The city of Aravell is in peril, plagued by a deadly blackmist that kills all it touches, and reapers who roam the streets, stealing magic from innocent children in their thirst for power. Seventeen-year-old Viridia Solace has trained for years to hunt these reapers but their ranks keep growing, led by the man who murdered her parents: the Reaper Priest.
When the Priest's most loyal follower, Reeve Ashton, is captured, he offers Viri a chance to avenge her parents . . . for a price. She knows better than to bargain with a reaper, let alone this reaper, but his offer is too good to resist.
Soon she's breaking him out of prison, colluding with his crew of magic thieves, and following him deep into the blackmist forest in search of an ancient legend, all so they can stop the Reaper Priest’s plot to doom the city. Viri is staking her life on Reeve's plan, but how can she trust a silver-tongued criminal to keep his word? And how can she trust her own heart when a buried secret could shatter everything?

- overview - lynette. noni. never. misses. EVER. i'm only a few weeks into the new year, but i can already tell this one's going to be a top read of 2026. but seriously?!? this woman is giving us hit after hit and i am eating up every second.
this book is filled to the brim with the most mouth watering yearning. there are scenes in shadow reaper that will simultaneously smash your heart open and give you a warm hug. plus those plot twists?? what am i supposed to do with myself now?!? i'd like to think that i'm fairly good at predicting book plot twists, but this one got me realllll good. *throws kindle across the room*
the characters... oh my lord, these are my babies. viri and reeve's relationship is so genuine. this book perfectly weaves dark themes while still being an easy book to loose yourself in. like, even after everything these characters have been through, it never becomes a toxic relationship, which is the biggest red flag in most romantasies.
did i mention there's also a tiny fluffy bunny named walnut? 😭😭😭

♡ huge thanks to netgalley and the publisher for an arc - all thoughts are my own ♡
“dark YA pitched as SHADOW AND BONE meets The Vampire Diaries (sans vampires), about a young reaper hunter who must conspire with her childhood friend-turned-mortal enemy and his crew of illegal magic thieves to stop a deadly foe from a plot to steal untold power-and doom their world”
You would think that after reading 12, TWELVE, books by Lynette Noni then I couldn’t be surprised by her plot twists. Well you are wrong, BECAUSE I WAS SURPRISED. IN FACT IM IN DISBELIEF. BECAUSE WHAT?! I honestly feel so stupid and now I absolutely NEED to reread this book and see the foreshadowing moments because I KNOW THEY ARE THERE. Okay now time for the actual review, but first we have to back this up.
When Shadow Reaper was announced it quickly became my most anticipated read of 2026. Not only because Lynette Noni is my favorite author but also because it sounded SO INTERESTING. So I am not kidding when I say that I CRIED getting an email saying I got approved for the arc and I am also not kidding when I say that I dropped absolutely everything for this book and I am so glad I did BECAUSE OH MY GOSH.
This book not only met my very high expectations but it EXCEEDED THEM. I was so immersed into the world of Elverdine Isle to the point where time actually had no meaning. When I say that I was obsessed, I WAS OBSESSED. Every waking moment for the past three days has been spent reading this book. In addition to the world, Lynette Noni also delivered on the characters that you just can’t help but loving. Like tell me why I knew Reeve for one page but I already loved him as if I had known him for 100 pages. I EVEN LOVED A FREAKING BUNNY(dare I say the best part of the book). Lastly, as I said previously, this book did not HOLD BACK WITH THE PLOT TWISTS. The ending shook me to my core and I don’t think I’ll ever be the same. I might even dare to say that this plot twist was crazier than the one in the prison healer(and trust me, that is saying something). I should probably stop yapping now but just remember “Never Bargain with a Reaper.”
THANK YOU SO MUCH TO NETGALLEY AND THE PUBLISHERS FOR GIFTING ME THIS ARC! It truly meant the world to me😭
Lynette Noni does it again! 𝘚𝘩𝘢𝘥𝘰𝘸 𝘙𝘦𝘢𝘱𝘦𝘳 is an explosive young adult duology opener full of twists and turns, magical adventure, and charming romance.
