Calianna Grace doesn’t know how much longer she can tell herself that she doesn’t want more out of life. She works hard so she can stand on her own two feet, not wanting any charity from the close friends she has found over the years. She’s gotten used to working her many jobs and has become too comfortable in the stagnant relationship she developed during her time in Deadgrove. But it isn’t enough, and she knows sooner or later, something is going to go wrong if she doesn’t do something about it.
Holt Prescott is a con man on the run. After being discovered in a compromising situation by his boss, he is forced to flee the big city of New Lanta. Now not only is he on the run from the law but also the biggest mob boss New Lanta has ever seen. When his motorcycle breaks down in a dead-end town that doesn’t even have a stoplight, he knows he has officially hit rock bottom.
When Holt stumbles into the only restaurant in town, road weary and exhausted, he saves Cali from a nasty spill. Suddenly, the little town doesn't seem quite so boring anymore, and Cali finds herself wishing that it was. She decides that the best course of action is to avoid the handsome, smooth talking stranger, and Holt decides that he only wants her. While trying to get enough money to replace the part he needs for his motorcycle, he does what he can to get a job working alongside Cali. However, the job she gets him at the church doesn't quite turn out the way he expects. After spending more time together, Holt learns that Cali is more than a pretty face, and Cali realizes that Holt isn’t the man she first assumed he was. Between church services and getting ready for the harvest party, their feelings for each other slowly start to change. But when Holt’s past comes to call, will the two of them be strong enough to face it? Or will Holt’s past sins ruin their lives before they can even start?
I received an advance digital copy of this novel from the author. All thoughts and opinions are entirely my own.
Southern Charm is not your average Christian romance, even considering the ways in which the genre has blossomed and grown over the past few years. For one thing, it’s edgy. In terms of content and certain elements of the plot, including the qualities of one of the perspective characters, this book blazes into some difficult territory that isn’t often tread in books with a Christian worldview.
Our male lead, Holt, is a con-man on the run, and is very much not a Christian when he saunters onto the page. Because of this, the story has the feel of some spicy romances in the beginning, with a lot of sexual tension and objectification. But wow, does Jesus gets a hold of him. Even if the Holt starts down that path chasing after a woman. It's amazing what God can use to change a heart. But if you're someone who struggles with lust or is just coming out of a smut habit, this might be a trigger for you, even though the characters don't actually surrender to that tension.
Also, Cali, our female perspective, is technically in a relationship at the beginning of the book, even if it's been rocky and stagnate for quite some time. There is no actual cheating, but there’s some conflict there. In other words, the romance is messy in the beginning. But this is more true to life for some readers than the more clean-cut romances of many Christian novels in the genre. I’m thankful that hasn’t been my personal experience, but this is a book that might make readers who have struggled their way through similar relationship drama feel seen and understood. There are also a couple of on-page sexual assaults that thankfully don't culminate. But if that's a trigger for you, be aware that you'll find that here.
I enjoyed Cali as a character. She is surrounded by overprotective men, and most of her friends are male, which is the boat I have often found myself in. I can see this book being the first in a series, with Hitch and Havoc and Boon getting their own stories. Cali is also a Christian and a bookish musician, which makes the two of us kindred spirits. I loved her love for stories and her passion for music. Part of me wishes there had been a bit more focus given to those aspects of her instead of the romance always taking center stage.
There were certain elements of the writing that were stronger and more successful than others. I thought the characterization and faith element were great. But I struggled some with the dialogue. The Southern-ization of it all became a bit much after a while. For instance, every word that should end in -ing ended instead in -in'. Thinkin' instead of thinking, lyin' instead of of lying, etc. And then there’s wanna in place of want to, ya instead of you, and so on. I’m as Southern as they come, but I found this decision tedious until I was finally able to convince my mind to ignore it and read the dialogue as if that element wasn’t a factor. But this is an incredibly subjective issue that likely won’t bother most readers.
