THE SHIFTING SANDS OF TIME

As the capital of Chang’an prepares for a grand celebration, An Lushan and his henchmen plot to wreak havoc within the city. In their clutches is Mergen, who has surrendered his heart to the heavenly demon in order to discover his plans. At night, Lu Xu walks in his dreams, the two becoming more deeply entwined than either bargained for.

Li Jinglong believes the exorcists can stop An Lushan—and perhaps even strike down the black jiao Xie Yu, a far greater threat to the Divine Land. But when the mission unravels, Li Jinglong will put everything on the line to protect Hongjun from the demonic forces that would corrupt him—even if it means invoking a power that could spell his own destruction.

~Everything we’re doing now is
merely a foolish attempt to deceive ourselves. Fate cannot be changed. We
are still headed toward our predestined calamity.~

Li Jinglong, the man you are.

Yes, we are finally back on track, I can wholeheartedly love this danmei once again without any complaints. I'm genuinely so happy.

After volume 3 and a little of volume 4, while I still loved this series, I felt a slight disappointment. However, this volume really exceeded my expectations and delivered immensely.

The plot is approaching its climax, and there is an abundance of intense action scenes happening throughout.
There are numerous battles involving various clans, species, and factions, each more thrilling than the last.
The action scenes are executed with exceptional skill, pulling you into the story at a rapid pace.

Hongjun in this volume reverts once again to his lovable, naive, and adorable self, which I find absolutely endearing.
Finally, he begins to think more strategically, showing signs of maturity. He starts to trust Li Jinglong completely, without any doubts, and begins to communicate more effectively. Huray, that's all I wanted from him.

Li Jinglong truly is the man, a man of honor and unwavering devotion.
He is the most commendable love interest I have ever read about, consistently demonstrating adoration for Hongjun.
He worships the ground Hongjun walks on, and his loyalty is unwavering. He can be relied upon in every perilous situation, confidently overcoming obstacles and emerging victorious.
I am so proud of him, he has gained incredible confidence since the beginning of the series.

The relationship between Hongjun and Li Jinglong remains as wonderful and heartfelt as ever.
These two love each other so passionately that they resemble a married couple so deeply attached that they are exasperating, yet one cannot help but still swoon at their displays of affection.

Now, Lu Xu, my favorite character, has become even more snarky and witty.
He is such a delight to read about, consistently delivering clever and sharp lines.
Since his first appearance, he has never disappointed me, and I admire his sense of self-worth, pride, and independence.
He refuses to let anyone walk all over him, and I find that incredibly admirable.
I also love his deadpan delivery, his humor and dry wit bring a lot of fun to the story.

Mergen surprised me in this volume.
I was shocked to discover that he is not the gentle, noble wolf I initially thought but actually a mischievous, rebellious one.
I did not expect his true personality to be so bold and unruly, it caught me completely off guard.
Nonetheless, he remains somewhat dumb, which balances his character.

Lu Xu and Mergen's relationship is portrayed as that of a bickering married couple who don't want to let the other win in anything.
In this volume, every couple seems to embody that married vibe, full of playful arguments and teasing.
Honestly, if I didn't love Lu Xu as much as I do, I might not have enjoyed their interactions quite so much since I tend not to like the bickering dynamic.

Qiu Yongsi finally receives the spotlight he truly deserves, and my admiration for him only deepens.
His backstory is compelling, and this volume further elevates my view of him.
I am eagerly awaiting the ending, especially because of a spoiler I saw about who he ends up with, I am extremely excited to see how it unfolds.

In conclusion, this volume was incredibly fun and captivating, and I loved every single moment of it.
I can’t wait to read volume 6.

4.9/5 🌟

Perhaps it's because I'm biased and Li Jinglong has become (in my delulu world) such reliable, sexy, hubby material, but I just LOVED this volume so much! Li Jinglong is such a badass! It didn't evoke the intense tears I had felt from vol 3, but the adventure and imagery packed in every scene was so enticing, I just chewed each word slowly as I slowly digested this volume! It was one of those reads I didn't want to read quickly because I was enjoying every delectable moment!

"'I'm staying with you,' Hongjun said, breaking the silence. 'I'll follow you no matter where you go.'
'The abyss, then,' Li Jinglong said. 'Do you dare to follow me even there?'
Hongjun nodded, and they smiled at each other, a gentle warmth blooming between them. Whether it was traveling to the ends of the earth or descending to the deepest depths of hell, they would always be together, never to part."

One thing I really really love about this novel, and many of Fei Tian Ye Xiang's novels are the relationships and bonds he makes between his two main protagonist. I love the fierce trust, love, warmth, and gentleness there is between Li Jinglong and Hongjun! Their devoted love and yearning for each other is so beautiful. I'll add another beautiful quote of the abyss scene at the end.

These two major arcs have got to be some of my favorites in the series, thus far. The epic battle scene of Xie Yu and An Lushan getting their ass handed to them, and at the Dragon Tower adventures that moved this plot so well.
The plot really unfolded.
So many possibilities.
Many questions left to answer.
I love how this last arc didn't drag as long as it could have. I really like the pacing of this volume. It was very well done.