Viridia hunts reapers in her quest for revenge, desperate to locate the Reaper Priest responsible for her parents' deaths. When his comrade, Reeve, is captured, she risks a dangerous bargain to gain access to the murderer. As conflicting feelings develop for Reeve, her former childhood friend, and a world-ending conspiracy is discovered, she'll have to decide who to trust - and learn how to trust herself.
Noni is the queen of crafting charming young adult fantasy with characters so lovely and full of life that they jump out of the pages. I instantly adored the cast of characters, and the found family elements are beautifully penned.
Viri is a compelling character whose backstory is tragic and plays a large role in her empowering growth. Reeve's confidence is rather endearing, especially as his body language reveals care for Viri. He's alluring and fierce yet sweet and gentle, and his sense of humor had me laughing out loud. Viri and Reeve's dynamic was addictive, and their story should be the blueprint for the he falls first trope! The friendships are heartwarming, and there's even an adorable fluffy sidekick!
𝘚𝘩𝘢𝘥𝘰𝘸 𝘙𝘦𝘢𝘱𝘦𝘳 is magical and filled to the brim with addictive wanderlust. It's a book you'll stay up all night devouring because you can't put it down, and once you finish, you'll be up all night pondering the gut-wrenching cliffhanger. Lynette Noni will be holding me captive until the sequel is in my hands - I am desperate to see what happens next!
Thank you to NetGalley and Random House for the advance reading copy!
A whole new ya fantasy series by Lynette Noni?? Oh I am SO ready
"The story follows a young reaper hunter who must conspire with her childhood friend turned mortal enemy and his crew of illegal magic thieves to stop a deadly foe from steaing untold power ─ and dooming their World!"
I never review things but I managed to snag a proof at YALC. So it deserves a review.
friends-> enemies -> lovers
It was really easy to read, the world building was really compelling but easy to understand and follow. kinda gave me RWBY vibes with the hunters and the artifacts. There are so many lovable characters and I will be honest for the first half of the book I definitely prefer some of the side characters to the main protag, but she found her feet as the book went along.
Also would die for walnut just saying.
The story kept me engaged and the more I read the harder it was to put down. I did not expect the ending...well.. did one bit but not the reveal at the end. usually, I am pretty good at guessing, so it did catch me off guard. now I need to wait like 2 years for the next one 😭😭
Shadow Reaper by Lynette Noni Release Date:June 2nd Rating:⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Age rating:15+ Spice:none
Thank you Netgalley and Lynette Noni for this arc! YALL. Oh. My. Gosh. This book was absolutely insane. The world and magic system is so unique, and kept me captivated the whole time. I read this book in three sittings, it just completely took over my mind, and I had to know what happened next. Viri is such a good fmc. I fully enjoyed my time in her pov. I wanted to learn everything about her, and just love her so much. And Reeve *giggles like a mad woman*, Reeve is such a good mmc. I fell in love instantly, and every time he was in the page I was falling more for him. The banter between the two of them was SO GOOD! And the tension was just magnificent. I also loved how they both have so many layers, they’re like onions in a way, and each layer we peeled back had me connecting to them even more. And the PLOT WAS SUCH A PLOT! And THE TURNS AND TWISTS AND JUST EVERYTHING! The ending truly had me staring at the acknowledgments, as if waiting for more to magically appear. I most definitely recommend this book, and look forward to the sequel.
I want to thank the publisher and Net Galley for allowing me a read.
Shadow Reaper might find its fans of those who don't tread often in fantasy, bu even still the magic and lack of chemistry between the male love interest and protagonist make it rough.
Other little things bothered me too. The world building seemed to be quasi modern mixed with feudal (elevators?). I was expecting a cell phone to be dragged out of a pocket.
The magic really doesn't click as to its reasons / way it is until you get to the tail end / reveal. Even still, it's pretty weak. Book two seems to be where it all comes to the front and is hand in hand with the story.
