The Space Between

Rate this book
Some stories don’t begin with a spark. They begin in the wreckage.

Blakelyn Walker came to Juniper Falls with nothing but a new job and the hope that silence could save her.

Gruene Cavanaugh has spent six years surviving the same river that took everything from him—his wife, his daughter, and the man he used to be.

They’re neighbors. Strangers.
Two broken hearts pressed too close together on the edge of the same water.

She isn’t looking for love.
He doesn’t believe he deserves it.
But something lives in the space between grief and want … between what’s safe … and what still hurts .

And sometimes, the most unexpected love stories are the ones written from the scars .

The Space Between is an angsty, love after loss adult romance. Those with sensitivities to loss of life, domestic abuse (mental/physical/intimate), mental anguish, questioning self-worth, and self-sabotage should proceed with caution.

The Space Between is a deeply emotional romance tale by Skye Turner.
In this poignant love story, Skye Turner delves into the heart-wrenching journey of two broken souls as they learn to heal their pain.
Gruene, a man burdened by the weight of his past, grapples with profound survivor's guilt after losing everything he once cherished. He exists as a mere shadow of his former self, haunted by memories that refuse to fade.
On the other hand, Blakelyn is a woman on a quest for solace, attempting to mend the fractured pieces of her life after enduring a harrowing experience of abuse. She has built walls around herself, fighting to reclaim her identity and find the strength to move forward.
Their paths unexpectedly intertwine, sparking an intense connection filled with raw emotion. As they navigate through a landscape of grief, heartache, and the remnants of their damaged spirits, they must confront their individual struggles while questioning whether the bond they share can truly heal their wounds.
Amidst the tension, the story features some sizzling romance that ignites the pages, with steamy love scenes that explore the depths of their desires. Yet, intertwined with passion are secrets that could threaten to unravel the fragile trust they are trying to build. Will they open up their true selves, or will their pasts continue to loom over their burgeoning relationship?

The Space Between; Hope Runs Deep by Skye Turner is my first novel by this author, and so I had no idea what to expect! Let me start by saying I absolutely loved it! For sure, a 5 star read! This story is not for all audiences as there is a great deal of sex and some domestic violence mixed in with a good dallop of profanity. This story is about Blakelyn, whom is running away from a life that almost killed her, looking to move on in a new job, in a new town, away from the thing that haunts her in her waking and sleeping hours. And Gruene, who is healing from a different trauma that didnt take his life, although it maybe should have, but it did take the lives of his wife and daughter. They both are resistant. Both not believing they are deserving of anyone's love. Both broken. Both scared. And so they start off rocky with a push and pull relationship that seems centered around sex. But somehow, through it all, they overcome the walls they've built around them selves and forge a happy ending with each other! Highly recommend this story!

An engaging and emotional romance about finding love after loss, which had me hooked throughout. Blakelyn arrives in Juniper Falls to start a new job and a new life having left an abusive relationship. Here she meets Gruene who is still grieving the loss of his wife and daughter six years ago. He also suffers survivors guilt as he survived the river that took his family. The pair become neighbours and start as strangers, but their relationship slowly grows and develops over time. However, Blakelyn isn’t looking for love and Gruene doesn’t believe he deserves it. I was captivated by this unexpected love story which was both heartwarming and at times heartbreaking. The descriptive narrative brought both the setting and characters vividly to life making me feel fully immersed in the story. I was taken on an emotional rollercoaster whilst reading this, as I felt engaged with both Blakelyn and Gruene and invested in their relationship. The storyline does have a few potential triggers, however these difficult topics are dealt with sensitively.

