Welcome to the universe of murphy’s law. In this book everything will go terrible wrong, so you’re in for a rollercoaster ride.
This is the second book in a series (which I didn’t know), but what happened with the daughter and her mum was thoroughly described, so I didn’t feel confused and the book can definitely be read as a stand-alone. In my daughters husband Ellie marries Kyle and Ellie’s mother is happy Ellie finally has found a good man. Then her mother makes a discovery that make her rethink everything.
This story is definitely fast-paced. In his trademark-styles, he slices away unnecessary details and jumpers right into the action. It’s an easy read where you don’t have to think too much. I must confess to being annoyed by both Ellie and her mother for their nativity considering what they had experienced. But I let it go, because it heightened the anxiety and frustration I felt.
The last part of the book was really intense, It felt like sitting in a speeding car with a wall coming up, and you’re not sure if you will crash or not.
There was a lot to enjoy in this book, if you don’t mind some naive and impulsive choices along the way.
Thanks to netgalley and the publisher for the arc l.
Five years have passed since the ending of My Daughter's Boyfriend. Ellie has moved on and found love! She has met the Kyle, the man of her dreams and has a lovely wedding in a beautiful setting! She couldn't be happier. Her mother, Dawn, while initially happy has found a letter which has her reeling. Her handsome son-in-law is lying!
This is an addictive and binge worthy read. I enjoyed the cast of characters, the drama, and the eye rolling moments. I listened to the audiobook and enjoyed the narrators. Daniel Hurst has done it again. This was just as good as the first. I enjoyed the various POV's in the book, the mounting tension and sense of danger. Pure enjoyment. There were some twists and turns along the way with an epilogue which cannot be missed.
Enjoyable, fast paced, thrilling and dramatic.
Thank you to Bookouture Audio and NetGalley who provided me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. All the thoughts and opinions are my own.
How far would you go to protect your child? Apparently as far as it takes!
Five years after the first novel, Ellie has found the one and marries Kyle. Dawn is the beaming mother of the bride. The joy is short-lived when Dawn discovers that something doesn't add up with her son-in-law. Ellie sure knows how to pick them!😳
Meanwhile, Harvey, the father of Ellie's ex-boyfriend is out of jail and wants to settle the score for his son Daryl.
Ooh, double trouble?
This is a fun thriller. I would like to rate it higher but Ellie is so naive OMIGOSH, I want to shake some senses into her.😆 Love is blind and all that? But I'll definitely listen to book 3 if there is one.
Although My Daughter's Husband is a follow-up to "My Daughter's Boyfriend", I never felt lost. Daniel Hurst did a terrific job summing up the first novel at the beginning before continuing on with the story. It will spoil the "Boyfriend" novel if you wish to read that one later. Recommended for those who enjoy quick and twisty thrillers. 3.5⭐
I listened to this terrific audiobook, narrated by Harrie Dobby, Adam Sims, and Tamsin Kennard. I love multi-narrators that keep me from guessing PoV chapters. Also, all three read at the same speed which makes it easier for the listener not to have to adjust as we listen.
Thank you Bookouture Audio and Netgalley for the ALC. Published Nov 4, 2023! 6H 27M
Daniel Hurst has written a fast paced, action packed, can't put down novel, My Daughter's Husband. Ellie made a very poor choice with a boyfriend and her mother intervened. Then Ellie makes a poor choice with a husband who is an imposter.
The cat and mouse scenario moves at breakneck speed with each chapter presenting a different person's point of view.
Hurst is a masterful storyteller. I listened to it on audiobook and the narration by Tamsin Kennard, Harrie Dobby, and Adam Sims is superb!
Highly recommend!
Thanks to NetGalley for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
4⭐ Genre ~ psychological thriller Series ~ My Daughter's Boyfriend #2 Others in the series ~ My Daughter's Boyfriend Setting ~ England Publication date ~ November 4, 2023 Page Count ~282 (35 chapters p+e) Audio length ~ 6 hours 28 minutes Narrators ~ Tamsin Kennard, Harrie Dobby, Adam Sims POV ~ multiple 1st Featuring ~ revenge
Series notes: A good idea to read My Daughter's Boyfriend first, so you can be familiar with Ellie and Dawn and the dumb choices they made. They're not too much better in this installment.