I gave it three stars because you have a group of characters that actually DO something - male love interest, female lead, the friends and the plot itself is interesting. It just has so much clunky withholding and poor romance to really make it seem worthy of it all.
I won't be sticking around for the conclusion, since I felt that two books may not have been enough to fully grasp or explain the world, but it's what it is.
This was such a fun read! From the very first page, I was hooked. Viri is the kind of FMC who immediately pulls you in; her story is captivating and her spirit is impossible not to root for. The world Lynette Noni has built is both fun and intriguing, with fierce hunters, mysterious reapers, a while host of magical lore that left me desperate to know more.
🥹 Found Family: The best part of this story, the bit that truly stole my heart, was the found family vibe. Viri’s unexpected gang of friends and reluctant allies is the kind of crew you’d give anything to be part of- loyal, chaotic, and endlessly endearing.
👏 Plot: This book is a rollercoaster of twists and turns. Some I smugly thought I saw coming… others blindsided me completely. And that ending? Lynette, how could you?? The first book isn’t even officially out yet and I already need my hands on book two!
❤️ Romance: Then there’s Viri and Reeve. The perfect duo. Their banter sparkles with attraction, wit, and charm. I fell hard for Reeve's cocky charisma (as did Viri, though she’ll never admit it). I’ve already saved so many of their quotes because they’re just that good.
Verdict: Shadow Reaper is everything I want in a YA fantasy- immersive worldbuilding, a heroine you can’t help but cheer for, a found family you can't help smile around, and a duo whose chemistry lights up every page. This is a series I’ll be obsessing over for a long time.
A big thank you to House of YA and Lynette Noni for providing me an ARC of this book!
Thank you to Penguin Random House, Knopf, and NetGalley for an eARC of this book!
Lynette Noni is just so good at creating an immersive world. Her Prison Healer series is one of my favorites, so I was excited to pick up Shadow Reaper. Noni’s writing is captivating and I loveeeee the characters she writes. Reeve, the MMC, really carried this book for me. I enjoyed spending time with the side characters, too. I’m a sucker for a found family, and I feel one brewing!! I wish those relationships were developed a little further in this first installment, though.
This book is twisty. It kept me on my toes, but maybe leaned a little too hard into so many twists and reveals in the last third of the book? If they were spread out a bit more, I think it would have been more impactful. The pacing in the first half was great, and then slowed down in the middle, but overall I still found myself engaged. The magic system is interesting, but could use more explanation.
This had a very strong, solid start but fizzled out as it progressed. Unfortunately, I found it to be very predictable - I guessed all of the major "twists" well in advance, and spent the rest of the time trying to puzzle out how the characters hadn't figured out what I realized several chapters prior. This may be an artifact of the fact that this is a YA story, but I also just didn't find the factors driving the plot forward to be very convincing. The magic system also needs work - it is unnecessarily convoluted, while also lacking explanation of certain aspects.
This is clearly book 1 of a series as it leaves off on a cliffhanger. I personally will not be picking it up, but I hope this book finds its audience!
The first half wasn’t my fave. I felt like it just dragged so long and I wasn’t connecting w/ any of the characters as much…
But there was def a turn around in the second half. Was it a substantial turn around? So-So. I do think the plot has potential though. I just wasn’t super immersed as I wanted to be.
Overall, if the first half isn’t for you (like me), def try to push through to the second half ‘cause I def felt like it picked up more and the ending!! I love a good twist.
Thank you to NetGalley, the author, and the publisher for the ARC of Shadow Reaper in exchange for an honest review.
Oh my goodness! This book had me at the edge of my seat! There were so many plot twists throughout the story and just when I thought I knew what was going to happen, the plot took a dramatic turn. I also loved the depth of the character development and the personality each character had. It took me a little bit of time to get used to the writing style, but overall I really liked the book's plot and the characters' personalities!
This book was beyond amazing. I couldn’t put it down and the plot twists just kept on coming! It was a really well developed world and I found myself often comparing bits and pieces that reminded me of other fantasy writers works all compiled neatly into this original work. Easily 5 stars, I cannot wait to read the next one! Absolutely one of my favourite Lynette Noni books.
