He took her for her magic. He didn’t expect her to steal his heart.

Natalie has spent her life protecting her family—raising her sister and caring for her ailing father in a world ruled by vampires. But when a brutal raid destroys her village, she strikes a desperate bargain: her freedom in exchange for their lives.

Taken by Rayhan, a powerful vampire warrior, Natalie is forced to use her unstable magic to solve the murder of his father. If she fails, she may never see her family again. But if she succeeds, the truth could be more dangerous than the killer himself.

Rayhan never meant to take a prisoner—but Natalie is no ordinary human. When she inadvertently unlocks memories he buried long ago, he realizes she may be the key to justice—and vengeance. What he didn’t expect was the fire between them. Now, the woman who could destroy him might also be the only one who can save him.

As deadly secrets unravel and the killer turns their sights on Natalie, desire collides with betrayal, and trust becomes the ultimate risk.

Dark magic. Forbidden romance. A fight for survival.

Can love bloom between sworn enemies—or will it become the weapon that tears them apart?

Captured by the Vampire Knight is perfect for fans of steamy vampire romance, enemies to lovers, and magic-bound fated mates.

I received an advanced copy from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

I honestly loved every second of this book.

If you’re craving a dark, addictive vampire romance with tension, mystery, magic, and very spicy scenes… this one absolutely delivers.

The author throws you straight into the story from the very beginning, and I was hooked almost instantly. Between the kidnapping, the escape attempts, the murder mystery unfolding in the background, and slowly discovering how the magic system works, there was always something happening that kept me turning the pages.

I enjoyed the dynamic between the characters. The whole captive/kidnapper tension mixed with the growing romance worked way too well for me. There’s this constant push and pull between danger, attraction, trust, and obsession that made the chemistry feel intense from start to finish.

And the spice? The spice was SPICING. The detailed scenes were incredibly well written without taking away from the plot, it was delicious for my eyes and my imagination.

I also liked the healing/disease aspect woven into the story because it added another layer of urgency and emotion beyond just the romance. Combined with the mystery of who killed who and uncovering secrets along the way, it made the book feel surprisingly immersive and hard to put down.

Tropes:
Vampires & witches
Dark romance
Kidnapper/captive dynamics
Forced proximity
Escape attempts
Murder mystery
Magic discovery
Protective yet dangerous MMC
High tension romance
Spicy paranormal fantasy

Definitely recommend this to anyone thirsty for a hot vampire obsessed with a witch 🖤🩸

This was such a fascinating dark fantasy romance unlike any others I've read before.

It follows Natalie, a selfless witch/civilian who sacrifices her freedom and life to save her family.

She is held captive by Rayhan, a powerful vampire warrior, who truly doesn't want any harm to come her way.

There were a little bit of “Touch her and 💀” moments thrown in there that I loved!

Together they explore the vampire castle, without actual permission for her to be out of her cell, to investigate the death of Rayhan’s father who mysteriously died

This story includes the famous enemies-to-lovers trope literally (as they are sworn enemies), tied in with forced proximity and the sweet meddling of fate

While I didn't so much enjoy the descriptiveness of the injuries everyone got, (I’m easily queasy) this story was a gripping, intense, emotional and all around an enjoyable read!

I am very thankful to have been given the opportunity to read this!

Captured by the Vampire Knight by A.N. Payton
4 ⭐
Right from the start, the atmosphere is heavy in a way that really pulls you in. Everything feels a bit unsafe, a bit tense, like something is always about to go wrong—and I was honestly hooked by that.

Natalie was a really solid main character for me. She’s not overpowered or unrealistically composed, she’s just trying to survive everything being thrown at her while dealing with grief, fear, and her unstable magic. I liked that she actually felt human in her reactions—messy, emotional, but still pushing forward.

Rayhan (the Vampire Knight) is very much the broody, controlled, morally grey type that I always fall for in theory and then suffer through emotionally in practice. He’s cold at first, but the dynamic between him and Natalie builds slowly in a way that actually worked for me. It’s not instant romance—it’s that slow shift from distrust to something more complicated and intense, which I personally eat up.

There’s also a murder investigation woven through everything, which keeps the plot moving. I did find myself more invested in the tension between the characters than the actual mystery at times, but it still gave the story structure and direction instead of just being vibes and angst (even though it was also very much vibes and angst).

The world feels dark and a little suffocating in places, but in a way that fits the story. It’s not cozy fantasy—it’s more like “I should probably stop reading this at 2am but I won’t” fantasy.

