Stapled Magnolias #2

Missed Sunrise

Rate this book
Fall back into the atmospheric world of Coastal Mississippi, where the charm of small-town life meets a slow-burn love story of self-worth, found family, and mutual pining.

When Cody Desmond returns to the small coastal town of Bay Springs, Mississippi after a disastrous months-long stint working aboard a cruise ship, he finds himself uncertain of his future and place in the world. With his first real relationship sunk beneath the waves and his sense of self adrift, Cody grapples with feelings of inadequacy and a gnawing fear that he may never be enough.

And with just one glimpse of Liem Lott’s mischievous smile, the stakes become even higher.

A ray of sunshine with an artist’s soul and a knack for crafting beauty from chaos, Liem and his endless reserve of kindness have been a source of peace for Cody since they first met.

With a vow to not ruin this fresh start, Cody faces an uphill struggle to prove to himself that he’s worthy of the life and love Liem offers. While Liem’s presence serves as both a guiding light and a source of temptation, Cody’s fears and old wounds cast a shadow on the possibility of a future he’s long thought out of reach.

As family emergencies and personal demons test the strength of their connection, Cody and Liem are caught in a whirlwind of right person, wrong time.

In this heartfelt sequel to Lady Luck, Lane O'Neil delivers an M/M slow-burn romance rich with small-town charm, steam, and the magic of finding love amidst life’s storms. Will Cody and Liem’s connection hold true, or will they miss their chance at the life together they’ve both been waiting for?

Missed Sunrise is a swoonworthy story of patience, healing, and the profound impact of finding the person who makes you believe in the possibilities of each sunrise.

Born, raised, and forever resident of Atlanta-ish, Georgia, Lane O’Neil loves crashing waves, characters who feel like friends, and soft blankets.

Lane rekindled her love of reading in 2021 after having her son and learning what "nap trapped" meant. That renewed spark eventually led to her to linking up with indie authors as an alpha and beta reader, which then spiraled into a crazy idea—one that had never once crossed her mind before….

What if she tried to write something?

Once her mortifying flashback to completing the writing portion of her SATs in 2009 was done, and she took a shower to wash off the nervous sweats, she opened a document and began writing.

• Book 2 in the Stapled Magnolias series. If you haven’t discovered 𝕃𝕒𝕕𝕪 𝕃𝕦𝕔𝕜, which I’ve posted about before. You really, REALLY should look into that.

• Cody & Liem, my babies, these beautiful boys. Well you know.. not just mine they’re Lanes too 😂 We’ve known them since Book 1 and they’ve burrowed into your heart and mind since then. Watching their story and them intertwine, was honestly 𝔼𝕍𝔼ℝ𝕐𝕋ℍ𝕀ℕ𝔾. They make you feel so much, which should be expected if you know their characters. Such deep, honest, and thoughtful men. Both have battled with their own fair share of issues. Both so protective of each other in their own ways. When they finally “get together” you’re kicking and giggling. Some may think it’s slow, but it’s necessary for their story. And if you know them, it makes all the sense and makes it all the more meaningful.

• Also, loved to see our other babies Bree and Vinh, and the rest of the familiar faces. They truly are the best book “family.” There is a loss I wasn’t expecting, but this is inevitable and realistic. 💔

• 𝕋𝕙𝕖 𝔼𝕡𝕚𝕝𝕠𝕘𝕦𝕖 𝕨𝕒𝕤 𝕞𝕒𝕘𝕚𝕔, 𝕒𝕟𝕕 𝕙𝕒𝕕 𝕞𝕖 𝕤𝕞𝕚𝕣𝕜𝕚𝕟𝕘 𝕝𝕚𝕜𝕖 𝕒 𝕥𝕠𝕥𝕒𝕝 𝕗𝕠𝕠𝕝.

• I want to shout it from the mountain tops for you to read this, start with the first book obviously, it’s a must. But there are few books that reach the depth for me that these books do. Lanes writing is gorgeous, touching, and captures you in like a welcoming hug with a group of friends/family you didn’t know you needed or had.

I took me a long time to get to this book because I knew from the author that it’s the second part in her series, and the previous one wasn’t M/M but M/F. I also knew from the author that the characters from this book appear and actually meet in the previous part. With that knowledge, I wasn’t particularly tempted to start reading, but I finally gave it a go. And this is how it turned out: I had a really hard time fully immersing myself in the story. The characters who appeared had clearly been introduced earlier, already knew each other, and had established relationships, while I felt like I’d been thrown into a completely foreign world, helplessly looking around like a lost child in the fog.

