking about their story… The spice in this book is chef’s kiss! It was excellent from the beginning to the end. Every time they were intimate it was enchanting because of the different situations they originally were in.
The mind-blowing bombs that will make your jaw drop are placed with surgical precision. Shay has really put down a lot of work into that and it’s highly appreciated. The same goes for the OCD, trauma and anxiety representation in the book.
The book gives you just enough of the other fourth borns that it will have you craving them and their story too. It’s written so you just know it’s filled with as much heartbreak, passion and devotion.
The thing that had me smiling the most is Callum having a banter with a raven. That was just fantastic!
“maybe the heavens made me broken just so I’d know what it felt like to be whole the day I met you”
This book ripped my heart out and stitched it back together again 🥹
I loved Callum in book one, and I was soooo excited to read his story, and it did not disappoint. Callum’s story is so heartbreaking, he’s constantly trying to prove himself to his family in order to be accepted as “one of them”. All he has ever wanted was a family that loves and cares for him.He battles with ocd and also has a lot of trauma from his early childhood. He is fierce and loyal, and such a loveable character. Lanie, the FMC, is sweet and kind but also has a badass side to her. Her and Callum’s relationship from Lanie being Callum’s stalker to the very end, was just so magical to watch. The spice…..their chemistry was top teir 🙈 It was so nice to see both Morrigan and Khalias from book 2. Also Ares and Luther ? - need more on these two 🙈 Cannot wait for the next book in this series. Need it like now 🙈
Top quotes - ✨I’d burn this entire damn realm to ash before I let anyone touch a single hair on her head. ✨ “I never had a favorite color until,” I whispered. “I saw the purple your eyes turn when the moon hits them. Like they absorb the light and stir small silvery clouds inside. It’s like your eyes caught the night sky and decided to keep it—that is my favorite color." ✨ maybe the heavens made me broken just so I’d know what it felt like to be whole the day I met you.
This book broke me, healed me, and made me cry…Shay you’ve outdone yourself with this one. 🥹
Being an ARC reader for the first book in this series was already such a privilege, but getting the chance to ARC read book two? ABSOLUTELY AMAZING. I’d been in such a reading slump, and it’s honestly like Shay knew I needed this story to pull me out of it. From start to finish I was hooked, and the emotions hit me harder than I expected.
Callum and Lanie… wow. Their love was raw, messy, beautiful, and so real. The way they fight for each other, break for each other, and heal together left me breathless. I laughed, I cried, and at one point I had to just stop and soak it all in because their story touched me that deeply.
The pacing, the world-building, the emotional punch...everything was stronger in this second book. Shay, you balanced the heartbreak and hope so perfectly that I couldn’t stop reading, even when I wanted to slow down and savor every word.
If book one hooked me, book two reminded me why I LOVE ❤️🥰 reading in the first place.
And then, being blessed with a sneak peek chapter for book three?!! 😭 I can’t even begin to explain how excited I am. Book two shattered me in the best possible way, I can only imagine what book three has in store.
If you’re looking for a series that grabs you by the heart, doesn’t let go, and reminds you why you love reading...THIS IS IT‼️‼️
Shay Taylor, thank you for giving us Callum and Lanie. Callum and Lanie’s story is one I’ll be carrying with me for a long, long time. 💜
Man, Shay hit another one out of the park! The only reason I gave this 4.5 instead of 5 stars is because I felt like some parts and character instances were lacking something.
Callum you poor mentally broken man! I loved the banter he had with Lanie in her raven form before he learned who she was lol. Nothing like arguing with a bird to really humble someone 😂 This may sound weird BUT I actually kinda enjoyed that Shay made his mother the awful parent. I mean, his dad was awful in different ways but it seemed like he never really wanted to hate his children. There are terrible mothers just as much as there are terrible fathers. Out of all the books of Shay's I've read, Callum is probably tied with Cassius as my fav MMC. He was so real and vulnerable and just had a different fight from all the other MMCs that I really enjoyed.
Lanie was so damn cute! Stalking him the way she did and actually liking being called that as a pet name 😂. I felt like the heartbreak she felt was well written, I felt like my heart was being ripped open along with her! I really enjoyed that she didn't try to hide her feelings and emotions for Callum or anyone. She shared how she felt freely and openly.
I was not as surprised to see Clemma back especially after the way Artemis reacted to seeing her before he died in Shadows of the Gods. I did think it was slightly unfair that she knew what he was like and every other sibling is literally obsessed with their mates. I know he was THE bad guy but still lol.
I'm excited for the next two books to come out! Oh also...I really hope we see more from Luther and Ares because I was SO disappointed that nothing but hurt came from that at the end of this book...