If I’m being honest, a few moments felt like they could’ve hit a bit harder emotionally or been stretched out more, especially around the romance. But even with that, I was still completely pulled into it.

By the end I was just fully invested in this messy, dangerous dynamic and slightly annoyed I’m now thinking about it after finishing.

If you like morally grey vampires, witches with chaotic magic, enemies-to-lovers tension, and stories that feel a bit dark and addictive, this is absolutely worth picking up.

Big thanks to A.N. Payton, NetGalley, and City Owl Press for the ARC—I really appreciate the chance to read and review it.

Book Review: Captured by the Vampire Knight by A. N. Payton
Publication Date: 5 May 2026
Rating: 4.5 ⭐️
Captured by the Vampire Knight is an addictive, tension-filled paranormal romance that blends danger, desire, and mystery into a story that’s impossible to put down. A. N. Payton delivers a compelling opening to the Eternal Alliances series, with high stakes and an emotionally charged enemies-to-lovers dynamic.
Natalie is a standout heroine—fierce, selfless, and driven by her loyalty to her family. Her resilience in the face of loss and captivity makes her incredibly easy to root for, while her unstable magic adds both vulnerability and intrigue to her character. She isn’t just surviving—she’s constantly adapting, pushing back, and finding strength in the most impossible circumstances.
Rayhan is everything you want in a dark paranormal lead—powerful, controlled, and haunted by his past. His initial motives may be cold, but as layers begin to peel back, his complexity becomes one of the most compelling aspects of the story. The connection between him and Natalie is electric, evolving from reluctant alliance to something far more intense and dangerous.
The blend of romance and mystery works exceptionally well. The investigation into his father’s murder adds depth and momentum, keeping the plot moving while the emotional tension between the characters continues to build. Secrets unfold at a steady pace, each revelation raising the stakes and pulling you further into the story.
What truly stands out is the atmosphere. The world feels dark, immersive, and filled with constant danger, where trust is fragile and betrayal always feels close. The balance between action, emotion, and romance is well executed, making the story both gripping and satisfying.
Captured by the Vampire Knight is a captivating mix of forbidden romance, dark magic, and slow-burning tension. With strong characters, high stakes, and a compelling storyline, it’s a must-read for fans of vampire romance and enemies-to-lovers dynamics.

I received this book from Netgalley as an eARC.

As a reader who loves books involving vampires, I was really excited for this story. Vampires and mysterious phantom dark magic? Sign me up! The first few chapters of the book showed promise but it soon dulled.

At one point, I almost forgot Rayhan was a dangerous vampire and that Natalie had magic. It was more of trying to figure out who murdered Rayhan's father, but without magic, which defeats the purpose of Natalie because he captured her due to her magic. We’re here for fantasy, but unfortunately it lacked that due to barely any dialogue of magic or the vampire aspect.

Rayhan could’ve been written better. I think his character threw me off the most in this story. The beginning of the book describes him as a tough dangerous vampire and then that disappears about 2-3 chapters in making him out to be too soft and caring. At one point I forgot he was a vampire because it’s not really mentioned until he’s in a fight and his wounds heal.

**SPOILERS BELOW**

I was left confused with Natalie and Rayhan’s relationship. I didn’t feel an emotional pull to them and they didn’t have any chemistry. I was hoping for tension building or slow-burn throughout the book and didn’t experience that. I was reading a chapter of them going to investigate the murder and the next thing I knew she kissed him. Which was very out of the blue and there was no sexual build up of that kiss. Their love felt forced.

Reef’s character, made me question what his relevance was in the story. I felt like he didn’t contribute anything to the story and was placed there just as a filler, which would be fine if he impacted Natalie in some way but he didn’t. He kept asking her if she was okay every other chapter which ended up causing me frustration because it was repetitive.

This book had potential because of the strong start in the first few chapters and the plot itself is decent but I can’t recommend this book. The FMC/MMC’s relationship, Rayhan's character, and lack of magic felt dull.

I went into Captured by the Vampire Knight by A.N. Payton expecting a dark romance, but I didn’t expect to get so completely pulled into its shadowy grip. From the very first chapter, I felt like I was stepping into something dangerous—something I probably shouldn’t enjoy as much as I did, but couldn’t look away from.

What really hooked me was the atmosphere. It felt heavy, almost suffocating at times, in the best way possible. I loved how the tension constantly simmered beneath the surface, making every interaction feel charged and unpredictable. The Vampire Knight? Completely my weakness. Brooding, morally grey, and just the right amount of terrifying—I found myself both drawn to him and wary of him the entire time.