Overall, I very much enjoyed this book. I read through it very quickly, and found myself staying up late into the night to find out what was going to happen next. The character development and the faith thread were incredibly strong, and I loved the themes of God’s forgiveness and second chances. While some of the content might be triggering for more sensitive readers, this edgy Christian romance is well worth reading.
This book was such a great mix of Christian romance and a bit of suspense! I’m so glad I got the chance to be an ARC reader for this one because it completely lived up to my expectations! One of my favorite parts was seeing how much the MMC changed from the beginning to the end. His growth felt real, and I loved watching how the story let that unfold. The suspense throughout the book kept me hooked, and honestly, it made the romance feel even stronger. The way he pursued her and didn’t give up on her was so sweet. But it wasn’t one of those perfect, unrealistic love stories either. It showed that people are flawed, and that made everything feel more realistic. If you like clean romance with real character development and just enough tension to keep you flipping pages, you’ll love this one as much as I did.
I devoured this book in just 48 hours despite a crazy busy schedule because I simply couldn’t put it down. I was up until 2 a.m. finishing it, completely hooked, and I loved how everything came together in the end 💗
The character development was incredible, especially with Holt. Watching his growth was one of my favorite parts. I loved how hardworking Cali was, and Holt’s sweetness toward her just melted me 🥹 Their relationship felt genuine and heartfelt. And the friend group? Absolutely amazing. The way they protected Cali like she was their own sister added so much depth and warmth to the story 🥰
The suspense was so well done. It kept me on edge from beginning to end and hit all the right notes without ever feeling over the top. If you’re looking for a book with heart, tension, and characters you’ll fall in love with, this one’s a must-read. I seriously can’t wait for the rest of the series 🫶🏻
What a story! First a bit of business.. From the onset, the author makes it clear that this story is gritty and has some elements that could be difficult for some readers. I encourage you to push past those if you can. None are presented in an inappropriate or graphic way. Holt, the MMC, is not a Christian for part of the book (not a spoiler.. this is revealed upfront in the author's warnings). As such, his actions and attitudes are in no way Christlike or godly. But again, the author presents them in a way that is not explicit or graphic. There are 2 scenes in the book that contain violence. Neither is long and dawn out and, again, not graphic and explicit but they are each descriptive and not something you can gloss over.. you feel those scenes and, for me, that was necessary to the story.
SO now.. on to the story.. as much as I loved Cali and even Holt, I loved the "side" characters. There is no doubt this is found family and I love how they love and care for each other. Sidenote: I am hopeful the future books in this series will feature some of those characters.
Watching Cali and Holt's relationship blossom and develop is painful at times and overall beautiful. Urie doesn't sugarcoat or hide the feelings they have for each other.. even the ones that are more or a carnal nature.. even in Cali (Christian's deal with physical temptations too!). But what I truly loved was watching the work of God in Holt's life. I love that it was a process... that his struggles didn't just magically disappear. I love how the community rallied round him. Loved the Pastor and his patience, wisdom and guidance. He sees who Holt could be before Holt even looks that way.
This one feels real. I honestly can imagine someone sharing this testimony in church and not even doubting the truth of it.
Gritty.. Faithfilled.. Real.. doesn't get much better than that!
thank you so much to the author for sending me an ARC!!! this is a contemporary christian romance that centers around cali- small town girl, works too many jobs, you know the drill-and holt, con man, not super godly, on the run. notes for the hardcore christian readers: this has a lot of action (specifically at the second half but all throughout) and some lusty-ness (specifically in the first half of the book before holt finds Christ). holt undergoes a really lovely and believable redemption arc. i love the side characters (i always love the side characters) especially ricky and havoc. i knocked one star off because it felt a bit slow at times. but i am so happy with my first fall themed read of the year!
Spice: some descriptive kissing, lustful thoughts from a man before he finds God
Language: none
Holt is a con man on the run. He was working for a mob boss when he made the mistake of sleeping with the man’s wife. Now he’s making his way across the country to hide, not caring who he steals from or seduces for fun along the way.
He breaks down in a small town and has to wait to fix his bike. He figured, why not have some fun for the few days he’s stuck. He meets Cali and instantly knows he needs to have her. He will seduce and tease her, sleep with her, and move on to the next town.
