Nothing is as life changing as those two pink lines, especially when getting pregnant wasn’t on your life itinerary.
Darcy Adler has always felt like the black sheep of her family. Her siblings were outgoing, successful, literally saving lives, while she was a personal trainer who would rather be at home eating ice cream, her nose buried in a smutty romance novel. She was a lot of things, but mother material? Not so much. And there was another problem— the dad could be one of two a recently engaged lawyer, or Archer Mack.
Archer moved to Gettysburg, PA to get a fresh start away from his past. Most of his days were spent at the firehouse, whether he was working or not, because he had his sights set on the Lieutenant position. When the fire chief tells Archer he wants him for the job, it’s almost too good to be true. And that’s because it is. There’s a catch: he needs to prove he has a life outside of fighting fires to get it.
With Darcy not wanting to be the family screw up yet again, and Archer desperate to get the promotion of his dreams, the two agree to a plan. Fake date long enough for Darcy’s pregnancy to not seem like another one of her mistakes, and for Archer to get promoted.
But as the two are forced together, truths are revealed, and faking it until they make it gets a lot more complicated.
The Backdraft features Darcy, the “black cat” of her family, and Archer, a hot firefighter with a dark past, who have a one-night stand that ends in two pink lines. So when Darcy needs support to break the big news to her family and Archer needs to project stability to his boss to be promoted to lieutenant, the two agree to fake date. But what starts as a means to an end soon turns into something much more real.
This was a great small-town romance with a classic premise that still felt fresh thanks to well-rounded, engaging characters. The writing flows smoothly, the dialogue feels natural, and the pacing is steady throughout. The banter is witty and there’s just enough emotional depth to balance out the lighter moments and keep the story grounded. My only wish was for a few more interactions between Darcy and Archer, and between Archer and her family to flesh out those dynamics even more.
Though it’s a quick read (I finished it in a day!), the story feels complete and satisfying. If you’re in the mood for a fun, heartfelt, and fast-paced accidental pregnancy romance, The Backdraft is for you!
Thank you to author Amanda Pinkerman for the ARC. All opinions are my own.
4.25 stars! The Backdraft was the perfect romance novel to pull me out of my fantasy-reading bubble. I thoroughly enjoyed Archer and Darcy’s story…Which was surprising considering that accidental pregnancy is not one of my favorite tropes. But when you mix that with fake dating, a hot and grumpy firefighter like Archer, and genuinely good writing, you end up with a well-done, thoroughly enjoyable read! I literally read it in one day and could not put it down!
Argh I loved this story between Darcy and Archer. A shorter, sweet read. Darcy and Archer went to school together and vaguely remember each other when they meet again at a pub and have a steamy bathroom hook up. This hook up results with a pregnancy and a fake turned real relationship. All the feels and HEA.
Thank you for the arc opportunity bookfunnel and Amanda.
As soon as I picked this book up, I had difficulty putting it down! I ended up finishing it in a few days, and couldn't get enough. It is a sweet, slow burn, small town romance.
The banter, the constant teasing, and the chemistry between these two are off the scale!! I love how Archer calls Darcy "Brat" and how they deliberately push each other's buttons! But what I love the most is how they lift each other up, and see the sides that no one else sees.
Archer Mack is a grumpy firefighter with a traumatic past. I felt so sorry for him. How the pain he endured during his childhood, still had a strong hold over his adulthood. Which led him to believe that he didn't deserve to be a father. That he wasn't good enough. I just wanted to hug him!! Even though there was a possibility that the baby wasn't his, he reassured Darcy that he would treat them like his own. I was rooting for him the whole time!
Darcy Adler is a fitness instructor, who accidentally becomes pregnant. She is unsure of who the father is and is determined to work it out. I really admire her strength. How she is willing to raise the baby by herself. I love her sassy side and how she always makes a point to wind Archer up, but knows when to stop.
As soon as Liam was introduced, I hated him. So much. He is rude, arrogant, and his behaviour is appalling and despicable. I prayed he wasn't the father.
My favourite side character is Shayna, without a shadow of a doubt. She is absolutely hilarious!! I was cackling every time she spoke! Especially at her suggestive jokes that she wasn't shy to make in front of a certain someone!