You know that feeling of being drained emotionally when you finished a book ?! This one of those that leave you with a red nose , swollen and puffy eyes a fragile heart yet a satisfied heart 🥰

This is about 2 people , Blakelyn and Gruene , that have had more than their fair share of pain and heartache , they’ve survived and they’ve managed to live again when they least thought possible

Blakelyn finally finds the courage to leave her abusive relationship and moves to Juniper Falls , a fresh start of sorts . Her neighbor not only lost who he was as a man but he lost his daughter and wife and survivor guilt is a monster 👹 ( I’m already tearing up again 💔🥲)

People will wonder why Blakelyn never left earlier but let me tell you it’s not easy these abusive people are master manipulators and you eventually believe you deserve the abuse you believe you’re as bad and weak as they make you out to be , the alienate you from friends and family , don’t judge what you don’t know . Blakelyn found her courage , she was brave , she was scared , she was bold she survived ….

Blakelyn and Gruene become each others healing balm and sharing their story almost feels like betrayal because it’s their story to tell ( you need to read it ) you know what I mean 🤷‍♀️

All I can say I be prepared to have you heart smashed , keep an ample supply of Kleenex and brace yourself …..

The Space Between: An Angsty, Love After Loss Spicy Adult Romance by Skye Turner
5 Star Review
If I could give this more than 5 stars it would be an 8! Gruene Cavanaugh is haunted by the ghosts of his wife and daughter who have past away and cannot get through his grief. Blakelyn Walker is haunted and pursued by the ex who abused her physically and mentally. These two strangers find each other and help each other in a way that is completely unique and forms a bond stronger than one would think possible. This is a wonderful story in and of itself, but the icing on the cake is the spice. This is a spicy little number, so faster your seatbelts!
Skye Turner has done a marvelous job at creating these two people who are at the end of their hope. The are powerful, lost, and strong beyond belief. The descriptors in this book are amazing. I felt like I was there, on the river with them.
This book is beautifully organized and so easy to read. I could not put it down!!!

Blakelyn has left everything behind to get away to finally leave. She has finally decided to leave her abusive boyfriend and get away. She has found a furnished cabin in the middle of nowhere that she has fallen in love with, however her new neighbor isn’t necessarily welcome to start off with. Gruene is hiding from his own past his own demons that haunt him. However things shift once Blakelyn arrives. They are both still learning to let go, but it’s like they’ve needed each other. They both understand what the other has been through without ever saying a word. They are both terrified of what could be. Could things be better for them together? Neither of them want to get hurt again, but their energy together is so strong.

This was romance that was filled with lots of heart, healing, and emotion. Blakelyn and Gruene are both broken but finding ways to heal. I thought it was a good read despite the heaviness of some of the topics.

Blakelyn and Gruene are both broken, but for very different reasons. Blakelyn carries the emotional and physical scars of an abusive relationship, one that she fled, starting a new life in Juniper Falls. Gruene also carries physical and emotional scars, but he lives with his ghost, forever carrying the grief and guilt of the deaths of his wife and daughter. When they meet, they know something is different. As if sensing the others' hurt, the two of them are drawn together inextricably, forcing them to confront the hurt they carry within them.

This is a nice romance, with a lot of heart, that does have a lot to say about hurt and healing. I thought the themes of loss and trauma were handled delicately, and I would recommend this to anyone looking to read a romance about second chances and overcoming hurt. I will say, though, that I prefer my romance to be a little bit more slow-burn, with greater conflicts existing between the MCs. Although Blakelyn and Gruene had a lot of hurt and trauma to overcome, as well as the persistence of her arse of an ex, their romance and attraction to each other was relatively quick and that's not something I enjoy. Gruene and Blakelyn were interesting characters, although I did get a bit frustrated with Blakelyn repeating the same dangerous behaviour, and with Gruene for sending mixed messages. It was nice to see them grow closer and learn to open up and trust one another, and I particularly enjoyed one character getting theirs.

If you’re looking for a steamy redemption romance that’s all about second chances and overcoming hurt, then this is for you. There is a fair amount of potentially triggering topics in this book, but Turner does have a warning at the beginning of the book, which is super helpful.