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
If you're looking for something different in the romantasy aisle where the MMC is the one who's broken, vulnerable, and navigating life with OCD — but still completely swoon-worthy — then you’ve found the right book. Shay sensitively portrays OCD and layers it into Callum’s personality, daily struggles, and especially his interactions with the Lanie. Watching him fall in love while fighting his own mind? Hauntingly beautiful.
And can we talk about the role reversal? Callum isn’t your typical alpha. He’s the one who needs rescuing, but he also shows up in some truly breathtaking ways. That push-pull of fragility and fierceness is absolute perfection. It’s rare to see this done well.
In Chapter 13 there’s a sudden layer of world-building that hints at a much broader narrative arc. You’ll feel it — that click where you realize this isn’t just a standalone, it’s the beginning of a new series!
Shay has done it again! 1. There’s yet another scene where a male character drags a woman in her chair! I hope she keeps sprinkling in this little moment because I love the desperation of the male needing the female close by any means possible. 2. There are many, many, many quotes that can be turned into perfect wedding vows – something that I always look forward to in Shay Taylor’s books.
Shay Taylor has once again crafted a story that’s romantic, raw, and unexpectedly real. It hits hard in the feels, and it lingers. You’ll walk away with new standards for fictional men and maybe a few favorite quotes you’ll want read aloud at your wedding.
I swear, whatever Shay serves up, we’re all lined up to feast. Honestly, I went into this book skeptical. I wasn’t the biggest fan of Callum in the first book, so I thought, "Hmm, not sure I'm going to love this one." But Shay works her magic again, she takes you deep into Callum’s story, peeling back his layers, showing the pain, the trauma, the OCD that shapes him. By the end, you can’t help but feel for him.
And let’s talk about the SMUT. Next-level. Completely addictive. This book had me hooked, flipping pages like my life depended on it.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: Shay is one of the very few authors who can truly shock me. Her twists, her emotional gut punches, the way she tears your heart apart and somehow pieces it back together, it’s phenomenal. Not always in the way you expect or want, but in the way the story demands.
There’s nothing to fault here. But then, I’ve been an ARC reader since the very beginning, so yes I’m a little biased, and fiercely protective of her work. Still, I know I’m not the only one who believes Shay’s books are criminally underrated. They deserve so much more hype than they get, and this latest release proves exactly why.
This review comes a little late but thank you so much for another ARC!
I liked the first book which is why I requested this ARC, but I liked this one even more! It pulled me in right away and kept my attention throughout. I could relate to the impulses Callum had with his OCD and I though it was represented really well. I enjoyed the one person POV because it kept some mystery alive, even though we knew what was going to happen
The relationship between the MCs was so magnetic and you could feel the tension and yerning. I thought they were perfect for each other which makes sense since they kinda were made for each other. The only thing that bothered me was the miscommunication.. it’s not something I particurlarly enjoy and it’s very frustrating. While I do understand the reasons and the importance to the storyline, I wish they would just communicate.. however, I was happy to see they came clean about everything
I loved to see the redemption arcs to some characters and some unexpected relationships👀 hoping we get to see these develop in the next book
I also thought the spice was written really well and I loved that we got to see a glimpse of the future mates so obviously can’t wait to see it unfold!
My rating is actually 4.75 stars but Goodreads doesn't allow for partial stars.
So this is book 2 in the fourth Bourne series and we meet Callum who is a half incubus half Demon and feeds on the fear of others through their nightmares. We first met Callum in book one where he quickly became a friend of Morgan, and like Morgan, he has had a very difficult life as an unwanted fourth born. Abused by his family to the point where he truly believes his mind is broken, he tries everything to win his family’s approval, even going so far as to try to destroy the gods who outlaw and massacre all fourth born. Then he meets the goddess of nightmares and something in him changes.
OMG, what a fantastic book. I absolutely love Shays other books and I’m glad to say that this book did not disappoint. I love the plot line, the writing style, the character development, the world building, basically everything about it. And I love how Shay has weave a wider plot through this series that links to her previous secrets and curses series and hopefully what will be her next series.
I cannot recommend this book enough along with Shay’s other books. This was a 4.75 star read for me and I would highly recommend.
Shay struck again with the second book of the series!! Lanie is soooo precious & her love for Callum, and vice versa is just *chef’s kiss*!!
I will say that Shadows of the Gods definitely my favorite out of the two, cause first book was 6 stars for me and really got me in my feels. But this book is reaaaally good too. I love moments where when Callum’s heart is breaking and I can feel my heart crunching and crushing too. It hurt soooo goooood.
It took me a minute to remember who Clemma was, I’m not gonna lie lol. It wasn’t until when we find out that she can dole out justice and destruction where I’m like ohhhhhhhhhhhhh.