I loved this story! It had me kicking my legs in the air, wanting to shake some sense into people, and it had me laughing until my cheeks hurt!! Great writing, lovely characters, and a perfect ending.

Many thanks to Amanda Pinkerman for this advanced reader copy!
I received an ARC of the yet to be released book The Backdraft by Amanda Pinkerman for an honest review.
First off, it's been a while for me since I have read a romance novel that was not in a fantasy setting. I really enjoyed the small town vibe. It was refreshing, I did not know I needed this 300-page break.
The two main characters, Darcy and Archer, are very opposite on the first glance, but looking deeper into the characters, they have a lot of common traits. Even if she sees herself as the family screw up. She is actually very determined in what she's doing and just doubts herself too much. Archer is successful in his job as a firefighter , but also is very stuck in his head and very much afraid of making mistakes and letting others around him down , especially also himself and his own set standards and rules.
Needless to say, after a one-night stand with consequences, those two worlds collide, and it does not go well.
With a promotion on the horizon for Archer, and Darcys fear of disappointing her family, both come up with a plan to pretend to be a couple and help each other out in this way. What could go wrong? Turns out, just everything.
Between doctor appointments , family gatherings, and firestation dance nights, both of them have to learn that there is more to the other than they originally thought. I enjoyed this read and give it 4 ⭐️. Darcy's character was very relatable and made me snort with laughter more than once. And yes, we all would like to find a guy like Archer. The storyline was very well written. It was partially predictable but this is to be expected, when you pick up a store like this.I enjoyed it very , very much and I would definitely recommend this book to everyone who likes a fun and light read. The banter and attraction of both main characters was very well-balanced, and the story had a good level of spice to keep it fun and interesting. I breezed through this book in one cloudy afternoon. Well done, Amanda. I will keep my eyes open for more of your books.
I was hooked instantly like from chapter 4 I could not put this down! Quitel literally the only reason it took me as long to read this Arc as it did was because my kids got sick for like a week because once I picked it back up on chapter 4 1 flew through it so good! it was so much fun not only watching their story unfold through this book but also like slowly watching Archer go from this hard exterior doesn't let anybody in, firefighter, with a troubled p past: and a horrid father o somebody who had slowly but surely begun to change and fall in love and ultimately somebody who wanted more out of life and realize they deserve it as Well. The guy who never saw the gir or the family it created coming. Like I said you went from this hard exterior guy to a sweeter and softer version of it by the end of it Like there's a scene towards the end of the book The Last like 20% or so that I just picture so clearly in my mind him running through the streets trying to get to her my heart exploded especially in the last like 20% or even 10%. 0h my god! And it was also so nice watching Darcy come into her own as well I really did so heavily to Darcy in the sense of feeling like the odd man out or the you know the black sheep type figure in a family because thats how I was growing up and even stll so its so nice like seeing almost bits of myself in her in watching her coming to her own it was really truly beautiful! could read more about these two and I'm really really hoping there's like a bonus up a log or we get more from these two because I need to see their future unfold to see this little babes future unfold you know like 1 need more I feel like l1 just got to where they got to and I need more but like could not recommend this book enough so damn good!

I don't know how to review this book. Overall, it was a cute read. I just wish more had been added to the story.
The way Darcy was written was fine. The development was good, the scenes were good, and the middle-child-syndrome was good. But Archer is where it fell a bit flat. He starts out as the grumpy loner, the one who struggles with relationships and wants to do things his way. But then he's the one looking up pregnancy symptoms and risks, and wanting to do things for Darcy, and being the boyfriend. What we miss is the development of all of that. It's just a switch that happens, but you can't pin down where that switch occurred.
For example, what actually happened over the Thanksgiving weekend? There is no real discussion of what happened between Archer and the Adler family, which would have been pretty instrumental to the storyline. The same with the Christmas scenes. Garrett goes from being guarded around Archer and glaring at him, to them joking and laughing. WHAT HAPPENED.
The various time gaps also didn't make much sense to me, since so much could have been filled in with something. I understand that pregnancy is typically 40 weeks, and trying to fill a book with the full term would be ridiculous and overkill, but when they are supposed to be fake dating, but don't see each other for three weeks, how does that make sense?