A story of 2 broken souls. That the author tells beautifully. However there are some dark undertones that could be a trigger for some, so be warned. The Space Between is rocky at first but comes together wonderfully.
A story of pain, anguish, triumph, tragedy, and love it gives the reader everything they may be looking for.
Blakelyn did it! She left her abusive boyfriend. Now on the run and trying to lay low, she ends up in a podunk town in Texas. A town that’s off the grid to her, where things aren’t all out in the open so she should be harder to find. It’s time to live her life again and meeting her new neighbor may just be the beginning.
Gruene punishes himself for letting his family die while he lives on. Though an accident he would’ve given his life if it meant they survived. Now he’s living his life through the motions but not actually living. That is not until Blakelyn shows up. She’s different and just as broken as him. She sees him for who he is and not what has happened. She sees the man he was vs the everyone else who views him with pity. But can he put the past behind him? Is he willing to move forward? Blakelyn is special and he knows that, but is it enough?
When her ex finds her, he vows to do everything he can to protect her, despite holding himself back.
Will they heal one another?
So many questions and all of which are answered as you progress through the story.
Like I said in the beginning the story is told beautifully, but that’s once you can see past the dark undertones.
If you can get past that, you won’t be disappointed!

The Space Between by Skye Turner is part of the Hope Runs Deep Multi-Author Charity Collection, with 50% of proceeds going to Texas Flood Relief. This is an angsty contemporary romance about finding love after deep loss.
This is an emotional contemporary romance full of angst, finding love-after-loss, and a heartfelt exploration of grief, and the healing power of love. It comes with some trigger warnings -so if you have any concerns then you should check the TW before diving in.
The characters, (MCs) Blakelyn and Gruene, were easy to connect with so I was soon invested in them and the outcome of their story. Their journey from heartbreak to hope felt authentic and relatable, making it impossible not to root for their happiness. The chemistry between them was palpable, and the moments of vulnerability were balanced perfectly with steamy, romantic tension.
As part of the Hope Runs Deep collection, this book contributes to a meaningful cause, benefiting Kerr County, Texas, in the aftermath of devastating floods. Knowing that this story is part of a larger effort to rebuild and support a community added an extra layer of poignancy to the reading experience.
So, whether you're a fan of contemporary romances or simply looking for a story that will tug at your heartstrings, ‘The Space Between’ is definitely worth the read.
Happy Reading.

I just finished The Space Between by Skye Turner, and I honestly don’t even know where to begin. This story wrecked me in the most beautiful, gut-wrenching way.

From the very first chapter, I was pulled into Blakelyn and Gruene’s world. Two people, both carrying so much pain, living side by side but completely alone in their grief. It’s not your typical love story. It’s slower, deeper, and way more emotional than I expected, and that’s what made it so powerful.

What I loved most was how real everything felt. The trauma, the awkwardness, the guilt, the fear of wanting something again when you’re not sure you deserve it... Turner didn’t shy away from any of it. There’s this quiet intensity to the story that stays with you. At times, it was heavy, yes, but it was never hopeless.

And the chemistry? 🔥 It’s not over-the-top spice, but when it hits, it hits. The intimate moments are emotionally charged and meaningful, not just there for the sake of it. You feel the push and pull, the hesitation, the need, and that makes it all so much more satisfying.

Final thoughts:

If you’re in the mood for a slow-burn, emotionally intense, love-after-loss romance that deals with real trauma, this one is 100% worth your time. It’s tender, raw, and hopeful in a way that sticks with you long after you finish.

Just… maybe keep tissues nearby.

This was a really moving contemporary romance. It is a story about two people who have gone through loss, heartbreak and overwhelming grief finding themselves and finding hope in a future. There are some issues that may trigger some readers in this story so I do recommend checking them before you dive in.
The main characters are so engaging and captivating that I just had to know their stories, both the story that leads them to the place we find them and all the hurdles that they have to overcome to move forward with their lives.

Blakelyn Walker arrives with nothing more than a job and somewhere to live. After her escape she wants to rebuild her life on her own terms, somewhere she feels safe. The last thing she is looking for is a romance.

Gruene Cavanaugh has spent the last 6 years just trying to survive each day after an accident took everything he had and loved away from him. He has resigned himself to the fact that he will forever be alone as he doesn't deserve love and happiness.