The most captivating, magically charged, chemistry infused, banter filled, gut wrenching YA Fantasy that I've read in a long time!!!
Topped with a cliff hanger that will set your teeth on edge with so many twists and turns that you are glued to the page!!!
" No matter how dark the shadows seem, you'll never be alone in them. I promise. "
I was thrown head first into this world from the get go, the pacing - perfect! The characters, the plot, the magic system!!! All completely spot on!! I had such a hard time putting this down, that for days I was up till the early hours of the morning reading - pfft sleep .. not needed.
It was clear to me from the very start that this was going to be one of my favourite reads this year. The world building and unique magic system were both key elements that I found highly enjoyable and very easy to get lost in the world Lynette has created.
This is a YA Fantasy ( first in a duology ) - BUT its definitely on the darker and more mature side in terms of the creatures and magic used. No spice - which I love! Don't get me wrong, I have nothing against spice in a book. The way Lynette writes though, there is just no need for it. The story line is incredibly strong and unique on its own and she has a beautiful way of weaving pure chemistry between characters that doesn't feel the need to rely on any spicy romance especially since the main characters are between 17yrs - 22yrs. The entire story is clean, well executed and packed full of tension both between characters and storyline. The pacing between each scene is so fluid, it doesn't feel rushed nor does it feel dragging. I was captivated the entire time, chasing each new revelation.
" You can lie to yourself all you want, Little Shadow, but the next time you ask me to kiss you, we both know it'll be because you want it as much as I do."

Characters
FMC - Viridia Solace ( Viri )
I found it very easy to love and admire the stength Viri exuded. Surviving such a broken past, she wasn't the kind of girl to be a victim. She had strengths AND weaknesses. There is nothing worse that having a female main character that is perfect at everything, there needs to be some grit and flaws that grounds them as a person, things they can overcome on multiple different levels and this is exactly what Viri offered. I appreciated the way I was privy to her internal struggles and her thought process, how she came to decisions and not every decision was correct. I also loved her relationship with her bestfriend Wynter. It felt fun and light with the under current of seriousness. Pure acceptance of each other and even with a difference of opinion, the respect and complete trust they both shared.
I find a lot of Lynette Nonis side characters offer very unique, loveable and relatable qualities that speak to very strong found family connections that you can't help but fall in love with.
MMC - Reeve
I loved this character the moment he came into the story. His overly confident attitude that held just a hint of cockiness with the full effect of knowing he was in complete control of every room he occupied. That sureness of himself that just exuded clarity without being overbearing in a suffocating kind of way. The familiarity that he toyed with Viri and the banter he so easily pulled from her, coupled with the fierceness in which he protected her. From the very start he has been my favorite character and I can't wait to see where book two fleshes out his story a bit more!!! That cliffhanger had me gagged!!
Side Character - Jonas
Another side character that I just LOVE!!! And yes I know I say that a lot! I did tell you already, all of Lynettes Side characters are top tier. When I picture Jonas, I envision him like a younger Milo from the Disney movie Atlantis, except he has an adorable bunny he takes with him everywhere! More so the personality characteristics than the physical appearance. Jonas is incredibly smart, equal parts eager and humble to learn and explore magic, a bit timid and fiercely loyal. We loveeeeee Jonas and of course his bunny Walnut!
I don't want to go to much further into more side characters or villains as I don't want to give away any spoilers !! And trust me.. you want to ride this roller-coaster!!
The Magic System -
This was very intriguing and highly captivating, yet easy to understand. Babies are born with a kernal of magic that grows then peaks around the age of 14, children are then encouraged to surrender their magic to one of 4 Obelisk's in the corners of the city of Aravell which fuel the magic into warding the city, stopping the life threatening Blackmist from seeping across the boarders. After sacrificing their magic for the greater good, people are left with a small kernal of magic that is tied to their life force, if children don't sacrifice their magic by the age of 14 they risk their magic growing too much and causing a burn out resulting in death or mindless existence. Because of the large amounts of magic flowing through the children's bodies, they have become the largest target for the Reapers who are addicted to syphoning magic. When children start disappearing without a trace Viri knows undoubtedly its the Reaper Priest she has been hunting and vows to do whatever it takes, whatever the price to stop him.