The author's writing was fine. The storyline was fine. I think additional execution would have made this book better. It is, however, a cute and easy read if that's what you're going for.
“I wasn’t a complete pessimist, there was a lot of good in the world too - Jack Daniels and romance novels for starters”.
If you love a grumpy/grumpy relationship with a one-night stand that leads to a surprise pregnancy with a bit of forced proximity and one bed thrown in, this is the book for you! I loved this book and the story - the tropes were predictable, but the characters and the journey to the HEA were not.
Archer (MMC) is the epitome of a work-obsessed loaner; he is only concerned about his work - everything revolves around fighting fires. Archer needs something or someone to show him that there is more to life, that he can dream of, and that he deserves to have more than just work. He has some demons that follow him and keep him closed off. Darcy (FMC) is jaded and views life with a pessimistic perspective, but is content with her life and career. One night of fun with the guy she knew from high school leads to a one-night stand and a surprise pregnancy. While they both try to figure out how to move forward, they realize that they can help each other out by faking dating - but with all good fake dating stories, it turns into real romance. The characters find a way through demons and roadblocks to reach their happily ever after.
Thank you to the author for giving me an advanced copy to read - I’m looking forward to more in this world!
🔥One Night Stand 🔥Accidental Pregnancy 🔥Fake Dating 🔥Small Town 🔥Forced Proximity 🔥One Bed 🔥Grumpy x Grumpy 🔥Found Family
I am usually a fan of the ONS/Accidental Pregnancy trope but I just couldn’t get into this one and the character dynamic of it.
The Backdraft follows Darcy and Archer who knew of each other in High School but kind of kept their distance in separate circles. Fast forward 10 years and Darcy, a personal trainer, is faced with an unplanned pregnancy via ONS courtesy of an expired IUD but due to the timing there were two possible fathers and neither wanted the title.
Due to wanting a promotion at work (firefighter), Archer and Darcy agree to fake date as appearing to be a family man would look good in the eyes of his superiors.
So motorcycle riding Archer steps into the fake boyfriend role and in the tale as old as time, they fall in love. Unfortunately in their case it was a car accident that caused them to finally voice their feelings for each other.
I think my biggest issue was how unrealistic the beginning situation was. It’s irresponsibility at its core letting 2 strangers come inside you without knowing them or their sexual history. And not doing the mental math on your IUD…come on woman.
If you’re sensitive to things like these: FMC has siblings in healthcare/rescue fields and often feels insignificant MMC is domestic abuse survivor Mention of car crash(es) Mention of emergency surgery (specifically c-section)

Thank you Amanda Pinkerman for an advanced e-copy of this book!
I LOVE a surprise pregnancy, one night stand, turned fake dating trope 😍 It’s always interesting to see how the characters react and their journey through the new and unexpected!
I loved how Archer went from a silent recluse who had 1 friend and hardly talked or interacted with others, to embracing human connections and finding joy in being with others ❤️ Darcy was able to have more of an internal reflection on herself and the relationship she had with her parents, and I’m glad she was able to work that out as well!
This was defs more of a contemporary romance, not too much humor but there are funny moments, a more serious tone in the writing, given the background of one of the characters. Archer is still healing and dealing with PTSD from his childhood trauma, and we see how this impacts his emotions on page. There is also traumatic birth experience as well, mentioned but not explicitly detailed on page. It does end with a HEA though!
The spice! It is pretty scattered, we got an early scene then one after the halfway mark in the book. There were about 3 other scenes as well in that last half of the book, AND! one is on a motorcycle 👀🏍️ 😂.
Man oh man, I will start by saying, poor Garrett’s truck has seen some things haha. This was such a great book and you can tell that Amanda Pinkerman’s writing just got even better with this one. I giggled, I cried and I felt feelings. I loved Darcy’s witty, sometimes mind in the gutter responses and quick wit and Archer’s grumpy, hard exterior. You think the handcuff scene was hot in the first book? I never saw Garrett say “roll your eyes at me again, and I’ll give them a real reason to roll”., however, I did absolutely melt in to my bed when Archer said it. There is so much great banter, emotion and yes, spice in this book, it is everything you need in one book snugged up in between two covers. I have the same complaint about this book as I did “The Ink Vendetta”, it wasn’t long enough. I got so invested in the characters I just wanted more, and I really hope Amanda gives us just that! I highly, highly recommend you read this book and the first one, “The Ink Vendetta”. They are both well written with plenty of spice and a way of sucking you in deeper and deeper until you’re left panting and wanting more!