These two people are neighbours, both with a painful past that haunts them. However in-between all the pain and hurt runs something deeper, something that could change both of their lives forever if they are only brave enough to take a chance.

Blakelyn just wants to start her life over again, she has survived and now wants to relax in the quiet of her life and just rebuild herself and Juniper Falls seems like the safe place to start. With a new job and a lovely house and a lost neighbour.

Gruene is just surviving life, he has spent the last six years with survivors grief after losing his whole family to a tragedy but each day he just pushes along and wanting to just give up on everything but when he has a new neighbour his world does not seem so bleak.

Blakelyn and Gruene interweave with each other and although they are not looking for love or a relationship there share experiences seem to help them become friends but not necessary any more but as there relationship becomes more they seem to gravitate towards each other.

This is a lovely story of resilience and survival as part of life and although they may not seem okay, eventually you find someone out of the blue who can heal your heart.

This is a beautiful telling of tragedy, but the chemistry between the two main character builds through the story and it is lovely to see the blooming of a relationship. To read how they both struggle with the growing relationship and the desires they both have it is a gripping book.

This is my first book by this author which I enjoyed reading from beginning to end. I enjoyed their writing skills and their attention to details enhances the story. I enjoyed the creative characters that are full of heart and soul. This is a story that could trigger some but if you can get past those you will find a great story and one you don’t want to miss. This is a story about healing from grief and broken hearts. Gruene and Blakelyn are great characters that will pull at your strings and keep you coming back for more at the same time. What they bring to each other’s lives neither one sees coming. Will two broken hearts but their way to healing and giving their heart a chance at something they both deserve? I enjoyed their chemistry and attraction between the two of them. Their growth along with the growth of the plot made the story entertaining to read and hard to put down. This is a fast paced story that is engaging and just a really great story. I look forward to reading more from this author in the future. I highly recommend this book.

- Emotional powerhouse
- Two lost souls

If you want a book that will put you through an emotional wringer, this is the one for you. It is raw and gritty and so powerful. Please do check the TW though.

Blakelyn is a survivor. She has finally left her boyfriend who was unkind in every way possible. She is trying to heal herself, but it is not an easy journey.

Gruene is a survivor as well, but of an accident. That same incident claimed both his wife and his daughter. The guilt and grief he feels is palpable and heartbreaking.

Blakelyn has moved in next to Gruene and they each sense a companion spirit, but neither of them is at the right place in their journeys to open their hearts. Or so they think. They start off as companions, then friends before tentatively trusting each other with themselves. However, this is not an easy road for them with both of their pasts encroaching into their newfound contentment.

My heart broke for both of these characters and I was cheering on their relationship the entire book!

I love that this author supported the Texas flood victims! Being a Texan born and raised myself, I had to support this author especially since she was helping donate to the victims!
I really enjoyed the creativity of the story and characters. The story is about healing from broken hearts and grieving. The plot of the story is very entertaining and hard to put down! I was engaged and hooked from the first page to the end! It gripped me by the heart and pulled me along to the end with it! It is very fast paced and an easy sit down and read in a day book! This book put me thru a roller coaster of emotions which I absolutely love in a book! If you have triggers please keep that in mind when getting this book. This book has loss of life, mental anguish, Self worth questioning and sabotage, domestic abuse- physical, mental and intimately. This book is real, raw, authentic and very relatable! I would recommend this book and author to all! I look forward to seeing what else she has and comes out with!

The Space Between follows the story of Gruene Cavanaugh as he tries to move through the grief of losing his wife and daughter, but the chiasm is too wide. Blakelyn Walker is also haunted by a past that won’t stay in the past, with an ex who is stalking her and a road of grief she has been walking alone. When these two paths collide, they will be drawn to each other while healing each other as well. Connecting through mutual loss allows these two to build a relationship stronger than anything else. When heat explodes between them, it will bind them together for a lifetime.
I’ve read several Skye Turner books in the past and have loved her writing style, characters, and the heat that she brings to each couple. The Space Between was a fantastic read, and while it touches on some sensitive topics (definitely check your triggers with this one!), this book will stay with you for a long time. I can’t wait to see what other stories Skye Turner comes out with in the future, as she is a definite auto-buy from me!

