The Orc's True Love: Book One in a new monster romance series

Rate this book
A cursed monster. A cynical mortal. A fated kiss that could save them—or doom them both.

He believes in destiny. She doesn't believe in magic. Only one of them is wrong.

VULTOG

I have been banished to the Earth realm by a deceitful witch! Alone in a chaotic city called "London" and cursed with a mortal's appearance, I must fight to return home.

A kiss from my True Love should be powerful enough to break my curses. But I don’t know how to find her in this strange new land.

I have enlisted a pair of mortal sisters to guide me through their world. But the eldest sister is just as infuriating as she is beautiful…

RAYNA

I’ll do anything to protect my younger sister, so I’m supervising her friendship with that weird man who believes he is an orc. He keeps talking about ‘True Love’ and other fairy tale concepts designed for children.

I just want to leave my childhood in the past. But, when Vultog shares some information that matches my only keepsake, I have no choice but to trust him.

I don’t like him, but we’re connected. And if he really is a monster, then that’s the least frightening thing about this situation…

The Orc’s True Love is the first book in a dark fantasy monster romance series following one couple. Packed with tension, slow-burn attraction, humour, and heart, it’s perfect for fans of the fated mates trope.

Please this novel ends on a cliff hanger.

"The Orc's True Love" offers readers a compelling blend of dark fantasy and monster romance, but it ultimately struggles with pacing that may affect the overall enjoyment of the story.

The protagonist, Vultog, finds himself banished to Earth, navigating the chaotic streets of London while wrestling with a mortal appearance and the curse placed upon him. The premise is intriguing and sets the stage for an exploration of identity and love in unfamiliar territory. However, the story unfolds at a notably slow pace, which might test the patience of some readers. At times, it feels as though entire chapters could have been condensed without losing any depth or richness in the storytelling.

Rayna, the eldest sister, provides an interesting dynamic as she reluctantly becomes involved in Vultog's quest for "True Love." Her protective instincts toward her younger sister add a layer of tension, but her initial dismissiveness toward Vultog’s plight contrasts sharply with the deeper connections that eventually emerge. This relationship between Vultog and Rayna serves as one of the key emotional undercurrents in the narrative, albeit at a frustratingly slow burn.

Despite its pacing issues, the book does deliver on certain fronts, with moments of humor and heart woven throughout. The charm in Vultog's character shines through, particularly in his interactions with the sisters, drawing readers into his struggle and evolution. For those who enjoy the fated mates trope, this story undoubtedly offers a taste of that thrilling connection, even if it takes its time to fully develop.

In conclusion, "The Orc's True Love" sets up a unique premise and the potential for engaging character development. While the sluggish pacing might deter some readers, those willing to embrace the slow burn may find a rewardingly rich fantasy romance. It’s worth a read for fans of the genre, particularly if you enjoy a good mix of humor, tension, and the exploration of unconventional love.

The Orc's True Love by Shay Francis is the first story in her monster romance series. The book is separated into three distinct parts, and the story ends on a cliffhanger with the second book expected sometime in 2026. The book is an interesting mashup of various fairy tales (retellings) and fictitious characters along with references to actual historical figures. Some of the tropes Ms. Francis uses are proximity, monster romance, enemies to lovers, fated mates (true love), hidden identities, and cheating (he’s married). A ruthless orc in his own realm, Vultog has been transformed into a mere mortal and banished to the earth city of London, his only hope of returning to his home is through true love’s kiss. He soon meets Juno and her hostile sister Rayna; Rayna is beyond appalled when her sister brings Vultog home like a stray. He is odd and speaks like he is from medieval times! While off to a very shaky start, Rayna and Vultog (and Juno) soon find that they have an improbable and magical connection. As they try to unravel eons of deception and mysticism, curses, danger, intrigue and love come along for the ride. Ms. Shay gives her readers a complex, involved and occasionally convoluted story, crossing worlds and finding few friends but more enemies. As noted, the story ends on a cliffhanger and readers must continue the series to find out if our main characters survive (together) and in what form. I personally enjoyed their time in London more than Terraork. Truth be told, Vultog as an orc was slightly cringy😊.
Conclusion:
I enjoyed Ms. Francis’s world-building skills as a storyteller and her characters (in both forms) were interestingly realized. However, the story had many moving pieces and plot contrivances or twists which made it somewhat hard to follow. I hope that in part two, the loose ends are tied up and Vultog and Rayna can breathe and enjoy their connection. I rated this story at a 3.75 rounded to 4.
Favorite Lines:
When Jack had cut down the Beanstalk, he’d also destroyed the bridge connecting their two realms.
I’d been gravely insulted. We orcs were a majestic and ruthless race.
Hand to hand combat was forbidden under these rules, so cutting tones would have to do.
Your elder sister and I fought valiantly so that you could be here, alive and free, throwing this deplorable tantrum!
‘I see that you desire my presence so much, that you just had to run here and experience me some more.’
All I got was the beckoning call of his eyes, welcoming me, a kindred spirit, into the fold. Neither one of us were angels. That much was clear.
Vultog blinked and sniffled, struggling to keep his eyes dry. ‘The human body is deplorable.’
I am most grateful for you, it has been a privilege to fight the beasts of this world alongside you… and I think–no, I am confident–that you are my True Love.’
Her pride had prevented her from speaking her true feelings aloud, but she had a craving for me too.
However, I soon learnt that my transmutation was merely the opening act in a wider metamorphosis spectacle.
Our kiss had been highly enjoyable. I wanted more. But was I capable of being attracted to Vultog the Orc?
‘My vexation is momentary, but… but my love for you is eternal.’
‘I’ve met my match in you, haven’t I?’ Vultog muttered, half-delirious with awe.
‘I remember every single face in the mob that chased me out of Jack’s village.
‘Your beauty was wasted on Earth… how?’

