A lost lover, murder, kidnapping and the dumbest crooks in town. Another day in the life of Hannah Tree.
Just weeks before Starr Follies' new show's opening night, Marky, a leading dancer, begins behaving erratically. Hannah discovers that the obnoxious Marky's fiancé, Alan, is missing.
Marky thinks there's foul play. Hannah doesn't. Until a ransom note arrives. Hannah still believes Alan is behind a scam to extort Marky so she sets a trap. Instead, the kidnappers kidnap her. They’re desperate small-timers hiding from a mobster whose daughter, Freba, they helped run away.
Now, Freba has vanished, and to save themselves they hire Hannah to track her down. But to do that Hannah must outwit two crime families, recover a stolen masterpiece, and somehow survive long enough to get paid. With a gang war brewing around her, Hannah is about to find out just how hard this can be.
Hannah is the assistant stage manager for the Starr Follies, a drag team who put on excellent nightly shows and pull in a lot of crowds, but the leading dancer Marky is not at his best for some reason, and Hannah finds out that his boyfriend has been kidnapped and they want a ranson paid for Marky to get him back. Now Marky may have come from a wealthy family but they aren't too happy with his life style so money isn't forthcoming for him, hence the reason why he works. Marky asks Hannah to find his boyfriend, whose name escapes me (it's a few weeks ago when I read this) but Hannah doesn't think this is a real kidnapping rather than someone trying to use him to extract a very large amount of money for his ransom.
This also involves a woman asking Hannah to find her daughter whom she believes is living on the street and has joined some cult. What is it with cults? This must be the third cult book I've read almost in a row. No matter, Hannah does discover it is more serious than she thought and she does find the errant young girl installed inside a cult and Marky who goes undercover there almost loses his life, as does his boyfriend too. But they all survive and Hannah had a hard job of getting in the building and getting them all out. I really hope the next one I read doesn't mention cults, I feel a bit full of them right now I mean you don't read a cult book for years then three of them come along in a row, what is it cult year?!
