I have been wanting to read this author for a little while so I was excited to see this ARC come through on Netgalley.

I will say that it read very fast, I didn't feel board or check where I was at in the story. Andrew is an ASS. He very much is a problem and he sees Charlotte as his and what matters the most to him is ownership and compliance. And I don't hate him for it. Charlotte was in love and she tried hard but also knew when love wasn't enough. She needed more from him. But his grand gesture was truly a grand gesture, this man stepped up and finally decided to not put himself first so it felt satisfying.

My main issue is some of the transitions in the story. The two that stand out to me is after the party and the events that occur at a wedding towards the end of the book. It felt like we were kept in the dark and I have QUESTIONS that never were really answered.

Though the beginning was rough, it paid off in the long run, and it was a run that was very long for me.

I read 15-20% as soon as I got approved for the arc, then abandoned it until there were hours left to submit my review (sorry 😅)

I wasn’t in love with the “meet-cute” scene in the beginning, and then there were a few chapters strictly about law and stuff, but once I resumed my reading after the break, it was very fun.

Andrew was down-bad. Charlotte was standing on business. David was the diva TM. Queer rep with Chatham and Daisy.

Though Andrew fucked up, he realised his mistakes and REALLY grovelled, very progressive mindset on that dude.

It has cute parts, as well as angsty and sexy ones. Definitely worth giving it a try.

Thank you NetGalley for the ARC ❤️

An unexpected encounter sparks the beginning of a relationship that could have been extraordinary, but questionable decisions, secrets, and choices create a whirlwind of hurt.

Charlotte Grace has fought tirelessly to become England’s first female barrister, a groundbreaking achievement met with resistance from her male counterparts determined to undermine her success. Little did she imagine that Andrew Creswell, the Earl of Carlisle—the man she cares for deeply—would be the one to shatter her dreams. After six years apart, their paths cross again. Andrew is bewildered and hurt by Charlotte’s decision not to reunite as planned, and her silence only deepens the rift.

As they encounter each other in society, Andrew’s jealousy over Charlotte’s close relationship with her mentor, the Duke of Chatham, clouds his judgment. Believing he’s protecting what belongs to him, Andrew sets into motion a series of events that spiral into chaos. Confronted with the agonizing choice between his wealth and Charlotte’s destiny, he makes a decision that leaves lasting scars on them both. Forced into a marriage with the man who betrayed her, Charlotte uncovers a truth that shatters her perception of their relationship. As she escapes and his empire crumbles, Andrew must decide whether to cling to his legacy or sacrifice it all to prove he’s deserving of her forgiveness.

Charlotte and Andrew’s story is a compelling exploration of love, ambition, passion, and the destructive power of selfish desires. Their deep connection is undeniable, yet their inability to compromise diminishes the very love they cherish. While I empathized with Charlotte’s relentless pursuit of her dreams, her failure to consider Andrew’s sacrifices highlighted the imbalance in their relationship. For me when love is true you try to compromise and Charlotte didn’t seem to yield, that was all Andrew. Andrew, a walking contradiction, consistently made poor decisions despite knowing the potential consequences. However, his unwavering devotion, even amid his flaws, is both frustrating and endearing.

I adore a bit of angst in my stories, but this one was saturated with emotional turbulence. The narrative is filled with ups and downs, unexpected twists, and heart-wrenching moments that kept me on edge. Their swift connection contrasted sharply with the arduous journey toward happiness, making the outcome uncertain until the very end. From the gripping start to the steamy conclusion, this story is a rollercoaster of emotions.

Mihwa Lee’s extraordinary talent lies in her ability to capture the raw, emotional journeys of her characters, making readers feel every heartbeat, heartache, and triumph along the way. 'Touched by a Traitor' is an unforgettable tale of love, loss, and redemption that lingers long after the last page. I eagerly anticipate the next installment in this series.

I have purchased this book but thank NetGalley for providing an advanced copy and am voluntarily leaving a review.

3.5/4 I didn’t know anything about this book before jumping in, and even though I haven’t read a lot of Mihwa Lee’s books I do know I’m going to get a strong heroine and plot details that are different than you usually see in HR.

An encounter between Charlotte and Andrew, with Charlotte at her most desperate to fund her dreams that also cements the other in their hearts.

