Even though I liked this arc it went way too long.

The Memento arc finally comes to an end. It was slow-paced and a little confusing, if I’m being honest. I was more interested in the conflict of Damian’s multiple legacies than a villain who wants to kill him just to punish Bruce. I am glad that Damian is going to continue to pursue both Robin and his new interest in helping people in another way, the way his grandfather did. It aligns him a little more with and honors the role Alfred served in Bruce and his kids’ lives too, which isn’t really detailed here but seems like something Damian would care a lot about.

Yeah alright, I rock with this! Don’t get me wrong, still highly confusing! But when going through the perspectives of a few detectives trying to sift through the world of the spiritual and demonic, it’s going to come out as clear as a frosted pane glass window. But the epicenter of this entire fight centers around the Wayne murders, and memento recreating it with Bruce (ahem…Jack), Lautrec, and Damian as it represents the epicenter of wealth and corruption in Gotham. The point that park row turned into crime alley and the entire city fell with it. And as Damian helps to get the rest of the irregulars out of harms way, he immediately doubles back to go and help batman and Lautrec. But through the gravediggers poppy still effecting him he gets a warning, he must for back to save them but the killer is waiting for them as well.

Meanwhile batman is in a pretty terrible situation, as Lautrec and him are deep and tied up in the vestiges, as they are surrounded by tons of instances of his parents being killed in repeat. But this also provides and opportunity for batman and memento to talk, and for batman to finally unveil the mask and reveal that memento hasn’t been Blye but there old friend Daniels from the police force in London! It was him outside sacred heart during the fire as he was the one to arm the mob, this also got Bruce thinking about the mountains of evidence they apparently found in Blye’s apartment, something that he would of had easy access to plant! Lautrec said he quit the police force, but when batman looked him up he found that his family reported him missing. We all know that Daniels isn’t the first memento avatar, but he has been since that night in the power station when Bruce found Blye confronting memento. Apparently Blye got the drop on memento, and it set out to kill him for taking Bruce, because that is who is truly wanted as its next avatar. But once the dust settled, Daniels stayed behind in the plant to try and be the clever one and figure something out for a change…only for the memento demon took Daniels and that is when he drugged Blye with the gravedigger’s poppy until his mind was shreds and then he planted mountains of evidence on him.

Still even after all of that, Daniels’ defense is that he did it because memento forced him to, but how many people has he killed and how many cities has he been to since then? But it’s clear that Daniels has fully joined with memento, as he places the mask back on he talks of humans as animals who eat their young and bash each other for shiny stones, and that there torment is his sole desire. And once Damian gets here then his game will be won. As Damian gets closer the entire world appears different because of the gravedigger’s poppy, the vestiges of all the other recreated murders boiling down to what it’s been about the entire time…the Wayne murders. And Robin understands that he cannot let Memento see him or get him, but to be Robin is to be in flight and he knows how to handle himself. Batman notices Robin first from the rooftops and begins to enact his own plan. He is able to dislocate a part of his hand to get a hand free to start breaking Lautrec and himself out as Robin approaches. Suddenly Memento notices him as well and moves forward to kill batman and Lautrec, but batman has his and free and he is able to push away the gun, leaving memento open for Robin to swoop in and Seivers a powerful kick that sends both of them flying into a close by opening in the ground that leads to a giant glowing mess. Batman is able to send out a grapple that Damian is able to grab onto and pull himself up, but memento is climbing up right behind him! Lautrec attempts to go for the Memento’s gun, but it seems that a mysterious older hand has already grabbed it. As batman and Robin stand tall against memento, ready to fight…suddenly a gun shot rings out as part of memento’s mask is blown off! Suddenly Blye is standing with the gun pointed at memento, surrounded by all of the vestiges of the people he has hurt since memento’s creation! They have all come for him, and although Blye regrets so much at how he failed Daniels…it ends here! Suddenly all the sports rush forward, sending memento over the side and down into the depths where he belongs! M

We jump to two nights later, Daniels body was found in park row, corner findings say his death were consistent with a fall from a roof. Blye is no where to be found, but based on Blye’s notes in Crane’s journal, it showed an understanding of the gravedigger’s poppy that could indicate he found a way into the vestiges. And if all the vestiges are connected…who’s to say what is truly possible. Lautrec and batman are reflecting on these events from a rooftop, Lautrec can’t help but reflect that this is Jack’s life now. Interrogating demons and chasing ghosts. But batman has learned not to turn to supernatural when other possibilities remain, but still he has seen his fair share of things he can’t explain. Either way if it was Daniels all along he’s dead, and if memento is real the. He is deprived of a host. Case is closed either way. Lautrec is returning to Paris where she still has a job, and batman thanks her for helping with these murders and bringing his son back, Robin holds her in high regard and he is right to. Lautrec begins to end the conversation by apologizing to batman for being too harsh on him before, his city is not like others and maybe it does need him and his son. But before she can finish talking she turns to face him and discovers that he is already gone.

The end of this issue has a beautifully illustrated (by Juni Ba) continuation of Robin’s self written comic about his adventures. Robin reflects on this adventure and his new outlook on his life, Gotham feels different and he used to feel as though it was his father’s city that he had to inherit. But now he has chosen, he has chosen to be a Wayne of Gotham, a healer, and a Robin, son of batman and protecter, for Gotham city. He has made the city his own, going out and finding his own secrets and riddles, and talking with people like the irregulars who still know more about the city than he ever will. But as robin he promises to stand strong and face whatever threats are to come. On the final page we also get an awesome tease for Robin’s new suit. Going back to the classic red and green, which is so perfect as Tim is moving back to the red in batman #1. Love that so much!

I thought this arc came to a satisfying conclusion. In fact this might be one of my new favorite Damian Wayne stories. PKJ knows how to write him so well. I'm so impressed. So excited to see what's happening next!

This was a fine ending if a bit anticlimactic to an interesting storyline. I enjoyed the ending and am glad it is over.
