They say you can’t outrun your past. But I wasn’t just trying to escape. I was trying to disappear.
When Elaina arrives in a coastal town in northern Spain, she carries nothing but a false name, the weight of a broken past, and secrets she can’t afford to let slip. On the run from a life she never chose, she lands a job at a castle-turned-luxury hotel.
But her temporary hiding place soon becomes something far more.
A hotel thrumming with energy. A staff village pulsing with tension, fleeting attachments, blooming friendships—and faces far too curious for comfort.
Then there’s Orlando. Distant. Mysterious. Unreadable—even as his penetrating gaze seems to cut straight through the deepest, darkest parts of her she’s spent years trying to bury.
Something darker is stirring beneath the surface, lurking in the shadows of her new life. The longer she stays, the more the edges begin to blur—between safety and danger, trust and suspicion, survival and surrender, hiding and being seen.
You can run. You can change your name. You can change your life.
But the past will always find a way to claw you back into the shadows.

Amara Phoenix is a traveller at heart and storyteller by nature, writing romantic suspense with tension-filled drama, heart twisting romance, and an irresistible dash of danger.
When she’s not plotting trouble for her characters, you’ll find her with a coffee in one hand and a book in the other—planning her next trip or daydreaming about far off places while watching Formula One.
First off, I just want to say that I got the amazing opportunity become and ARC for the wonderful Amara Phoenix, and let’s just say I will be a forever fan!!! I hope I get to have the opportunity to be an arc for her again! Now for the review, this does contain some spoilers!!! I’m still new with reviews so please be nice☺️ The book starts off as a young girl who is trying to get away and she runs to an older lady’s house. This scene immediately makes me think of the movie Safe Haven with Julianne Hough and Josh Duhamel (if you haven’t watch I highly recommend) and it immediately already peaked my interest because that’s one of my comfort movies. As she runs she finds a beautiful town by the waters where she decides to settle down and finds a job at a beautiful castle. While trying to apply for said job she meets the ever so loving (😉) Harriet. (You’ll definitely love her might I add😂) As Els gets settled in you come to meet the fiery red head Tiana who the life of the party and doesn’t take anyone’s ****. The scene where they meet will have you blushing in many ways!! Once on the job she FINALLY runs into Seníor Sunshine (Orlando) after seeing him from afar. She works along side him doing gardening while he broods at times yet other times will have her giggling and wanting to know more. As she begins to feel safe she gives him a glimpse of her past he listens intently even though his expression was unreadable, I’ll insert a quote, “Not everyone finds the courage to escape what feels inescapable. You may not know it, Elaina, but by breaking free from whoever caged you, you’ve already shown more courage than most people will ever show.” Idk about you but I was kicking, screaming, and in blushing. Later on you in the book, Elaina encounters an ***hole who you learn about in the book (I won’t say names but you’ll definitely know as soon as he’s introduced) and this is when possessive, protective Orlando comes out. 🤭 He wants to know all about her but this causes a tiff because he shuts down when she turns the questions on her. OBVIOUSLY this leads to the fun scenes!!! Finally as the book draws to the end her past finally begins to catch up to her… she tries to run but Orlando is there trying to stop her. Will he?? I’m still new with writing reviews so I’m sorry if it’s not very good but this book will have you NOT wanting to put it down (as I read it in two days!!) I was feeling every emotion from giddy, to butterflies, to my stomach dropping when her past caught up to her! I will give ONE spoiler because I about wanted to cry when I found out (I didn’t read the fine print and that’s on me😂) IT ENDS ON A CLIFFHANGER!!!!! But anyways I highly recommend this book!!! Amara Phoenix, you did an amazing job! Ig I’ll wait till next year for the second one😉🤪 you will forever have a fan in me💗
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Holy shit. Okay. Let me start off by saying thank you so much for letting me read this as part of the arc team.
Jesus Christ, where do I even start? This follows the story of Elaina and Orlando. Elaina is on the run from a life she never wanted, seems fair to do a runner at that point. Orlando is the mysterious, distant, unreadable man at the castle Elaina finds herself working at.
The tensionnnnn, holy shit, the tension between these two was just 🥵🥵
Amara, I need book two, that cliffhanger was something else. 😮💨😮💨
I have know the author my whole life, and always knew she could write, but man did she blow me away with this book. I absolutely loved it! The story was mysterious, tense, emotional and beautifully written. I could not put it down!
