Mike Miller lives in L.A. with his daughters and is a graduate of UC Berkeley and WGU. He has also overseen the subtitling and translation for hundreds of films, video games and television shows like "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy, "Seinfeld," "Madden," "Kung Fu Hustle," and "The Simpsons."

Right from the very first line on the very first page, any seasoned reader will see that this novel is unlike anything else they've ever read. Not to spoil the surprise, but this stylistic flair immediately sets this book apart from all others with something far more than a cheap gimmick. This amazing feature soundly reinforces the read in both narrative plot as well as philosophical themes. While this author's "3VIL" series employs a similarly fun trick with its unique all-black pages, the experimental formatting and design of "Scorn" is something more akin to the brilliant "House of Leaves," but without the excessive fluff, slop and noise in that composition's layout overkill. (You can go "Look Inside" on Amazon for this one right now if you doubt me. Though the eBook edition works as best it can, I see my print version is the far superior format.)
But outside of this cool and stylish element, the meat of the story is likewise amazing. One fascinating aspect to the work is the how unclassifiable the subgenre is. There is little doubt this book is pure horror with nonstop dread dripping off of every page. But the content ranges from both gruesome gore to wild madness to slow-burn suspense, and everything in between. Monster, ghost, haunted house, possession, witchcraft... all are somewhat present during the slippery combination of characters and setting. Even vampires and/or zombies are arguably included too within this tome's tricky blend of psychological and supernatural terror. This unusual premise and story should be completely lauded for defying the traditional cliches with its clever combination of rearranged horror elements.
Despite the very scary tone which permeates every page with a lingering doom, the story also has room to be both quite smart and heartfelt too. Outside of the fight for survival is a moody examination of relationships - between family and friends, all suffering and trying to heal their wounds together. There are numerous moments of tragedy that are downright sad, adding to the work's overall brutality. Between the terror and the sorrow, this book is definitely a harrowing experience filled with big, heavy emotions.
Readers unaccustomed to bold or inventive writing might not understand or enjoy the tricky plotting, heart-wrenching emotions and challenging subtext of this very literary work. But anybody aching for something new and different will love this rollicking book - one loaded with playful design, heady ideas and outright fear, all fastened to a blistering and exciting pace.