Tropes include -
• Strong Found Family • Childhood friends to Enemys to something not defined but the chemistry is scorching! • He falls first • So much banter! • Jail Breaks / Heists and a dangerous forbidden forest style Journey. • Forced Proximity
Thank you so very much to Lynette Noni, Bec & Penguin Books Australia for sending me this incredible book!! It really has been one of my favourite reads all year and I am very excited to see it on shelves for its release in June!
“Time to choose, Little Shadow. Will you bargain with a reaper?” ︵‿︵‿୨✧₊⊹☆⊹₊✧୧‿︵‿︵ ~ 𝒇𝒆𝒂𝒕𝒖𝒓𝒆𝒔 ~ ✨ third person pov ✨ forbidden romance ✨ childhood friends to enemies ︵‿︵‿୨✧₊⊹☆⊹₊✧୧‿︵‿︵
~ 𝒐𝒗𝒆𝒓𝒂𝒍𝒍 𝒕𝒉𝒐𝒖𝒈𝒉𝒕𝒔 ~ I loved every second of Shadow Reaper, it just might be my new obsession and I was already pretty hyped about it going in. The way in which Lynette Noni writes is just downright addictive. The cast of characters are instant favorites with lovable personalities and riveting backstories. The turns are extra twisty in that it absolutely sent me spiraling with just how downright heart-stopping dramatic they can be. It’s truly a whirlwind that really takes the story to the next level and shifting dynamics; it has me dying for the sequel.
~ 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒘𝒓𝒊𝒕𝒊𝒏𝒈 + 𝒔𝒕𝒐𝒓𝒚 ~ The plot is incredibly well-paced and balanced throughout. It never really hits a lull nor does it feel like too much is happening all at once. While the story does have slightly familiar elements, it wouldn’t be too farfetched to swap in reapers for vampires for instance, but Noni adds her own unique spin on common tropes that really elevated them.
Without a doubt Lynette Noni knows how to craft an insane clever twist, it will have readers just eating it up because of how well she subverts expectations. The cliff-hanger and the tension of the very last page is so crazy that it’s almost criminal in which Noni leaves the reader hanging for more.
~ 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒄𝒉𝒂𝒓𝒂𝒄𝒕𝒆𝒓𝒔 ~ ⟢ viridia solace ⟢ I found Viri to be such a fascinating heroine with her determined and fierce attitude. Plus her weapon is reminiscent of Wonder Woman’s lasso of truth which definitely adds some cool points. She goes through so much that if I was in her shoes I would just need a very long break, but Viri instead pushes forward. At the start she’s in her very much justified female rage mindset that was fueled by her grief to her slowly discovering that her beliefs and what she thinks she knows are now being challenged. Viri is far from perfect, but she’s ever evolving as she unpacks all her trauma and while she can be strong-headed, it’s not to point where’s unable to admit when she has made mistakes and her heart is always in the right place.
⟢ reeve ashton ⟢ Reeve is definitely one of the highlights, he’s (very) confident and oh so charming that you can’t help but fall for him as a character. He has such a twinkle in the eye kind of humor, that makes almost all his lines golden. Technically he’s presented as a red flag, but as the layers are slowly being peeled back he’s very sweet and has a lot of hidden green flags. There’s still a lot to puzzle out about him and I look forward to learning more about him in the sequel.
~ 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝒓𝒐𝒎𝒂𝒏𝒄𝒆 ~ The dynamics between Viri and Reeve is so deeply complicated with them being childhood friends to them now being enemies given their respective reputations as hunter and reaper. The building romantic tension and angst between the pair is just sooo satisfying with forced proximity thrown in the mix as they find themselves working together. Plus their banter was just so much fun to read and I can feel the sparkles flying with every interaction.