This feeling lasted through roughly a quarter of the book. I pushed through the beginning purely by sheer force of will. That’s why I immediately recommend starting with part one and only then moving on to part two. Otherwise, if you, like me, struggle with focusing on too many threads at once, you might feel like you’ve been dropped into the middle of the story instead of at the beginning.

Eventually, though, I started to feel the story, and I must give credit to the author: the chemistry between the characters was very interesting and fairly well-developed. However, I’m not a fan of her dialogue style—I prefer more dialogue tags, and without them, some conversations felt a bit dry to me. That said, because the story is built gradually, the chemistry was established in a solid way.

I especially want to praise the sex scenes—they’re really well done, long, and detailed, but also very romantic. To me, that’s probably the biggest highlight of this story: the intimacy between the protagonists is so beautifully portrayed that it’s essentially the essence of the entire narrative, at least for me, as I was mostly waiting for the development of their relationship.

My rating for this story would probably be a five if it weren’t for that initial difficulty. So, for those who’ve read the first part, you can confidently pick up this book because you’ll be properly immersed in this world. However, reading the second part first definitely requires some effort, which might lead some readers to abandon it early on.

That said, this is a nicely written romantic story full of touching moments, challenges, very slow burn, and definitely deserves attention. Therefore, I think that even if you’re not typically into M/F romances, to give this one a fair chance, try to read the first part first and then move on to the second for the full effect. That way, your rating will surely be higher.

This is a review based on the ARC version, though I added it quite late 😕

(3.5/5) I was expecting a bit more angst. The trigger warnings and the author's note promised a lot of angsty thoughts from the characters, but I didn't think it was that intense. It didn’t bother me too much, though.

His doubts were as beautiful to me as his body because even though they came from his beautiful mind, they stemmed from his heart. And what a gorgeous heart it was, even as he shielded it from the world.

The story about two young men who slowly fall in love was relatively poetic and overall rather beautiful (if not lengthy). I quite liked it.

I previously DNF'ed this because I couldn't understand much of it. So do keep in mind that it's kinda mandatory to read the first volume if you want to immerse yourself in the story properly.

The story was very cute and calming and I enjoyed it all the way through. The reason why I gave it 3* instead of a higher score is because it was bit...passive.

I wouldn't call it boring, but it's definitely a slice of life with no drama (unless you count Cody's existential crisis as a drama). It's more of a journey to self discovery and a very natural continuation of the first volume. There are some unanswered questions I have though like what was AJ's purpose in this whole series and did Jeanne get rid of that husband of hers but whatever, I'm nitpicking.

“If supporting him was an accomplishment, then loving Liem Lott was an honor.”

If I can’t have a love like Liem and Cody’s I don’t want one.

I apologise for posting this review late; I didn’t realise how some of the content might affect me, so it took me longer to read than the suggested timeframe and I apologise for that, but:

I really, really loved Missed Sunrises.

I loved Lane’s introduction to the book with the content warnings. I always think that’s so incredibly thoughtful and respectful towards readers and I can’t thank Lane enough for providing them!

What I really loved about Missed Sunrises was how character driven it was. There was a plot, but it took the back seat to the characters and their development. It felt like getting to know loved ones on a deeper level. I don’t know how to describe it really, I just know it felt like coming home.
I really do wish I’d read Bree’s book first because then I would have felt that familial connection with ALL of the characters, rather than just with Liem and Cody, but it was still perfect on its own.
Lane really could not have written two more gorgeous characters for me to be introduced to.

I adore that all the characters acknowledge their past trauma and their present triggers. It’s not glossed over as something eh experienced in the past, it’s explored in such a healthy way.
As someone who struggles with PTSD, coupled with anxiety and depression, it’s cathartic (if heartbreaking) to see my own struggles represented by so many different characters. It gives me the courage to continue to focus on my own trauma and triggers.

The ‘right person, wrong time’ trope hurts my heart on the best of days (in the best of ways), but I understood it with Liem and Cody. Of course, not everyone is the same, but these two darlings needed to find themselves and their peace before they committed themselves to each other. And it was beautiful to witness the moments each of them realised they were ready to make a forever promise to one another.
The slow burn really was slow burnin’ though. The anticipation and the will-they-won’t-they in each moment was delicious.