📖 Title: The Orc's True Love- The Orc's True Love Saga #1

✍🏾 Author: Shay Francis-debut author

📃 Format: e-Book 452 pgs.

Genre:
* Dark Fantasy
*Romance
*AA Interests

Tropes:
*time travel
*grumpy monster H
*family drama
*fated mates/true love's kiss
*slow burn
*fairytale retellings-Jack and the Beanstalk and Brothers Grimm
*witches, orcs, fae, magic
*hidden/secret identities

👆🏾POV: 1st person dual

⚠️TW: racism, foster care, death of parents-H, drug use, kidnapping

🌎 Setting: London

Summary: When Jack and the Beanstalk steals Vultog's money, a witch gives Vultog magical beans to get revenge but is instead banished to Earth as a human. He meets the Smith sisters Rayna and Juno. They in foster care and lived on the streets- Rayna the protective one, and Juno the easy-going one. Juno befriends Vultog first, and the sisters agree to help him get home by finding his true love in exchange for finding out about their biological family. Juno is kidnapped by drug dealers (the drug AWTF allows someone to see through fae glamour), and Rayna and Vultog go on a mission to find her. All of them are swept into an alternate universe of fae, flying creatures, and hostile orcs.

👩🏾 Heroine: Rayna Smith-26, has a magical harp anklet, works at the Bank of England

👨🏾 Hero: Vultog-an orc from Terraork, given golden goose and harp from his King.

🎭 Other Characters:

* Juno Smith-18, Rayna's younger sister

*Shazgob-Vultog's wife in a marriage of convenience
*Yakgnarth- Vultog's childhood friend-has a drug-brewing lab and allows fae to experience living w/ mortals (kidnaps them) and take them as pets
*The Orc King-had an agreement w/ the Unseelie Queen to get rid of threats such as the Aziza's royal family.

🤔 My Thoughts: This was funny, whimsical, and very steamy. Vultog and Rayna had some witty banter and arguments together. I thought Juno was naive after being overprotected by Rayna. It took her a minute, but she grew up and went on her own journey. Rayna stilled hoped to find her family and Vultog wanted his vengeance on the King. It ended in a cliffhanger with the heroine and hero separated, but we got a great reveal. Can't wait for book #2!

Rating: 3.5/5 ✨

A tender and unexpected romance that charms from beginning to end

The Orc’s True Love by Shay Francis is a delightful, heartwarming read that blends gentle fantasy with sweet, slow-burn romance in the most unexpected and lovely way. At its core, this is a story about vulnerability, acceptance, and the kind of love that grows through quiet understanding and mutual respect.

Francis takes what could easily be a trope-driven concept and infuses it with genuine heart. The orc character is written with surprising emotional depth—more than just a “beast with a heart of gold,” he’s a layered, thoughtful being who yearns for connection but struggles with how the world sees him. His journey is touching and sincere, and it’s impossible not to root for him.