The Space Between: An Angsty, Love After Loss Spicy Adult Romance by Skye Turner. This is one of those raw make you cry all your tears out love stories. Its the story of Blakelyn who has arrived in this small Texas town to a cabin next to a river to hide out. She is running from her abusive ex and she is terrified. With nothing more than a few boxes and a new teaching job, she has arrived to heal emotionally and physically from her ex. Gruene lives in the other small cabin and runs a river floating business mainly for tourists. He is mending his broken heart from a unspeakable loss. He is shut off and wants nothing to do with anyone because he thinks he doesn't deserve happiness. When Blakelyn won't allow Gruene to be left alone they finally become friends. The chemistry between the two is off the charts and they end up getting into at least a physical relationship. Will Blakelyn be able to break down Gruene's walls and get into his life emotionally and will Gruene be able to teach Blakelyn that not everyone is out to hurt her? Such a powerful, emotional romance.

A connection through damaged, broken hearts, grief and pain. One is in a living grief so deep there is no light, the other is surviving pain and abuse, just! What starts as watching, a tentative touch and hello takes the characters on a winding journey of push-pull emotions. It's haunting, powerful and very raw! Worries of being found and those of survivors guilt keep this high voltage, but despite those worries chemistry is electric, it's steamy and hot, possibly too hot. They seem to connect mainly through sex, but gradually start opening up. An extremely intense read that I enjoyed though I did find myself skimming over a few of the scenes, I don't mind sexual content but it can sometimes become a little bit too much. That does not in any way take away from the story, people deal with these issues in very different ways and for these characters that was it. Moving and has a happy ending.

The Space Between: An Angsty, Love After Loss Spicy Adult Romance (Hope Runs Deep, A Multi-Author Charity Collection Benefiting Kerr County, Texas)

The moment I saw this book was to benefit Kerr County I knew i would be reading it. I don’t live there, but close enough and know people who were effected and my daughter is friends with someone who lost her younger sister. I truly appreciate the authors who are a part of this collection.

Blakelyn and Gruene are both incredibly strong people. Blakelyn ends up in Juniper Falls to start over after leaving an abusive relationship. She had no plans but to get through the summer until school starts.

Gruene lost his family to the creek and hasn't been the same sense. But something about Blakelyn breaks the wall he built around his heart .

They both get a second chance to find their happiness and have some very spicy moments in the process.

I have enjoyed reading this book, I love the storyline and the characters. Gruene who lost his wife and child to a car accident and drowned and he lived. Blakelyn who was in an abusive mentally and physically relationship finally got the courage to pack what she could and leave goes to Juniper Falls to hide meets Gruene. They help heal each other and not asking for much from either one. I have been in Blakelyn position and there are moments when it gets hard to read, but I kept going because I am proud of her for being able to get out of the situation she was in. For her to breathe again and live is inspirational. I know not everyone can do what she does, but it does give hope and to see Gruene finally chose to live and breathe even though he doesn't feel he deserves it. This is a good book to read and was hard to put down once I started reading it. Has plenty of juicy parts as well.

This is a wonderfully written book about finding love after heartbreak. Blakelyn has been heartbroken and moves to a new place. Starting her life over with a new job, she moves to a cabin. Little does she know, her neighbor, Gruene, is also suffering a great loss.
The main characters share their past and connect over what they have both been through.
They don’t mean to, but they find comfort in each other.
This story is well written. Although, there is some topics that some readers may struggle with. This book will definitely pull at your heart and your emotions. It is not all sad though, there is spicy scenes that really hook you in. This book was well worth the read!
I love the writing style and the back and forth between the characters. Recommending this book to my friends for sure!

