A really good issue. Watching Wonder Woman in action was really badass. I also love the character work on her. Both a warrior, but one who cares deeply about people. Great art, great character moments, make a great issue of her trying to save humanity from a threat.
Diana is fighting a monster called the Tetracide. It’s nasty and is going to devour the Earth’s population. So Diana plans to attempt a radical bit of magic to save everyone.
Great deeper dive into the backstory and more lore about Diana. The action is limited but still great to see and the art designs are amazing as always.
The more I read this series the more I fall in love with this version of Diana. She’s so cool! What she’s willing to do for others, what she’s willing to not compromise on is really inspiring. She shows that being a warrior doesn’t mean you need to forsake caring deeply for others.
This issue we learn how Steve Trevor returned to the land of the living, and the new threat that has even Diana feeling a tinge of doubt and despair.
I really enjoyed Dianas perspective on her sacrifice and her conversation with Circe. This is one of the best absolute runs imo. Its kinda weird to see WW with blades though.
This is one of those comic book issue that just blow me away. From the art, to the story, to the characters, to the action, the love, the sacrifice, to everything. Wonder Woman is an amazing symbol of hope no matter the circumstances and this issue exemplifies that to the point of me tearing up, so well done. Oh also, one thing I want to point out I find interesting is the use of Diana’s eyes. A lot of times in the present day she is walking around with red glaring powerful eyes. But when we cut back to the past we see bright blue innocent and compassionate eyes, they also sometimes come back in the modern day where there are moments of intense focus of compassion. I just found that really interesting and impactful at certain moments.
But this issue actually shifts are focus to a different character, one we haven’t yet met in this world. As we look in on the gateway city natural history museum, they are watching with everyone else as the events unfold on their beach as they watch Diana fly up to the monster. But one person watches with pure amazement: Barbara Minerva! And she seems to recognize Wonder Woman!
As Barbara runs off in a hurry, we cut back to the boardwalk as Diana is regrouping with the military. She went up to the tetracide to perform a spell that may slow it down, but her mother would have been more effective, and of course she continues to reinforce that they must all leave immediately but it’s important they hear her worlds on how it kills so they can fight against it after it has killed her. It’s terrifying how serious Diana is in this moment. She goes on to explain that tetracide means the four killer. It kills through death of fear, mind, body, and soul. Fear of death is the worst and the biggest concern in a heavily populated area. It is called death of fear because it emits a sound that relieves you of fear and compels you to be drawn to it, to even run into the jaws of the tetracide where one dies in agony—“a fear of mind, body, and soul.”
Now that they have this info she again asks that they leave and evacuate the entire city. She then proceeds to order Pegasus to keep its distance and attack with hellfire if it can, there is a low chance Zeus will allow it to be resurrected again. Diana flies up to the tetracide and offers it the same thing she gave to prime harbinger. Leave now and never return or die painfully as her hand. The monster bellows out a loud shriek and seals its fate. And this is where we get one of the first insane moments that made me go WOW. As in an instant Diana marks her target with her intense blue eyes and throws her sword Dee into the tetracide with her lasso tied to the end. Then in an instant, calling on Nike, she wraps the entire creature with her lasso! But this trick will now work for long, as the tetracide’s tentacles are able to pull the sword out and let it fall into the water bringing the lasso with it. From her magical pouch Diana pulls out a large double headed axe and begins to get in close to cut the tendrils…but through her slashing her right arm is seized by the creature!
One awesome double spread title card later and we cut back to the past in Hell, as we witness Steve using a similar blade to help Diana deal with a hydra that really wants Steve. She tries to give it the same deal even then, to leave and live in peace. Steve questions if it could understand her, and she honestly isn’t sure. Most creatures can, but even if it can’t, it certainly understands strength. Steve talks about how amazed he is with everything, how Circe and Diana have been able to create their own paradise. Diana’s explanation is that love is transformative, and Steve admits that his home could use a lot more of that. Love…not baby hydras of course, lol. Diana then asks if he misses his home, and he admits he does. He misses the coast of gateway city and the way the light hits the pacific at sunset. For some reason it reminds him of his mother’s laugh.
Back in their home Diana slams a book shut with a look of revelation in her face. She sends Steve out to gain firewood as she secretly talks to Circe. She had found a way to send Steve home through a spell, but Circe warns her it is not the way, the spell she speaks of requires a great sacrifice. Later that night Circe is woken up and she sees Diana hunched over near the fireplace. Diana admits she could not stop thinking about what she is meant to be. If she is a great warrior, and will be a savior for humanity, then she cannot fail her first mission…to return one of their great heroes. “One good man is all it takes to save the world.” Steve wasn’t a gift…but a test. And if Circe is right and Diana is a great warrior…the. The dominant arm of a great warrior is a worthy sacrifice. Diana believes she has done what was necessary and she gave up her right arm to send Steve back to the living world. Can we please get the wow counter up to 2. Because this moment shocked and blew me away, the compassion, the love, the sacrifice, it’s all so powerful! Steve also woke up in a haze as it ventured outside to find Circe and Diana chanting around a green flame, before he can realize what is happening he begins to fade away…and is suddenly back on the beaches of gateway city!!