The romantic lead is just as charming, bringing warmth and patience to their growing relationship. Their bond develops slowly and believably, filled with tender moments, soft humor, and an undeniable chemistry that feels earned rather than rushed. Watching them navigate their differences and find common ground was such a joy.

The writing style is accessible and cozy, with a soothing pace that suits the emotional tone of the story. While there are moments of tension and uncertainty, the overall feeling is one of comfort and healing—a true “feel-good fantasy” experience.

If there’s any critique, it’s that some parts of the story could have been expanded a little more—particularly the world-building, which had potential for greater depth. But this doesn't take away from the emotional core of the story, which is what truly shines.

In summary, The Orc’s True Love is a beautifully soft and satisfying read that proves true love can bloom in even the most unlikely of places. Shay Francis has created something quietly magical, and it’s the kind of book that leaves you with a smile and a full heart. Highly recommended for readers who love gentle fantasy, wholesome romance, and stories that celebrate love in all its forms.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️“Shrek but make it spicy, emotional and slightly traumatised”

Imagine you’re an orc. You had a home. A life. Then some greedy human named Jack climbs a beanstalk and steals your money and while following you fall into another world, fast forward, and you’re living in the woods, broke and lonely—until a witch zaps you straight into modern-day London… wearing the face and body of the lowly humans you despise.

Welcome to the chaotic tale of our poor displaced orc, now homeless and confused in a city that exactly welcoming to homeless, mentally deranged people.
All he wants is true love’s kiss to break the curse (as one does), but what he finds instead are Juno, a bit too trusting and helpful and Rayna: a sharp-tongued, no-nonsense Londoner who grew up in the foster system and is fiercely protective of her little sister. Trying to maneuver dating apps and making a living as a Viking impersonator challenges the strongest orc.

The book is fun, snarky, and doesn’t take itself too seriously—for the first two thirds, at least. Think rom-com meets fairy-tale chaos. But don’t be fooled: once we return to the fae realm in the final act, things get intense. Secrets are revealed, loyalties questioned, and the emotional stakes suddenly skyrocket. The spice gets spicy. The contrast works well and gives the story surprising depth.

The romance? Slow burn with heat. The banter? Chef’s kiss. The emotional damage? Unexpectedly real.

Oh, and the cover? Absolutely atrocious. But don’t judge this one by its art department.

Highly recommended if you like fairy tale twists, grumpy/sunshine dynamics, or just want to root for a cursed green man trying to make it back home with his true love….and yes, I know that Shrek is an ogre and not an orc IYKYK

Picking up the sequel for sure.

First of all, thanks so much to NetGalley for this ARC! It's very much appreciated.

This book for me was a solid 3.25 stars read!
The story follows Rayna and an Orc and from my experience, I could see an enemies to lovers relationship and tension. I thought it was a very cool plot and there are little fantasies featuring Orc's and I felt like I was reading something Disney themed! Or even Shrek which brought back childhood memories 😅 Overall, the book was very enjoyable, Rayna was hilarious and I loved her character. I also loved the mood of the book and the writing was entertaining. I wasn't bored at all and loved to read the dialogue!!

Though I knocked off some stars because:
I felt like this was a fantasy (based on the atmosphere) of something rather not that modern. So when dating apps were mentioned I got a bit annoyed. There's also mentions of slang and abbreviations like "tbh" that I didn't really enjoy. They'd be fine in a romance, but in a fantasy, I think not. Especially with the whole Orc "vibe" if you will that really reminded me of a vintage foresty style.
I also loved the enemies to lovers relationship but there was a part about 20 percent in that he grabbed her from the waist. And she got butterflies and I wanted there to be more of a slow burn as it's enemies to lovers.

Though this is my personal opinion and I think overall this book was great and had a lot of thought. It's an enjoyable book and I think it's also great for people who want to get in the fantasy genre.

Anything I said shouldn't be taken to heart as it's my opinion, and how I interpreted it. I hope others enjoy those parts I didn't and I wish the author all possible success! Thank you again, this was a lovely experience.

Keep on writing Shay, you have lots of potential ❤️❤️

This is not a light read, and it is not a safe one — emotionally or thematically.

This novel is a dark fantasy romance that actively interrogates power, identity, devotion, and harm rather than romanticizing them. The story blends fairy-tale mythology with modern systems of violence (trafficking, surveillance, political manipulation), and it does so unapologetically. Readers looking for comfort, immediate catharsis, or a neatly redeemable romance should approach with caution.

