This is the first book in the Winterborne series and, for me, it’s a flawed book. There are honestly some really well thought out moments, such as a magical kingdom maybe not wanting some, in essence, foreign heir to come in and take their throne. Maybe the king and queen of a racially pure kingdom aren’t in favor of their mixed blood heir … but there’s a problem with that. The king and queen have known Henric and his sister all their lives, so why are they, only now, showing signs of cruelty and malice? Where was this when all five of them lived on Earth, watched movies, ate popcorn, had holidays? And were the king and queen absent from their kingdom the whole time, or just on Earth holidays?
Overall, I think this book is rough and needs both more polishing for the writing, and many more connecting moments to have scenes make sense. The pace is fast and the plot is all over the place.

A lot of information and world building comes at readers fast, just like it's quickly unfolding to Henric and Audrey, who were just average teenagers until they weren't. The author weaves in many types of representation throughout this fantastic journey, and he leaves readers wanting more of the tale. I look forward to the next installment!

Winterborne is a story centred on Henric, a teenager who lives in constant grief over the loss of his mother, with the vision of her corpse haunting his mind.
He leads a normal life with his sister and father, although he feels that something in his life is missing. The only thing that makes him feel truly alive are the dreams that flood his mind with an ice dragon, which becomes his faithful companion. After suffering a violent attack at home, it is revealed that his father is a prince of a kingdom called Winterborne, and that both he and his sister have royal blood, despite being of mixed heritage.
From the very beginning, they were separated and kept hidden, as his father had fled his political duties to marry the woman he loved – a decision his grandparents openly rejected, even going so far as to fake his death.
Henric is assigned a guard, Kellenen, and a tutor, Hundarian, to teach him the history of the place, and the attraction between them is almost instantaneous. Although his ambitions may jeopardise the bond between them.
I must say that the story has a good premise and interesting lore, but the execution… leaves a lot to be desired. I can understand that the story is told from Henric’s POV, and that he is an impulsive character and an unreliable narrator, but it lacks the time needed to give greater weight to what is happening, and scenes that tie the plot together. Because some plot twists and the protagonists’ behaviour come across as very inconsistent and implausible.
I also felt that the world-building was lacking, or rather, the development of the kingdom’s customs and beliefs.
I think there are many aspects that need developing and that should have been refined in this story, but I hope that will improve in the next book.

If you’re in search of a gripping, rousing story that moves fast and takes you places you didn’t know was possible, this is for you! I love a secret world so was happy to see it in here. I love a magic world hidden in the real one and seeing our characters travel from the one to the other. These characters are able to swap out our real, boring, non-magical world for this magical fantasy world; I just like to see it (and want to experience it for myself lol). Netto has a way with words that will easily bring you into the book. His characters are lively and make mistakes and have desires — very much like ordinary people. I didn’t like Henric at the start but I grew to understand him because I probably would be angry and have that urge to burn the world down.
We didn’t get much of Audrey, Henric’s younger sister as the book is under 300 pages and it’s action focused so while she had some lines she was still mostly in the dark. I’d be interested in finding out more about her, her desires and if, like Henric, she has any magical abilities. There’s always that risk that you run when you have low page count — you tend to focus on one thing in particular — and in here it’s action.
As I’ve said multiple times I’m a big fan of magic and magic systems in fantasy books, it’s something I love and honestly I can’t remember the last time I read a non-magical fantasy book because I always want to see magic in fantasy settings. Netto shows us enough magic to keep us entertained but also hides a bunch which is good. Politics is a big part of the story which I liked. Politics is interesting since you can approach it in various ways. Good or bad, whether the main character wants it or not. In here Henric doesn’t show interest most of the time, which is understandable. All in all, this book is for the thrill-seekers and dragon fans! The dragon scenes we got were good and I liked how it appeared on the cover.