Liem is a soft, sweet natured character, but he’s so especially soft for Cody. He would tell him anything, give him anything, do anything for him. He’s sunshine and calm personified. The perfect juxtaposition to chaotic black cat Cody. Actually, Cody is exactly the same for Liem (and Bree). He’s a prickly little cactus in the outside when he’s uncomfortable, but he’s so, so soft for the people he trusts.

For me, Missed Sunrises wasn’t just about the romance or the smut or the happy ending; it was about the intimate connection between two people. It was watching them grow separately and with each other. It was the persistent feeling of knowing everything would be okay - for these character and for myself. It was perfect. Lane O’Neil truly has a gift.

“Because here, with Liem... This was what I’d been searching for. This was home now, and I would never leave it. And I would never be without him again if I could help it.”

I have to write this while I cry because I swear, I was NOT prepared for how sweet Cody and Liem would be. I KNEW they’d be perfect, but this is a whole different level.

If you read Lady Luck, you’ll be pleased to know you get plenty of Bree and the entire Lott family, while getting the added bonus of Cody and Liem’s story😭 As with the first book, there’s a lot of real-life issues thrown in, making the read feel truthful and realistic. However, the romance in this one shines just as much, if not even more so, than in Lady Luck. Cody being a big old softie for Liem is everything I ever needed in life.

I couldn’t put it down. I tried to savor it, but savoring a Lane O’Neil novel is not easy. You’re drawn into the setting and the characters. They feel like your family by the time you’re finished, and you immediately want to pick back up from the beginning just to experience the read again.

I’m so so happy I could ARC read for this, and I can’t wait to own a physical copy to cherish forever. 😭❤️

Another home run by Lane O’Neil. I am hard pressed to pick between Missed Sunrise and Lady Luck for which is best, because this one is on the same level of quality as her debut novel - which is level 10 amazing!

One of my favorite things, is when you read the authors personality on the page. The Lady Luck recap at the beginning just screamed of Lane and it gives you that feeling of approachability with the author. It gives that feeling that if she were talking to me about what has happened in the previous book and what you need to be aware of before starting this book, this is exactly how she would say it to me. It just gives a level of comfort that makes reading the story even more enjoyable; when you can feel the author through their work.

The story itself was, as usual, incredible. From start to finish, the complexity of the characters and their relationships shines so brightly. Lane does a spectacular job of giving each individual character (even the minor ones) so much depth and so much feeling that you can truly see what a gift she has for writing. She touches on topics that are incredibly difficult, but does it in a way that brings such hope to the reader. She lets you feel the despair and devastation that are a normal part of life, but she also brings in the hope and beauty that is also ever present if we surround ourselves with the right people.

As someone who is walking her own healing journey, this book truly resonated in my soul. I didn’t actually shed any tears (big surprise for me!), but it sure got me in all the feels. It (not for the first time with her writing) made me feel seen and made me feel valued in a way that you don’t always get in every day life, let alone from the books you read. But when this phenomenon occurs, you know you’ve found a kindred spirit in an author.

Cody and Liem deserved their story to be told, and Lane did them justice. She gave 2 boys with all their flaws and blemishes the chance to love each other in the most beautiful and healthy way. And the wait was absolutely worth it.

I loved Liem in LL and a whole book dedicated to him finding happiness did NOT disappoint.

The emotional awareness throughout this story was wonderful. Even though Cody wasn’t always emotionally MATURE, he was always aware of himself.

The care and patience and the wanting to be the best version of himself before giving himself to Liem was my favorite part - the fact that there was no ill-intent and he knew it would be forever once he was ready. The honesty and the ability for the two of them to openly express themselves was wonderful.

The ending made me so sad. WHY. 😭 The Lott family has only ever been kind to us. I’d love for more Monny and Cara and Ari, but that’s my only complaint. I love them so much.

✨ Missed Sunrise by Lane O'Neil ✨

There’s nothing quite like a slow-burn, mutual-pining romance that hits you straight in the heart! Cody and Liem’s story swept me away, and let’s just say, I wasn’t ready. Nope. Not even close.

From the start, this book had me feeling all kinds of ways. Imagine me, blasting “Mind Over Matter” by Young the Giant, giggling like an absolute fool, and yes—kicking my feet on more than one occasion.

With their banter and raw emotions, Missed Sunrise is like poetry and humor came together to create a beautifully chaotic love story. Cody, our intense black cat who struggles with self-worth, and Liem, the artistic and mischievous sunshine with a heart of gold. I'm so in love with them it hurts.

