Hollywood icon Laura Dern breathes new life into Louisa May Alcott’s classic coming-of-age tale that follows the lives of four sisters against a backdrop of the American Civil War. This autobiographical novel takes place in and around the girls’ New England home.
This great American novel demonstrates Alcott's extraordinary talent at portraying the joys and struggles of family life in an unforgettable way. Generations of people - young and old, male and female - have fallen in love with the March sisters. This classic of young adult fiction transcends genre, gender, and class with its examination of personal quests, societal restrictions, family ties, and the end of innocence.
This new audio original dramatisation of Little Women stars a full cast led by two-time Academy Award-nominee, four-time Golden Globe-winner, and Emmy winner Laura Dern (Little Women, Big Little Lies, Jurassic Park), along with veteran narrators Suzanne Toren, Lauren Fortgang, Allison Hiroto, Emily Bauer, and Carly Robins.
Amy March is my comfort character. I balanced this version with my physical copy for the sections I wanted to re-read and soak in and the writing was so good it felt like my brain was being power-washed.
This is probably closer to a 4.5, but I will round up. It was a sweet and cozy read. There are so many relatable story lines: sister quarrels and grudges (Amy and Jo in the beginning) struggles with being a new mom, trying to fit in, falling for someone who doesn’t feel the same. It was cute and cozy, sad and heart warming. I deduct 1/2 star simply because some of the messages and gender roles are dated.
Until recently, I had vague memories of the 94 movie and that was pretty much all I knew of Little Women. Then I watched the Greta Gerwig version and loved it!
So, I decided to read the book.
it's really long though  So, someone suggested the audio book and I'm so glad I did it! I loved listening to the characters and the emotion they brought to it. Though, I think I preferred
The only reason for not giving this 5 stars is that I know Alcott changed the ending for publishing reasons, and I would have loved to seen it finished they way she intended instead.
Little Women is such a comforting, timeless story. I loved the characters, the sisterhood, and the way love and friendship are at the center of everything. The life lessons about family, growth, and becoming yourself really stand out.
The full-cast narration was incredible and made the story feel warm and immersive. It’s truly one of the best audiobooks I’ve listened to.
I love that a friend rereads this every year during the holidays, and I completely agree—it’s the perfect seasonal read. It also made me excited to watch some of the film adaptations with my daughter over holiday break and experience the story together.
A beautiful classic that’s always worth coming back to. ❤️
