Gods and Graves

Rate this book
What do you do when you have no identity, no name, no past? You create one.

For as long as I can remember, I’ve been trapped in a minuscule room. All I know is the monotonous routine of reaping souls and then returning to my prison. And pain. Lots of pain.

Everything changes when I’m compelled to reap the souls of an elite supernatural warrior team.

Krystian, the flirty elf hiding dark secrets.

Zaid, the sweet wraith who deteriorates all of my defenses, one carefully selected word at a time.

Rafael, the psychotic blood fae who wishes to possess and claim me.

And Everett, the ornery leader of the group, hiding away a lethal monster.

Imagine my surprise when they’re the first beings in centuries who can actually see me. Hear me. Feel me. Somehow, I’m a real girl again, in a real body, with real emotions.

And what happened to me? Apparently, that’s not normal.

Who locked me away for all these years and why? If I’m not a reaper, then…what am I?

One thing’s for certain—the gods are playing dangerous games with our lives, and if we’re not smart about our next step, we’ll end up in the grave.

Gods and Graves is a standalone paranormal romance from USA Today and Amazon top 50 author Katie May. Within these pages, expect to see Greek mythology, possessive (and psychotic) love interests, a crazy FMC alive for the first time in centuries, and a plot that will keep you hooked until the very last page.

I think it’s probably the slump I’m in, but I was just getting bored towards the end. Not enough relationship development, too much quest for answers that I didn’t really care about.
*sigh*
That’s definitely the slump talking.😂
It wasn’t a bad book. I actually did like it. I just didn’t love it and my mood is weighing pretty heavily on my book standards right now.

This was goodish, but it would have been better as a duet. It's probably my fault, but I didn't realize this was a standalone until I was about halfway through this book. I was like, why is this moving SO fast? All of the characters are saying ily by like halfway through the book. There was one character who "hated" her for about 1 day. But, I do understand it's a standalone so they couldn't really draw out the slow-burn for a reverse harem in one book.

The FMC is definitely intended to be a bit like Paca in the Dark Side Series by Kristy Cunning. At the start of the book, it's actually almost TOO similar to that series. She's pretty funny, and honestly, this is the type of psycho hilarious FMC that I like. However, she stopped being funny about 40% into the book, which was a bit of a bummer.

The ending tied everything together nicely. It's a good twist of events and the plot is definitely good. I was just a bit underwhelmed by the romance because it was so rushed. I liked it, but it moves too quick and would have been better as a duet.

3.25 ⭐️/2.5 🌶️—This reminded me a lot of Kristi Cunning’s The Dark Side series. It was an enjoyable read, but very short and not a part of a series. I felt like it rushed what could have been a more interesting storyline across multiple books. Trigger warning.

Cute quick read! Was not super engaged with the plot that reality was lost & only living thru this book, but the characters were holding their own! Love the dialogue witty/cheesy/cute& steamy!!!!! No grammatical errors which is always a plus! The story flowed for most part! Felt more like was told what to feel and what is happening not showing us how it is unfolding! So the structure was a bit mechanical at times, but still liked it overall & the FMC did have backbone standing up for herself & her men along with some great one liners! Definitely can sense some connection loved that! It was good not great! Obviously loved the supernatural romance trope reverse haram the best!

🎶 “If you could take my pulse right now. It would feel just like a sledgehammer” 🎶

For as long as she can remember, she’s existed in nothing but shadow and pain. Trapped in a tiny room, her only purpose is to reap souls before returning to her prison. No freedom. No future. No answers. Until everything changes. Compelled to reap the souls of an elite supernatural warrior team, Thea (h) finds herself standing before four men unlike any she’s ever known.

— ⋆。゚☁︎。⋆。 ゚☾ ゚。⋆• THOUGHTS⋆。゚☁︎。⋆。 ゚⋆—

“We found each other in my first life, then again in my next. And I have no doubt we’ll be drawn to each other in death too.”

Thea is my BABY😭💓💌❤️. I love her so much. She is adorable, precious, wholesome, and my new obsession. She deserves all the love in the world from her men 🤍❤️💗💌💖, especially considering she has been alone for years as a reaper. APHRODITE, when I catch you. Thea deserved so much more time with her guys, and it breaks my heart that she had to remember something so traumatic in the process. ARES, ROT IN TARTARUS. It is also disappointing that the guys will never remember or hold onto those memories. But it is okay, because they will create new ones. And those new memories will be just as powerful.