What really made the romance shine is that Reeve and Viri are often going through different situations together and while they’re no longer the kids they were seven years ago, their shared moments show that sparks of that bond still haven't fizzled out. There's some inst-attraction with them not seeing each other after years, but it doesn’t overpower or render their chemistry to being just shallow and revolving around lust. This is in part thanks to their shared history that further adds some layers to their relationship.
While it's not the slowest of burns out there, there’s some build-up with Viri slowly warming up to Reeve as she finds herself second-guessing herself and trying to compartmentalize what she thinks she knows about the current Reeve and the actions she is actually seeing with her own eyes. Their relationship doesn’t suddenly just jump to them confessing their undying love for each, it’s very much about Viri learning to trust again. There are subtle moments where I can see their romantic connection starting to blossom as it takes root with them growing closer again on a deeper level.
The theme of 2026 so far for me seems to be "if anything happens to Jonas, I will not be okay."
Shadow Reaper is the first book in a YA dark fantasy duology taking place in a world where there are reapers that essentially work like vampires, but instead of consuming blood, they consume magic. I enjoyed Lynette Noni's The Prison Healer trilogy, so I figured I'd check this book out as well. Was it incredibly trope-y? Yes. Did I still enjoy it? Also yes. I will mention that although it seems like this would fit better as an upper YA book, parts of it read as lower YA (probably around the 14+ age range), so older readers might find some issues with it. I also want to know quick that I really enjoyed the worldbuilding. I'm slowly trying to introduce myself to vampire books, and while the reapers aren't technically vampires, they're very similar, and I really liked the concept.
Viridia Solace (Viri) is a hunter. Her job is to hunt down the reapers that siphon away the lives of children, but when Reeve Ashton, her childhood friend turned enemy who just happens to be the right-hand man of the Reaper Priest, turns up in a prison cell, Viri is given an offer: if she helps him escape, he'll give her information that might allow her to avenge her parents once and for all. But Viri and Reeve's fates might be more intertwined than they thought, and they might be the only thing standing between the city and its destruction. There's action, adventure, intrigue, and plenty of tension. The story took a little bit to pick up, but the end was super fast-paced and, if you've ever read a Lynette Noni book before you'll know, plenty of plot twists. I did call most of the plot twists but only because I've read some of her books before, and there were still one or two I didn't fully catch (I had the pieces but didn't know how they fit together). As I mentioned earlier, this book is super trope-y, with "who did this to you" happening less than five chapters in. I'm already excited for where book two goes because I think it'll be even better given how this one ended.
This is one of those books where I become irrationally attached to side characters and I already know it'll only end poorly for me. If I'm being honest, Viri was probably my least favorite character. She's a fairly generic YA fantasy FMC; she has dead parents, skills with weapons, and plenty of reason to beef with the love interest. She definitely felt like she was getting dragged by the plot, which in the context of the whole plot makes sense, but it was kind of annoying at times. I'm interested to see if I like her more in book 2 because the main issue I had with her will hopefully be resolved, but we'll see. I also didn't care much for Reeve. Again, he's a BookBoyTM in that he wears all black, flirts too much, and spends more time simping for the FMC than he probably should. His banter with Viri was fun when she participated, but I liked the side characters more. Their romance was a bit instalovey for me and I have some icked out feelings about the childhood friend trope when he reads as more of a brother figure, but that might be a me thing. This book has found family in the marketing, but I don't 100% agree...although I'm hoping book 2 proves me wrong. Wynter was a great best friend to Viri and I'm interested to see how her arc changes in the future. I thought Sorin and Sage were cool, though I wasn't super attached to either of them. Ardin felt entirely irrelevant and also I irrationally hated him because he was giving Carlisle Cullen at first (I didn't realize he was young and also all of Reeve's friends gave Cullen vibes). Jonas was my favorite because I love the little nerd characters, plus he has a pet bunny named Walnut. If anything happens to him, I will probably need therapy. I also really (unexpectedly) liked Braeden and I'm interested to see what happens with him next. And I know I don't typically mention antagonists in my reviews, but the one in this book is so cartoonishly villainous that I think they single-handedly make this feel like a younger YA than it's meant to be. So many cliche villain lines and also they're insanely overpowered right now...it's kind of funny, actually.