The central relationship is intentionally volatile. Love, obsession, protection, and control are constantly in conflict, and the narrative does not rush to justify or resolve that tension. What stood out most to me was the exploration of fractured identity — particularly the protagonist’s struggle between survival selfhood and reclaimed sovereignty — and how power without healing can become destructive.

This book earns its trigger warnings. It does not use dark themes for shock value alone, but it also does not soften their impact. The ending is a true cliffhanger, closing at the height of emotional and narrative tension rather than resolution.

While this was a difficult read at times, it was also a compelling and ambitious one. Readers who enjoy dark fantasy romance that leans into moral ambiguity, political intrigue, and psychologically complex characters will likely find this memorable — though not easy.

I would recommend this to readers who are prepared for a heavy, challenging experience and who appreciate stories that sit with discomfort rather than explaining it away.

What a funky little book this was! It had a great mixture of fairytales reimagined in a modern setting. Vultog and Rayna meet one day in London when her sister helps feed a homeless man. That man ends up being Vultog, an Orc from another world, thrust ruthless onto Earth with no means to survive. He looks human, but is clearly not.

Little by little, we learn about why Vultog is caste away on Earth, and Rayna decides to believe him and try to get him home. It's such a funky book because he needs to find his "true love's kiss" in order to go home, so she and her sister help him go on dates. They get into some major shenanigans one night, and before we know it Rayna, her sister, and Vultog are thrust back to his home planet together.

What didn't quite hit for me is the "love" between Rayna and Vultog. I guess I just didn't feel the progression that lead to Vultog having his epiphany that Rayna was his mate. I feel like I missed some important pieces of them going from friendly to "more than friends". Overall, this was an okay read for me. Lots and lots of world building that I sometimes got lost in, but I can see how this may make for a fun series overall because I'm definitely interested to see what will happen next to this couple, but also her sister, their friend, and the new enemies they meet along the way.

The Orc’s True Love is an unexpectedly tender and comforting fantasy romance. I went in curious and ended up genuinely charmed. Shay Francis delivers a soft, character-driven story that focuses more on emotional connection than high drama, and it really works.

The orc love interest is a standout—gentle, patient, and far deeper than the usual “gruff monster” stereotype. His dynamic with the heroine feels warm and respectful, and I appreciated how their relationship grows through communication and trust. The human protagonist’s healing arc also lands well; she’s relatable, and her emotional journey feels sincere.

The pacing is cozy and steady, leaning into vibes rather than action. Readers looking for an epic fantasy plot might find it quieter than expected, but if you’re in the mood for something heartwarming with a hint of spice, this scratches that itch beautifully.

Overall, this is a sweet, comforting romance with great character chemistry and a surprisingly soft touch. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read this ARC in exchange for an honest review.

I’m really not sure how to rate this book. There are a lot of parts that I really enjoyed, and other parts that I had to trudge through to get through. I was really locked in and enjoying the story until about 75%. I felt like the love story was perfect until ahem, Rayna kinda lost her shit and was inconsolable for several chapters. I also felt like there was a lot crammed into the last 25%, which made my head spin.

This was a really unique take on some of our favorite childhood stories, which turns them inside out and on their head. This book is very different than my usual reads, but I enjoyed learning about the Orc history, Faes, and all of the mythical stories. There was a lot of world-building, and the main characters go through so much trauma and heartache that it is tough. I would say this is a dark romance, but more like a dark (tragic) story with some romance. I think I just wasn’t the target audience, but I did enjoy good chunks of the book!

I'm not sure how to rate it. It was okay for me? Thank you so much to Netgalley and Shay Francis for the e-ARC for my review!

Read the ARC, thank you NetGalley.

This is definitely a new and interesting story. I loved the Jack and the Beanstalk retelling which such interesting twists on the different worlds. I am a huge fan of world building and this book was full of it.

This definitely feels like a book that doesn't take itself too seriously. It's a romcom mixed with a fantasy adventure. I really enjoyed the sibling relationship in the beginning, it felt incredibly realistic. I loved reading about Vultog's attempts to assimilate into London. I wish we had more time to really see how his perspective on "mortals" shifts. There are a lot of threads in this story with Rayna, Vultog, the Guild, Juno, Jack, and the overarching story of the realms. I'm definitely going to pick up book 2 and see how these threads are weaved together.

The first half of this book was really good. I was pulled in and was excited to see what happened next. I liked all of the characters, especially Vultog and his transformation. However, the second half of the book just didn't do it for me. It seemed as if two different people wrote the book.