[Krystian]

“Thea,” I whisper, keeping my voice soft to not disturb Zaid. “Thea, love.”

“Krys?” She blinks again, rubs at her face, and then frowns. “Krystian?”

My light and dark elf 💖❤️🤍💌. I love how he embraced both sides of himself, even though it took a little nudge from Thea to realize that he and Krys were one and the same. He would never harm her, and he was never truly a bad person. All of his tendencies were still him, he had just been so conflicted that he split into two separate entities. But in reality, they were one and the same. He was flirty, charming, and openly embraced the chance to get to know her. Out of everyone, he was the first one who was completely all in 🤍❤️💗💌.

[Zaid]

“Say something,” Zaid pleads. “Is it weird? Fuck, it’s weird, isn’t it? I know I shouldn't have—”

“You waited for me.

MY SOFTIE. 💖❤️🤍💌 He blushes at everything and is soft and gentle with her. He loves to read, he is smart, and he was always a calming and reassuring presence. He guided them, kept them on track with their mission to protect her, and always had his priorities straight. He waited for her 💌💖❤️💓🤍. He was never with anyone else because, deep down, he felt like he already belonged to someone. And that someone was her.

[Rafe]

“That was the worst moment of my life, Thea,” Rafe whispers.

“I can’t even think about it without…”

MY BABY ❤️💓💌🤍. The unhinged king who got her a bouquet made of the fingers of all the men who had harmed her. He is also a complete sucker for safewords, bondage, and degradation. I love this man. He has a way with words… YEAH ❤️💌💗. He is the one no one thought would be capable of feeling, yet he feels the most—and he feels it hard. He was obsessed with her and could not resist the pull, even if he did not quite understand what he was feeling.

[Everett]

“You hated me.”

“I told you I didn’t. I never have.”

TEDDY BEAR. 🤍❤️💗💌💖 He is the biggest softie at his core and a total sweetheart. He pushed her away and acted like a complete grump because he did not want her to come between him and the group, but really he just hated how much she affected him. In the end, he was willing to confront his father for her and protect her, whatever the cost.

Her parents being Hades and Persephone brought me such a sense of peace, because now she will never have to suffer again with them at her side. I have no doubt her parents will be ruthless if anyone ever tries to take Thea away from them again. Now Thea can finally be happy and at peace as a reaper with her guys. I loved this book 🤍💖. It was the perfect balance of wholesome moments and strong plot, and it was always clear they were going to find their way back to each other.

Idc what anyone else says. I loved this book. Yeah it’s instalust. Whatever. The way the story rolls out it just works.
And sometimes I am just in the mood for a no drama (no OW no OM NO BULLYING) relationship book. 😤

There. I said it. 🤣 There is a teeny bit of a grumpy asshole but even he quickly shows he isn’t immune to the fmc.

This is a fast read. Standalone. HEA. Cleansed my eyes from some books that burned them recently. 😆

Probably could have been a bit more spicy but in all honestly I enjoyed the story enough that I didn’t miss it.

I hope she revisits these characters. I honestly fell in love with them all!

Cute

This was a fast paced book and I liked it. Usually I read series because reverse harem stories seem to need more than one book to develop the plot and characters well. But I felt like the author did a really good job on all of that and putting all in one book. Thea was funny. The guys all had their personalities and they meshed well with Thea. The plot moved well. There were nice surprises. Overall I give this book an A+! Good job Ms. May!

This got me in all the feels. I absolutely devoured this book and loved every word. It’s unique, passionate, romantic, suspenseful and so well written. For anyone that loves stories about ancient gods that are RH with plenty of of spice and some unhinged men, with a stellar FMC this is it!

4 ⭐️ (just)

I’m giving this one 4 stars but it definitely deserves a reread. I read it while in a lot of back pain and dealing with a family emergency in the hospital, so I was reading more for distraction than for full immersion. Even so … I loved the premise. Which is about an FMC who is trapped for centuries, suddenly freed and tangled up with a psychotic, possessive group of four supernatural men. Their dynamic was awesome and chaotic in the best way. The whole thing was dark, twisted and addictive. I do wish it had been a bit longer and more fleshed out but that might be down to my headspace at the time. I’ll definitely pick it up again when I can really savour it.

Wow! Amazing!