If you like a slow-burn romance filled with secrets, tension and just the right amount of smut - this one’s for you!
This book proves that even if buildup stretches until about the halfway mark, once the plot starts to fall into place, it’s so worth it ❤️
Elaina stole my heart. In so many books with similar trauma backstories, the heroine is written as fragile or submissive but not her. She refuses to let her past define her and never lets anyone push her around. not the staff, not the Barbie duo, not even Orlando 🤣 She may not be as sharp-tongued as T, but she holds her ground, and I loved that about her.
The storytelling is vivid, immersive, and deeply descriptive. Not just with the characters, but the world around them too. Even something as simple as walking from the point A to point B becomes an experience, with every detail brought to life like the sky, the trees, the atmosphere. It feels like you’re right there beside the characters, soaking it all in. It plays out like a movie in your head, and I loved every moment of it.
Now I’m already impatient for Book 2. Will Victor make an appearance? And (fingers crossed) will we be seeing more of Dominic? 🙈 Either way, I know I’ll be first in line to read it.
OK. Wow! alright... This was atmospheric and tense, this story draws you into Elaina’s escape and the eerie charm of a castle-turned-hotel in Spain. The character tension was great, the realness of the characters not being perfect and being insecure, scared, and human.
The opening does linger a bit, but once it picks up, it’s hard to put down. That cliffhanger! Exactly the kind that makes you want to reach for book two immediately. If you’re into dark, descriptive suspense with a gothic edge and don’t mind a slower start, this is one to pick up.
Okay, so wow… I honestly didn’t expect to binge this book the way I did. I thought it might take me a while to get into, but from page one I was hooked. The tension, the atmosphere, the secrets…it pulled me in and didn’t let go.
This is a slow-burn, romantic suspense that has everything: a heroine on the run, hidden identities, forbidden romance, dangerous secrets… all the tropes that keep you flipping pages at 2am.
Elaina stole my heart. She refuses to let her past define her and never lets anyone push her around… even when it costs her. Orlando felt like the perfect counterpart to her guarded strength, balancing her fire with his quiet intensity. He’s the kind of hero that sneaks up on you—reserved, observant, someone who notices more than he says. The chemistry between him and Elaina isn’t rushed… it builds slowly, burning in the background until it finally hits you like a storm. Their connection felt dangerous, vulnerable, and magnetic all at once.
And ohhh… no way I would’ve guessed this was a debut novel. What I loved most was the author’s ability to describe not just the characters but their world so vividly I could see it all unfolding like a movie. Every side character had depth, even those who only appeared briefly… I felt like I knew them.
The suspense here is quieter..not in-your-face with car chases and explosions but it seeps into you. Each chapter feels like a shadow creeping closer, blurring the lines between trust and betrayal, survival and surrender. And as a voyeur myself… those moments where Elaina watched? Absolute highlights for me 👀🔥
By the end, the payoff was worth every twist and turn. It’s one of those books that makes you think long after you close it, reminding you that strength and love can be found even in the darkest places.
Nowwwww what was that ending 😭😭 how do I sleep… and how long am I supposed to wait for book two because I need it rnnnnnn…
Talk about a debut novel! There is nothing I love more than to support indie authors, and I double down on new authors! Amara absolutely killed it on her debut. When Shadows Whisper was so freaking good! The way she describes the people and places painted such a clear picture that you felt like you were right there with them
This is book one in a two-book series, and the slow burn was torturous! I nearly messaged the author at one point, asking when they would finally give in!
Elaina and Orlando’s chemistry is off the charts; the hot and cold, sweet and harsh dynamic of their relationship draws you in and leaves you craving more.
Random side note…Elaina is such an accidental voyuer, and I am here 👏for👏it 👏. There may not be a lot (definitely some) spice between the main characters, but my girl Elaina watches more than a few spicy encounters throughout the book, so don’t worry, you’ll still get to experience the spice you crave, even if the main couple doesn’t supply all of it.
The way she was able to weave intrigue and deep human emotions into each page is top-notch. Each character feels so real, and I found myself desperate to learn more about their pasts and their secrets. The story is full of hidden motives, schemes, and unanswered questions, creating a compelling atmosphere for readers. Everyone seems to be hiding something, and the deadly game of cat-and-mouse keeps you on edge, second-guessing every move.
If you need me, I will be impatiently waiting for the release of book two and stalking the author’s page!