Charlotte is intelligent and practical after her parent’s death and being left to fend for herself. Finding a loophole, she challenges the social norm and traditionalists by becoming a barrister under the tutelage of the Duke of Chatham six years after that fateful night.

Andrew is a self made man that struggles between doing the right thing and that which he’s had to do to survive and continue to be successful.

I really loved the relevance of a historic issue that is still (unfortunately) a modern one. The hardships and misogyny that Charlotte endured highlighted that the struggle women face who are career-minded is not new. While I would’ve wished for an author’s note on her research and if she based Charlotte on any real persons, I was drawn enough into the story that I was able to put it to the back of my mind.

There’s a lot of heat but plenty of longing and angst. In the first half their relationship is forbidden and the second half seeking forgiveness. It’s filled with a lot of emotion throughout and almost a roller coaster of it at times.

The beginning foreshadowed how it would come to a head and yet I wondered how forgiveness and a path forward would be possible. I was convinced in the end, it was hard fought and not resolved quickly which worked for me.

For as much as I enjoyed the story and characters, parts of the story felt disjointed and I was missing something in the character’s backstory. Giving me the impression that I skipped a book in the series or these were areas cut to make the story shorter. I wanted to ignore it but they occurred too often for me to do so.

Overall, I really enjoyed this story and am still looking forward to what comes next in this series.

Touched by a Traitor is the first book in the Daring Damsels series.

There are six open door explicit encounters.

I received an advanced reader copy from the publisher via NetGalley. All opinions are my own.

When one fleeting encounter defines a lifetime

Charlotte is a woman who fought tooth, nail and dignity to become London’s first female barrister. She’s driven and determined when it comes to her career. Luckily her tutor and dear friend is a duke, but even he can’t protect her from misogyny.
Andrew is the self-made shipping magnate who earned himself an earldom. Blood, sweat and great determination; everything to make his little sister happy. Stuck between two worlds, he walks a traitorous line between business and love.

They meet again six years later; he realises she deceived him, and she fails to explain. His pent-up feelings, her precarious position and a whole pack of stuck-up peers force them into a battle between heads and hearts. Jealousy triggers compromising, and suddenly they’re married. But the pack isn’t done with them...

This book was an emotional rollercoaster with courtroom drama, secrets, conspiracy, power struggles, hidden agendas, old hurt, assumptions, good intentions gone wrong, and while their hearts fused instantly, their relationship is a battlefield. Don’t worry, there’s a fair bit of tender lovin’ care and romance as well.

I’m on the fence about Charlotte. Ambitious and uncompromising, it’s very much about what she wants, her plans, her future. She admires all the good his wealth provides, but fails to consider what losing it would mean for him, his charities and employees. And while she accepts their marriage, in the end, it’s her way or nothing.
Rough, tough and irrevocably in love, Andrew screws up several times (and she’s partly to blame). Yes, he’s jealous and possessive, but he’s also fiercely loyal and patient. He makes mistakes out of ignorance, fear and arrogance, but his devotion to her is never in question. He grovels and sacrifices, and yet somehow I’m left feeling he deserved better.

A very engaging, intense and twisty read with lots of spice and a nice bit of queer rep in the sidelines. An intriguing start to a new series, and I’m rather curious where it will take me.

A typical Mihwa Lee story with love at first sight, love-hate and redemption arc tropes and a unique storyline. It's emotional, unconventional, controversial, socially critical and steamy and had me hooked from the first page. Did I like the characters? Let's just say they're not among my favorites. Both Andrew and Charlotte have their endearing and unpleasant sides. Andrew is a self-made man who tries too hard to fit in, and Charlotte is a strong heroine who goes her own way against all odds.
For both, career is more important than love for long stretches and his betrayal was despicable. But both their reasons were ultimately understandable and I could relate to them. Andrew's groveling was sweet and sometimes pitiable.