Another amazing read from Katie May. Thea immediately pulls you into her story with her innocence and quirky personality. I also love the widely different personalities between the guys. The story will take you on an adventure to find out who's responsible for everything that's happening. I loved the storyline and justice at the end. Would definitely recommend grabbing a copy and plan a few hours to just dive in uninterrupted.

I really enjoyed this book.

Thea was an incredibly hilarious character with her inner commentary & even her outward remarks.

Having been in a bit of a painful loop for quite a long, long time, she desperately wishes she could escape.

And one fateful night leads her right into the path of four men who unknowingly helps her break free.

What follows was Thea in all of her chaos & adorableness experiencing the world she’d been hidden from.

The four men, warriors, are determined to help her find out who she is & what happened to her. Which only leads to meeting Gods & Goddesses whilst fighting to survive.

I really enjoyed the characters in this book. Obviously Thea was my fave, like I said her commentary was too hilarious.

But those men were ::chef’s kiss:: perfection.
Each uniquely different but just right for her.

That twist at the end was definitely not expected but man was it crazy.

This was such a good book & I highly recommend it.

Amazing job!

As usual Katie May humor is clearly seen throughout the book. The FMC is hilarious and her sassy witty comments had me roaring and crying with laughter. It definitely kept me entertained.

Surprising twist and turn has you wanting to keep turning the pages. I can’t believe Katie wrote this in 6 days. Thoroughly funny, entertaining and attention grabbing. Keep you riveted. Katie definitely has an all consuming way with words. Her descriptions are fantastic and sends you into a vivid world of imagination.

Where does she come up with such ideas and stories. Love, love her style of writing.

So good. Hilarious, quirky and hits all the right spots. Enjoyable read and I inhaled it in a day. Enjoy this book very much couldn’t stop reading

You will love it. Katie has outdone herself. I love Thea sense of humor too and all the MMC but especially Zaid and Rafe. 💜💜💜💜

Make sure you all run and get it!! 😁

Love Thea and her men!

I was surprised by some of it. Laughed at a lot of it. And genuinely enjoyed all of it.

This is a book that has a lot of spice while still being heavily plot driven. It was a new take on the Greek Pantheon. I definitely recommend reading and enjoying! (Rafe might be my new book BF.) ;)

loved!

This was such a great standalone! I loved the concept of the gods/godesses and trying to figure out who was behind it all. I loved our FMC, Thea she was so funny and great. Katie has an amazing way of writing characters that are not used to things and making it funny instead of making them seem naive. The MMCs are also great, I loved all the personalities. Grumpy, unhinged, sweet, smart, etc. I hope we get to see more from this world.

gods and graves

This book took me a little longer to read than most. I did find some parts to drag a little but overall the story is very good. Though she never did introduce her men to her cacti, after reducing her from the room… was it left behind? No clue. In the end it was worth the time to see Thea and her men get the HEA they deserve.

Absolutely Superb!

Katie May has once again created a wonderful story, intense characters, and a fantastic world for them. It's a new spin on Greek gods manipulating things behind the scenes.
Thea is a slightly insane FMC due to solitary confinement for over 400 years. The only time she could leave was when she was forced to reap souls, and then she was dragged back to her prison. Until something unexpected happened.
Do be aware that there is a flashback to some intense trauma.
Overall, I'm probably going to read this book again soon.

beyond impressed

Katie wrote this book in 6 days!!!! 6 days! And I loved everything about it. I laughed out loud! I teared up!!! I raged a bit! I felt all the feels. These characters were each so unique in their own way and the FMC is all the things I love about an FMC! The men were drool worthy and OTT in the best way! Hoping we see more of the characters esp a certain goddess who deserves good things!!!

Interesting story but too similar to Kristy Cunnings Dark Side series. Since this was a standalone it was insta love and insta lust. Had a good amount of action and kept me entertained. Everything was a little too convenient though.

The FMC, Thea, reminds me of Paca from Kristy Cunning The Dark Side series. And not in a rip off way, they are similar and I bet would become best friends after what they went through.

Thea days are filled with reaping souls, she has a cactus 🌵 and thats it for a friend. She knows shes a reaper and knows how to reap and what to do to stop the effects from reaping.
The guys, Christian (Chris), Ralph, Zed and Evert are all different in character and are part of a team that keeps sups in line under the management of Aries.

The world, its politics and events are well built for a standalone. I fell into the characters and their lives easily, just like Cunnings book it was quirky in the right way. Nice to find another writer with a style that hits those points Kristy Cunnings did... I keep mentioning her because she sadly died, so if you do read Gods and Graves, give The Dark Side series a read too because it's got the similar humour, twists, intense connection and good development as well as spice.