Ellie & Dawn are back 5 years later. Ellie is set to marry Kyle, the perfect guy, or is he?
I liked that we get Harvey's POV. He's being released from the slammer for his part in what went down in the previous book. And now he's out for revenge. But who will pay the price?
Another fast paced read that'll make you want to say ugh, do you really want to do that?
Narration notes: They all did a fine job. Happy they went with an American male narrator, since he is American after all.
*Thanks to the author, Bookouture Audio and NetGalley for the audio copy. I am voluntarily leaving my honest review*
The sequel to My Daughter’s Boyfriend is everything I wanted it to be and more. This is a tale of betrayal, deceit, and revenge. Ellie has married the man of her dreams and her life seems perfect. Dawn, Ellie’s mother, is not quite as taken with her new husband and becomes suspicious. Who is this dream man, and what is he hiding? This fast-paced thriller was full of twists, turns and ended with a final jaw-dropping twist I never imagined. The narration added emotion, suspense, and intensity while bringing the story to life. Thank you NetGalley and Bookouture Audio for my audiobook.
I couldn't wait to rejoin Dawn and Ellie in this sequel. As with ever Daniel hurst audio the narrators are like an old friend returning with familiarity and purpose. The audiobstream is of high quality and the narration takes you inside the minds of the key characters the interwoven pov format hooks you in. Its a fairly quick listen which I demolished in a day. I didnt want to stop. The story was actioned packed. I loved the fact that you could just read this as a stand alone story as there is a full recap at the beginning . I enjoyed every second and i was sad when i finished. I cant recommended this enough a 5 star listen. Thank you so much netgallery and publisher and author and narrators.
ARC audiobook provided in exchange for an honest review.
I really loved the dual narration of this book! The male and female narrators worked perfectly together and it really helped to bring the story to life. I was fortunate to have also read the first book in this series which helps to set up this story but if you haven’t read the prior book, it still works well as a standalone. There were lots or twists and turns I didn’t see coming and I love the way it ended! If you like psychology thrillers, be sure to check out this series!
I actually preferred this book to the first one, although you do need to read them both. Good ending and actually felt satisfactory which is unusual I think for books these days!
Listen Mr Hurst books at this point are a guilty pleasure for me. The plot/ premise will 90% of the time be subpar, but its still entertaining in its own bizarre way. 🤷🏾 There was no depth in My Daughters Husband and it was predictable AF. Everyone is a complete dodo and common sense was not a factor whatsoever. With that said, I will keep listening to his backlist, because its become a game now in how many times I can roll my eyes with his stories! 🙄😆
REVENGE comes to mind with Daniel Hurst. He’s an expert on this subject. This is book #2 of My Daughter’s Boyfriend) A wedding in Turkey!! And then all the psychological thriller that comes next! Onto book #17 of Daniel Hurst. I think I am a bit obsessed with this author! Lol
Follow up book to ‘My Daughter’s Boyfriend’ published in June and we are 5 years on, Ellie is now getting married and the past is fading more and more into the background Harvey has not however forgotten and is intent on revenge There is plenty of reminders re the first book so can be read as a stand alone but to get the full picture I would read them in order Can so much trauma happen to one person and one family, ordinarily no of course but this is a Daniel Hurst book so it can, and it does I love the authors writing and while a good read it did push me to the edge of reading believability but hey I enjoyed it and was full on as always 🤗.
Daniel Hurst, an author who needs no introduction, has done it again! This time with a follow-up sequel to "The Daughter's Boyfriend" which I thought was OK but this one was soooo much better! In true Hurst style, it is gripping, fast paced, addictive and hard to put down. And in true Hurst style, it comes with that final twist. I devoured it in one day (not quite one sitting).
Five years have passed since the events in the first book. Ellie has moved on and found love in a handsome man who runs his own successful business. Kyle is the man of her dreams and now Dawn watches as her daughter is married in a beautiful wedding in a luxurious resort in the sun in Turkey. Neither mother or daughter could be happier.
