Kingdom of Gods #2

A Kingdom of Sand and Ice: Kingdom of Gods

Rate this book
The curse is broken. The veil has thinned. And now, the gods return. Some wearing familiar faces, others cloaked in shadow and ruin. Not all have come to save. Some have come only to watch the world fall.

The witches have begun their revenge by taking the city of Spark. But they will not stop there. They intend to storm the capital, then the world. Fueled by blood and a century of betrayal, they march beneath a banner of ash and fire, determined to burn the kingdoms to their knees.

Wren Wynter runs from prophecy and towards it, warning those who will listen that the end is closer than they know. But fate has a cruel way of twisting the paths of even its most faithful messengers.

Alina Acheron journeys deep into the heart of the desert, where war is not waged with armies but with memory, flame, and will. There, she will learn what it means to rise. Not as a princess, but as a weapon.

Mal Blackburn walks the line between life and death, love and betrayal, desperately searching for the truth buried in her husband's lies. But in the land of the dead, truth is a dangerous thing and not everything that dies stays buried.

As kingdoms crumble and old powers awaken, Kage must survive a grief that wants to consume him whole. And Kai, Kai must learn that monsters do not always wear the faces he expects, and that sometimes, purple eyes are just that… eyes.

The hands that weave fate are moving once more.
And this time, not even the gods are safe.

This story just keeps getting better!! J.F. Johns is now one of my favorite authors. The writing is beautiful, the plot has so many layers, and the emotions it brings out of me is what keeps me coming back.

I loved the multiple plot lines going on during this book. I enjoyed seeing everyone’s journey and how some of them intertwine together. The relationships in this book were beautiful. I need to know more about Wren and now I have my eyes on Alina. I can’t wait for book three, I have a feeling it’s going to be another whirlwind of magnificent chaos.

Favorite quote: “Some loves don’t ask for words. They speak in silence, and that’s enough.”

4.5 ⭐️

This sequel had me fully gripped from the first page. It’s dark, emotionally layered, and filled with a constant sense of tension and unpredictability that kept me completely hooked. I loved how the fallout from the first book continues to ripple through the characters and kingdoms, making everything feel raw and real.

The pacing is on the slower side, but it allows for deeper worldbuilding and character exploration. While I did find myself questioning where the story was ultimately heading, I appreciated the emotional groundwork being laid and how it heightened the stakes.

The shifting dynamics between characters were a real highlight, especially as new faces are introduced and old relationships evolve in unexpected ways. There’s an ever-present sense of unrest that makes this world feel alive, dangerous, and impossible to look away from.

The emotional depth, political intrigue, and constant twists made this a standout read. While I still have questions and theories I’m desperate to see play out, I’m absolutely invested in this series and eager for what’s to come.

Genre: Romantic Fantasy
⭐️ 4/5
🌶 2/5
🧠 7/10
Cliffhanger: 5/10
Noteworthy: Book 2 of an incomplete series. Multi 3rd person limited POV. Content warnings provided. Available on KU.

If you ever needed a Game of Thrones style Romantic Fantasy, look no further. When you start this series, be prepared to feel all available feelings in your little human heart. I love/hate this series so much. I can only take so much torment man! My favorite character is being done so dirty. That's not a spoiler because it could literally be any character. Don't get attached to any. 😭

This book continues where we left off in book 1 but takes a different approach by sending groups and pairs on various paths guided by fate, evil gods, and a tricky seer. For this reason, I would classify this as a setup book. It's like a temporary journey to our final destination and feels a little slow going in spots. The short chapters and POV changes help though. It's filled with growth, hard lessons and pain. You can't reforge something without breaking it down first. I suppose that includes the reader in this instance.

I'm honestly not sure if I'm looking forward to book 3 or not. I feel like a wounded animal who needs hide in a corner for a while and lick her wounds. Plus I just know my favs are about to go through it even more. 😭

To say that I was impatient to read this book is an understatement. I loooooved A Kingdom of Shadow and Ash and I couldn't wait to reunite with the characters. First off, I loved how we got a lot of different POVs and stories in book 2. We meet a lot of new characters and of course, we get very attached to them. I loved following every single one of them on their quest and get to know them. The multiple POVs was very well done. Although, I felt like the pacing was a bit slow and I was getting a tiiiiiiny bit impatient to have all of those stories merge at some point.