If you’re in the mood for something emotional and a little intense, you have to read The Space Between. It’s not your typical love story even though it is super raw and emotional. It starts with two people who are both broken in different ways. I was really touched to find out they’re donating part of the proceeds to flood victims in Texas, which hits close to home for me. From the very first page I was pulled into such a captivating story. Blakelyn and Gruene are two of the most interesting and relatable characters I’ve read in a long time. Their chemistry is off the charts and impossible to ignore, but it’s not just about romance. It’s also about healing, self-worth, and the struggle to move forward. The book does touch on heavy stuff like loss and abuse, and yes, it’s definitely angsty, but it’s so beautifully written that it sticks with you long after you finish. Don’t miss it!

This was an emotional story. There are some trigger warnings for this book so be mindful of this before diving in. Blakelyn has found herself renting a cabin in Juniper Falls after leaving a physical and mental abusive relationship. Her next door neighbor, Greune keeps to himself because of the guilt and sadness he feels after the tragic loss he suffered. There is chemistry between these two and I found myself invested in their outcome. After everything both of these characters have been through I want them to find love and happiness and help each other heal from all the trauma. This author's writing style kept me glued to the pages and going through a myriad of emotions while reading. I had a hard time putting this book down which made it a quick read for me. I recommend this book.

What an emotional rollercoaster this book was! It drug me through many different emotions: angst, thrills, anger, heartbreak, hurt....it was all there! Blakelyn finally comes up with the nerve to leave her abusive boyfriend and finds a secluded cabin that exactly what she needs off the beaten path. Her neighbor leaves something to be desired but she determined to make her new lease on life work. What she doesn't know is that Gruene is working out his own demons like she is. While they're both afraid, not only of the past, but of the present and future as well, they both use each other to try to heal from what hurt them. The path is a rocky one though...
A fast paced, energetic story that gives your endorphins a rush while reading! One of my new favorite authors!

This story has the potential to be a powerful second-chance romance. Blakelyn is running from a horrible relationship, while Gruene is weighed down by immense grief.

What frustrated me most was the lack of communication between them. So much could have been resolved if they had just talked honestly. To me, their connection leaned more toward lust than love.

That said, I have a lot of respect for Blakelyn, having been in her shoes myself, and I can’t imagine the pain Gruene is carrying. It’s important for characters—and people—to allow themselves to heal and support one another, but that only works if they truly communicate.

I was happy to see Tyler get what he deserved, and I’m proud of Blakelyn and Gruene for finally finding a way to come together.

Blakelyn has finally run from her abusive boyfriend to a cozy cabin along a river in a small Texas town. She has 8 boxes and a new teaching job to look forward to while also looking back to make sure he hasn’t found her. Gruene lives in the other small cabin and runs a river floating business. He is haunted by loss and the world knows to stay away. But Blakelyn doesn’t stay away, she pushes herself into his life. This book had a lot of emotions with the loss of loved ones and domestic abuse. There was a lot of back and forth between the characters and the need to let go and move on. At some points I felt like I was rereading conversations they were having but really it took talking through things multiple times for it to sink in.

Blakelyn isn't looking for anything but a fresh start when she ends up in a small Texas town. She finally got up the courage to leave an abusive relationship and she feels like she found a good place where her ex wouldn't find her. Gruene is suffering from survivors guilt. He lost his wife and daughter in a tragic accident. Most days he fights just to make it thorugh the day. These two broken souls have been through a lot and it's amazing that they found each other. The characters are relatable and the plight each of them faces happens around us every day. If reading about anything that has to do with loss of a loved one or abuse is a trigger then this is a warning. If you are able to get past that you won't be disappointed.

Wow… this one really got me in the feels. The Space Between is emotional, messy, and angsty in all the best ways. It’s about loss, heartbreak, and that terrifying step of letting yourself love again when you’re sure it’ll only hurt.

I was hooked on the push and pull between the characters—the grief felt so real, and the way their relationship built out of that pain made it hit even harder. Don’t get me wrong, it’s plenty spicy (🔥), but the real magic here is how Skye Turner shows that healing and falling in love again can happen, even when you least expect it.

If you’re into emotional romances with a heavy dose of angst and steam, definitely give this one a try.