Side characters: Lu Xu and Mergen.... Hahaha! Need I say more? That whole bit with the dream threw me off, but wtf Mergen! You're being an asshole now after you got ass? Sir... You're little deer Lu is waiting for you. Dammit! He even got injured by you to save you! Take responsibility!

Zhao Zilong! That plot twist made me literally throw my book, my jaw drop to the floor, with tears of idk dry eyes from lack of blinking or utter sadness!
Furthermore, Yongsi's relationship with Hongjun AND Xie Yu blew my mind!
As did Xie Yu's background!
Wow!!
So incredible! What story telling!!

Ashina Adarvan shined and I screamed when he launched that arrow shattering the hour glass!! I ship him and Yongsi now hahahahahaha....

Yongsi... The desire I have to touch his beautiful scales! You and Hongjun need a brotherly hug. 🫂

That plot twist at the end of Li Jinglong's roll...is he really not the reincarnated Acalanatha? I'd like to think so because even the greatest dragon Yi Ming called him that. Perhaps Li Jinglong needs to do a few things in order to be accepted. Perhaps he needs to fully be ready to let go of Hongjun in order for Acalanatha to accept him.

I think Li Jinglong really shined in this volume and I'm fangirling so hard!

"'For helping me rebuild the time barrier, the Great Tang Department of Demonic Exorcism has my sincere gratitude. Empress Nüwa was right: Humans may be small and weak but they possess more might than any other living creature.'
Hearing these words from a primordial dragon shook Hongjun to the core. Although only half the blood flowing through his veins was human, he nevertheless felt a surge of pride. He glanced at Li Jinglong.
Li Jinglong was the only ordinary mortal in the Department of Exorcism-and he was wa also the only one among them who'd per severed throughout this arduous journey without once admitting defeat. Even before he had the heart lamp, when he had no spiritual power at all, Li Jinglong had never faltered in his conviction, despite encountering more obstacles than ar anyone else."

I'm so excited to what is going to happen next! The war against An Lushan is really raging on... And Xie Yu is still out there, healing from his injuries, gathering demonic energy.

This volume cooked!

Only FTYX would add such whole ass beautiful scene while simultaneously showing how horny these two are for each other. Lol 😂
UGH! It's just them and the world! 😭💕 Never not be together, please! True love!

This volume is a total whirlwind. With the An Lushan rebellion looming over Chang’an, the tension is suffocating in the best way possible. This installment really focuses on the lengths Li Jinglong will go to protect Hongjun, and seeing his desperation against the demonic forces was absolutely heart-wrenching.
I especially loved the focus on Mergen and Lu Xu. Their connection through dreams and the "shifting sands of time" theme added such a beautiful, melancholic layer to the story. That being said, I really need more of their arguments! Please, just give me more banter between those two!

Volume 5 actually fixed some of the plot holes I felt were lingering in Volume 4, and I’m hoping Volume 6 continues that trend. My only minor gripe is that I wish we’d seen more of the future Hongjun witnessed and a deeper look into how he felt afterward.
Happy Reading!

ANY SPOILERS IN FUTURE VOLUMES = AUTOMATIC BLOCK

✨ SPOILER WARNING! 🏹

MERGEN!!! 😭 I didn't think he would change so quickly or become like that. Lu Xu really saved the day by pulling him out of all that resentment energy! Also, I never would have thought these two would actually end up together. For some reason, I just didn't see it happening, but now I'm so glad they’re "together" (in a sense, lol).

The internal conflict Li Jinglong faces regarding his own power—basically telling Hongjun, "I’ll destroy myself to save you"—really hurt. Sure, it can be seen as romantic, but Hongjun clearly doesn't want him to actually destroy himself! The emotional stakes are just getting way too real.

PEEEEEEROOOO ME HAN ENCANTADO TODOS DIOS MÍOO, pero like muchiismo.

Tengo que hablar de Li Jinglong porque omg, he is my everything.

Li Jinglong is one of my favorite wife guys. Never change.

I will say this volume feels a bit filler-y? But, it’s kind of necessary filler in some ways. Like, we need PLOT and to get that we need content and context. So, this volume serves that purpose.

There’s also whatever is happening between Lu Xu and Mergen??? It’s giving “messy couple” vibes. But, that story line peters out by the final act of this volume. So, TBC on that.

We also get an unexpected BETRAYAL.

It never comes from your friends, does it? No, it’s always the talking carp spirit with human legs and a big mouth. Or, however that quote goes. Very sad.

Anyway.

I’m looking forward to the conclusion of this series—which I believe is forthcoming? I feel like the stage is set for an epic showdown~

3.5 ⭐️

I have slightly better feelings toward Li Jinglong now, but frankly, I’m still choosing to ignore his presence.

Next, I was initially so confused about Mergen’s situation because I’d completely forgotten how the previous book ended. But him and Lu Xu? They genuinely left me speechless in this volume.

That said, the latter half of the book was honestly a mess.

I don't know if I liked all the time bending at the end 😬 What's certain is that calamity waits upon us for the next book.