I was so excited to dive into The Backdraft by Amanda Pinkerman — especially since it features one of my favorite tropes, surprise pregnancy! I was pleasantly surprised by how much depth and relatability Darcy and Archer’s characters had. Their first chance encounter set the tone for the story and kept me guessing about how everything would unfold — something I really appreciate in a book.
Darcy, a personal trainer, and Archer, a firefighter, grew up in the same town and even went to the same high school (though he was a few years ahead). I loved the dynamic between Darcy and her family, and how Archer’s past and reputation didn’t define who he was in the present. The chemistry between Darcy and Archer was off the charts — they truly brought out the best in each other.
There were a few heavier moments that were tough to read, especially when it came to Archer’s struggles with his self-worth stemming from his childhood, but those layers made the story even more meaningful. Overall, this was a heartfelt, emotional read that I’d definitely recommend.
Full of fan-favorite tropes, this was a fun, easy, and quick read. I liked the snarky and sarcastic comments from most of the characters. This was a fun change from sweet and kind Garrett in The Ink Vendetta, and lived up to the grumpy x grumpy description I was sold on. I also like that there wasn’t a third act miscommunication - while there was drama, it set in nicely with the rest of the plot and came to a conclusion without a lot of unnecessary pain or cringing.
I do wish there had been more depth to Archer and Darcy’s relationship shown on page. As is, I never actually saw / understood Archer and Darcy’s relationship moving past anything more than physical attraction. For example, Archer had a nightmare and immediately explained to Darcy about his childhood trauma. However, this was basically their third conversation together so it felt more force-fitted than like they shared a bond and he was comfortable opening up.
Overall, a 3.5 rounded up.
Thank you to Amanda Pinkerman for providing me with an advanced reader copy in exchange for an honest review.
Arc review First off i would like to thank Amanda for the opportunity to read & review this gifted E-Arc.
Darcy & Archer This book was so good. I absolutely adore Darcy from the jump. Her ability to just be herself and her confidence in who she is was so good to see & watching her grow into become a mom and to see her become exited for it was so much fun to see. Archer had my heart from the jump. After everything he went through to see him come out the other side stronger and more resilient was beautiful, watching him become a dad and they way he would do something for the baby was so cute, Also the way he did little things for Darcy and the way he went to get help for himself to be a better man & dad was so freaking beautiful.
5/5 Recommend this book. This book hits all the marks and it gives you all the banter and heartfelt moments your looking for. I absolutely adore the way Amanda wrote this story and the way the characters come off as aesthetic and raw. While ot does touch on some sensitive topics is was done so with the respect they deserve.
From the moment I started this book, I knew I was in trouble, the good kind of course. I laughed, I teared up, and I fell completely in love with Darcy and Archer’s story from the very first page. Amanda Pinkerman absolutely outdid herself with this one. The humor, the tension, the heat, and the heart are all perfectly balanced throughout the story.
Darcy’s sass and quick wit had me grinning nonstop, while Archer’s grumpy, guarded exterior and soft heart made me melt. The banter between them? Chef’s kiss. The chemistry? Off the charts. And that line, “Roll your eyes at me again, and I’ll give them a real reason to roll.” Yeah… I had to pause for a second after that one because SIR.
I adored how these two constantly pushed each other’s buttons but also lifted each other up. Archer’s backstory truly broke my heart, but watching him slowly believe he deserves happiness and love was so satisfying. Darcy’s strength and humor just made me root for her even more.
It was my first book by Amanda it it won't be my last. I need to go back and read Garrett and Cory's story!
I devoured this book in one afternoon and left NO.CRUMBS.
