probably the most challenging Lenten devotions I have done, even though, as an English major, I know Hopkins, and also, how to explicate poetry. Somehow even one poem a day seemed over-rich, or maybe I am out of practice. Even so, I gained so much from the discipline .
I really wanted to study Gerard Manley Hopkins wonderful nature poems glorifing God over the Lent period. However, although I naturally stumbled over a number of my favourites including God's Grandeur, Binsley Poplars and the Wreck of the Deutschland, there were a number of others unknown to me explained by Carys Walsh. Many of these I disliked which made me think again about my love of Hopkins poetry. This is not the author's fault. In fact, she always explained each line and expression very carefully even with the most obtuse of them. A great and thorough explanation of Hopkins work with real understanding of his faith.