💜What to expect 💜Heronie on the run 💜mysterious broody hero 💜Reluctant attraction/Forced Proximity 💜Secret identity 💜Slow-burn tension 💜spice
Where Shadows Whisper is a hauntingly atmospheric romantic suspense that grips you tight and doesn’t let go.
We follow a heroine scarred by trauma but unbroken in spirit, her story a blend of survival and resilience. She longs for freedom, but freedom comes at a price — and with a male lead who is as enigmatic as he is dangerous. Their push-and-pull creates tension, chemistry, and uncertainty that keeps the pages flying.
The castle backdrop is vividly drawn — its grand halls, ancient artefacts, and looming shadows become more than setting; they become characters in their own right. The surrounding nature and storms reflect the chaos within.
The supporting cast is equally vivid. Some characters evoke fierce loyalty, others pure hatred — but none are forgettable. That balance between love, hate, and loathing is what makes this world feel alive.
The book ends on a cliffhanger, the kind that leaves you both frustrated and thrilled, desperate for the sequel.
💭 “Even when darkness whispers, the human spirit still dares to answer.”
📌 Content Tone: This story explores darker themes — trauma, power imbalance, and survival — but its focus remains on resilience, healing, and the slow rebuilding of trust.
From the very first page, this story grips you by the throat. Elaina the FMC isn’t just running she is trying to vanish, clawing her way out of a life built on secrets and scars. The isolated coastal town in northern Spain feels hauntingly alive, with its castle-turned luxury hotel holding as many secrets as the people inside it. Orlando is the perfect counterpart to Elaina’s guarded, fragile strength. He is mysterious, unreadable, the kind of man who sees more than he says. The chemistry is a slow, smoldering burn, threaded with danger and vulnerability that made my heart race. The suspense here isn’t loud, it creeps. It lingers. Every chapter feels like another shadow creeping in from the corners, blurring the line between trust and betrayal, survival and surrender. Overall, this is a romantic suspense was haunting, emotional, and beautifully tense. It’s the kind of story that follows you long after the last page. If you love slow-burn romance tangled in secrets, shadows, and danger lurking just out of sight, this one will devour you whole. I will say, the cliffhanger, is strong...I need more!
Amara Phoenix delivers a gripping, edge-of-your-seat story in When the Shadows Whisper. From the very first chapter, the suspense pulls you in and doesn’t let go. The main character’s journey is marked by constant tension—persecution, doubt, and the weight of secrets that threaten to consume everything. You can almost feel the shadows creeping closer with every page.
But what makes this story even more powerful is the touch of romance threaded through the darkness. That spark of connection, even in the face of danger, added warmth and hope when it was needed most. It gave the suspense even higher stakes and reminded me that love can be just as much of a lifeline as courage.
By the end, the payoff was worth every twist and turn. It’s one of those books that leaves you thinking long after you close it, reminding you that strength—and love—can be found even in the darkest of places.
— A chilling, suspenseful, and deeply moving story with just the right dash of romance.
Elaina and Orlando. they make such a great hot, sexy and spicy pair in this book. Elaina is running from her past and Orlando is the hot broody guy can it get any better than that? I mean this is all you need to make a great story. and this definitely delivered in this one. i love how this story takes place in a castle turned hotel. how cool is that? and every character in this story was so well written. amazing plot, great moments. spicy is a definite in this! gonna need a cold shower afterwards lol. I really hope I'm able to read the next book as an ARC also. I need that followup!! hahaha!
I received this as an ARC and I'm leaving a voluntary review ❤️
Wow. Actually I didn't expect this book to hook me up as much as it did, im so glad I read this, i loved every aspect of it, it's well written and I love the story telling and how it makes u just excited to know more, the mystery behind all of it, i can't wait for the next book of this duo, I 100% recommend
Elaina’s story starts off on page one. When I say starts off I mean be prepared, because holy moly there is no easing into this world. Amara just slams you right into Elaina’s world. I loved it!
This story needs to be read without any spoilers honestly. Go in blind. Some things become clear as you read, (so definitely check the triggers) but this story unfolds like a psychologically dark thriller Netflix show. Tensions will be high, the love interest is hot 🥵, but don’t trust anyone! This does end on a cliffhanger, but I highly recommend reading!
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
I need my romances rich with tension, and this book really delivered! I also loved the setting: Spain, a castle, all that mystery... and whenever someone is running from their past I want to be right there running with them. This ended with a cliffhanger so book 2 please hurry up! ❤️❤️❤️
Hard to believe, but this was Author Amara Phoenix’s debut novel. And boy did she come out blazing! Right from the first page she had me hooked. Both Elaina and Orlando had me biting my nails and thinking “come on, come on”. The tension... The emotion... The suspense...