Shadow Reaper is the first book in a YA dark fantasy series perfect for fans of Shadowhunters or for anyone looking for a fun, twisty read with a bunny sidekick. Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the free e-ARC!
✨He was a reaper, and she was a hunter. They were sworn enemies, now and forever. That was it. ✨
✨Time to choose, Little shadow. Will you bargain with a reaper? ✨
✨But therein lies my problem. Because a heart divided is a heart unfaithful. ✨
✨I stopped for snacks. ✨ ~ 📖Summary:
The city of Aravell is dying under a deadly blackmist and the reapers who roam it, stealing magic from children to fuel their power. 17-year-old Viridia Solace has trained her whole life to hunt them—especially their leader, the Reaper Priest, who murdered her parents. When the Priest’s most loyal follower, Reeve Ashton, is captured, he offers Viri a chance at revenge… for a price. Desperate, she makes a deal she knows she shouldn’t. Soon Viri is breaking Reeve out of prison and following him into the blackmist forest to stop the Priest’s plan to doom the city. But trusting a silver-tongued criminal is dangerous—and trusting her own heart may be even worse, when a buried secret threatens to shatter everything.
🖊️💞My thoughts:
YOoOoOoO 😭😱 those three plot twists were DIABOLICAL! Mrs. Lynette Noni, you are a GENIUS and also a literal menace. How dare you do us like thattttt?? I’m still catching my breath from that cliffhanger!! The way I sat up so fast I almost got whiplash when Sarielle said that line (IYKYK) … I had to run around my house five times just to process it. And now, finally, I can attempt to write a review—but honestly, nothing could capture the chaotic emotional rollercoaster that was this book. ~ The premise of this novel is utterly captivating—every page piles on a little more chaos, and I loved it. I especially appreciated the interludes between chapters where Noni delves into the history of the reapers and ties it seamlessly to the present story. The world-building is fantastic; I never once felt lost, and all the unique terms and magic systems are explained clearly without ever slowing down the story. Noni makes it all feel immersive, thrilling, and perfectly digestible. ~ One thing I will say I am angry about is the fact that this man REEVE ASHTON doesn't exist (moment of silence please) I am telling you right now. THE MAN ONLY SAID 4 WORDS when he was being introduced, and I had already fallen in LOVEEE AND THEN HOW IT WAS EVEN POSSIBLE HE JUST KEPT GETTING BETTER AND BETTER? ~ Noni describes his character SO well and the BAN.TER.ING between him and Viri?? Ohhh my goshhh it’s literally un-explainable, no words. I hated him so much… because of how MUCH I LOVED HIM 😭💀 (if that even makes sense LOL). I honestly don’t think there was one single word or scene he was in that I didn’t adore 🥹💖✨ I LOVED EVERYTHING about his character. 💫🔥💌 ~ Every alliance is risky. Every choice costs something. The tension isn’t just will they survive? but who’s lying, and why does it hurt so good when they almost trust each other? You’re not just reading to see who wins—you’re reading to see who breaks first. And trust me, once you start, you won’t want to put it down until the blackmist clears. 🖤✨ AhHHHH I can’t believe how great this book was. Excuse me while I go stare at a wall and try to comprehend what JUST happened. *oh and also.... he calls her “little shadow” so yeah.... ~ If you like: morally gray love interests slow-burn chemistry under life-or-death pressure betrayal, secrets, and “this will absolutely go wrong” plans fantasy that balances action with emotional payoff
…this book is absolutely your next obsession.
Huge thank you to NetGalley, Random House Children's Books and Lynette Noni for this ARC I am beyond grateful for the opportunity 💌.
4.5 stars. Trust yourself. Trust your friends. Trust your magic.