I also really connected with the protagonist. Her fear, confusion, and resilience felt genuine, and I appreciated that she didn’t just fall into everything easily. The relationship dynamic was intense and complicated, and I liked that it leaned into that darker, more obsessive edge rather than trying to soften it.

That said, there were a few moments where the pacing slowed down for me, and I found myself wanting certain scenes to hit just a bit harder emotionally. But honestly, it didn’t take away from how much I was enjoying the overall experience.

By the end, I was fully immersed in this dark, seductive world—and I’m still thinking about it. If you love romance that walks the line between danger and desire, this one is definitely worth picking up.

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

I really wanted to enjoy this one, but unfortunately, it fell flat for me. The biggest hurdle was the characterization; both the FMC and the MMC felt incredibly juvenile in their interactions. I found myself constantly having to remind myself that MMC was supposed to be this fearsome, powerful Vampire Knight because his actions and dialogue just didn't command that presence.

The world-building and the stakes suffered from a lack of consistency. The dichotomy of the FMC being a prisoner while simultaneously receiving all sorts of perks and special treatment completely killed the enemies to lovers angle for me. If she is the enemy and a captive, she should be treated as such to make the eventual romantic shift feel earned.

I kept waiting for the author to lean into the potential tension between Natalie and the other prisoners regarding her special food and privileges. I thought it would have been a brilliant move if the MMC was intentionally giving her perks to put a target on her back, creating a different kind of danger, but that whole plot point was largely swept under the rug. Instead, any brewing resentment was quickly resolved with brief explanations of her sharing her food, which felt like a missed opportunity for actual conflict. The dark and dangerous vibes were undercut by characters that lacked maturity and a plot that played it too safe.

When I say I devoured this book in one sitting with minimal breaks for food and being a person, I mean it. From around 6pm until just after 1am this book absolutely consumed me, with me wanting to continue reading to find out the mysteries that lay within. If there's anything negative to say I would say this: I feel we were thrown in extremely quickly at the beginning with very little explanation before the action started, and also I feel like the relationship between Natalie and Rayhan developed very quickly without very much pining. However that is definitely just a couple of personal preferences, and I'm sure others will love the pacing in these two cases!

Regarding the characters, I am glad the focus was placed on the main couple over others in this case, as the fact that they were working together let us learn about them more often. I appreciate that Rayhan, while a vampire, wasn't your typical black-haired purple-eyed tattooed bad boy, and showed a softer side immediately which was added to when it came to his painting. The interactions with other characters felt natural and while I feel the killer reveal wasn't unsurprising, I feel it made sense and was satisfying in my opinion!

Captured by the Vampire Knight is a dark, tension filled paranormal romance that blends mystery, magic, and a slow burn enemies to lovers dynamic.

From the beginning the atmosphere is heavy. The world feels dangerous and unforgiving, and that constant sense of unease adds to the story’s pull. It’s not a light fantasy.....there’s a darker tone throughout that keeps the stakes high.

Natalie isn’t perfect or overly powerful. She’s dealing with grief, fear, and the pressure of protecting her family, all while trying to control magic she barely understands. Her emotional responses felt authentic, which made it easy to connect with her.

Rayhan is controlled, cold, and driven by vengeance, but as the story progresses, more layers are revealed. His dynamic with Natalie develops gradually, shifting from distrust into something more complicated. The slow build worked well and made their connection feel earned.

The murder investigation adds a strong backbone to the story. While the romance and character tension are the main draw, the mystery keeps the plot moving and adds intrigue.

The pacing has a few slower moments, but overall the story remains engaging. The combination of dark magic, emotional tension, and evolving relationships makes this a compelling start to the series.

Vampires and Witches? Yes! Let's go!

Natalie is taken from her family home by Vampire Knight Rayhan (a redhead, which we love) and pulled into a murder investigation to uncover who killed his father.

As a witch Natalie’s magic is unpredictable but we can already feel there's some major power hidden away. She is shadowed by a large, ghostly phantom, which was a super intriguing concept.

I did find the story leaned more heavily into the murder mystery than the magic. I would have loved a bit more focus on the danger and tension of their relationship as well. Given he’s a vampire, it sometimes felt like he could have been any other magical being without much changing.

That said, the pacing kept me hooked. There’s plenty of investigation, suspect questioning, and twists to keep the mystery engaging throughout.

I did find the time period slightly confusing. It had a fantasy feel overall, but modern terms like coroner and lab pulled me out of that setting a little.

