Much like with the Oni Press Compact Comics I started to collect, I unfortunately fell down a similar rabbit-hole with the IDW Classic Collection. Do not get me wrong, these are fantastic deals for some great stories. However, the last thing I need to do is spend more money on comic-books. So, before I give this one away to someone who will hopefully love it, I wanted to read and review this gigantic Godzilla graphic novel.
This is capping off a trilogy of compact comics that I read all in one day. Each one has gotten better, both in terms of the writing, but also in just sparking my interest. I like Godzilla, so this was right up my alley, even if I am not a total fanatic for the franchise.
Rulers of Earth was like a Godzilla movie on drugs, and I mean that in the best possible way. While they are still too many boring human characters and aliens who control these creatures, it is the big monster mashes that make this worth it.
In this comic, you get to see basically every kaiju in the Godzilla canon battle it out. It even includes deeper cuts, like Jet Jaguar and Zilla (from the 1998 American remake). It is awesome, as is the artwork throughout. However, much like how I have no idea what is going on in most Godzilla movies; I was completely lost while reading this. I was speed-reading to an extent, but it was as convoluted as a Japanese monster flick usually is — for better or worse.
Regardless, if you are a Godzilla fan, then this is a must-read. The IDW Classic Collection is a bit pricer than what DC Comics and Oni Press produce, but it is still a solid deal. Give it a try, but do not be pressured to buy every single release of this line as I originally was.
Fortunately, this graphic novel has page numbers throughout. This, alongside being able to tell when one comic ends and the next begins, makes it very easy to share some of my annotations in the format I like doing them in. Here are a select few:
- Page 22: I almost gasped when Zilla showed up. While the movie is terrible, I have a nostalgic soft-spot for the 1998 American remake of Godzilla. Seeing the original fight his butchered remake was fantastic, as it is basically a longer version of the fight from Final Wars — pure awesomeness.
- Page 72: Although I figured out their involvement earlier, I did roll my eyes at the fact that aliens were in this. Evil aliens controlling monsters is a staple of the film franchise, but I always just laughed at it. At least this time they do not just like humans with bad makeup and costumes on.
- Page 129: Seeing character like Gigan and Moguera show up just makes me happy. Most of these appearances are just cameos that only last for a few panels, but it is still so cool to see the full roll-call here.
- Page 142: The aura that Jet Jaguar has is unmatched. He may look like a big robotic idiot, but he is the best. I own Godzilla vs. Megalon on VHS, so he holds a special place in my heart.
- Page 173: Biolante is another favorite of mine, as I think they are the most underrated kaiju. The fight scene with Godzilla that follows is fantastic, as the clashing colors of the atomic breath and the orange flames is phenomenal.
- Page 320: An army of all of the models of Mechagodzilla on in one panel? This may be the greatest comic-book ever written in history.
- Page 322: The idea of the old-school Mechagodzilla being a relic of the Soviet Union is so cool. It gives me major Fallout vibes and is a fantastic variant cover for this comic.
- Page 330: I know I do not say this often, but hear me out. The two alien/spy ladies in the military uniforms with the white eyes? Yeah, my secrets are yours — I am madly in love.
- Page 581: This has a great conclusion, with all of the ally kaiju dragging Godzilla back out to sea to try to save him. It is kind of heartwarming, even if so many of these monsters have caused more property damage and death than any bomb in existence.
Anyway, that is it for Godzilla: Rulers of Earth and my trilogy of reviews for these compact comics I will be giving away. This is peak fiction. I would say this is a 5 star read but the beginning was hard for me to get into but it wasn’t bad. Just personal feelings that I can’t quite justify, but it 100% added even more to Godzilla and other kaijus’ aura. The last couple issues literally made me ascend. What’s a high tier human to a low tier kaiju?👑

DNF. Collection of 25 comics is one thick book. All kinds of monsters make an appearance.