Mark my words, Lynette Noni's SHADOW REAPER will be on every YA fantasy list this year. Noni has created a very fun, albeit dark world with a cool magic system, haunting atmosphere, and characters that you can't help but fall for. Aravell is a city filled with reapers, hunters, and a deadly blackmist that threatens to kill everyone. Reapers thirst for power and siphon magic from stolen children, and Hunters keep them at bay. At the center of the story is our FMC Viridia - a hunter, and our MMC - Reeve, a reaper. The two have a complicated past relating to the death of her parents, but combine their efforts for a chance for Vi to avenge them and save Aravell's stolen children from the Reaper Priest.
The plot is captivating and filled with magical lore, heists, adventures through diabolical forests, and a battalion of action and mystical creatures. I really think a major strength lies in these characters, and I found the tension and snarky banter between Vi and Reeve to be fun, flirty and charming. Personally, I'd be crushing on Reeve so hard, so I get it girl. I also thought the supporting cast was wonderful, and a special shoutout to Vi's besties Wynter and Soren for being such loyal confidantes. EXTRA special shout out to Walnut, the floofiest of the floofs. God, I love a proper fantasy animal companion.
Like a seasoned drag queen, Miss Lynette flawlessly unveils reveal after reveal, truly making you question where the story is going. And while I out of pocket guessed the final reveal, I don't think most will see it coming. Now all that said, while I loved Lynette's writing, it often feels like there’s a lot of telling and not showing with info dumps from characters sharing memories or explaining how they came to be in flashbacks. I was still intrigued to see the twists unfold, but they often do from words, instead of actions. And speaking of words, Miss Lynette sure loves the word, "niggle", I think its used as least a handful of times.
Overall, this is a great YA fantasy that will keep you turning the pages. Noni addressed the reader in the beginning about how she wrote this for herself after burn out, so this story isn't only a triumph for the characters she created, but for herself. This is the first in a duology, and with the way things ended, I'm champing at the bit to see what happens next. Thanks to Penguin Random House, Knopf and NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for an honest review!
“As long as people lusted for power, there were always going to be those willing to pay any price for it.”
The Shadow Reaper by Lynette Noni ARC provided by NetGalley! Thank you for the opportunity
I went into The Shadow Reaper with high expectations after loving The Prison Healer trilogy and I’m happy to say this book exceeded them!
From the very beginning, I loved everything about this reading experience: the stunning cover, the map, the author’s letter, and the care that went into the world building. Lynette Noni’s writing feels as immersive and impeccable as ever. There’s something incredibly comforting in her storytelling, and I especially appreciated the honesty in her author’s note about burnout. Knowing that both readers and writers face it and seeing how she pushed through to create something this strong!! Made the experience even more meaningful.
Mark my words: The Shadow Reaper will be on many YA fantasy lists this year. (C'mon Rebecca Yarros is rarely misses and her quote is on the cover!!)
Noni has created a dark yet captivating world set in Aravell, a city plagued by reapers, hunters, and a deadly blackmist that threatens everyone. Reapers are terrifying, soul-consuming beings who prey on children, while reaper hunters exist to stop them and our FMC, Viridia Solace, is one of those hunters. Her goal is clear: catch reapers and find the Reaper Priest to avenge her parents’ deaths.
Opposite her is Reeve, a reaper and the right hand of the Reaper Lord. Their dynamic is everything I love in fantasy romance childhood best friends turned enemies, simmering tension, and immaculate banter. The chemistry between them was so well done, and the emotional weight behind their history made every interaction hit harder.
The worldbuilding is rich without being overwhelming, the magic system is fascinating, and the character development is strong on both sides. And the plot twists? Lynette Noni knows exactly when and how to reveal them and she gets me every time.
The cliffhanger absolutely wrecked me. I genuinely wish I’d waited until the entire series was out… but also, I wouldn’t trade the experience of reading this early for anything.
✨ Quote that broke me:
“Because I’m a reaper, and you’re a hunter, and the only thing that will ever be between us is hatred.”