Overall, if you enjoy a solid murder mystery with a touch of magic and romance, this is definitely one to pick up.

I gave Captured by the Vampire Knight 3 stars. While I enjoyed parts of the story, it felt much more aimed towards a YA audience than adult romantasy readers. The writing is very easy to follow, and both the characters and overall plot felt quite young in tone and behaviour.

For a fantasy/romantasy, I was expecting more depth in the world-building and more complexity from the characters. The enemies-to-lovers trope also didn’t fully land for me. While there are elements of it, the MMC is quite soft from the beginning and seems interested in the FMC almost immediately. Personally, when I pick up an enemies-to-lovers romance, I expect genuine hatred, tension, and the feeling that they might actually try to kill each other before the romance develops.

That said, I do think this would make a good introduction to romantasy for YA readers or for people who are newer to the genre. The story has potential, and with this being the first book in a series, I can definitely see room for growth in both the author’s writing and the wider story going forward.

A vampire and a witch? Ooh, yes, please! But this one just didn’t quite hit for me.

The premise is there, but the pacing threw me off. This book has supernatural intrigue, enemies-to-lovers, and a murder mystery thrown into the mix. And yes, technically, it is a mystery — there’s a lot of investigating, questioning, and talking to suspects. But instead of tension building, the story seems to get stuck in long, detailed descriptions that stall everything.

The vampire is pretty forgettable. He doesn’t feel dangerous. And the romance misses — there’s no tension building, and then suddenly the relationship moves forward, and it’s like “wait — what just happened?” With no emotional payoff.

The last 20% of the book does improve; the pacing tightens up, and things begin to happen. So if you’re totally into vampire and witch vibes, you may want to try this one.

Thank you NetGalley and Owl City Press for the ARC!

I went in expecting dark romance… and got completely consumed 🩸

✨ Vibes: dark, suffocating atmosphere + constant tension
🖤 MMC: broody, morally grey, slightly terrifying (my weakness)
🔥 Trope check: enemies → something way more dangerous
💫 FMC: resilient, emotional, actually struggles (we love to see it)

This book is ALL about that push-pull between danger and desire. Every interaction feels charged, every secret raises the stakes, and the slow unraveling of the hero?? chef’s kiss.

There’s mystery, forbidden romance, unstable magic, and a relationship that leans obsessive in the best way.

Only small gripe: pacing dips a bit in places BUT honestly, I was too hooked to care.

If you like:
🩸 dark paranormal romance
🩸 broody vampire men
🩸 tension you could cut with a knife
🩸 high stakes + emotional damage

…you’ll eat this up. I’m still thinking about it.

This book was not exactly what I expected, a fantasy mystery,  but still very entertaining.

Let me explain a little bit. Yes, there is magic ( somewhat unpredictable) and she is a witch and he is a vampire. Yes they fall in love ( although I do not understand that completely because they really do not seem to know each other well enough, it just pops up) Except the falling in love part all the main and secondary characters are relatable and believable.

But The main thread is kind of a medieval murder mystery, it reminded me personally of the stories about medieval detective monk Cadfael by Ellis Peters.  I mean that as a compliment because like those, this story is unpredictable and kind of original.

So the book felt like a strange mix of 2 genres ( the murder mystery working slightly better than the fantasy part) but it worked out fine, and I enjoyed reading it.

I enjoyed this one, it was a good vampire x witch forbidden romance with captive x captor vibes, enemies to lovers, and overall a cool lore world building.

Rayhan was a classic brooding, morally gray MMC that you just can't help but love and Natalie was a great FMC that you rooted for throughout the story. I enjoyed their romance quite a bit, it definitely had some awkward moments but that just added to the enemies-to-lovers bit to me.

I do think overall the pacing was a bit slow, but it was also a slow burn so I don't think that's necessarily a bad thing. The story was good, the characters were intriguing, and I enjoyed the world building. Definitely would recommend!

Captured by the Vampire is an entertaining romantic fantasy taking place in a world ruled over by vampires.
FMC Natalie spends her time protecting her family, caring for her sister and tending her ailing father.
Then a day comes when their village is attacked by raiders, and life will never be the same again for her family after she offers her life in place of her families to the Vampire MMC Rayhan.

I enjoyed this tale of magic, Vampires, family dynamics, enemies-to-lovers, betrayal, secrets, danger, action, adventure, emotion, and passion.
Nice writing, and characters in a steamy good read that ends up for the two leads as fated mates.