And omg? Ares and Luther??? Are we gonna get this resolved soon?????? And Callum’s brothers and father, you really dislike them until towards the end. Liam and Lucas kind of fell out the story after Callum went to God’s Peak but I’m glad they didn’t retain their asshole-ry behavior lol. And fuuuuuuuck Helena.
Looking forward to the next book, which is gonna be about Kieran and Maris!!!

A compelling dark Romantasy in the second of the Fourth Born series.
Callum is not your typical MMC. His tough upbringing with his 3 brothers, full of a loveless family life from his tough a** parents, along with his series mental health issues makes up Callum’s complex character. He is brooding, he is dark, but once he makes his mind up about you he will fight for you to the very end.
Lanie has spent most of her life searching for her HEA, especially since watching Death & Morrigan find each other. She is OBSESSED with him. I love her ‘Stalker’ nickname, it really sets the tone of the book where it’s something she cherishes.
I loved the interactions between them both. It’s refreshing to read a MMC with a few flaws which aren’t very often written about. The chemistry between them once it gets going is seriously hawt 🥵
“I promise. I vow to you and to the gods, I’m never leaving you. You’re mine now… and I don’t let go of what’s mine.”
I was lucky enough to receive an ARC copy of this book thanks so much to Shay!
I was lucky to be selected as an arc reader for this book. That being said im not sure if I will ever love a couple as much as grim and death in the first book but I have high hopes for the following book in this series because I just love the vibes and story line already adding up.
so back to this book! the mmc struggles with real-life issues. OCD, anxiety, overwhelming feelings, and such. This led to an interesting read for me and a unique love story. Mfc seems to react in dramatic ways and gave me more of that young obsessed love stricken girl vibes at time. This relationship was unique, and I dont want to spoil too much, but there were times I loved them, hated them, and then loved them again. Just read it!
The storyline has me intrigued! The continuation and the setting up for the next books is just great. Kept me very interested, and I have high hopes for the next one due to the plot of the book. I love how the stories so far are just all intertwined and keep creating a fated love story across the characters.
If you like dark romantsy with spice. These books are for you!
First, and most importantly, what’s up with Ares and Luther? I am very interested in finding out and might need a novella. Haha!
I loved this book. It picked up where the first one left off but from a different perspective. Some situations are more intense than they need to be and I found I actually liked it. A lot more characters were involved and it really helped push the story. They were just a name in book 1.
If withholding information were a sport, these characters would win. I’m not sure how obvious things were never mentioned. Example: MMC and book 1 FMC are close and everyone knows it. She is active in book 2 FMC’s life. So how is book 1 FMC never brought up? I know it adds to miscommunication spiral, but it feels too obvious to leave out. The skepticism from the characters was very repetitive.
Callum: he has the same qualities from book 1 but to the extremes. It was confusing how he could be crippled in one situation and confident in the next. Despite that, his trauma and mental instability matched so I was able to feel sympathy for him.
Another fantastic book in the series. I loved getting to learn more about our MMC Callum after meeting him in the first book. Especially with an introduction of where we want to hate him and realise all may not be as it seems.
I could really feel Callum's struggle to try to hide who he really is because his family don't approve of his 'quirks' and he desperately wants to belong. I love how well these strong main characters are shown with depths of everyday struggles like Callum's OCD.
Lanie was everything he deserves, even if he didn't believe he was worth her, the fact the she could see all of him and accept him and love all of him was exactly what made this story so strong.
The very real struggle of love vs family was such a strong plot. Can you really turn your back on one and hope it was the right choice.
I can't wait to see what other tails the other gods encounter as this series progresses and we've already been hit with teasers to some of the struggles they might face.
This book takes you to diverse realms filled with intricate magic systems and enchanting creatures. The love story between Callum and Lanie is authentic and beautifully messy. Their journey of fighting for one another and healing is incredibly moving. I experienced a rollercoaster of emotions, from laughter to tears, and at times I had to pause just to absorb the depth of their connection.
The author addresses sensitive topics like OCD and mental health through Callum's character, effectively illustrating that those living with mental illness are not defined by their struggles and can absolutely find happiness. In the second book of this series, the author’s world-building and emotional depth are even more compelling. The balance between heartbreak and hope is executed so well that I found it hard to put the book down, even when I wanted to take my time with the story.
Favorite quote: “Maybe the heavens made me broken just so I’d know what it felt like to be whole the day I met you.”
I wasn’t sure how Shay would top Shadows of the Gods but this book comes close.
I loved Morrigan (Grimm) and Khalias’ (Death) story but Callum and Lannie’s story is just as good!