Winterborne was refreshing in that it centers a male protagonist and stays committed to his perspective throughout. I enjoyed how the worldbuilding mirrors Henric’s emotional arc — the push and pull of claiming a crown, navigating ancient magic, political intrigue, dragons, infighting, and a society obsessed with pure‑blood lineage. The early chapters soared for me as J.D. Netto eased me into Henric’s Normal World and then whisked us both into the frozen realm of his Hero’s Journey.
This is clearly the first book in a trilogy, and the pacing reflects that. It’s a story that takes its time, laying groundwork for future books rather than rushing to reveal everything at once. I have the distinct feeling that the quiet moments matter just as much as the epic ones — that there are clues tucked into the stillness we don’t yet recognize as clues.

Between stilted writing and a chaotic plot, this book is a mess. It's fast, though, I'll give it that. The author doesn't give much in the way of exposition, especially since the book is from Henrich's POV, and his dad isn't interested in explaining things, and the people around him either tell him what they want him to know, or tell him what best suits their purposes. And for that, it works.
But because of this, so much is left out, especially in the final chapter.
What? Why, when, and how, please. Is this a vision? Is this the first chapter of book three somehow lumped in? The book wants to get to the dessert course so badly it never let me enjoy any of the other courses, and took away plates and silverware before I'd had more than a bite. I'm sorry, this book is a solid miss. I will not be looking for or reading the sequels.
But because of this, so much is left out, especially in the final chapter.

But trust me: once you get past that initial setup and hit the heart of the story, you will not be able to put it down. It’s an incredibly fast read, and it wraps up on an absolute killer of a cliffhanger that literally had me screaming for the next book.
What I loved most was the vibes. It beautifully blends a dark, gothic fantasy atmosphere with a deeply character-driven plot. Instead of non-stop, mindless action—though there are still plenty of high-stakes moments—the book focuses heavily on mood, raw emotion, and the characters' struggles with grief and family secrets.
By the final page, it just leaves you desperate for more. More of this world, more of the slow-burning connection between the MMC and his love interests, and honestly... just give me more dragons!
If you love dark fantasy with deep characters and a plot that yanks you right in, you definitely need to add this to your TBR.

The beginning builds the characters as well as the world and as each new chapter begins, the characters' lives unravel. Secrets slowly start to bubble to the surface creating more questions which lead to more secrets. Who can we trust now? This was a bit of a slow burn for me and at times the story seemed to go in circles; however, once the main plot was established this is a page turner of a book with an epic ending to set up the next in the series.

I received an advance listening copy of Winterborne from Podium in exchange for my honest review.
Winterborne has an intriguing premise with ancient magic, dragons, political intrigue and a frozen fantasy world that immediately caught my attention. I also liked that the worldbuilding unfolds gradually rather than overwhelming you with information all at once.
That said, I found the story jumped around quite a bit, especially in the beginning, which made it difficult for me to fully settle into the world and connect with the characters. As the story progressed, things became clearer, but I never felt completely immersed in the way I'd hoped.
There are some interesting twists, and I can definitely see the potential for where the series is heading. While it wasn't a favourite for me, I still enjoyed the overall journey and think readers who enjoy character-driven fantasy with court politics, hidden identities and dragons may have a different experience.

Winterborne
Epic! This fast paced fantasy took my breath away! I was hooked from the start and with so much going on I never knew what was going to happen next.
From deadly political to confusing romantic entanglements, to magical dragons this book had everything!
This new world intrigued me and I wanted to know more! There was so much in here that I can’t wait to uncover more of especially with the way things ended!!
Then there was the characters! Henric was a character that I could get behind! He was someone who was relatable and you couldn’t help but root for!
The other characters were hard to figure out! I never knew who was on whose side with all the secrets and betrayals!
If you love epic fantasy, deadly secrets, political intrigue, dragons, magic, forbidden romance, morally grey, truth/lies, twists, and so much more then don’t miss this first book in this exciting new series!

“Was I triggering something ancient — or fulfilling something inevitable?”
Easiest 5 stars to give a book! Winterborne is such an insane ride!
I was absolutely sobbing one page and then gasping in shock the next, and then back to sobbing, so to say this took me on an emotional rollercoaster might be a great way to describe this book!
I loved the dragons in this book and how Escurion comes to exist! The world building in this is also immaculate! The ending though?! Uh hello how long do I need to wait for the next book because I’m not sure if I’ll have the patience!