The problem is, Cali, though attracted to him, won’t let him take advantage of her.
Cali is working herself to the bone trying to make ends meet. She’s a good looking woman who seems to be fending men off left and right. She has a heart of gold and is a God fearing woman who just wants to make a better life for herself.
It was interesting getting to see Holt’s POV change from very lustful to actually caring and love.
I liked how her friend group of guys were always there to watch out for Cali.
The book was a little slow for me up until about 70% when things got a little wild.
It seemed a little unrealistic to me that so many different men would try to take advantage of Cali in her small town so close together (and then multiple acts of revenge against Holt followed closely).
But I did believe that Holt’s old boss would come for revenge and target the woman Holt loved.
A good story with Christian themes, just a little slow for me.
Southern Charm really blew my breath away! It’s the second Christian Romance novel I’ve read and I absolutely adored it. I am so, so thankful to have gotten an Advanced Reader Copy from the author, and all opinionated my own. 🥰
I don’t think I’ve really got spoilers here but I’m going a bit in depth. So fair warning in advance in case you may not want to see that.
💚Holt is my favorite character hands down. As someone who is coming from the dark romance/romantasy world (not too dark, like a mid to darkish grey if you will), I enjoy a bit of ‘morally grey’. His character arc from the beginning of the book, where he was very questionable in his actions, to the end where he was willing to protect Cali at any cost, praying to God for Him to protect her and not himself, was beautiful. It was so refreshing to see a man in a novel humble himself before God to ask for forgiveness, strength, courage, and a new life. Holt was a great representation of what it’s like to come from following the world to following Christ. His story is inspiring. He was a flirty man through the whole novel, but only with Cali. Holt’s previous transgressions were forgiven and he was able to move forward in a better life.
💕Cali was a sweet character. I really enjoyed her obedience, courage and humility. I think she showed a great deal about how it looks to stick to your morals and not stray, even when tempted. She was such a strong character in such a meek way. Meek, not weak. She was a hard worker, not taking no for an answer when life would kick her down. She was a true and honest friend to those around her. Beautifully written FMC.
💙The side characters. Loved. Them. I cannot wait to read about these alpha males and how they meet someone who they will be tender with. Havoc is probably going to be my favorite. I can already tell he will be the one ready to burn down the world for his woman. 🤌🏼 Hitch is going to be a goofy, fun loving guy, but I bet he has hidden struggles as well, that he will have to work through. Boon is going to be such a fun onion to peel back layers on and see what is keeping him from fully committing and opening up. I believe when he does, he may be the most devoted one of them all. Ricky was adorable. Such a great little hype man. There is such devotion between all the characters in a platonic way. You know that they will all 100% have each others back no matter what the cost. Dale, the pastor, was a quiet character, but absolutely crucial. He made me contemplate some of my own inner workings as I’m growing closer to God myself.
🧡The plot was well thought out. There was some suspense as Cali would find herself in not great situations. The Halloween time frame was sweet. It was a bit slow for me, but I do believe it was imperative to building the change happening in the characters. The ending would be rough if you have a trigger from domestic violence. But it was very well written and I believe would be empowering to someone as well.
💛 One of my favorite scenes was after the ‘big incident’. The tender moments that came from the trauma. Havoc absolutely kicking butt and taking names during the incident and honestly throughout the whole book lol.
❤️🔥 My heart is happy and content after finishing this book. I’m excited to dig into the rest of the series as they hit the shelves. And this one? For sure a shelf trophy.
🩶 I believe that even if you aren’t a Christian you would enjoy this novel. The characters and plot are well thought out. They have wonderful character arcs and the self reflection and work is incredible. This is a clean read with nothing more than some cuddles and kisses.
❤️ Well done, CC Urie! Incredible read. I can’t wait to dig into the rest of the series!!
Southern Charm pulled me in from the first chapter. There’s a raw authenticity to it. The whole setting contributes to this feeling, along with the characters, their struggles, and the circumstances. It’s all woven together with grit and perseverance. Moreover, there’s faith.