Years ago, Charlotte Morton was ready to sell her virginity to escape her old life and fulfill her dream of studying law and becoming the first female barrister. At Madame Tansley's she met Andrew Cresswell, who saw the potential in her and fell in love with her. She turned down his proposal of marriage at the time, although she also felt attracted to him. Nevertheless, he supported her financially without asking for anything in return.
In the meantime, Andrew has been minted Earl of Carlisle and tries to adapt to the world of the aristocracy so as not to jeopardize his new title and his business. When he sees Charlotte again, the old feelings come flooding back. But she is despised by her colleagues and Andrew is drawn into their intrigues. When he compromises Charlotte in front of everyone, she has no choice but to marry him. But this leaves Andrew with an impossible choice: to support Charlotte and fight for her, risking everything he has worked hard for and achieved or betray her and risk losing her- because his happiness and success are incompatible with hers and her career…

Highly recommended for all who love romances with more tension, conflict and a hard-earned happy ending!

I received a free ARC of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own and left voluntarily.

Humm, what to say about this book. First, I want to say I have read several of Mihwa books and loved then. I had a hard time with this one, there is a lot of underlining issues in this book that shape both the main characters. I had a hard time finishing it and almost stopped a couple of times. I am not a strong political person. This book has a lot of the law and strong views that make one of the main character, Charlotte Morton life both fulfilling and causes her much pain and suffering. Including rape, which for some maybe hard to read. It is handled well by the author. Charlotte has one goal in life, to be the first female barrister! She will use disguises, play the part of a man and do unspeakable things to get her degree. While our other main character, a self-made man, Andrew Creswell has worked since he was twelve to provide for him and his sister. Rising from the streets to owner of one of the largest trading corporations in London. He is now an Earl with all he wanted and worked for except the one woman he has ever cared about beside his sister, Charlotte. One night changed their lives and now six years later much has changed. With secrets, lies, and pride they do a lot of harm to each other. I had a problem with their actions to each other and how they let what other felt lead them astride. There are other characters who add to the drama and cause problems for Charlotte and Andrew. When they met again after six years she is with a duke, Albert Chatham and seem a couple. Nothing is as it seems in this book. With plenty of steam, and tons of twist and turns it is sometimes hard to keep it all straight. Others have a very different opinion then mine. I do thank the author for sending me an ARC. This is my honest opinion and am freely giving it. I will for sure more of the details before buying other books in this series.

This book was such an emotional roller coaster, and I was rooting for Charlotte and Andrew the whole way through. I went in expecting a second chance romance, and while I definitely got that, I also got a much bigger story about strength, resilience, and women fighting to be seen.

Charlotte was hands down my favorite part of the book. I loved how unapologetically strong she was - sharp, determined, and so consistent in her commitment to her career, even when everyone around her was trying to tear her down. As England’s first female barrister, she’s such a force, and I admired how she gave women in that era hope that they could be more than just objects.

Andrew was… complicated. He’s sweet in his own way, but also frustrating and, honestly, pretty stupid at times. I understood that his childhood and upbringing shaped him, but oh, some of his choices made me want to yell at him. Still, the connection between him and Charlotte was full of sparks and raw emotions. Their relationship really did feel like a roller coaster, full of anger, longing, and a whole lot of heartbreak.

The only thing I wish was different is that I wanted more from Charlotte in showing Andrew how much he meant to her, not just him fighting for her. That balance would’ve made their romance hit even harder for me.

But overall, I loved this story. It was emotional, dramatic, and so much more than just a romance - it was also about women’s empowerment and pushing against the double standards of society. Charlotte’s journey from the gutters of London to where she ends up is just inspiring.

A really strong read with a heroine I’ll remember for a long time.

As I read the synopsis to the book, I was genuinely excited to read it. The beginning started differently with meeting of the two characters. I found Charlotte’s character to be introduced in a lovely way. Her sub-plot or background story adds such mystery and interesting stories. I like her character very much.
As to Lord Crestwell, well I really did love his character. The inter action with his quote un quote mother was scandalous and intriguing. I just knew that the little story between them was taking this book somewhere delicious and fun. Ahh, but sadly I was thrown by the connection of Charlotte and Andrew at the beginning. For a plot or story such as theirs, that love scene was not right for the beginning.
I totally lost all of my thrill and excitement of a true love story that was to be amazingly beautiful. It was something that I just knew that I would always love the connection I had with the book each and every that I saw the cover of this book. As I said the beginning took that away from me. And most definitely with Grace being of age twenty-one.
I would for the female character to be of a much more maturer age when I read the love scenes. The connection gets lost when I try imagining a young lady in the throes of passion with a gentleman. It’s almost like reading my daughter’s diary. Eeek - gah. If the lady could have been older as she’s described later the book the scene would be more comfortable to read and pushed me forward with reading the book. Now do not think that I do no like the authors writing. I view of her writing is far from that. I’ve read and reviewed previous books from her and they were spectacular.
It’s only with this book that it was hard to enjoy. Until next time my fellow readers. Read on!