The story doesn’t let up right to the very end… which is a CLIFFHANGER!!!
Now I have to continue biting my nails and pray that Amara writes really fast so I can find out what happens in the end.
Wow. Just wow. Is there a more feeling than wow? Double wow? The writing is “chefs kiss” beautiful without ever feeling overdone, and the story pulled me in right away. The characters felt so… intense? Natural? Lively? definitely a book I kept thinking about when I wasn’t reading. If you like books that feel a little mysterious but also deeply emotional, I think you’d love this one.
Talk about keeping me on my toes with all of these secrets, lies, and HOLY SLOW BURN!!!! I need book 2 tomorrow cuz also what do you mean you are leaving us on that cliffhanger Amara?!
This story was too confusing and too convoluted with trying to do too much and not give some traction to engage readers. Meaning me. It was too long, you have to make it worth wild to read. More had to be given. It started well enough, the emotional build up of Isabella/Elaina running from her keeper, kidnapper, abuser, s3x trafficker, boyfriend, husband, or mob drug overlord of 10yrs. Take your pick of Viktor b/c *spoiler alert* nothing was confirmed or denied in this bloated story. I have my own ideas of him. Murd3rer. This was longggg. 400 pages to guess at... and don't get me started on the hot girl summer camp away in Spain at a hotel. At least in scary movies the big bad attacks or lurks. How old were these immature juvenile coworkers of hers? Drinking. Hooking up like it's one party after another. They appeared like hormonal teenagers. Gossiping. Fawning over who was hot and who wasn't. Again. How old are they? My guess, younger than 25. Another thing that wasn't shared. The characters vernacular was too cliché. And how was nobody in this group Spanish. But they're in Spain, right. Orlando was Puerto Rican. Why mention Rhianna and her 'afro' hair? Weird. I think Orlando was older since he had been working at this hotel for almost 20yrs. You do the math.😮💨😮💨😮💨🧮
How did the beginning end up in this weird upside place? I wanted to stop reading it. I thought it would get better. It didn't.🙄 I don't like leaving negative reviews but this one was a disappointment. I'm sorry. It didn't work for me. The synopsis was misleading. And why did Elaina keep watching her coworkers engage in their extracurricular activities? 3 separate occasions with 4 different couples. You can get away with one maybe two instances, but that many.🤦♀️ Look away. Go away. Don't just stand there and get turned on by it. Ew. And the big bad. There was only drops of it scattered throughout. From that type of trauma, I don't think Elaina would be looking to do anything with anyone considering the mistrust, the horror of her former life.🚩🚩 Read the TWs for one particular scene.🚩🚩 This read like two different stories infused together that made no sense. It was frustrating. And there's a cliffhanger.😒😒 Suspense? Only the beginning. World building. Not exactly. Romance. Nope. The writing was there in the beginning but once in Spain, with the hotel drama, it lost its way. If you want to read it that's up to you. Good luck. The book cover is nice. Happy reading.*•>§<•*🌸🌸🌸🌸
Overall rating: 2.5 stars rounded up to 3.
🛎️🏰Thank you to Ms Phoenix and Booksprout. This is my honest opinion on the story I read.🏰🛎️
I went into this book without knowing anything about it. I loved the cover so much that I just couldn't resist picking it up. When I first started reading, I was like man just another mafia type romance where she's married off to some wicked man and was just going to stop there. But I'm so glad that I didn't. It wasn't what I was expecting. There is depth to what El goes through and the fear, doubt and pain that she feels. I love that she had strength in herself to get out of the situation that she could no longer tolerate. I'm glad that she had Iris she could turn to. I think that the old woman did more for her then she truly understands. I really like May, who she meets at the B&B in Bahia De Acantilado. She gives Elaina the ability for feel proud of herself. To feel confident in what she is working toward and to make the full attempt into finding herself, to see who she can really become. While in this town she meets some amazing people. There are the girls that she becomes friends with: Tiana, her roommate, Jess, Tess, Rhianna, Paige and Minnie. There are also the mean girls they all work with: Clara and Kelsey. Then all the amazingly handsome guys that she will meet along this adventure. There's Domenico, Orlando, Blaise, Dean, Marco, and Corban. As I was reading along, I thought dang she's got a nice group of men, this would an amazing Why Choose but it's not. At least not yet?!?!?! The thing that messes with me the most was the fact that she seemed to be stuck in a place that had the same kind of people she was running from. Like really this is her life, these kinds of people. There are many things that happen and I don't want to spoil it for anyone so I'm not going into specifics. My only wish is that she would've found someone that she could really be open and honest with. Someone that she can tell her truths to and that they would still pick her side. I think she needs someone like that in her corner. It does end on a cliffhanger and I'm just fiending for book 2!!!.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
The beginning of this book opens with a rain filled night bolt for freedom. Elaina/Isabelle is escaping a life that through almost 400 pages we never really get told what exactly that was. Small flashbacks give only a glimpse into the nightmare Elaina escaped. This is not where the main focus is on. For most of this book it was like a summer camp for adults in a fancy castle where the employees acted like horny teenagers. This was a slow burn for knowledge - was Elaina a victim of a sex trafficking ring or was she just a captive of a cruel oligarch or mafia? Who exactly was Viktor? What was the purpose of the blueprints she stole? None of this is explicit. By the end I was expecting to get some answers only to have more given and an open ended conclusion that was anything but.