However, the joy is shortlived when back home to reality and Dawn discovers something doesn't add up with her new son-in-law. When she catches him in a lie she offers him a lifeline to redeem himself but he only gives her even more reason to be concerned. After her experience with Daryl five years ago, Dawn felt sure that Ellie had found a good honest man in Kyle. But now it seems he pulled the wool over both their eyes.
Meanwhile back in the US, Harvey has just completed his five year stretch for perverting the course of justice in relation to his son's crimes. As Daryl was killed by Dawn in the UK, he couldn't be brought to justice for them. But now, Harvey is out and the only thing that has kept him going is the sweet taste of revenge and the score he intends on settling for his son's untimely death.
As this is the second book, I do recommend reading "My Daughter's Boyfriend" first if you wish to otherwise reading this will spoil the first. Having said that, you don't have to read the first one as this one can suffice easily as a standalone as Hurst keeps us up to date with all that went on before (hence why reading the first one before this one is recommended).
Hurst is a masterful storyteller and he keeps the reader engaged from start to finish in this cat and mouse plot tinged with revenge. And as with any Hurst thriller, it is entertaining, fast paced, thrilling and oh so dramatic. Many of the plot twists were predictable but as with Hurst's thrillers, the thrill is in the ride. And what a ride he has given us!
A quick and easy read and in his trademark style, Hurst does away with unnecessary details and gives us the bare bones to devour as we jump right into the action. I love his style because you are not weighed down with too much fact and information. He gives you all you need to know to be thoroughly entertained.
This is the follow up to My Daughter’s Husband. It’s another fast paced, enjoyable thriller.
Five years on Ellie is now getting married. The disaster of her previous relationship in the past. Mother, Dawn is over the moon that her daughter has finally found happiness … or has she?
I loved the multiple POVs, the duel threats in the storyline added to the overall compelling narrative. There were a few eye roll moments, but easily forgiven as an entertaining popcorn thriller, with lots of clever twists and turns.
The audio narration was fantastic!
Many thanks to NetGalley and Bookouture audio for ALC 🎧
Harvey, after five years in prison, has a revenge plot in mind. Harvey lost his son Daryll when his ex Ellie when killed him in self-defense during an attack. Now Ellie is about to marry Kyle, who portrays himself as a successful businessman. However, things are not what they seem and it just might be that Kyle has been lying and keeping secrets.
Ellie's mother Dawn is more than suspicious about her daughter’s new husband Kyle as apparently he has been less than honest on more than one occasion. Bottom line, she feels that he is a liar. Between Dawn's suspicions and Daryll's father Harvey seeking revenge for his son's death, the young couple's chance at happiness just might be short lived.
My Daughter's Husband was a thrilling, fast-paced read. The various points of view were done in first person, and they each had a narrator, Tamsin Kennard, Harrie Dobby and Adam Sims. This style of writing as well as the excellent narration made this book go really quickly.
This book follows My Daughter's Boyfriend by Daniel Hurst and takes place five years later. Anyone seeing a couple in love about to marry just might want the best for them, but there is a dark shadow looming with a nod to the previous book and characters, while lending itself to serious drama, done in a way that made this book impossible to put down.
Many thanks to Bookouture and to NetGalley for this ARC for review. This is my honest opinion.
Premise - A mother tries to protect her quite dumb daughter from the unfortunate romantic decisions she makes.
The story is told in multiple POVs - Dawn, the very protective mother, Ellie, the teenage-acting twenty-something, the father of the dead ex-boyfriend who tried to murder Ellie, her new husband who’s hiding his own secrets…
No one is likable. Dawn is obsessive, the guys are all evil, and Ellie is immature, lazy, and a would-be gold digger who can’t wait for her husband to “hurry up and make your millions” so he can retire her. It’s a good thing it’s told as a split narrative, because I don’t think I could stand spending an entire novel in any of their heads!
The story is fast-paced and gripping. The character voices are well done, even if the characters are caricatures - I always know who is speaking, they’re so distinct.
The ending wrap-up feels a little easy, but it’s also more realistic than a more complex ending would be so I didn’t really mind.