Now we cut back to gateway city, with Diana’s right arm in the clutches of the monsters as she speaks a spell to release and dissolve the magic arm that was in its place, freeing her from its grip. I want to reiterate how well drawn Diana is in this series, but especially seeing her walk back into the room with the military with her full battle gear while amputated is such a powerful image. As everyone is freaked out about her losing her arm, she admits that the arm she had was only a magic one her mother made when she lost her old one long ago, and it will be complicated to get it back. In its place she pulls out a magic mechanical arm from her magic sack and straps it in. Upon seeing this Steve immediately recognizes that this is how she got him back, and she claims it was more than worth it.
But back to the matter at hand (unintentional pun), everyone needs to move and evacuate much faster they don’t have time. Steve says he doesn’t want to leave her alone, and she explains that is exactly why he was with saving in the first place, but it would all be useless if he dies today. As Diana steps outside a new visitor accidentally runs directly into her…literally. Barbara Minerva runs around a corner and slams directly into Diana, prompting Diana to catch her. Diana tells her she shouldn’t be here and to go find a man named Steve Trevor inside and he will make sure she is safe, but as Diana is walking away Barbara yells…Wonder Woman! This sparks Diana’s curiosity. Barbara proceeds to explain that is what the amazons would call their champion, and proceeds to ask if that is what she is, an Amazon? Diana asks how she knows if the amazons, and Barbara says she wrote her dissertation on the myth of the amazons, it’s actually her primary field of study. Of course Diana is confused that they are referenced as myth, but they don’t have time a large screech from the monster prompts her to leave. But she promises she will speak more to her on this and gets her name before leaving. This prompts Barbara to cheer about making it in the book, which is kind of a funny meta on Barbara showing up in the comics but I’m also guessing she will be writing a book on everything happening and now that Diana has mentioned her by name she can include herself. Which rocks.
But that’s for a later day, for now Diana still has to face this monster and she doesn’t have many options. But there is one thing that may work, she just needs more range. To the shock of the news reporter and camera man still on the scene she runs over and grabs them for help. They then run up to a nearby roof where she begins a spell. She asks them not to record the actual spell as not everyone should be privy to that information, but once she is setup she broadcasts herself live to everyone. With her compassionate blue eyes she introduces herself as Diana, and explains that she needs everyone’s help to save the city. The monster is very powerful and even beyond her and the military will not be able to evacuate everyone before it gives of a sound that compels people to sacrifice themselves. But she has a solution, she will save everyone by making them temporarily deaf. Many probably do not believe her but they will soon become believers. The panic this will bring may be even more dangerous than the monster, so she needs everyone to be calm. Hell your friends and neighbors, kindness and compassion will be all that can save them. She came to save their city but it seems it will be up to all of them to save it instead. “Wonder Woman believes in you.” She then asks for the news crew to put her message on a loop rather than showing the monster, as her message is instructive and hopeful and the monster will only encourage fear and chaos. She then proceeds to utilize her spell and spread a green mist over all of gateway city. Hit that wow counter up to 3. Not for the ending moment where she spreads the spell over the city, but for the strength and compassion and hope she shows as Wonder Woman when addressing everyone. Such a beautiful moment and I can’t wait for the next issue.

I could never imagine having the compassion to give up my dominant arm for a stranger. Once again, Wonder Woman proves that she is the best of humanity.
Mmmm. The hatching. This book continues to look amazing.
I'm a LITTLE disappointed that this book is partially what I thought I wouldn't like (but was surprised by the avoidance of in #2): Diana fighting monsters with big blades. It's just not who I want Diana to be, and it's not who she was designed to be originally.
But there's enough going on here that's valuable (and I think it's possible that violent aspect of Diana is being framed very deliberately) that I can more-or-less tolerate the cutting-up-monsters element. Even if she's hacking away at monsters, Kelly Thompson seemingly understands the core ethos of the character and what makes her unique.
Because here's the thing: a big monster can represent a number of things. Both before and especially during Wonder Woman's wonderful direct appeal to the TV audience (which I hope people don't hate just because it resembles Wonder Woman 1984, which I'm an apologist for), I felt like this monster resonated as a political metaphor.
I'm very probably going to replace my phone's existing Wonder Woman lock screen with the panel of her appealing to the TV audience.
And my heart warmed an awful lot when Diana said "one is instructive and hopeful, and one will only encourage chaos and fear" when asking the TV guys to loop her message rather than show the monster. It feels very likely that Kelly Thompson is making an observation that I have felt deeply for a long time, and that makes me feel very connected to this book and optimistic about where it's going.
Because staring at the monster is not helpful. Listening to selfless people who know what they're talking about is. That's what this issue in particular is about.