The writing was solid - great descriptions of the setting and people. The characters are likeable but everything is incredibly secretive. We don't even get inner monologue to explain what exactly she was escaping. The summer camp vibe was overbearing. Elaina likes Orlando, a brooding hulk of a man. But 3x, yes 3x Elaina sees someone else having sex and stays to watch. By the 2nd time it became more creeper-ish than voyeur - especially since the guy she was watching was a jerk who kept coming on to her. When Elaina and Orlando finally do get intimate someone barges in. I expected them to shout "I made it to 3rd base!"
In the end, the secrecy (even from the reader) left too many questions. I'm not sure if I will read the next book as I do not want to be strung along for another 400 pages with nothing answered or solved. I got this book as a review copy for free and have left the review on my own volition. I guess I was expecting something with more urgency with how the book opened. I am disappointed because I thought there was so much potential for an explosive meeting and showdown. What was delivered was more of a fizzle with the likelihood that there could be more....
This book started off quickly, immediately drawing me in. It was mysterious and tense, making it clear the FMC was rushing to escape something dark. Throughout the book, you get glimpses into Elaina's life through the little bit she says and the nightmares she has. It's enough to start painting a picture, but not so much that you still remain invested in trying to figure out all that's happened to her and why she's in hiding.
We see enough to know that her story is heartbreaking and it makes it so easy to root for her. The fact that she got away (at least temporarily) and is building a wonderful life for herself where she can be happy and flourish is so amazing to watch. I enjoyed the interactions between her and her friends, as well as her and Orlando. He clearly has some traumatic history he's working through as well, so together they're trying to open up and trust each other. They're both flawed and both accept it. It's beautiful.
The main thing I didn't like, which is just personal opinion of course, is that everyone is obsessed with Elaina. I'm not a fan of stories where literally every guy is tripping over themselves to be with the same girl. I get it, she's cool and pretty, but it just seems wildly unrealistic to me. However, it was done well in this book, so I didn't mind it so much.
Amara does a wonderful job with her characters. You feel instant attraction and allure to certain characters, while the hate is strong for others. It's always a blast when an author can truly make you feel for the characters, to where you're either rooting for them or praying for their demise.
I can't wait for the second book and I'll definitely be adding Amara Phoenix to the list of authors I keep a lookout for.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
I took a chance and read this book, intrigued by the blurb. And honestly, wow! – I'm so glad I did.
Amara does an exceptional job at capturing the reader’s attention with her detailed descriptions (that I adore!), her unique characters (that left me smiling like a moron!), and captivating themes that highlighted just how far the main character was willing to go to change her fate. I was instantly hooked from the very beginning. (Thanks, Iris!)
The story follows the tender-hearted and resilient Elaina, as she ventures through a major change in her life. Soon after, we are introduced to the mysterious and attention-grabbing Orlando! From there, emotions fly.
Where Shadows Whisper is filled with light-hearted moments that perfectly blend with the more serious themes. I loved watching Elaina grow and the relationships she formed with those around her, (especially Tiana!)
One of the best books I’ve read so far this year, and I can’t wait for the second one to release! Well done, Amara, on this debut! You’ve knocked it out of the ballpark.
This book got under my skin in the best way. The setting is a hotel on the cliffs of Northern Spain. The description of it is so vivid you can practically taste the sea air.