The book is a sequel, but I haven’t read the first book and am enjoying it anyway. The last chapters make it sound like a book three is coming and I’ll happily read it!
Fans of light reads and Judd Apatow movies (humorously dumb caricatures of female stereotypes) will enjoy this! To be clear, the guys suck in this, too.
Thanks, NetGalley and Bookouture, for the gifted ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Wow, I really loved this psychological thriller, which is the follow up to My Daughter's Boyfriend, which I also loved. In this book, we have three narrators, who were fantastic, and the whole audiobook is amazing.
The story about Dawn and her daughter Ellie continues, with Ellie now getting married to a man called Kyle. But is Kyle all he seems to be? And what shadow is lurking, ready to pounce on Dawn and Ellie once more? Dawn is a wonderful mother, and is always very protective over Ellie. I liked this about her.
Full of tension, twists, surprises and suspense, you will be thrilled and delighted with this wonder of a story. It is simply superb, and it is written well. I loved it, and I look forward to many more books by this author. I would love to see more of Dawn and Ellie, so let's hope there will be another book in this series! Highly recommended!
Many thanks to the author, publisher and NetGalley for a copy of this book.
I really enjoyed Daniel Hurst's audiobook, My Daughter's Husband. When I started the book, I became aware that this is actually the second book in a series. I have not read the first book, My Daughter's Boyfriend, but I certainly plan to now! Enough background is given in Husband that I was able to understand fully the characters and the relationships that were forged during the previous book.
My Daughter's Husband is a straightforward thriller. There are two storylines happening simultaneously, putting our main character Ellie in danger on both fronts. It is up to Ellie's mom Dawn to save her, but will she be able to in time? There are not any big twists or surprise reveals, and that's ok; I almost felt relieved to read a thriller that was not tricky.
All three narrators are easy to listen to. My Daughter's Husband is a fun, quick book. Thank you to Mr. Hurst, NetGalley, and Bookouture Audio for the opportunity to review this book.
This is my third read by this author and he never fails to disappoint! This is a second in the series (I didn’t realize this before I started reading but the author fills in the gaps and it probably is not necessary to read the first - called My Daughter’s Boyfriend).
It follows the story of Dawn and her daughter Ellie who is getting married after a relationship with a killer. Her mother Dawn initially is so happy for her daughter to finally find a good man but very quickly catches new husband, Kyle in several lies. Her friend advises her to not tell Ellie until she digs deeper herself. Across the world another man wants revenge on this family for what they took from him and he will stop at nothing to get his revenge. I don’t want to give too much away but it is filled with suspense until the very end.
Thank you @netgalley and @bookouture for an ARC to review. @danielhurstbooks #mydaughtershusband #thrillerbooks #bookstagram #bookreview
I am loving this series! Dawn is thrilled to see her daughter Ellie get married after everything she has been through. Her ex Daryll tried to kill her and Dawn ended up killing him to save her daughter. Kyle is a successful rich businessman. Dawn later finds out Kyle is lying about his success and follows him to find out the truth putting herself in danger. Then Daryll's dad Harvey is realised from prison and is seeking revenge for his sons death. A fast paced thriller that had me on the edge of my seat.
After surviving a traumatizing event that almost made her lose faith in love, Dawn's daughter, Ellie, is finally about to get her happily ever after. Dawn in beyond happy that her daughter's getting married to the man of her dreams, but her joy is short lived because she finds a strange letter and starts feeling terribly suspicious towards her new son-in-law. What is Ellie's husband hiding exactly ? And because misfortunes never come alone, Ellie's ex-boyfriend's father just got released from prison and he is determined to avenge his son.
Well, I won't say that I hated this book, but (and truthfully, I don't mean to be harsh or unkind) it was mediocre. The events of this story come 5 years after what happened in "My Daughter's Boyfriend" (that I haven't read), but one can easily read this one as a standalone, since everything that happened in the first book is explained at the beginning of this one. My main problem was that there was no real mystery, everything was out in the open or so predictable that I found myself constantly waiting for a plot twist that never came, or just ... something. We know from the beginning what everyone's role will be in the story and there is nothing to make us doubt what the ending will be.