I like Mihwa Lee's writing and have greatly enjoyed her other books. Touched By a Traitor was a difficult one for me though, and I have mixed feelings after reading the book.

The chemistry between Charlotte & Andrew is smoking hot from the first time they meet. They're both brilliant, highly motivated, and dedicated to their goals. Charlotte wants to be the first female barrister in London, and Andrew wants to ensure the success of his shipping company to keep his investors happy. Neither is willing to compromise so they part, with Andrew promising to help Charlotte with the cost of law school.

They cross paths again 6 years later, and it's an emotionally fraught story of underhanded stunts, slimeball humans, misogyny run amok, secrets, drama, misunderstandings and assumptions. Andrew screws up a number of times, but apologizes profusely, tries to correct things and do better. This is where the story falls apart for me. I didn't really see anything indicating Charlotte's willingness to work with Andrew. She came across as still completely unwilling to compromise in any way. For me a happy ending is when both spouses work together to have a great marriage. What I read in Touched By a Traitor came across to me as Charlotte reaching her goals and Andrew doing everything possible to make it happen because he loves her. I would have liked to see more of Charlotte showing Andrew in words & action how much he means to her too. So while this was a great story of women's empowerment, it wasn't the historical romance story I was looking for.

I received an ARC of this book and leaving my review voluntarily.

There’s a lot happening in this book—maybe a touch too much—but the characters kept me hooked the whole way through. I loved Charlotte’s ambition and resilience, and I especially loved watching Andrew claw his way through a truly punishing growth arc. I was practically shouting at both of them to just be honest already, but given the stakes, their silence felt painfully believable.

One thing I really appreciated: the “happily ever after” doesn’t hinge on a wedding. That happens earlier, and the real work of their HEA comes after the vows—messy, grueling, but ultimately so satisfying. By the time they get there, it feels like they’ve been dragged through fire, wrung out, kneaded like dough, and only then made ready for each other.

Charlotte’s consistency as a character comes through in her absolute commitment to her career. As the first woman barrister in England, she’s sharp, unflinching, and every force imaginable is stacked against her simply because she’s a woman. It grounds the story beautifully, even while Andrew is shouldering a mountain of growth and redemption.

Some of the plot threads could’ve used more depth—or been trimmed altogether—to keep the story tighter, but everything does come together in the end.

Mihwa Lee always brings such originality to her stories—plots that refuse to be formulaic and characters who stay with you. This one is no exception, even if I wished for a slightly smoother ride.

Thanks to Mihwa Lee, Dragonblade and NetGalley for the advance copy.

Whew this one was almost too emotional to finish! The hero was controlling and self serving for most of the book! The heroine couldn’t let them be great she went on to give her precious gift to a manipulative self serving blackmailer! Whew child way too much drama and trauma in this story!
We have Andrew Creswell and Charlotte Grace thru meet at a brothel owned by Andrews’s ma who had assisted him and sisters survival from the streets!
Charlotte was there to barter her virginity so that she could attend law school! She was willing to sacrifice anything and everything to realize her dreams even her virtue!
Andrew came to her with a honorable offer she rejects and this sets the pace for when they see each other years later!
Charlotte is ashamed of her actions when they meet later and Andrew is much changed and has become a peer!
Andrew is so lust filled and just plain obsessed with Charlotte it borders on a kind of madness! It is inevitable they part again but this break make be irreparable! Andrew’s betrayal cut do deep it almost drew blood!
There are steamy scenes you expect from the author but the secondary characters live an alternate lifestyle which I felt was not needed! It did explain some of Charlotte’s actions and her desperate attempts to keep secrets!
I am not quite sure if it is a HEA more of a reconciliation and restructuring of the love they have!
I received an ARC copy for my unbiased review!