The way the old (and new) relationships evolve in this book had me stuck in an emotional rollercoaster. Everything evolves in unexpected ways and I still don't know if I am mad? or happy? about it 😭😂 I got very attached to some characters in book 1 (looking at you Alina and Kai) and very invested in some relationships, just to learn that nothing is truly safe in this world and anything can happen!

It was both fun and emotional to witness Alina's character growth. I liked her in book 1 and liked her even more in book 2. She is getting stronger, fearless, and vengeful, and I can't wait to see her in book 3. I also enjoyed Mal's story a lot. How we get to learn a bit more from her family and who she is. Loved all the scenes in the Underworld, felt very unique and dark. But I have to say that Wren is probably my favorite character after book 2. She stole my heart with her kindness, her strength, her loyalty, and her vulnerabilty.

Honestly love the political world, the characters and all their stories. I am very excited and impatient for A Kingdom of Light and Air! Thank you so much J.F. Johns for the ARC 🩷

J. F. Johns kicks in the door for this part two with a captivating prologue from the viewpoint of one of the antagonists. I immediately wondered if we would learn more about Hagan (and we did!)

I loved learning more on Mal's lineage in this second book. I'm really curious to what the next part will bring for her and learn what she can really do.

I also felt like there was more attention for the deities in this one, whereas in the first book it's more subtle. These were my thoughts in the beginning, and the choice made more sense as the book progressed. I am now curious how the gods will be woven in between the characters.

I also have to say that this book gave me major Game of Thrones vibes. From the the Kingdom of Sand being reminiscent of Dorne and the fierce warriors that reside there to how nothing in this story is sacred and this book WILL destroy you.

I also have to admit I wasn't an Alina lover in book one, and this trend just went on in the beginning of this book two. But, damn, did I warm up to her. She went from one of my least favourite POVs to read to one of my favourite ones and that's what I'm here for. I love me some good character development.

I was so devastated reading this book (in a good way). All the meaningful relationships are ash. Nobody is safe. Nothing is sacred. This second book is breaking down everything that started in book one in a good, but sad way. Does it come with more questions than I had when I started it? Hell yes, but that's also a good reason to keep reading. I crave the next book already.

Of course I can't end this review without thanking J. F. Johns herself for the opportunity to beta read this second book for her. I can't wait to read more of your writing!

ARC REVIEW

This is not going as I expected too. This series is so unpredictable and dark and sad. I love when characters are split up and you’re just waiting the entire time for them to be together again. This book has so many POVs the 3rd person storytelling is really convincing me, it’s a great way to be in the head of each and everyone of the characters.
It set up the third book very nicely there’s a lot of things I want to know about several characters.

I AM HEARTBROKEN AFTER THIS. RIPED TO PIECES. 😭 The way my jaw actually dropped to the floor several times while reading this. I do not know how I’ll recover.

I am so impressed by the amount of point of views, character arcs and development, twists and turns. That was such an emotional rollercoaster and there wasn’t a dull moment!! I love the amount of information that was revealed in this book, and there is still a whisper of mystery that leaves you absolutely crawling for more. Alsooo- 👀🌶️ ya girl was floored.

Alina has quickly become one of my favorite characters of the whole series. She is the epitome of strength and beauty. I absolutely love her character arc and how she finds herself after being shoved into a box for her whole life. She is on one of the biggest journey of self discovery that i’ve ever read about. It’s emotional, beautiful, and absolutely heartbreaking.

I loved how Mal and her siblings all have their own journeys in this book, also finding their direction in life and love. The entire book was entwined with suspense, intensity, twists and turns- and the ending brought about the biggest full circle moment that had me in awe and shock. EVERY character has an air of importance, a unique journey, and so much more depth than we even imagined coming out of book 1. It felt like tandem reading all of their stories at once and watching them converge and continue on in their respective directions in hope of following the right path to survival and victory. I was on the edge of my seat reading and bouncing from story to story absorbing it as fast as my brain would allow.

It was tragic, dark, emotional, mysterious, mesmerizing, and absolutely beautiful. I have already placed this series in my gods tier category- I am completely obsessed!! I quite literally cannot wait for book 3, and to continue on in this incredible world!!

I want to give a huge thank you to JF Johns for allowing me the opportunity to beta read this book. It truly feels so special to be a part of, I am so honored to have been able to enter into this world again before the first book even came out, and to have a hand in the process of this world being one step closer to being in everyone’s minds and hearts once more!! All I can say is, prepare for a gut-wrenching, crazy ride!!

