Volume 3 of Plus-Sized Misadventures follows Yumeko shortly after she has finished stalking Keisuke through the theme park we left off in volume 2. The first half of this volume focuses primarily on Yumeko learning more about her past self and the relationships she had with others. The second half is Yumeko ticking off the director of the independent design company who was hired to design the packaging for the snacks Yumeko pitched in previous volumes, resulting in her having to apologize and win back that person's favor.

This volume gives the reader a lot of information while still keeping the (attempted) murder mystery at the heart of this series alive. It's very lighthearted, fun, and has an intriguing plot that keeps the reader engaged.

That being said, I have some mixed feelings about the series. Story-wise, it's fantastic. However, a core point of the story that Yuneko is plus-sized, and I don't feel like this story is always the best at representing plus-sized experiences.

On the positive side of things, Yumeko's optimistic and confident attitude is wonderful; she carries herself in a way that a lot of therapists probably wished their clients would. At the same time, the story doesn't shy away from showing how the external world is very cruel and dismissive toward Yumekp because she is overweight. It doesn't talk down to it's audience by having Yumeko's outlook on life change, then causing the whole world changes its opinion of her. Instead, it takes a more realistic approach. While the greater world doesn't change its view of her, those who are closest to her do. Because by valuing herself she is able to share that love with her friends and coworkers, and thus they reflect that love back to her.

All of this is fantastic. However, there are still some very classic fat jokes in the series. Such as Yumeko mishearing someone speak and immediately thinking that they are talking about food. Even Yumeko's confidence in herself can come off more mocking than playful at times.

To be fair, there is a common trope in manga/anime where a cocky character completely misreads a situation and believes that everyone is admiring them/in love with them (see: Tamaki from Ouran Host Club), which is often the joke that's being made with her. However, it does hit a bit different with Yumeko. Especially when there are characters who tell her she shouldn't be so confident because she is fat.

Admittedly, this is Volume 3. So if you have made it this far, then a lot of what I brought up probably isn't going to change your opinion of the series. Either you think it's a great representation, you don't, or you're somewhere in the middle (like me).

And if you've enjoyed the series this far, then you're going to enjoy this volume.

Also! Also! Plus-Sized Misadventures in Love! Volume 3 covers episodes 6 & 7 of the anime for anyone who is curious about the manga pacing versus the show.

And thank you to NetGalley for an advanced reader copy of this book!

Thank you to William Morrow for the gifted copy of Plus-Sized Misadventures in Love!, Volume 3 by mamakari.

This series honestly keeps getting more addictive the deeper it goes. What started as a cute romance setup has turned into this surprisingly emotional mix of self-worth, friendship, heartbreak, and mystery, and I’m way more invested than I expected to be.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Yumeko continues to be the heart of the series for me. Her confidence is messy and exaggerated sometimes, but that’s kind of what makes her feel real. I also really appreciate that the story doesn’t pretend the world magically becomes kinder just because she starts loving herself more. People are still judgmental, still cruel sometimes, and the manga actually acknowledges that.

The romance stuff in this volume hurt a little, not gonna lie. Watching Yumeko try to stay positive while dealing with unrequited feelings felt genuinely emotional. And then adding in more hints about the accident and everything surrounding it?? Yeah, I’m hooked.

That said, I still have mixed feelings about some of the humor. There are moments that feel empowering, and then others where the jokes lean a little too heavily into stereotypes.

What I Loved
• Yumeko’s confidence and emotional growth
• The mix of romance, comedy, and mystery
• The way the story explores how people react to plus-sized confidence
• The ongoing mystery surrounding the accident
• The balance between lighthearted moments and emotional ones

What Didn’t Work for Me
• Some of the fat jokes still feel uncomfortable or dated
• Certain comedy moments can feel more mocking than playful
• A few emotional beats felt rushed because of the shorter manga format

Overall, this volume kept me completely engaged. It’s cute, dramatic, frustrating, heartfelt, and weirdly insightful at the same time. If you’re already invested in the series, this one definitely gives you more emotional payoff while keeping the mystery alive.

Thank you to Net Galley, Edelweiss, and Harper Collins for the Advance Digital Review Copy!

What I am beginning to deeply appreciate is the author's understanding of how mad straight-sized people feel about plus-sized people being in anyway confident. Even if the author is playing it as a joke, I have had first hand experience of people getting made at curvy-folk for feeling good about their appearance.

The story is progressing really well, I feel like I'm watching a lot of moving parts being deftly navigated, and I think the fat jokes are becoming less of a shoulder for the story to lean on. I am really engaged in the mystery of how did Kudo fall?

Her confidence is top tier and I hope she doesn't ever lose it as she continues to delve into the past. The reveal about her mom was not surprising at all, but I was shocked to see she had an unsuspected ally in the detective (although her statements exasperate him).

I cannot wait until she regains some more memories and we get the answers to questions. Also, please let there be multiple love lines. She deserves to have a line of men basking in her beauty.

Thanks to the publisher and Edelweiss for the DRC. So happy this is getting published so more people can read it.

Yumeko is an introverted young woman who suffers amnesia after a car accident and suddenly becomes a new person—outgoing, self-confident, and ready to take on the world.

This volume covers a lot of Yumeko's discovery of her lost memories through those around her and taking more control of her life than she had pre-amnesia.
I really liked the intrapersonal and personal growth of Yumeko. Her confidence really affects those around her in both positive ways. The unfolding mystery involving the accident is also interesting.
Looking forward to the next chapter!

In this volume, she starts to remember pieces of her past. She talks with the detective, revisits the scene of the crime, and begins exploring her workplace in an attempt to trigger her memories. She’s also doing really well at her job, and we get to see more of how people treated her before the accident.

I am really enjoying this series.
I worry, however, that it's about to start stretching for filler plot instead of wrapping up.
This volume was still good, and we got a little more info about what happened that night, but nothing that really moved the plot forward.

Yukiko and the detective revisit the site of her accident and she begins to have slivers of her memory return, but nothing supremely helpful to solving the case. She tries to find people who can help her piece together what she was like before the accident and even retraces her steps throughout the company building in the hopes of jogging her memory further. Then, the packaging arrives for her new chips, and her insistence that the design be flashier runs her into trouble with the marketing firm contracted for the work.

Yukiko has one speed in her post-accident life — I’m amazing, keep up. Her boundless confidence brushes the line of being a punchline, but Mamakari keeps it ever so slightly on this side of being totally silly. This volume has some emotionally poignant moments as Yukiko discovers a bit more about herself pre-acciedent, and not all of it is as bad as we have been led to believe. The newly introduced character from the marketing firm is quite enjoyable and a bit of fresh air that Yukiko needed to keep the bit from getting stale.

Sara's Rating: 8/10

In this installment is learning more about how people viewed her before the accident and her amnesia. The grumpy detective working on her case is getting a soft spot for her. And her obsession her the vice-president continues on. We also meet the firecracker product packaging designer Degawa, and she fill us in on the unhappy couple.I love the depictions of Yumeko's outfits that are very cute with her figure. Just some drawings of her face are a bit much sometimes. The over exaggeration of the soft features turn to one big lump on occasion. Still her exuberance and confidence bring a lightness and joy to a otherwise heavy topic of self worth and self harm.