I think this might be Mihwa Lee's best book yet. So much more than a formula romance. Strong and stubborn FMC and MMC. FMC driven by the the injustices she witnessed happen to her parents, wanting to trailblaze a greater path for women rather than settling for the easy comfort offered by MMC. MMC self made, clawed from poverty to industry titan. Both justified in fighting tooth and nail for their beliefs. When they overcome their own wants and make sacrifices for each other, it's that much more satisfying having seen them grow through this epic story. A real roller coaster with lots of twists and turns, heck even upside down. Riveting from the opening scene through to the steamy epilogue. Even the side stories are impactful in their intensity and stakes, all coming together with a satisfying bang. As usual, Ms. Lee has her signature great character chemistry, peppy dialogue and a sprinkling of humour throughout with an eclectic cast of side characters. I'll be adding this to my read again pile and look forward to more in this series.

Thank you to Mihwa Lee, Dragonblade and Netgalley for providing an advance preview copy.

Like all the other stories by this author, this story was beautiful, moving, and unique. It was a wonderful tale of Charlotte, a lady barrister, and Andrew, a self-made man turned Earl. Charlotte loved law and dreamed of being a barrister to advocate for those unfortunate souls who get left behind in society. From the moment they met, Andrew was captivated by Charlotte, but he was a slave to his investors and society because he didn’t want to disappoint or let down all the people depending on him. While the reader bias was definitely toward Charlotte, it was written so well that you could also sympathize and understand the predicament Andrew was in. He didn’t fully come off as a jerk and unfeeling, which would have been easy to do in a story like this. Instead, we are drawn to feel the pull and tug for both characters and their struggles.

I had the honor of reading Touched by a Traitor prior to its release thanks to NetGalley, and it stands out as a powerful reinvention of betrayal and forgiveness within a historical setting. If you're new to Mihwa Lee, getting introduced to her with this book is an emotional treat.

Mihwa weaves a delicate balance—Charlotte's fierce resilience and the Earl’s tortured redemption arc are painted with compassion. Their marriage of convenience is far more than a trope, it’s a battlefield of trust, guilt, and ultimately, choice. You’re rooting for them real hard. Their slow thaw unfolds with intent—the stakes feel real, and so does the heartbreak.

Mihwa Lee is bold, genre-savvy, and delivers emotionally honest stories that stay with you. Touched by a Traitor also kicks off her Daring Damsels series, so dive in—this one’s not to miss!

Love seeing a fmc in this political setting where women are supposed to be breed and at home. They both came from troubled childhood paving a future for themselves.

It starts off one night where she ready to sell something really dear to her so she can buy a chance for her future and him wanting to create a name for himself and care for his sister. They part way promising to reconnect in the future & see the Betrayal forced marriages . It definitely wasn’t a walk in the park but I love that charlotte was for the women in those era speaking up for them giving women hope to be more than an object . Seeing the mmc literally go through the motions of what’s actually important .

Side note the bar fight ? Hilarious because why would Chattman know how to fight like that lmfaooo.

Oh the chemistry with these two MC was fantastic! Charlotte and Andrew have such a back and forth to overcome. She is the career minded young lady ages ahead of her time for society, and he a self made wealthy business man. An early in life meeting sparks the continuous entwining of their lives which stokes their desires. I really enjoyed the twists and turns that this couple must go through.

Charlotte is steadfast in what she wants from life and her partner. Andrew is complicated and often gets in his own way. Yet he has never stopped pining for the woman he met all those years ago. His journey to figure out how to reconcile what he wants with how it will work within current society is fabulous.

What a journey! I knew as soon as we had the first meeting between Charlotte and Andrew at the brothel, that it was gonna be good. Their relationship was put through the wringer - highs and lows, separations and betrayal. Andrew made a lot of mistakes to say the least. He played the long game and fortunately got Charlotte back.

Bonus points for a queer relationship for two side characters AND the name dropping of Oberlin College in Ohio. I first heard about the history of Oberlin and their admittance of women and POC in Piper Huguley's THE LAWYER'S LUCK. It's so cool to see Charlotte with connections to Oberlin as well. It's like a really cool Suffragette Easter egg!

Thank you to Mihwa Lee and Dragonblade for the copy of this book. Opinions are my own.

This was a really quick, and somewhat enjoyable, read. First one by this author.