The attraction is pretty instant, even with one of them being a bit arsehole like. But it's not really insta-love when things are revealed. The smex is hot and in a standalone we get an explicit taste of each guy and one group team building 😉

Even with all of this, I can't fault the book, for a standalone it flows at the spped it needs and leaves us wishing for more while suspecting it was best left as one book. The book was light enough for my burnout and extended book hangover mind to process.

Audio review, to keep the flow of a standalone I wish it was duet narrative or just one narrator. while each narrator didn't do terrible jobs doing each other's character voices. I'm getting use to how duet narrative flow better without pulling the mind out to figure out who they are doing. That split sec of extra cognitive work hurt my burnout mind.

A warning, there is detailed flash back of SA, was short but intense enough to get the pain and horror of the event across.

Tropes
✅️Greek Mythology
✅️Reaper FMC
✅️Why Choose (MFMMM)
✅️Found Family
✅️Paranormal Romance
✅️Lost Memories

Triggers
☑️Death
☑️Gore
☑️Sexual Assault
☑️Imprisonment

I don't usually like Greek Mythology themed stories, but this was kind of fun. The fact the FMC is a Reaper, lost her memories, and gains a harem of super attractive men pretty much sold me.

Quite the man buffet with this group.
Krystian is the flirty elf with a secret dark side.
Zaid is the sweet golden retriever wraith.
Rafael is the psychotic and overly possessive blood Fae.
Then there is Everett, the emotionally closed of leader who shifts into a deadly beast.

Definitely some insta love between most of the group when they first meet. But it all makes sense once the ending is revealed. Not gonna lie, I was definitely a little icked out with chapter 42. Didn't really see that coming.

2.5 rounded up.

The beginning was good and funny, then it became a bit boring (even the spicy part, most of which were useless and stopped the plot) and finally the resolution happened quickly without much hurdles.

Such a Fun Read

This was such a great standalone story! I really enjoyed the humour and interesting characters. The plot was unique and I’m always a sucker for a different take on the Gods.
The trigger warnings let’s you know there will be some heavy moments up ahead, but it still caught me off guard and I really felt for Thea and the trauma she endured.
Speaking of Thea, she is a wonderful FMC managing to be both naive and tough at the same time. She is written with depth and great dialogue. I enjoyed her men and their obsession with her, I always love a slightly unhinged character.
I truly enjoyed this incredible palette cleanser!

Loved this Book! 😍😍

This was an amazing standalone book! ❤ I love that Katie kept to some of the stories about the gods in her book but I liked the twist on some of the other gods goddesses in it. Thea and her men are a great team and explosive as romantic partners. 💕 If you are looking for a fun and great story I highly recommend this one! 😍

I reallllly wanted to like this one. Ghost girls that have never been corporeal are some of my favorite books. The author's note at the beginning said this book was written in 6 days, and I just have to say, I can very easily tell that is true. Many things are repeated, sometimes multiple times in a few consecutive paragraphs.

It's a standalone, so by 55% you'd expect some plot progession and some character development. Almost none of that has happened. We just got to a *little* "plot progression* but it happens to be a conclusion they almost immediately jumped to after meeting her at the beginning of the book. So everything is very *in your face* and straightforward.

As far as character depth and development, it seems the personalities of the MMCs did a complete 180 upon meeting the FMC (again at the beginning of the book), so there was no development into the drastic changes, it just *snap, crackle, and pop* happened.

It did preface saying a trope was instalust, but there's a difference between instalust and instalove, and I'm afraid we have 5 cases of instalove (including our FMC). There's no tension. No banter. No relationship development (and there was *technically* 5 relationship opportunities to have some kind of development). It's just *wham bam thank you slut* (no ma'am here). Which I don't necessarily mind buuuuuuuut the lack of tension makes the smut quite boring and repetitive. Very quick scenes too.

As far as the characters themselves go, some of our MMC's actually have some cool aspects I haven't read that commonly in this genre. They just lacked the depth to really rope me in. Other's have many of the "shadow daddy" typical traits. The FMC, I've 1000000% read before (I like ghost girls like I said) and unfortunately she's still annoying. "omg I haven't touched this thing before" (she ACTUALLY says omg), "MOANS when eating food" (happens at least 15 times in the first half of the book, and yes it gives the men boners everytime, and yes they have to say how sexy it is every. time.) "I want to try popcorn!" (WHY IS IT ALWAYS POPCORN OR CHOCOLATE???????? like that's weird that it's such a reoccurring theme in these specific incorporeal books).