“Show me your hands, Liem.”
I rotated my hands and lifted my palms in offering, of what I wasn’t sure. But it didn’t matter. He could have it.

Cody’s quiet strength and devotion made me fall in love with him instantly. He’s vulnerable, but fiercely loyal—and the way he sees Liem? Chef’s kiss.

Liem.
Ti Bet.
My Little Beast.

“I'm not good at remembering things, Liem, except when it comes to you.”

I saw Liem-real, live and here Liem. My breathing malfunctioned as I took him in, and then it stopped altogether.

And then there’s Liem, who’s got his own scars, his own struggles. Their journey isn’t just about romance, it’s about healing, finding self-worth, and realizing that sometimes, the best things in life are worth the wait because, Fortune Favors the Patient.

Cody. Sunscreen and lip balm. Vulnerable and reticent. Loyal and exacting. Intense. Keen but somehow utterly unaware.

The first time I heard Cody Desmon’s voice, the world started to turn a little differently.

How could I ever express such a taste on paper? On canvas?

It’s funny, it’s tender, and it’s so beautifully written that every scene feels like a work of art. I’ve never rooted so hard for two characters to find happiness—not just with each other, but within themselves too.

“What happens tomorrow?”
“Another sunrise.” 🌅💛

If you love a slow-burn with emotional depth, playful banter, and a story that feels like pure poetry, Missed Sunrise is absolutely for you.
It’s the kind of book you finish and immediately want to start again.

Lane O’Neil is the Queen of heartwarming stories. She has such a way of writing her characters that you feel like you really know them. You feel their pain, you feel their senses of humor (all of them have great senses of humor btw), you feel their joy. You can count on Lane for a laugh and for a cry. The journey you take with these beloved characters might be bumpy as they navigate life’s obstacles, and your heart might break at times… but by the end, your heart is singing. 💜🎵

Such was the case for Lady Luck (Lane’s debut novel and first book of this Stapled Magnolias series), and such was the case for this book - Missed Sunrise, Book 2 of the Stapled Magnolias series.

Cody and Liem are the sweetest. I was always a Cody fan, and I was always a Liem fan, but I wasn’t originally a Cody-Liem fan. Well… I can safely say I’m a convert. They are perfect for each other, and I’m a glad these two got their happy ending together. They deserve it.

Aside from the romance, there is so much to love about this book:
👉The small, coastal town gave serious Gilmore Girls vibes (that gazebo in the center of town!)
👉The Lott family (seriously, can I join them?!)
👉The food!!! (Don’t read this book hungry 😹)
👉The jokes (they abound)
👉The sunrises 🌅
👉The individual healing journeys of both MCs 💜

In conclusion, run don’t walk to get your copy. Lane has hit another home run.

(This review is coming from someone who has never read an M/M romance before. If that’s you too, this is the perfect one to start with. If that’s not you, this is the perfect one to continue with.)

I fell in love with Cody and Liem in Lady Luck and I am so excited their story is out now it is so amazing and such a heartwarming story. I did not think it was possible to love these two more, as well as love Vinh and Bree more but it has been done.

You can read this as a standalone, I am glad I read Lady Luck first it gives more background and will have you understand why these two are so perfect for each other. This is a story of healing through friendship and love.

As a born and raised Cajun I would smile so big when Cody would talk but when I saw couyon I did not need to be told that Cody was Cajun. Cody is loyal to his friends but he does have thoughts of not feeling enough and worries of abandonment. While Liem is sunshine and on the outside lives in the moment, you learn that he does have his own worries mainly with his family.

The connection between these two will have you in a puddle because they are too perfect. I don’t want to give too much away but the quote “If I love you, Liem, will you ever let me go?” absolutely broke me.

~~What to Expect~~
🎨MM Romance
🎨Friends to Lovers
🎨Mutual Pining
🎨No 3rd Act Breakup
🎨Character Driven Healing
🎨Found Family
🎨Small Town
🎨Slow Burn

~~Quote~~
🧡I was gone from the moment I heard your sweet voice Liem, but I was doomed the first time you touched me.
🧡If I love you Liem will you ever let me go? Never
🧡There’s nowhere more important than being here with you, LL. That’s a forever truth.

We first met Cody and Liem in Lane's debut novel Lady Luck (so good btw). That's also where we fell in love with them as side characters and needed to know more. I certainly know I wasn't the only one rooting for them to get together even then. So imagine my happiness when Lane decided to expand this world she created into more.

