“I knew exactly what he meant.
Make him forget that this was it.
Make him forget that this could never be.
Make him forget that after tonight, we would be no longer.
But how could you forget a person when they were written across your heart?”
”Darling Dimitri, you've forgotten to uncuff me,” I sing-songed, trying to lift my arm and getting caught by the chain.
He paused with his hand on the doorknob and looked at me over his shoulder. “No. I haven't.”
Then he walked out, leaving me alone in the room with what was left of my minestrone.
My mouth fell open at the audacity.
“Hello?” I called out, and pounded my fist on the table. “I'm still tied to a chair in here. Hellooooo?”
”I never wanted to be a…monstre
“You were never the monster. Just a man in a cage of your own making. Mon monstre.”
He nodded as his lips met mine. “Yours.”
“You can let your walls down,” he said so softly that I almost missed it. “It's just you and me now.”
I wish I could—
“Wish you could what?” Dimitri’s question had me realizing I’d started to say those private thoughts out loud, and I snapped my mouth shut.
He leaned back, taking my chin in hand and searching my eyes. It didn’t matter what I said; it had to be written all over my expression.
There went having the best poker face among my brothers.
“Tell me,” he demanded, and I couldn’t find it in myself to lie to him anymore.
I brushed his hair back from his face. “I wish I could stay. I wish I could love you.”
What I didn’t say was for the rest of our lives, but that had been enough.
Those dark, piercing eyes softened and he swallowed. “I know,” he said quietly, bringing my hand to his lips and pressing a kiss to each one of my fingers. “I wish that too.”
And that was almost worse than silence.