Archer is a gorgeous but broody firefighter (mmmhmmmmm 🤤🤤🥵) who thinks he’s just too broken to love and be loved. Darcy is an independent, strong, take-no-shit FMC who struggles to find her way in the world in the shadow of her siblings. What happens in the bathroom of the local bar? Well… what happens in bar bathrooms STAYS in bar bathrooms… unless of course, it results in an accidental pregnancy 🫣🫣
The Backdraft was smooth, well-written with no unnecessary lulls in the plot. There was plenty of banter. Top-tier side characters. A healing journey for everyone. Plenty of spice to keep the book engaging and interesting but it doesn’t overwhelm the storyline!
This was my first Amanda Pinkerman book but I can’t wait to read more!
Thank you to the author for the opportunity to review this book in exchange for my honest review!
I enjoyed this cute, easy read. Sweet story with just enough spice. I thought both the FMC and MMC were well developed independently. The witty banter and sexual chemistry between them left me wanting more. I love that Darcy was so relatable...a strong and independent business woman, yet so vulnerable when in the shadows of her siblings. I fell in love with Archer from the start and liked the evolution of his character. My heart broke learning about the struggles of his childhood, although seeing the man he became left my heart feeling full once again.
There was some predicability throughout, but overall, the storyline was well written and held my attention until the very end.
Ultimately, I really enjoyed the book. Others looking for a slow burn with a HEA will too!
Thank you, Amanda Pinkerman, for trusting me with meeting Darcy and Archer before introducing them to the world. It was truly a pleasure getting to know them.
This was such a cute and heartwarming romance read, packed with all the classic tropes that make these stories so addictive. Darcy and Addler’s relationship is a sweet slow burn, full of tension and chemistry that kept me turning the pages. Their banter felt natural, and watching their connection grow was such a treat.
I especially loved the added layer of Addler’s job. It made for a fun and engaging side plot (and honestly, who doesn’t love a man in uniform?). It gave his character more depth and added some interesting dynamics outside the central romance.
The tropes were done so well—fake dating, forced proximity, and a touch of grumpiness. Each of them added to the charm without ever feeling overdone.
Overall, this was a fun and lighthearted read, perfect if you’re after a sweet romance that leaves you smiling.
Huge thanks to Amanda Pinkerman for kindly providing me with this advanced copy!
This book is the ultimate weekend read—perfect for those rare moments when work is off, the kids are calm, and you can curl up with a good story. Grab your favorite drink, a cozy blanket, and dive into this amazing read.
I felt truly seen by this book. It captures the ache of a child who feels like an outsider among their siblings’ successes and the raw fear of judgment that comes with an unexpected pregnancy. Both the FMC and MMC carry deep family-related trauma, but their unique struggles allow them to connect on a profound, emotional level.
I couldn’t put this book down—it held my attention from start to finish. No zoning out, no skimming; every page kept me hooked.
As for the spice? Let’s just say certain steamy scenes had me eyeing my husband’s motorcycle in a whole new way 😏.
I got this as an ARC, even though I don't usually read too much contemporary romance, and when I do it tends to be darker. I also tend to stay away from pregnancy tropes, but I just couldn't resist a firefighter with a motorcycle.
This was a quick read, and definitely not too heavy compared to my usual reads (though definitely check the triggers to judge for yourself). I have a soft spot for grumps with a heart of gold, so Archer won me over really quickly. Both Archer and Darcy tugged on my heartstrings with their personal stories, and I'm not ashamed to admit that I definitely teared up at times. But overall, it's a very sweet story and will leave your heart full.
I haven't read the first book, and wasn't lost at all, so this truly is a standalone. I will probably go back and read the first one when I get a chance.
A much appreciated down-to-earth, realistic romance featuring an accidental pregnancy before fake dating and two characters so worthy of love. Darcy feels like the black sheep of her family, especially finding out she is pregnant after a one night stand. Archer, a firefighter running for a promotion at the station, needs to prove he has a life outside of work. They reach a mutual agreement to help each other out, as well as embrace impending parenthood. The way these two grumpy personalities opened their hearts to love and each other was genuine…it took time and work (along with some humor, spice and seriously emotional moments)—to read about them getting to a happily ever after warmed my heart. The story was raw, honest and compelling, I enjoyed this one! 4.25 stars Thanks to the author for the eARC!