In book two of Stapled Magnolias we get to see more of how Cody and Liem first connected and how their story evolves into more. I'm all for a super spicy romance read but there's definitely something to be said about a sweet slow burn journey like this one. All the sweet secret looks, stolen moments, and that good get-to-know-you build-up. Loved it!

Cody is back in town after a breakup. He's home but still feeling a bit left out of the found family his best friend Bree has built around her. He's trying to find his footing with his dad and find direction for his future. And he can't help but be curious about the guy he met through his online class that's also his best friend's brother.

Liem is dealing with some residual trauma after the incident with Bree. He's working through his emotions and finding his groove through his art. And he's just as curious about Cody. Liem is this calming presence for everyone while also bringing that loveable lighthearted fun.

I loved these two just as much as I loved Bree and Vinh. I definitely recommend this world if you're looking for that warm, feel-good type of romance. I want more. Like maybe Cody's dad or maybe even Ace needs a redemption love story too. Hint hint, Lane!

𝕬𝖚𝖙𝖍𝖔𝖗: Lane O’ Neil
𝕭𝖔𝖔𝖐 𝕿𝖎𝖙𝖑𝖊: Missed Sunrise
𝕽𝖆𝖙𝖎𝖓𝖌: 5 stars
𝕿𝖗𝖔𝖕𝖊𝖘: Small town, very slow-burn, adorable nicknames :P, Mutual pining.

Words can hardly capture their dynamic; you must dive into the book to appreciate their adoration and admiration for each other.

I loved the book. It was an easy read, and Liem and Cody captured my heart and soul. Their pining for each other stemmed from the calmness and comfort each brings when they are together.

Liem was very patient. God, he was such a sweetheart, and God bless him. When he opened up, he was adorable and slightly mischievous, which was a treat to watch. Oops, read* (It feels like I visualized their entire journey, lol)

And, Cody. Damn, he had a tough time growing up. I felt for him. It was excruciating to see him thinking so low of himself. But he was getting there, healing, and being a better person to himself and his partner. He needed motivation to get through these times, and Liem helped him figure it out.

They were both each other’s pillars. I loved that about the story, as well as how kind and understanding the characters were. It just felt like a warm hug.

I cannot wait to reread the story and am so excited about its release. Do give it a try if you like small-town, slow-burn romance that feels like a warm hug.

Thank you for the ARC, @authorlaneoneil and @lovenotes.pr , I am so grateful to be able to read it and live through their journey. All the good luck to you! I will forever adore both Dezi and LL.

This fantastic book will be released on Nov 22, 2024. :) Happy reading!

Languid an lyrical. Missed Sunrise will put you through an emotional ringer - in the best possible way.
Finishing a six-month cruise contract, Cody is back in Bay Springs and trying to figure out what’s next.
Liem is there, and the possibility of what they could be is just within reach.
These men are young, but there’s so much growth. This book will make you laugh and then hit you with an unexpected gut punch that sends the story in another direction.
This is book two, but Lane does such a wonderful job bringing you up to speed. I didn’t feel I lost anything by not reading the first book.
Riverboats, casinos, and cruise ships set the stage for the town.
Liem is such an intriguing character. The voice of an angel, a kind-hearted, tattooed artist. I loved how he interacted with people - sometimes tenderly, others incredibly awkward. He was so wonderfully real.
And Cody had been through so much, shrouded in guilt over things in his past. But goodness does he care for those in his life - even if his mother’s abandonment has left deep scars.
Cody slowly reconnecting with his father was one of my favorite subplots.
This is a slow burn - perfect for the slow as molasses southern charm that wafts off the pages.
And pining. So. Much. Pining.
You will root so hard for Liem and Cody, knowing the time it takes them to figure things out is paved with healing, acceptance, and patience.
If you like friends to lovers, found families, and food as a love language definitely check this out.

Missed Sunrise by Lane O’Neil

This was such a sweet, slow-burn romance that hits all the right notes for anyone who loves emotional depth and southern charm. Cody Desmond returns to his small Mississippi hometown after a failed stint on a cruise ship, and he’s left reeling—feeling lost, uncertain, and not quite good enough. But then enters Liem Lott, the artist with a smile that could melt anyone’s heart, and the story takes off.