For me, usually the MMC will redeem himself in a very worthy manner in a historical romance novel, and in this story, Andrew has a lot of redeeming to do. Quite simply, he is a jerk who claims to love Charlotte and want a life with her, all the while expecting her to give up on every dream she has. Even after marriage, he is still a petty, insecure man. I think Charlotte is strong and resilient, but in the end, I feel as though Andrew still wants Charlotte to simply be a wife and mother (even though she voices her concerns about how pregnancy will affect her ability to attend law school).

Special thanks to Dragonblade Publishing and Netgalley for my review copy.

Travelling the Rocky Road!
OMW! This was so heart wrenching - the angst!
It is such a well told and beautiful love story with two main characters who tried their very best to make their worlds worth living in.
Along the road they found a passion and longing for each other but a lot had to happen before they could settle into a well earned happy every after.
I loved this quote from this amazing story, "But I'm prepared to spend every day loving you the way you ought to be loved and become the partner you need." It just speaks to my heart.
I was lucky enough to read an early copy of this emotional story and am happy to recommend it.

Good things, I really liked Andrew. I found him to be thoughtful even though dumb about some things, loving and caring. Charlotte, you go girl, was whipsmart and stood up for women. The story of women becoming something men thought improper was empowering, both Charlotte and Daisy. Showing all types of people and that we are one big world full of interesting people. What I did not like, the jumps in time. Charlotte being stubborn, yes I know Andrew did wrong, but she let it go on and on and on and he did grovel, a lot. Weird subplots, you will know if you read. Honestly, I am not sure about the love story. I am interested in Andrew’s friends and what their stories will entail.

The author writes a riveting story with lots of twists and turns. Her characters are as unique as her story lines. I think the writing is exceptional and would rate it top of the scale. However, I absolutely hated the character of Charlotte. It is easy to endear oneself to the hero after reading about his hardships, work ethic, family, charities, etc. While I can appreciate the dedication of the heroine in pursuit of her life’s work, she gives absolutely no quarter or sympathy for some of the decisions and scenarios her behavior and communications (or lack of) cause for the hero. She goes too far to hold him to a standard that makes it hard for me to cheer for her happily ever after.

A complex love story!

I found this book entertaining from beginning to end. The main characters, Charlotte and Andrew, are strong and complex. Their chemistry is awesome, and their relationship is intense with a mix of love and hate.
There is a beautiful current running between them, but lies, secrets, and bad decisions cause difficult issues to resolve. They will go on difficult and complicated paths before finding their HEA.

I did like this book quite a bit since it varied in its setting and how the story progressed. However, I felt that the angst while real, leaned too heavily on the guy taking the blame for everything and working his way to forgiveness. Charlotte had her faults too, but she just seemed like a b**tch to Andrew after a certain point. He has his faults, but a lot of his actions are coming from a place of misguided love, loyalty and protection, so I did feel sorry for our hero.

Overall a decent read.

Andrew and Charlotte’s love story is not a typical one. This one has a twist. I enjoyed most of the story.
Andrew’s backstory was very interesting you can see how he managed to grow to his empire. Charlotte is just as interesting but the details were not too clear. The way the met was great. Overall, I enjoyed the story. I feel that much could be done. There were transitions in different situations that seem disjointed. Also so many unanswered questions concerning their storyline. I do believe that they loved each other but I struggled with Charlotte’s love for Andrew.

Another great book by Mihwa Lee. Lee expresses the emotional and ever frustrating struggles of how women were treated in historic times as well as men who were born lower class trying to move up. Charlotte and Andrew’s relationship is a roller coaster of mixed emotions as they each struggle to deal with societal norms. Their love story is truly heartbreaking. Will they ever be able to work it out. Are some things just too unforgivable?

This story has a lot of emotional drama. Charlotte's desire to practice law is admirable. The patriarchal traditionalists sound too close to current events. The tricks they try to pull are sad. I liked that this story lifts up empowering women while pointing out the double standards that some men hold. Andrew is sweet, but stupid at times given his upbringing. His devotion is amazing, even when things are tough. It is a jam packed book with a big story that was enjoyable to read.

A new series by an author who writes bold, challenging and intense stories related to women who refuse to give up their goals and desires. Charlotte has a determination that pushes all the envelopes. Andrew is so focused on his own needs and desires that the relationship is fraught with intense conflict, while love is diligently carving out a place for happiness. If you haven't read this author's work before, I highly recommend you start with this book. You will be a fan in no time, cheering, frustrated and emotional engaged by both characters.