Thank you to the author for allowing me to read this ARC in exchange for an honest review!

This sequel reminded me exactly why I fell in love with this series. The prose is as gorgeous as ever, lyrical, layered, and full of atmosphere.

The emotional peak for me was Alina and Hessa’s relationship, and her death truly hit hard. I was also hooked by the underworld threads with Hades, Thanatos, and Mal, which felt mythic and mysterious. There were moments that literally made me gasp, which is always the sign of a good read.

That said, this was definitely a “setup book.” The ending didn’t land like a proper cliffhanger, but it expanded the chessboard in a way that makes me eager for the next installment. I am most invested in seeing where Mal and Ash’s cursed path leads, what becomes of Kai and Dawn with their banter, and where Alina’s desert wandering will take her.

Overall, 4.5 stars that I am rounding up to 5, because even with its slower pacing, it kept me hooked, gutted, and already waiting for book three.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5 for Kingdom of Sand and Ice by J.F. Johns

“I'm not a dog.”
“You're right.” He yanked the sheets with a swift tug, sending her tumbling to the floor. “I respect dogs.”

^^I actually chuckled out loud at that part!

What a wonderful second book in this series. I originally discovered the first book on NetGalley and fell in love, so I was thrilled to have the chance to read this one early too (even if I’ve unfortunately been a bit behind on reviews this month).

I honestly wasn’t expecting the story to unfold the way it did at first, but I wasn't mad about how it unfolded. There are so many unexpected twists and turns along the way. This installment takes us on an unforgettable adventure with a wide variety of characters. After the events of the first book, everyone is scattered and unsure who’s alive and who’s not, each on their own journey but ultimately headed to the same place.

The witches and warlocks have taken over, and the one who claims to be in charge (I won't say who just in case you have not read the first book) is so awful that even his own side begins to doubt him. New love interests emerge, characters discover who they truly are, and we even meet some of the ancient Gods which as a very cool touch!

There ARE a lot of characters, which can sometimes be a challenge for me personally, but the transitions between storylines are smooth and easy to follow. And let’s just say J.F. Johns has absolutely NO PROBLEM AT ALL making you fall in love with a character only to rip your heart into a million tiny pieces.

Of course, it ends on a cliff-hanger and I cannot wait to see what happens in book three.
Highly recommended for romantasy readers who enjoy high-stakes adventures with a generous dose of heartbreak!

"I have waited an eternity for you. And now that you're here, close enough to touch if you'd let me, I must speak your name aloud, if only to remind myself this isn't some cruel dream."
.
.
The sequel that broke my heart. What an emotional roller-coaster. One minute I'm raging, the next I'm drowning in a puddle of my own tears. Loved getting to learn more about these characters- there was so much growth, and self discovery done. It was beautiful watching it all unfold.

The plot just keeps giving. Super unpredictable. When you think things are going one way, it goes a whole other direction, that leaves you staring into the abyss multiple times. Definitely had me on my toes. The new characters introduced have me super intrigued and excited to learn more about. The romance, the spice, the banter, all done so well. Had me so freakin' giddy. I need more of Arden and Thanatos, like yesterday please 🫠

I just can't wait to continue the series. I'm loving every second of it!

⭐️ Infinite stars for A Kingdom of Sand & Ice by J.F. Johns ⭐️

Disclaimer: I received this ARC in exchange for my honest opinion.

If you haven’t read A Kingdom of Shadow & Ash yet... what the hell are you waiting for?!?! Read it, grab a box of tissues (or two), then dive into A Kingdom of Sand & Ice and prepare to be emotionally destroyed. Again.

Johns doesn’t just write stories, she inflicts them on your soul. These characters feel so real, the world so vividly written, that it stops feeling like a book and starts feeling like a life you’re living alongside your best friends ... and your worst enemies.

Book #2 in the Kingdom of Gods series picks up right where the first one left off. It gives major Game of Thrones vibes with multiple POVs, sprawling storylines, and a sweeping world and just like with GOT, it somehow works seamlessly.

I loved every second of this book... and then it ended and left me wrecked in a storm of emotions and questions.

I have two complaints about this series:

It’s still being written so the wait for the next book is pure torture.

The book hangover? Yeah. It HURTS.

This. Book.

I don’t even know how to describe it. The way that book 2 gripped me even harder than book one? Holy cow.

It’s a long read. It took me a few weeks, I’ll admit. But the last 50% or so? Hooked. Absolutely hooked.