Archer and Darcy ❤️🔥 from a spicy hookup, to a surprise pregnancy, to each individual dealing with childhood trauma these characters did it all! I loved the sass and snark of the MCs, their banter had me giggling. The spice was there, but it didn’t consume the whole story line which I liked. I loved how the MCs helped each other grow and how they created their own little family. The best friends of the MCs were such a good bunch. Both gave tough love and reality checks when needed. I also loved seeing the whole Alder family again after meeting them in book one. The writing was done beautifully. The book was low angst even though there were some tense moments and I flew through it. LOVED ❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥

This is Amanda’s sophomore book but you wouldn’t even know it. Honestly, as one of her beta readers you can tell that she has grown and matured as an author. Her ideas and plot lines are solid, her characters are consistent, and the smut gets better and better!!
I’m normally not a huge fan of pregnancy tropes but Amanda nailed this. It’s a perfect blend of realism and romance to create these characters that you simultaneously want to shake and kiss. They’ve gone through real traumas but how she writes it puts it into perspective without overdoing it.
This is such a fun read and wholesome- the smut isn’t wholesome but you get the point.
Archer is a firefighter with a traumatic past who is after a promotion at work. Darcy is a fitness instructor who likes to go out and have fun. Until one day she discovers she’s pregnant and there are two possible baby daddies.
When she gets a paternity test done, will the father step up ? Also, he wants a favour from Darcy…

I loved this book. It pulled me in from the start. I loved the two main characters , and the banter between them was wonderful . It was cute, and squishy , but my word the spice was SPOT ON!! Archer is an animal and I loved him with every piece of my body.
Darcy was strong, brave and confident and we could all learn a lot from her !
I could not put this book down until I finished it!!
accidental pregnancy ✔️ found family ✔️ friends to lovers ✔️
Darcy and Archer are sooooo cute. I love that she helped him see the good in himself while also trying to see the good in herself. The baby shopping scene? Give me more of that. I really thought we were gonna have some issues with the car wreck BUT all is well and everyone was healthy so no need to email the author a strongly worded essay on why they should not play with me. overall, this was a quick read and a good way to get me out of a slump. Firefighter romances aren’t typically my thing, but I may just have to indulge that a little more now.

I’m a little obsessed with first responder stories so when I saw the opportunity to signup for this arc I knew I had to check it out! Amanda Pinkerman is a new author to me but I’m so glad I gave her a chance. This story had me hooked from the sizzling first interaction between Darcy and Archer.
Archer had me wanting to give him hugs while he cried on my shoulder and ask him to take me for a ride on his motorcycle!!! This story was the perfect blend between sweet and spicy! Archer and Darcy both struggle with seeing their self worth and this was such a great journey to healing and to each other.
I received this book as an ARC in exchange for my review. Archer was one of my favorite MMCs I’ve read this year. He’s broody. He’s a fireman. He’s a good person even if no one actually knows it. I really appreciated that this story didn’t beat the bush around for 100 years before getting to the premise. Accidental pregnancy is not usually a trope that I like but it didn’t feel forced in this one. And Darcy being a FMC that owns her sexuality was sooooooooooooo refreshing over the virgin tropes that have become so popular. She has opinions and she’s strong and she will not be slut-shamed. Loved that.

This was such a sweet story of 2 frustratingly stubborn people that have a one night stand and a surprise pregnancy. Darcy a successful personal trainer and Archer the grumpy firefighter. They both have issues stemming from childhood and only like to have the occasional casual hook up. Well after finding out She’s pregnant she informs a not so enthusiastic Archer. Well archer is up for a promotion at work but his fire chief wants him to find something he enjoys outside of work so fake dating his baby Mama it’s is. This book was so fun to read and see both of their walls break down and end up in love. Thoroughly enjoyed this one 🖤💕🖤
This was my FIRST ever ARC so thank you to the author for taking a chance on lil ol’ me in exchange for an honest review! 😆
I stumbled upon the Ink Vendetta and loved the quick read so I was very excited to get this second book!
I loved the one night stand bathroom trope, what an origin story! The exploration of how Darcy fit into her family was also very relatable. There sets so many great one liners and moments that made me giggle.
I wish there was a little more depth to Archer and Darcy’s emotional relationship, but overall it was very well rounded and a super fun read!