For a first book in a series this has real potential to be a great trilogy! This first book is action packed and filled to the brim with world building and character introductions (can confirm I did get a bit confused with all the new names). I haven’t read a fantasy that stems around Dragons for a while and this was such a refreshing take on it 🐉 I’m greedy and think that this book could’ve been longer so it didn’t feel like the ending was rushed. But I am definitely intrigued by all the characters Henry is definitely a headstrong, no fuss kinda character and I love how Audrey is very much reserved but also full of so much power within her. Also we love Henry our Bi king 👑 Also the ending?! I need the next book already in my hands!

This one sounded right up my alley. It has dragons, an ice world, political intrigue, hidden identity, and is a queer fantasy. I was also excited to have a male MC as many of the books I have read lately revolve around a female. But this didn't live up to my expectations sadly.
It has a good premise and I think it could have been hashed out better. The writing was choppy. The story was very heavy on Henric’s internal thoughts and I lost interest often. The scenes didn't unfold smoothly instead there was a lot of jumping around and a few things didn't make sense. I think if this was edited a bit more and transitions thought out better it could have been a lot more enjoyable.

An interesting and somewhat unexpected darker fantasy story, with a lot of flawed and fairly unlikable characters. The first chapters were quite confusing, although they made a lot of sense once the story was further along. Henric was all over the place as far as empathetic thoughts and actions were concerned, which fit the coming of age struggles and his suddenly changing circumstances, but he could also be horribly cold and calculating. The bisexual representation was excellent. There is quite a cliffhanger.

I really liked the premise and especially liked the frost dragons but I struggled to get into this one. I can appreciate the story building around a family that left their world and entered ours to raise children then later return and the kids are introduced to magic. It was rather impressive but heavy on an inner monologue of the MC and it just lost my interest a bit.
I liked how it ended and actually loved the character arc because he really grew into this leader after being pretty unsure of himself for so long.

In total, I enjoyed reading Winterborne, though I struggled with some parts, and I had to force myself not to DNF in the first chapters. At the end, though, I was glad that I had continued reading.
Winterborne was darker than I expected it to be, which was positive for me, and I especially liked the bisexual representation.
I think the book (or the continuation in book 2) offers a lot of room for more worldbuilding.

J. D. Netto is writing the bisexual fantasies we all need. The characters are unique and memorable. The plot twists were really good. However, what sets this book apart is the writing style. Netto masterfully puts the readers in the shoes of the protagonist, allowing us to discover in real time. At times, it’s a confusing, but I believe that’s intentional because WHO WOULDNT BE CONFUSED AFTER BEING RIPPED INTO A FANTASY WORLD HAUNTED BY A DEAD WINTER DRAGON?! I had a great time reading it, and I’m excited to see where and what Netto does next. 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼

This one is hard for me. It had many elements that I enjoyed but I felt that at the end I wanted more. I think it would have done justice to have 50-100 pages more of dialogue, expansion, and expression. Maybe I’m just a bit disappointed it went by so fast. Loved the concepts, the world building, struggles, romance, and twists but maybe needed just a touch more of all of it. Though i absolutely would continue to the next book! The world is interesting and the characters have heart.

That was what I was thinking pretty much the whole book. I was sucked into the story immediately. When I say immediately, I mean by the first page.
So much happened in the first chapter and babyyyy!!! IT KEPT GOING!
I’m sure I felt the same way Henric did each time he found out a new secret that his family was keeping from him.

This was okay. I felt as though there was a lot of potential that wasn't followed through on. I also feel like it circles back on itself a lot and I found a lot of the prose tedious. Parts of it were very interesting but as a whole, it just felt a little boring.

Unfortunately this book did not hit the mark for me. I believe this is a YA book, yet there was a sex scene. It may not have been a very descriptive scene, but you can tell what was going on. I also felt that the story moved too slow for me. It ends with a cliffhanger, as it’s the start of a series, but I will not be continuing. I was so hopeful for this one. Thank you to the publisher, author, and Colored Pages book tour for the physical copy.
