“How quickly can one lose touch with reality as it intertwines with their memories? Falling asleep is a nightmare, but being awake feels like the most agonizing nightmare of all.” When I open my door to find a disturbing present with a note that raises more questions, I’m convinced the masked killers who plague the news every Halloween are coming after me, just like they targeted my husband. Determined to find answers, I sign a secret contract that sends me to an unknown location for 365 days. No reception. No human interaction. In the middle of a forest, inside a lookout tower, I find that I’m not alone. I should be—this was clearly stated in the contract. Yet, a masked man watches me from the other side, and I sense he knows far more than he’s letting on. The only problem is when I meet his piercing, icy-blue eyes—the kind that can light up the dark—whispers from the past rush into the present. I have to remind myself… “Rule number 4: Your husband is gone, so don’t search for him.” This book is a complete standalone. It contains flashbacks, dark themes, and is told in Dual POV — 1st person. CW will be available at the beginning of the book.

“Rule #4: Your husband is gone. Don’t search for him.”
Dark, chilling, and deeply psychological — Chalk Outline got under my skin in the best way.
A haunting, claustrophobic thriller that seeps under your skin and refuses to let go. When a woman signs a contract to spend 365 days in complete isolation, she expects silence. Instead, she finds herself watched by a masked stranger in the middle of nowhere.
This book caught my attention from the very start! I love the pull and push between Reeve and Winona! I really enjoyed the relationship development between Reeve and Winona. Their reconnection carried the kind of emotional weight and tension that kept me deeply invested. It grounded the story, adding heart to all the fear and uncertainty
tropes: 🔪 Masked MMC 🔪 Sassy strong FMC 🔪 Territorial/Obsessed 🔪 Flashbacks 🔪 Secrets 🔪 Pierced c*ck 🔪 Hand necklaces 🔪 Bre@th play 🔪 Pr!mal play 🔪 And more!
The story is eerie, slow-burning, and relentlessly psychological. It blurs the line between grief, memory, and madness in the most chilling way.
If you like thrillers that are more about atmosphere than jump scares, stories that make you feel the loneliness, the dread, the unraveling of a mind under pressure, this one is absolutely worth the read.
Dark, poetic, and impossible to forget. #bookreview #chalkoutline #kayjensen #psychologicalthriller #thrillerbooks #darkreads #bookrecommendation #bookstagram #goodreadsreview #mysteryreads #bookishcommunity
This book really had me confused with my feelings lol Not going to lie, it was hard to keep up at times with all the flashbacks, especially because they aren’t in order. Making this book take a lot longer for me to read. This one is def a slower burn but the smexy scenes make up for that! If you enjoy eerie thriller-ish vibes with a side of mind games and feelings of dread, try this
ARC Book Review: Chalk Outline by Kay Jensen. Thank you for choosing me as an ARC reader in exchange for an honest review! This book releases today!
My Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️
Recommendation: While this book has an intriguing premise and a moody, gothic atmosphere set in Salem, Massachusetts that is an automatic draw in for me, it ultimately will not be a series that I will continue. It’s one of those reads where the potential shines through, but the execution didn’t quite land for me.

Likes: I really enjoyed the relationship development between Reeve and Winona. Their reconnection carried the emotional weight and tension that drew me in. I also liked learning about Reeve's backstory. The concept of a non-government-sanctioned dark action hero-ish gave the story an edge, setting the stage for future books. The gothic Salem backdrop also added the perfect touch of eerie ambiance to the story’s tone.
Dislikes: That said, the balance felt off. The book was fun and spicy, but almost like it was sandwiched between the darker romance subplot. Without giving away spoilers, the setup around Winona not realizing who Reeve really was felt hard to buy into given how strong their supposed connection was. Winona also forgives far too quickly for my taste. It made the emotional payoff feel unearned. And for all of Reeve’s “touch her and die” energy, his behavior in the flashbacks didn’t align with that intensity. The villain group’s motives were also muddled; by the end, their “big plan” was confusing and surprisingly successful in a way that left me more puzzled than satisfied.
I don't really know how to feel about this book. These mixed feelings are messing me up right now. In the beginning it was a bit hard to follow everything, because of the flashbacks and then the worldbuilding. It took me a while to get into it. It is a difficult world to get to know, that's just a given. But then........ Then everything switched and the moment it did. i just couldn't stop thinking, breathing the book and these characters. This is something so different from everything i have ever read. It has so much darkness and not in a typical way that most books do. ( Maybe that's why it's so hard to describe this book)
I can only dream of a love this strong, because the more i read the more i saw that it wasn't just when he was her bodyguard, their lives are so woven together. They saved eachother multiple times and they didn't even really know it. I love a bodyguard romance just like the next girl but this one is just on a whole other level. Their banter from the moment they're put together till they reunite...... i don't want to give away too much but i can keep talking about these two and the love they have for eachother that i will spoil it all so. i won't..... The spice was incredible and again so different. the setting, the characters, the plot, the twists... All of it!!!!
It has such a rich background, the worldbuilding goes so deep and so far, that you really have to keep your head in it. Or you'll miss important details.
This was the perfect read for spooky fall/season. With the setting being in Salem Massachusetts and then being secluded in the woods it set the perfect vibes for an October read. This caught my attention pretty quickly and had me wanting to continue reading to get all my questions answered. (STAT) I really loved how the flashbacks gave you insight into their story and how it tugged at your emotions. I usually see plot twist coming and can guess pretty quickly where a book is going but I was pretty surprised with the books twist and turns . I love how Reeve is so possessive of Winona and would kill anyone who would think of harming her. I love how their relationship develops into bodyguard to husband and wife. Winona is a force to be reckoned with . I love how she talks back and can save herself . It is a bit of a slow burn but the spice was perfect ✨ I cannot wait to see what is done with the rest of the characters and where the next book leads .
If I had to sum up this book in one word then it would have to be WOW.
Chalk Outline is unlike anything Kay Jensen has previously written being a Dark Bodyguard romance. To say I was hooked from the start would be an understatement, this book gripped me tight and at times held my breath hostage. There were twists I didn't see coming, turns I never could have anticipated. Flashbacks that made my heart swell, my eyes water and my very soul ache.
The story is compelling and well thought out with little details scattered throughout that make you do a double take later on. Quotes and lines that hit so deep they leave you questioning your own life experiences.
Reeve Hardy is officially mine, I claim him and don't intend to share with anyone except Winona and Kay, once you read his story you'll totally understand why.
Reeve’s life experiences set him on a path towards his destiny, one that was hinted at before he could even comprehend what a future meant. He is everything you could possibly want from an MC, for Winona, our firecracker of an FMC, he would burn the world and shelter her from the flames. In return Winona complements him perfectly, holding just enough brat to ensure Reeve is always kept on his toes. She certainly shouldn't be judged on her appearance or introvert like nature since she truly is a force to be reckoned with.

This book kept me on my toes. The push and pull between Reece and Winona was delicious. Even when she didn’t fully realize it was him. This book was intriguing in the good kind of way. We get tons of flashbacks that give us good insight in to both of our mcs. Also… the presents and surprises (the good ones) that Reeves has for her… yes please. I’ll take 10 of those. Their path back to each other was hard and changed them, but at the end of the day, they’re still two souls that fit each other so beautifully. I ate this up.