The tension builds beautifully from page one with our MFC, Elaina wounded and desperately trying to escape her past. As I learned more about her story, I couldn’t stop my heart from breaking for her. As for the enigmatic Orlando, the MMC, let’s just say he’s the kind of man who will ruin you for anyone else. The chemistry between the two characters is slow burn and smoldering with spice that literally steams off the page.
It’s a dark but emotional read, with writing that feels almost poetic at times. By the end, I was whispering “just one more chapter” even though it was after 2 a.m.
My only complaint is the cliffhanger at the end. Why, oh why did you do this to us Amara? I need to know what happens next. Please don’t leave it too long until book 2 is published. I’m not sure I could wait too long.
Amara really knows how to pull you into a story and makes you feel it - every emotion, every moment. Following life of Elaina, navigating and running away and off grid from the life she never choose, meets the distant, brooding Orlando in one of her job assingnment. Things take a different turn, amidst configuring her feelings and emotions with how Orlando treated her, where the tension deepens. I love how the author potrays the mysterious vibe thoroughout. How the story builds keeps my patience off the edge - it keeps me fidgeting to know what happens next 😂. And the people in the staff village gives the life and vibes to the story. The whole book feels like it’s wrapped in fog and secrets—beautifully written. It’s haunting, emotional, and hard to put down. Eager to know what happen next.
After finishing Where Shadows Whisper, I was speechless. The author’s writing was sensational. Though a slow burn, the story was gripping from the very beginning. Her descriptions were spot on, immersing the readers into the book. The mysterious journey of Elaina and why she was on the run continues throughout the book, a main plot point that keeps the readers interested.
Though the main characters were Elaina and Orlando, the author does a good job at developing the rest of the secondary cast within the book. Every character had a personality and each shone through for them.
What I admired most was how the author wrote the spicy scenes—there were a few layered in and though graphic and opened-door, it was not distasteful or “too much”. Readers need to remember that this is a duet so the story doesn’t end here. I look forward to reading Book 2 in the near future. Highly recommended to those who enjoy a mystery, slow burn romance with tasteful open-door scenes.
This novel is a romantic suspense story with dark, intense themes. The plot is incredibly unique, fresh and layered. It certainly kept me turning the pages! The characters feel convincing and the steamy scenes are especially well written. They're sensual without being overdone and full of genuine emotion that enhances the story rather than distracting from it. While the beginning has a fair bit of exposition, once the story finds its rhythm, it’s utterly captivating. By the time I reached the end, I was frantically looking for more. It wrapped up so powerfully that I didn’t want to accept it ended. If you enjoy romance blended with suspense, emotional depth, and a touch of darkness, this is absolutely worth reading.
This is officially my favorite read of 2025, it was that good! The writing is beautiful. The characters come alive on the page. The setting is atmospheric. The tension and slow burn had me squirming in the best way. Elaina's journey had me clutching my heart and rooting for her from the start. The story builds gradually and doesn't rush anything so you feel like you're right there with the characters experiencing it all. I'm so excited for book 2.
Decided to read more indie books this year and a friend recommended this book. I'm so happy she did as I now have another favorite to add to my all time top reads
I was captivated by Where Shadows Whisper right from the beginning. It is definitely a page turner!
I was deeply invested in the main character, Elaine's story. The slow burn romance, the mystery of Orlando's backstory, and the dynamics of the hotel employees kept me hooked! Elaina's story has a little bit of everything, as she runs from her past and starts to develop a sense of belonging. Just when you think things are settling down for her...the past comes back to haunt her. I can't wait to read the second book, talk about a cliffhanger!
The book starts with a dramatic escape, but most of the story feels like a slow-burn summer camp for adults, with secretive characters and little explanation of Elaina’s past or the stakes. While the writing is solid and the setting is well described, too much remains unexplained, and some scenes felt unnecessarily voyeuristic. By the end, questions are left unanswered, making it hard to stay invested. I expected more urgency and payoff from the explosive opening, but the story fizzled instead.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Wow what a debut. I’ve spent the last couple of days opening my kindle at every opportunity so that I could keep reading. There was bucket loads of tension, drama, suspense, and spice. The author is skilled in her descriptions whether it’s drawing the reader into the setting or characters. I haven’t read many romantic suspense, but I definitely will from now on. I have more questions than answers from this first book, I can’t wait to continue the story in book 2. Congratulations on a fantastic debut novel.