It’s hard to pick a favorite storyline. Book two splits off into different characters and the paths that they take. And the plot twists? The betrayals? The loves? Incredible.

A new Roman Empire for me. Not to mention the art for this series is just beautiful. I can’t wait to have all physicals on my shelf.

So incredibly well written. Beautiful and heartbreaking and inspiring and gut wrenching. I cannot say enough about this series so far, let alone this book. And CLIFFHANGER but I’ll be patient.

I was so excited for this book and I'm so happy to report it lived up to expectations! I adore Mal, she might be one of my all time favourite FMCs. Selfishly I wanted this book to focus on her more, but as I got invested with the POV changes and the developed stories of other characters, I realised that I actually adore pretty much everyone (apart from a certain faction that is.) The world building was immaculate, it was so indepth and detailed. The character arcs were beautifully written, and at no point did John hold back on the twists, betrayals and reveals. The further into the book I got, the more I connected and yearned for more. By the last 40% I could not put the book down at all. This is a wonderful sequel, that built on everything set out in book 1, but was mastered. I cannot wait for book 3!!!

This story keeps getting more amazing. I really enjoyed book two. The story line is a little slower paced during this book compared to book one. But I feel like we got a little more character development and world building. I love how we got more of a deep dive in a lot more characters in this book. Mal is still my favorite. She is on a wild ride trying to learn who she is and fight for the ones she loves. We got some old characters and some new ones. I really enjoyed learning about them all and seeing how everyone reacted to each other. You really know how to keep a reader on edge. The ending has my mind spiraling !!Can't wait for book 3!! This is a 3.5⭐️ read for me! I have such a love hate relationship with having so many characters because goodness it’s hard not to fall in love with each of their plot lines. Here I am getting more and more attached to each character and especially their love stories. There was a lot of loss that I truly just ACHED for each of them.
I have those I love and others I am IMPATIENTLY awaiting their demise. WITH HASTE! One man in particular, gods, witches and warlocks. I’m over all of em! I just need to know how their love stories end how we can save literally all the good guys we can!
The overall plot line has a huge grip on me that I just cannot wait to dive into the next book. I am normally not a third person girlie but I fell in love with the first book and it truly doesn’t bother me in this series.

I received an ARC of A Kingdom of Sand and Ice and holy cow it does not disappoint. There is so much more world building and more truths come to life. I loved that we saw more characters outside of Mal and Ash. This allows to see how everyone deals with the world burning down around them and what they do to try to warn the rest of the kingdoms.

This also allows us to see how they come to grasp with the fact of the world burning and why Hagan is how he is.

Well what can I say apart from incredible!

Wasn’t sure if A Kingdom of Sand & Ice could live up to how amazing A Kingdom of Shadow & Ash was but it really really did!

It had me giggling, shocked and crying - complete emotional rollercoaster.

Loved how many POV we had and how they all started coming together. The twists and turns were beautifully written & didn’t feel rushed.

Let me wanting a lot more! Not sure how I’m going to cope having to wait for the 3rd instalment! Too many unanswered questions…

Would highly recommend reading - 5 stars from me! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Nope nope nope

Why why why

Honestly can’t with some of the story beats towards the end.

Seems like every couple I cared about was just traumatically ripped apart meanwhile Mal is stuck with a version of dunes Kwisatz Haderach she found in the Aldi middle aisle.

I could almost take Alina’s loss on the chin but then my girl Wren has her memory wiped?!?!

If those two can find happy endings in book three then I will be happy and to hell with the rest.

Thank you so so much for the beta.

This book picks up right after Kingdom of Shadow & Ash, and the world is just wonderful.
I really enjoyed learning about the other kingdoms in more depth throughout this book—they’re all so different and interesting, and the underworld parts were super cool and creepy in the best way.
Mal’s story goes even deeper here. After everything with the curse in book one, this book is all about her figuring out who she really is. I couldn’t stop reading.
I thought the pacing was great, and I loved getting multiple points of view. Following all these awesome characters and watching how they grew throughout the story was just so fun and interesting.
The other female leads were amazing too. They’ve all been through so much and still found a way to rise up. Their strength really hit me and left me feeling inspired.Alina’s journey of figuring out her sexuality felt really real and sweet, and it was cool to see that kind of story included.
Overall, it was a total emotional rollercoaster and I loved every minute of it. If you liked the first book, you definitely need to read this one.
I would give this a solid 4.5⭐️