The potential of the book is insane. It just needs an extreme case of *slowing down* and *flushing out*. Could've been an amazing duology.

In conclusion, if you want a good version of this book, try Liminal by Marie Mistry.

Thank you for coming to my tedtalk.

Thea is hilarious with no filter and i was honestly surprised that all 4 guys didn’t blend together in my brain since this was such a quick story and they each had their own personalities. the twists and reveals were a little bit predictable but the overall story was enjoyable.

Very fun!

**SPOILERS**

Thea is a reaper, or at least she thinks she’s a reaper. Her chest gets tight, and with her trusty magical dagger she’s sent to a soon to be death scene to reap the soul(s) of whoever she was sent there to reap. When she has reaped the soul she’s sent back to her “prison,” a small room with a huge bed, closet stuffed with clothes, TV and books. She has no company, except for a potted cactus that she talks to, and this cliche repeats itself for hundreds of years. One day she gets sent to a forest where she comes across a hellhound. Suddenly a dark Fae, a shifter, a wraith and a blood fae appear on the scene to kill the murderous hellhound. Thea knows she’s there to reap one of these hot guys souls but when she sees the hellhound almost upon Zaid, she freaks and kills the hellhound. The guys are an elite team of supernatural warriors designed, trained and sent out by the God Ares. Each God has an elite team, but only one team can exist at a time. When the last team died it was Ares turn to let his team loose.

The guys are shocked by Thea’s sudden appearance because Thea has always been incorporeal, no one can really see her, and she can experience the “real world.” But for some odd reason suddenly Thea is corporeal and the guys can see and feel her. Thea is delighted! She’s able to touch, taste, smell things for the first time in hundred of years…plus the guys are smoking hot (lol) and she’s always wanted to try her hand at actual sex. She has no memories of her life before the prison so she’s so happy to experience being REAL!

The guys bring her to their motel, and question her a bit. When they hear her story they’re determined to help her and keep her with them. They decide to visit Aphrodite, Ares ex who kinda went off the deep end when she learned that Ares was obsessed with some other woman. They don’t learn much from their visit, so they turn to Athena, the Goddess of wisdom next. They have to go to the Labyrinth to find her. When they meet her they learn a little, like Thea’s dagger which is now a tattoo on her skin is housing souls that she reaped and the power is being transferred to a God or Goddess…whoever trapped Thea in her prison. They visit Hades next and he’s shocked by Thea’s appearance…Thea was created by Hades and apparently originally part of the guts team until she disappeared 400 years ago. Thea is overwhelmed. When the guts and Thea go back to Area compound Ares is shocked…Thea is Winnifred, the fifth member of the team he put together AND the girl he became scarily obsessed with!! He watched her since she was young and eventually he assaulted/raped her and beat her near death. It turns out Aphrodite who is a real beyotch came across Thea’s broken body and in her bitter, jealous rage used Athena’s runes to trap Thea in her prison and transfer power to her! Thea is enraged and manages to kill Aphrodite. The guys come to her rescue, but they’re too late. When she kills Aphrodite she dies. She finds herself back in Hades throne room. He tells her he will grant her immortality and allow her to remain with her guys if she becomes his personal reaper. Thea takes the deal and returns to her men. They live HEA, lol.

**THOUGHTS/OPINIONS**

This was a fun, easy read with plenty of action and steam. The “mysteries” in the plot weren’t that hard to figure out, and the book was face paced, but that’s all overcome by the simply delightful character that is Thea!! Thea is a fantastic FMC and OMG she just hysterical!!! Her talking to her potted cactus, and screaming at bad Spanish telenovas are hilarious! And then when she’s corporeal, her interactions with the guys and the world in general are sooooo funny and adorable!!! She’s feisty, innocent but the most engaging thing about her is her sense of humor!! The MMC’s are sexy as heck! Yes they aren’t developed as fully as I’d like, but as I said, the book is an easy and quick read, so they were developed as much as the book could handle. They steam is off the charts, and the plotline is action packed, fun and fairly “light.” This book is a joy to read, and a winner if you like quirky, hilarious FMC’s, hot guys, and just a dab of Greek mythology!!!