In the second half of the book, I disliked all the characters, especially Juno and Rayna. Rayna became insufferable, and Juno became ungrateful. I wanted to shake them both. Then, the selfishness of Vultog was unnecessary. The saving grace for this book was the last couple of chapters and the epilogue. I want to read book 2 because I have to know how everything turns out.

📖The Orc’s True Love by Shay Francis
📖Book 1 in Saga| 452 Pages
📖Release on Nov 11, 2025!

⭐️⭐️⭐️.5/🌶️.5

I’m a bit out of sorts with this one. I quite enjoyed the story premise; an orc banish from his home and stuck on Earth must seek out his True Love to break his curse, and two mortal sisters who have been recruited to help him navigate their world. I know it’s going to be a series so there are a lot of questions that I have that will hopefully be answered later on and I felt like this book could have been shorter. There was a lot of repeated information and I kept skimming. Beyond the little things, it really was a good book and I do look forward to reading the rest of the series.

Thank you to NetGalley and Shay for providing me with an advanced copy of The Orc’s True Love. All opinions in this review are my own!

Wow

I wasn't expecting this remix of various fairy tales to be so thrilling, heartbreaking, and moving. I enjoyed all the characters. Their big flaws never over took the positive aspects of them. And the positive aspects flowed well with their flaws. Every frustrated exclamation I made was always tempered by hope and excitement for what works happen next!

The plot did get more complex than I thought towards the very end, but I was able to follow it. Also, I felt vindicated by the twist, ever since a hint was dropped early on about Jack's appearance. Eagerly awaiting the next! 🖤🤌🏾

Thank NetGalley for the arc. This fantasy retelling was a good time. I loved the sister’s relationship in the beginning of the story. However, I felt as soon as the story progressed the relationship between the sisters tapered a little. Voltug was fun time and his banter was great. I really enjoyed the aspect of jumping into other realms. I do believe the story was a little long winded and in need of some editing but it was a solid story overall. I urge everyone to give this book a read for themselves. I wish the author great success.

I received this book via Netgalley ARC. I loved the first half of this book. I loved the sisters relationship, the back story and how realistic Raynas reactions were as the oldest sister. I also loved Vultogs experiences in London and getting used to a modern world. The plot was intreasting but the characters were likeable.
Unfortunately, once they reached Vultogs world it seemed like a completely different book. The plot seemed to go out the window, and the characters did a complete 180.

Thank you to NetGalley for this ARC.
I enjoyed the start of this book but I think that as much as it tried to have a plot, it was lost at the end of the day.
I did enjoy the banter and also loved the Nigerian names by the way made me smile. However, it felt very underwhelming and the end that was supposed to give shock value really fell short.

A retelling of Jack and the Beanstalk. The Giant in this story is an angry Orc named Vultog. Vultog is given a magic bean to find his true ❤️. He finds a friendship with sisters Rayna and Juno. As Vultog tries to reclaim what Jack has stolen from him, he discovers the King of the Orc's lies.. I received an advanced copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.

I love a good orc romance haha. This one follows Vultog, an orc cursed and banished to Earth (or “London,” as he calls it) by a witch and Rayna a mortal woman who definitely doesn’t believe in magic. He’s on a mission to find his true love and break his curse and she’s just trying to protect her little sister from this weird, brooding guy who claims he’s an orc. It’s got slow burn tension, humor, and that perfect fated mates story I love in monster romances. The dynamic between them is snarky and the fantasy setup gives it that extra charm. It does end on a cliffhanger though so prepare yourself before diving in

📚ARC Review 📚

This book was a nice mix of cozy, fantasy, slow-burn romance!

The book goes back and fourth between the two main characters and has a dual-POV and it lets you see the story from both sides and see what each of them are going through.

I loved the slow burn romance, forced proximity as well, and the way they interacted and went from angry with each other to sharing cute moments and then *spicy* together was nice. Shay also added humor in which I loved too.

The way she incorporated magic and classic fairytales and a little world building was nice as well, the POC representation in a fantasy is what drew me to it in the first place. The family drama also gave it another interesting angle.

Overall a good book, had a lot of chapters but they were quick! A lot of moving parts which could be a lot for some. Made for a nice cozy fall read. Ended on a cliffhanger so she’s definitely setting up for more in the series!

Thank you to NetGalley and Shay Francis for this ARC! 💚