What I loved most about this book is the emotional maturity. Cody may be figuring out his life, but he’s so aware of his emotions and his need for growth before he can fully open himself up to Liem. The way they communicate—honestly, openly—just makes their connection feel real and earned. Liem’s kindness, patience, and sometimes awkward tenderness are a perfect match for Cody’s guilt and baggage, creating this slow-burn dynamic that makes you ache for them to get together.

This book has it all—heart, humor, and moments that punch you right in the feels. The small-town setting with its riverboats, casinos, and charm is like a character itself, and the stakes feel real, especially with the complications of family, self-doubt, and past trauma. You’ll root for Cody and Liem hard, because you know they’re meant to be, even if they’re not ready yet. It’s the kind of romance that’ll make you swoon and then leave you shattered, all while showing the power of healing and second chances.

I received an ARC of Missed Sunrise in exchange for an honest review. This review will be as spoiler-free as I can make it.

Starting with Lady Luck, The Stapled Magnolias series is worming its own special place into my heart. Liem and Cody are characters we meet in Lady Luck and they are beautifully expanded in Missed Sunrise.

For me, Liem and Cody were an unexpected yet perfect match. Liem is confident, friendly, and always wanting to make his world brighter in some way. With some therapy under his belt, Liem is guided to put his difficult emotions on canvas to process them there. Cody sees himself as broken, flawed, and good for nothing. He struggles with his trauma and self-doubt alone, keeping most of his emotions inside, not wanting anyone else to have to deal with them. Despite it all, Liem sees the good in Cody, despite the latter's inability to see the good in himself.

Tropes I Loved in This Book:
- Small Town
- Best Friend's Best Friend
- Found Family
- Hurt/comfort
- Mental Health Rep
- LGBTQ+ Rep
- Slow Burn

I really enjoyed this read. If you like books with a writing style that feels like a warm seat by the fireplace with a hot chocolate and with characters that will live in your head rent-free, this one is for you.

Why I rated 4/5 stars despite my love for the book: This book is marketed as an interconnected standalone, but I believe in order to truly understand all of the main and side characters in this book, it's important to start with Lady Luck and then progress into Missed Sunrise.

What do I say about this masterful novel? This is book 2 in the Stapled Magnolias series, but you don’t have to read book 1 to understand what is going on. Let me say, I seldom read M/M romance, but this was worth it. Honestly, I read it because I love Liem and fell in love with him in Lady Luck. I had to see how his story continued and shaped. I was NOT disappointed. I have so many images in my head now of Liem and Cody and how their relationship developed over time. It’s a slow burn and I loved and enjoyed every single minute of it. I also began to really enjoy Cody. I now call him my birthday twin, because we share the same birthday…Capricorns unite!

I also fell in love with Bay Springs. And boy did I find all the Easter eggs I was warned about. See, I went to a book signing a few months ago and a few places are based off of a small Georgia town. Just made me connect with the book even more because I could imagine myself there again. Liem is still by far one of my favorite characters, it’s just something about his free spirit. After reading the novel, I now feel the need to create, or paint, or by golly build a frame! I’m also pretty sure I’m also going to be requesting biscuits from my husband in the coming weeks. There’s just something about some good ole southern biscuits. Born and raised southern girl here, so yeah.

Thanks for the ARC!

OMG, just wonderful

After reading Lady Luck, I knew I had to read this one. Boy, am I glad I did. I love the writing style so much. There's no hurry to get to the end and a great thing.

Liem is such a great character. He's kind and patient. He's very helpful like a teacher. He does have some anxiety where his family is concerned. He worries after what happened with his brother, Vinh, awhile ago. He is there for Cody, and it is beautiful how he helps him. I also love the way he talks, Heavens.

Cody came back from the cruiseship, and you can tell he's broken by something. He struggles because he wasn't there for his best friend Bree when she was hurt. He has a hard time also because of his past on people leaving him. He is always scowling and tense, and Liem is there to help him.

The two of them are doing different things but seem to Come back to each other to be friends and be there as a rock for each other. Will there be more for the two of them? You need to read to find out. I loved seeing Bree and Cody's friendship in this book and also Vinh again. Such great characters! I don't want to put too much more and give anything away. This book had me weeping at parts and swooning at others. Definitely read.