I really enjoyed this book. It’s a dark fantasy romance with vampires, witches, mystery, and a really good enemies to lovers romance. I really enjoyed the characters.
Natalie our FMC gives herself up to save her family and ends up trapped with Rayhan, a vampire knight who slowly becomes protective of her. I loved watching their relationship grow from distrust to something more, a true enemies to lovers story.
Rayhan get's Natalie to help him try to figure out how his dad died. The mystery around Rayhan’s father’s death kept the story interesting, and the dark atmosphere made it hard to put down.
If you like morally grey vampires, witches, and slow-burn romance, this is definitely worth reading.

Natalie, a witch with unpredictable magic, is taken away from her home by Rayhan, a vampire knight. Rayhan wants to use Natalia’s magic to solve the mystery of his father’s minder not knowing Natalie has no control of her magic that was locked away by her mother without the help of a phantom that is haunting her.

I am a little disappointed in the world building. It was lacking especially with the “rules” for the vampires because it seems like there is no negative reaction to the sun. The plot was more “murder mystery” than I though it was going to be, but over all a good read.

I received this book as an ARC from the through Netgalley

Natalie, a witch, finds herself kidnapped by Rayhan, a vampire as he thinks she can solve his father's murder with her magic. I saw other reviews and have to agree that this was more of a fantasy mystery than a dark romance. I didn't find it dark at all. It was interesting that a book with vampires wasn't very vampire-y. However, the world building and the plot had me hooked. Even with only a few spicy scenes, the plot was the main star. I enjoyed this book and the characters. I wished the FMC had a bit more self-confidence though This book packed a lot into a standalone and I am thankful Netgalley provided this to read!

A Thank you to NetGalley for the ARC ♡

I wanted to love this book.. but it fell flat to me. The constant “ I can’t do this” “ I have no magic” was very annoying. The FMC gave nothing but complaining. I definitely didn’t feel any tension or feelings between the fmc and mmc it felt rushed and sloppy and I hated when he would refer to her as “ girl “.
It was supposed to be enemies to lovers but it didn’t feel like that at all, she immediately got special treatment from the mmc when she was captured, there was no harsh treatment just insta love.. overall this book lacked world building, character development & consistency.

Natalie, a citizen and witch, it's taken by a knight of the vampire king. Witches and vampires are enemies and Rayhan would've let her go but touching her sparked her compressed magic. The images Rayhan sees are enough to want to keep this witch and force her up work with him too solve his father's death. From being held in the dungeon, being hated for being a witch, and being admired for her bravery, Natalie's life changes when she crosses the vampire knight.

I am a sucker for vampire stories (yes that is my terrible joke 😂)

I did really enjoy the mystery of solving the issue at hand, without giving away the story. I actually didn’t successfully work it out!

I loved their relationship and their growth together.

I do however wish the ending had more depth, was a little confused how there wasn’t much clarity with their relationship after such a big moment from the FMC.

However it is a great book, and I really recommend it if you like romance, vampires, murder mystery and magic.

A.N. Payton has completely hooked me with the first installment of Eternal Alliances. Captured by the Vampire Knight is the perfect blend of high-stakes tension and slow-burn chemistry. The world-building is rich and shadowy, creating a backdrop where the line between enemy and lover is razor-thin. If you’re looking for a vampire romance that feels fresh yet classic, you’ve found it. I’m already desperate for Book 2!

This was a pro good enemies to lovers. For Natalie to give herself to Rayhan to save her city was very brave. But Rayhan didn’t want her just for a deal. He wanted her power so he could find out who mur3red his father. But as time went by they came to a few realizations. They weren’t sure if that was an answer that would not be damaging, and they were also forming a deep connection. An attraction was developing and that changed so much. I loved the tension between them. The world building was great as well. I really liked reading this.

An enjoyable vampire read full of action with a few twists, wonderful characters and a mystery that needed to be solved.

Wow, this one took me by surprise.
A new author for me - in a genre I enjoy.
I expected to like it, the more I read, the more I loved it.
The MCs were so well written, and so well paced.
It was believable and the FMC didn’t diminish who she was for their relationship which I loved.
This was different to what I’ve read in this genre, the magic system so interesting.
The world building so well done.
Really recommend this

If the only way to save your dad was to leave behind your sister and team up with a vampire, would you? Have you heard of a vampire painting to calm down? What happens whenever you can't let go of feeling responsible for the death of your mother? You'll find the answers and even more questions when you pick up this book.

I thoroughly enjoyed this fast paced read about a witch and a vampire. Those closest to you might not be who you think they are.