Okay, now we’re cooking! I liked this one a lot more than #2. We have a pretty interesting gimmick for the Tetracide, the notion of four deaths- four ways- Death of fear, mind, body or soul. We have clearly defined characterization of Diana in her willingness for self-sacrifice. She sees herself as a champion for humanity. This is the source of her resilience and gutsiness, a sense of duty to defend. She would go so far as to sacrifice of her own body.
I had to flip back a few pages and look at her sleeved arm again, only for the story to suggest that the actual artificial arm is her exposed one. And then we get her utilizing magic to combat the beast. She is reminding me of Edward Elric from Fullmetal Alchemist in this issue… I assume some allusion was intentional?
Also pretty cool take on the ‘Wonder Woman’ title, in it being something Amazons would refer to their champions as. I’m liking things so far. Curious to see if next issue will be one with minimal to no dialogue, an action piece in the spirit of Samurai Jack. That would totally suit the vibe.

Diana continues to prove that she's amazing no matter what reality she's in. I love this Absolute title. She is Diana through and through but she's different, too. The close ups of her eyes are amazing. The blood lust of a warrior lives there and is a reminder that Wonder Woman doesn't subscribe to Batman's One Rule. (That doesn't come out in this issue, but she's just so badass that I couldn't help thinking about it.)
The monster is a bit Lovecraftian, which is cool, too. I love that we can see Diana so many different ways and still be with her true to her heart and core - whether she's fighting with dead vikings, ruling as a heavy metal queen, or fighting a losing battle with one arm.
Also love Barbara's appearance. Looking forward to seeing more of her.
I went through this issue way too quickly because it was such a fun read and continues to be a great ride. I am really enjoying how these issues directly continue the story rather than jumping ahead with time passing between chapters. The story remains incredibly engaging, and seeing Diana begin her fight against the Tetracide while also accepting the name of Wonder Woman does a great job of building the narrative. I am loving this series so far, and it has quickly become a standout title for DC. The art is also absolutely blowing me away. Hayden Sherman’s work is fantastic, and I especially loved his use of Greek pottery–inspired visuals to help explain the Tetracide. This entire series is strong, fun, and highly recommended. Grade: A
Am I missing something? I like the series so far but I’m hung up still on how Steve ended up in hell. I feel like we’re copying the movie…Did Steve accidentally find hell and crash land?!? No explanation whatsoever and he is in a pilots uniform.
I get it if he died but why is he the only person to wash up on hells shore?!? Sorry but that’s a huge plot hole I can’t look past. I spent half of issue #2 and 3 waiting for an answer. Also he’s literally just stood around the entire time he’s been with Diana. She says he was worthy of saving but my boy has done nothing to justify sacrificing an arm.
Out of all three Absolute titles this is by far the weakest.

Such a good issue. While this issue gets really dark (like most of the Absolute line so far), Kelly Thompson manages to keep true to Wonder Woman's character. Her undying compassion for all living things, and her unwavering willingness to sacrifice whatever to protect humanity. Her cutting off her own arm was so shocking, but fit beautifully with her character. This issue also marks the first appearance of Barbara Minerva in this universe, and I really love her and Diana's dynamic from the brief interaction they had. This is shaping up to be my favorite book out of the Absolute line.
Another banger, would recommend it. i think the way diana talks about magic and fear can transform people into something that less resembles people and individuals and instead something more destructive. I think also the way diana helps but doesn’t fully conform to the corrosive system is mirrored with how the general speaks and demands from her. His fear and anxiety of not having something under his control but being dependent on her to help, is a great mirror for the story to take place. Also, i love the characterization of her in this story.
the way diana talks about the tetracide is the way people were talking about the momo challenge back in 2019 😭
oh my freaking gosh this was SO GOOD!!! i loved the greek pottery at beginning to give the tetracide lore i thought that was awesome. diana cutting off her own arm HELLO?????? UGH she is so COOL!!!!!!! i wish i was that self sacrificial she is inspiring me to be altruistic i love you wonder woman yes i do!!!! beautiful art once again what more can i say. also the sound of silence??? simon & garfunkel,?? 🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔
The Berserk influence should be obvious. That massive sword is a dead ringer for Dragon Slayer, the giant blade Miura's black swordsman wields. However, there is another connection to Guts as this issue revealed.
How? Why? I usually think WW is boring. This? This isn't. THIS IS AMAZING! I love that Diana has a greek nose. Love that she's pratically a disney princess (talking with animals included!) Love thats she's a magician and a kickass warrior. Love that she's hardcore. There isn't anything to dislike! If Absolute Batman is amazing, with a new bat-family, and some well-thought development, this is simply epic fantasy in the modern world!
freaking amazing, the best ww has ever been. it feels like the world is healing. good art, good narrative absolutely awesome and hard rock character? seems like 90s but better since it isn't over sexualized. Tetracide is an amazing villain for the arc at least, straight out of a Lovecraft or Hellboy story. At the moment the only thing i don't like is this version of trevor since he's just a damsel in distress.