It has taken me the better back of the last 18 hours to process this book and find the words to review it. But in the best way!! Lady Luck is one of my favorite books, and Missed Sunrise has lived up to the hype so well!! I loved Liem and Cody so much! Cody was such a beautiful, tortured soul and wanted so badly to shake him until he could accept the love and support from the people around him who love him so well! And Liem with his damn breathing exercises just did my poor heart in! The way that Liem saw the world, and his artist's heart and descriptions of his world made me cry over and over! These boys ripped my heart up and put it back together so expertly! And getting to see their lives intertwine so perfectly with Bree and Vinh just made my heart swell! Overall, this was such a beautiful story, with wonderfully tortured MC's, that will absolutely send you on an emotional rollercoaster! I can't overstate how amazing these books from Lane O'Neil are!! 5 stars; 3 chili peppers

Tropes:
- Slow Burn
- Tortured MC's
- Grumpy x Sunshine
- Hurt/Comfort
- Right Person, Wrong Time

Loved these guys!
I was ramped up to read this after reading Lady Luck and feel for both of these characters.
Once again, a story about found family, conquering your inner insecurities, and finding yourself all while having someone supportive and loving stand by your side.
Beautiful backdrops of the Gulf area and also a few sunrises (lol).
Loved the scene with Cody and Liem taking a "break" from work.... steamy!
Sadly it didn't get the full 5 stars for the following 3 reasons:
1 - I loved the sass and sarcasm both Cody and Liem had in Lady Luck but seemed to have lost a bit of it in this story. Don't know if that is because we are getting deeper than witty and charming facades or not.
2 - I wanted to see more of the friendship bond between Bree and Cody. Though from a distance, Cody was still trying his best to be there for Bree in Lady Luck and I felt she wasn't there as much for Cody.
3 - Sometimes I just wanted Cody to stop with the self-negativity and feel the love (but I recognize that's more a me thing than fault with the book).
Otherwise, I really love the types of relationships explored in this series and can't wait for more!

I really enjoyed the author’s writing and unique turn of phrase, and they write big emotions authentically. I didn’t read the first book, which I think made it a bit challenging to jump into Liem and Cody’s story. I definitely had the sense I came into the middle of a story and had to play catch up with lots of side characters I didn’t know or care about. What worked the most for me is that the two MCs are genuinely lovely together and I appreciate Cody wanting to better himself before he commits to Liem. That’s admirable and interesting. They are both so easy to root for and I was happy they got the HEA they deserve. It took so long though, and there’s just too much external drama around them for my taste. This felt just so very slow to me as I wasn’t invested in the stuff outside of Liem and Cody’s relationship. I also really didn’t enjoy Cody’s friendship with Bree at all, and there’s a lot of it here. I liked the couple, just wish there was more focus on them.

I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book

Cody & Liem
I have to admit that I struggled a bit to get into this book. While it's stated that you're not required to have read the book preceding this one, it's clearly recommended as it helps for a lot more context to the conversations between characters. The book seemed a bit too verbose for me, which I thought was odd because I really enjoy intelligently-written stories. I think it ended up just wordy enough that I got lost a few times in the dialogue and the characters' inner monologues. I applaud the author's intellectual quality in the story, and the obvious emotional maturity she gifted to the different characters in the story, especially Liem.

The characters were incredibly bumbling and sweet, and the plot was very solid and strong. It's clearly a very lovable book, it was simply one I personally had a tougher time reading. If I had read and enjoyed the first book in the series, I might have personally had an easier time making my way through this book.

I received an advance copy of this book and am volunteering my honest review.

Tropes: MM Romance, Slow Burn, coastal small town

Oh goodness I loved this read! When I read Lane O'Neil's debut, Lady Luck, I fell a bit in love with Liem and couldn't help but root for happiness for him.

Missed Sunrise was such a pleasant read because of how realistic it was. There are lovely hints of right person, wrong time where you find yourself really just rooting for these characters, their growth as individuals, and a relationship between them.

The characters have so much depth and you get a look into characters who are realistic instead of the stereotypical perfect book boyfriends. You get to watch them as they evolve into their more mature and self loving individuals!

For me this wasn't a book that I sat down and consumed in a single sitting. It was one that kept me focused so I could savor Liem and Cody's lives and the intertwining together over time.

Really enjoyed this read and it certainly got me thinking about stairwells ;).

“Liem, I want to be with you. Near you. Inside you. But more importantly, I want to do everything with you. Everything, Liem. See every sunrise, some sunsets. Help at Ari’s, get to know your family more. Introduce you to my dad. I want to consume you. I have things I want to tell you. Things to show you, to make my intentions clear.”

