A Soul's Curse: An MM Urban Fantasy

Rate this book
All I had to do was deliver a pepperoni pizza. Instead, I unleashed a cursed soul onto the streets of Salem and landed at the top of the Syndicate’s most wanted list.

My magic, perfectly balanced between life and death, is exactly what these magical elites need to wipe out “impure” magic for good. Their demand? Hunt down the elusive phantom Caspian Vale and steal his power or watch them rip the magic from my best friend and shatter her soul—and then they’ll break me next.

That's why when Ren, a broken demon with a vendetta, a sarcastic streak, and an octopus tattoo because dragons are so cliché, throws me a lifeline, I cling to it like it’s all I’ve got... because it is. It turns out this burnt marshmallow might be dark and bitter on the outside, but he’s warm and sweet within. It’s a dangerous combination because in Salem, trusting the wrong person doesn’t just cost you your life. It costs you your soul.

Time is running out. And death? Death is calling my name.

A Soul's Curse by Christine Schulz offers an enjoyable mix of magic, intrigue, and romance. The plot kicks off with a pizza delivery that spirals into a wild adventure in Salem, where we get to know a cast of unique characters. The main character's struggle with their powers and the threat to their friend adds real stakes, keeping you invested in what happens next.
Ren, the demon with his own issues, has a sarcastic side, but his unexpected softness make him relatable, and seeing his bond with the protagonist grow through challenges is really satisfying. The writing flows well, and Schulz createsa vivid world filled with quirky magical elements. Their tension and chemistry make you root for these two to find stability amidst chaos. A Soul's Curse was a fun and engaging read that balances both the magical and the personal effortlessly. Good read!

I’m always excited to start a new series, especially when I love the author that is penning it. I started this one and knew immediately it was going to be a winner. We meet Theo, our main character, who has death magic but uses it to heal. Of course, he runs afoul of an evil organization, and events spiral from there. I loved all the characters in this book including Theo, and I enjoyed every darn minute of this book. For those who enjoy this author or a good urban fantasy, you’ll definitely enjoy this one. Highly recommend. I was provided a complimentary copy which I voluntarily reviewed.

I really like urban fantasy but I just do not read it often enough. From the moment I was introduced to Theo I really liked him. Having death magic that if folk knew about they would not trust him but even so he went out of his way to help anyone who needed it.
From the moment Theo delivered the pizza, being on the radar of a secret society, knowing that his life and the people he loved were in danger. Being there for his mom and sister and having feelings for Ren, a half demon, this was a fast paced book.
Finishing on a slight cliffhanger I cannot wait for book 2

Awesome story!

Theo's magic is so interesting and cool! I love that he has a little found family in his friends, Ellie, Ivy, Stella and Lyric. And his very interesting ghost friends are awesome. They're funny.
This book has a lot of typos and two places where one paragraph is repeated 3 times. It's so intriguing though that I didn't let that stop me from devouring it.
I can't wait for the next book to come out!

I really enjoyed this book. It wasn’t a show stopping, gasp and hold my breath book but it kept moving. The characters grew on you and you became invested in the good guy trying to win his battle.

I had a really good time reading A Soul’s Curse and happily give it 4.5 stars. I regularly read MM books, so this was right up my alley! Theo is an easy character to root for as he is constantly thrown into deeper and darker magical trouble, and I loved how his unique connection to life and death shaped the choices he had to make. Ren completely stole my heart with his mix of sarcasm, trauma, and quiet softness, and the chemistry between him and Theo was so good. I personally would have loved a little bit more on-page spice, but the tension, emotional connection, and slow-burn feel still made for a sweet romance. I love that the book took place in a magical Salem, and the cameos from famous ghosts were really entertaining! I’m genuinely excited to continue the series! I need to know what happens next!