🎧 Audiobook narration : 5/5 the narrators were perfect though, all three of them ! They really gave the rather dull story some depth and were, I believe, the main reason why I didn’t get bored.
Thank you NetGalley and Bookouture for giving me access to this audiobook for review consideration. All opinions are my own.
〝I guess a mothers love for her child really does know no bounds〞
★★★.5
ellie walks down the aisle in her full-length lace dress, beaming with happiness. as she exchanges her vows with the groom, who looks devastatingly handsome in his smart black suit, her mother hopes this time will be different… an utterly gripping psychological thriller with jaw-dropping twists.
this was a really fun read but it wasn't for me. this would be great if you like books for the plot and easy to understand thrillers. sure, I loved the family drama of it all but the characters were too superficial and naive (read stupid) for my tastes; especially since the author makes it really clear that this almost happened to the same characters just a couple years ago in the first book. like who would not be on their guard after almost getting murdered by their partner? I pretty much figured the whole thing out after the first few chapters which only made me more irritated at the character for not seeing it coming. I've read some other reviews and I understand that this is just not my genre because a lot of thriller lovers really enjoy this so take my opinion with a grain of salt unless we have similar reading tastes.
ps. if you want to read the whole series; read it in order or you'll be heavily spoiled.
thank you to netgalley and the publisher for giving me access to this arc.
4.5⭐️ Like I always say, Daniel Hurst should be on everyone's go-to for a quick but entertaining thriller.
This is indeed an utterly gripping psychological thriller with jaw-dropping twists. The twist kept on coming and coming and I was absolutely hooked! Oh and that ending blew me away.
This is a great follow up to My Daughters Boyfriend. Though you can read this as a standalone, I highly suggest reading book #1 first.
How far will a mother go to save your child?
The Mother Daugther Duo Ellie and Dawn are back again. Elie has turned life around and is now married to the handsome Kylie and things are good.
But when Dawn discover a letter that makes her heart flip she realises that her son-in-law is hiding something.. and he isnt who they thought he was. Ellie’s past is about to catch up with her, and she's certain her daughter is in danger.
Bad luck or wrong choices??
Well as her mother, she'll stop at nothing to protect her…
On the other hand, Harvey from the first book, who was in prison is about to be released and is obsessed with making this mother-daughter pay for his son's death.
I Recommend this book. With Daniel Hurst you know what you're getting yourself into which is a well written story.
Thank you NetGalley and Bookouture Audio for this Audiobook
This is the sequel to My Daughter's Boyfriend and needs to be read as such. It picks up on the story five years later, back in England where mother Dawn, and her daughter Elli return from Elli's wedding to Kyle in Turkey. Does Elli have bad luck when it comes to partners? Sure seems that way as Kyle is not all he purports to be and once again Dawn goes running to the rescue. Add to this that Harvey, the man successfully sentenced and imprisoned in the US for the felonies five years earlier has just been released and another somewhat far-fetched but nonetheless compelling story is created. 4 and a half stars.
I was excited to hear My Daughter's Boyfriend was getting a follow up book. I was looking forward to reading about Ellie's happy ever after but sadly with Ellie being so dimwitted, it wasn't to be. I couldn't believe some of the decisions she chose to make in this book. After everything she had been through, one would think she would be more vigilant in her relationship but it seems she hasn't learnt from her previous encounter.
This book was a great popcorn thriller, easy to listen to (audio was fab!) with lots of twists. It was a short book too so a quick read.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for a complimentary copy of this ALC in exchange for my honest review.
I really liked the sequel! I though it was better than the first! Poor Ellie really has horrible luck with men, but Mom is always ready to fight for her daughter! Enjoyed the twists and turns this story took! Gotta love a Daniel Hurst book! The narration was great as well!
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for this ARC in exchange for my honest opinion.
My Daughters husband, the sequel to My Daughters Boyfriend, is absolutely amazing!!! This book kept me in suspense the whole time I was reading. This captivating thriller with murder, malice and the love of a mother. How can one girl have so much bad luck with men? And could we possibly see a third book in the making?? Please!!