I loved reading Cody and Liem’s story. Watching them fall in love was so sweet and honestly a healing journey.
Cody has been in a rough mental state for so long and we don’t see that until we get to his book. We knew him as the supportive best friend of Bree in Lady Luck. He really represented what all those a like to be happy, caring, and giving on the outside but battling emotionally on the inside.
Liem has a personality you can’t help but love. He’s funny, caring, and sees people for who they really are. He is literally the perfect person for Cody. He was such a big part of Cody’s healing.
Cody finding himself and his self worth was the best thing to read.

I had been looking forward to Cody and Liem’s story from the moment I finished Lady Luck and Miss Lane, you did NOT disappoint! Liem has such a pure, genuine soul and his patience while Cody did the work he needed to do to feel worthy of Liem and his love is so powerful. Learning about Cody’s childhood was heartbreaking but taking the journey with him to heal those wounds made my heart feel so full for him. Witnessing the two of them grow closer and closer while taking the necessary time to make sure that what they have would be a forever truth was absolutely glorious.

I found myself smiling so often while reading this story that I’m sure I looked unwell to the people around me whenever I read in public and I am absolutely fine with that! I didn’t think their story would too Bree and Vinh’s but it does. I could read both books over and over and never grow tired of them, but Missed Sunrise has my full heart and soul!

4.5 rounded up

The first thing that caught my attention here is the brief summary from book one included in the beginning. I've never seen this before with an MM book that is part of an MF series/came after an MF. And since I didn't read book one, though I do have it, I found this helpful.

Now, this book started off slow. For me, at least. But it didn't take too long for the story to pull me in. And it's such a sweet story. Seeing the two MCs, especially Cody, work through insecurities. Cody comes off of a break up and having a lot of thoughts where he's not good enough. But Liem knows that's not true. He's patient with Cody and the wait is worth it.

The same could be said for their HEA. This one is a slow burn, but the tension makes it worth it, and there is a lot of it. Making that moment when they do finally get together so good.

All in all, I adored Liem and Cody. I can't wait to have them on my shelf as soon as I'm able to.

4⭐️ for Missed Sunrise by @authorlaneoneil Ok the Liem and Cody are such beautiful characters. While reading, I felt like I was transported to a different time. The affection in which those two spoke about each other was remarkable. I loved the found family both of these men found, but the connection with their blood relatives, especially Cody and his reconnection with his dad was wonderful. My only issue with this read was I became a little lost at times. There were some questions I had, that I didn’t get the answers to. Now, this could have 100% been on me. There were times I skimmed, but I found myself having to reread a bit. I think it was a me issue and not a writing issue. I definitely think reading Lady Luck first would have helped. Again, a me issue, but I’m definitely adding it to my TBR. All in all, this was a beautifully written story with exceptional character development!

Lane knocks it out of the park again with her delicious slow burn and abundantly honest romances.

Liem and Cody's story is perfected through NORMALCY. In an age where romance novels are getting ridiculous - there is no silly drama here, no third act breakup, just honest people working through life separately and learning to do the same together. This is a story that offers realistic scenarios and pure love that will leave you teary eyed.

The romance is indeed slow to start but once it does, the spice is in high gear. Though it remains respectful and full of tenderness. I just love C&L so much!

Missed Sunrise was my first M/M romance, and it did not disappoint. Don't hesitate if you haven't read it before either, this is the perfect way to ease in. The plot nor drama center around the fact that the characters are gay.

This is a romance unlike any I've read before. The characters have both embarked on their respective journeys of self-discovery and healing. It is a romance steeped in restorative growth.

One of the things I loved about this story is that it is more realistic. Most normal relationships don't start with two perfect individuals, as people, we are inherently flawed, and it's great that these characters know they carry their own trauma and are taking steps to remedy this.

That being said, I enjoyed the sense of family within their group. Each main character stands out on their own. With several memorable side characters.

This story was a slow burn, but once we got to the open door romance, it was blazing. All in all, a great read!

Missed Sunrise is a wonderfully emotional MM romance.

The story follows Cody and Liem as they navigate life and all its hurdles. In the midst of family emergencies and emotions they form a strong connection.

This is a slow burn romance and I mean slow. But when these two are in the vicinity of each other sparks fly. The graze of a hand. A look. There is so much tension and tenderness between the two. You are just waiting for their next interaction.

This book deals with big emotions. Cody, fails to see his self worth. You feel his pain and fears. Liem is Cody's light amongst his darkness. Their connection was truly beautiful.

I highly recommend this book.

Thank you to LoveNotes PR and the author for an ARC of this title.