This book is full of different realms, complex magic systems, and mythical beings.
The world building begins in Shadows of the Gods but continues to be explained and built on in Nightmares of the Gods. The characters are well developed, rich in character and depth and they are complex.
Shay touches on some issues with Callum that may trigger some ( OCD and his Mental Health) but I love how she used this to develop his character and show people living with any mental illness they are not broken and the deserve and can find happiness.
This book ends with Lanie and Callum getting their happily ever after but man it is left wide open for Maris and Kieran’s story. I’m also very curious about Luther and Aries!
Please, please read this book! You will not be disappointed!!!!
Overall Nightmares of the Gods is an amazing dark romantasy set in a world with Gods, Magic, Fated Mates, and intense struggles. It is the second in the fourth born series. They are standalones but I would recommend reading them in order. I did not and some references were confusing for me. Shay's world building is phenomenal. The dialogue, banter, powerful scenes and spice are *chefs kiss*! We start our journey with Callum returning home from a quest that starts in the first book. His family is horrible and treats him like sludge. He wants nothing more than to be accepted by them until he meets his stalker. The beautiful purple eyed Goddess of Nightmares. Their chemistry is immediate and watching them fall in love is magical. Unfortunately his family is power hungry and want to kill the Gods. Callum must choose between finally being accepted by his family and helping them using his insane powers or the Goddess he loves.

The Test of Family Ties These books have standalone couples but are best read in order since we meet our characters throughout the books. So, start with Shadows of the Gods first. Love the nuero-spricy representation in this book. A lot of steam, betrayal, and test of family loyaties.
Callum thinks he's broken, his mind isn't a safe place to be. The number four can send him into a spiral where it's hard to make it's way out of. Even know, he feels paranoid, like someone is watching him, and maybe they are. He's decided to reclaim the magic the gods took from his family, and prove himself to them. Only, a raven keeps following him, with purple eyes. And a woman appears, watching him, even in his nightmares. As he works to help his family and prove his worth, he feels drawn to her in ways he can't explain.
This series gives a Whole new meaning to “f*ck the gods” I was luckily selected as an arc reader for nightmare of the gods and lemme just say that I am eating these books up and now can’t wait for sins of the gods!
Callums internal battles just hit home so hard. From the OCD to the depression it’s just calls to all deep dark parts of me! And it’s nice to read a dark romantsy from a male pov. This was a first for me and I gotta say I’m actually really loving it. Especially a switch 🫣😜 everything about this book is amazing and I wish I could say more but I can’t without spoilers!
Shay taylor does an absolutely amazing job with the interconnected standalones where you get the info from the previous book without it being overly repeated or beating a dead horse about past events. Everything flows so smoothly and her writing style is so immersive!
This is my second time being an ARC reader for Shay Taylor, and once again, I was completely blown away. If I could go back and reread these books for the very first time, I absolutely would.
The story pulled me in right from the start. It’s fast-paced, yet balanced with a delicious slow burn between the characters that kept me hooked. I especially loved how this book dives deeper into the backstory—it adds so much depth and perfectly sets up what’s to come in the series.
One of my favorite aspects was that the entire story is told from a male POV. That’s not something I often see in this genre, but it was refreshing and brilliantly done. And for those wondering—the spice is definitely still there and it does not disappoint. 💯
I can’t wait to get my hands on the next book. Shay Taylor has truly outdone herself again!
This is the 2nd in the Fourth Born Series, and we have our MMC Callum, who we met in the 1st book, and we find out he is an incubus and our FFC Lanie a badass Goddess and Callum's "Stalker". You follow Callum and all the anxiety, OCD and depression that he goes through. The misunderstanding that stems the betrayal, the lies but all of it with the core of love, forgiveness and acceptance. The spice in this book is top tier. With each book with get just a peek into the other MMCs and FFCs that we will encounter throughout the series. I truly can't wait to see how the story continues to unfold with each fourth born and their mates
This is the 7th book I have read from Shay and I have to say she does not disappoint. I will forever read and recommend her books!
Let me start out by saying, I would’ve completed this book within a day or two if it weren’t for having to adult a lot in the last two weeks.
Also I know these books can be read as stand alones, but to really capture the story you should start with Shadows of the Gods. It really brings to light the characters stories as the progress in the book.
This book is a must read, with a Callum as a strong MMC. He really shows his loyalty throughout the book. Callum shows how to really step out of your comfort zone to be able to make things right. With a strong FMC Lanie believing in him even when he was “broken.”
Amazing book and an amazing ending, but yet I feel like I could continue to read their story over and over again. It is beautifully written and I can’t wait to see what’s in store for us next.