If it has ever felt like life chewed you up and spat you out, this book has much to consider. Circumstances affect us, can shape us and set us on a destructive path. Or … we can cling to God, hold on to what we have in Him, and know our faith is worth more than purified gold (see 1 Peter 1:7).
Although one particular element of the story frequently reoccurs, it also reminded me of when we hope something is finally over … only to be blindsided. Then, we have to cling to what we know.
If I have to pick a favorite part, it would be difficult, but it would be between the moment when Cali chooses to hold on to what is important to her, when the meaning of repentance is clearly shown, or Havoc’s selflessness and steadiness.
Now, I do have a problem with liking side characters too much, but Havoc could have his own series, just saying 🤭 However, I would be happy to just read his book, so I hope we get his story! I also really want to read a book about Boon, and I may be too optimistic, but there’s a female character in the background who hopefully reappears in another book. 📚
As for Holt, the MMC, his character arc is done really well. The turning point speaks to broader application, because even though it may be something else for each of us, it is call to see in ourselves what we are quicker to notice in others.
It is important to note that this book does include s*xual haras*ment and a*sault in more than one way.
Overall, the feel of the story is a mix of a TV show that can easily be binged and faith themes that give food for thought. I really enjoyed reading this book, and I can’t wait for the next one! 🧡
Content: -Christian fiction -Intimacy level: Kisses Only | One kiss in particular is more descriptive | Strong physical attraction, especially from the MMC’s PoV. That said, it’s part of his character arc. -Language: Mild (one d*mned) | Innuendo -Violence -S*xual harassment and a*sault -Alcohol -Halloween
*I received a complimentary eARC from the author. All opinions expressed are my own.
Don’t let this sweet cover fool you! This is a bold, gritty Christian romance (by that I mean, it has a main character who does things prior to giving his life to God that most Christian novels don’t touch) that’s also small town with a loving pastor and an amazing found family but also with some mafia vibes and a touch of suspense.
I enjoyed this book a lot and looking forward to getting more stories in this small town!
Some quotes: “His breath caught, and he knew that leaving wasn’t an option. It never had been. The only choice he ever had was her. And Holt knew that it would take him a lot longer than seven years to deserve her.”
“She wanted to storm after Holt and demand to know the rules of this new game he’d started but instead plastered the smile she used at the tavern on her face and turned to the women.”
“One of his hands moved from her waist and tangled in her hair. He pulled back just enough to rasp, “I’m sorry.” He pressed his lips to hers again. “I shouldn’t—I’m no good for you,” he said between fevered kisses. “I’ve tried to leave you be, but I couldn’t. I—” Cali shut him up by pulling him closer.”
“Cali couldn’t always articulate the emotions inside her, but God gave her music, so that’s what she used. The melodies changed, and soon songs poured from her lips. Here in the sanctuary, she was safe and alone. She could be as exposed and vulnerable as she wanted, and no one but her Lord would see. And she needed Him to see her tonight. Cali needed His comfort and for Him to make things better because she knew she couldn’t do it on her own. He was the only one who truly and completely held her heart. It was black and blue and battered…and as her songs filled the sanctuary, Cali could feel Him wrapping His fingers around it. She would hurt for a while, but with God safeguarding her heart, Cali knew that things would eventually get better.”
Thanks to the author for a complimentary copy of the book to read in exchange for an honest review.
Thank you C. C. Urie for giving me the opportunity to be an ARC reader for the first time! I'm so glad I got to participate, and will gladly ARC more in the future.
I'm going to be honest, the first two chapters were not giving me much hope. In fact, my initial response was that this book was going to be 2 stars because those first two chapters annoyed me so much. I didn't understand why I needed to know about the color of the jacket that Cali was struggling to put on the back of a stool. And the constant leering of nearly every male guy over Cali and other women.... it was like, I knew our MC was going to do that... but all but our main 5 dudes want to bed this girl... what power does she have over them. I understood the explanation by the end, but it was annoying. And the fact that Cali was always aware of the stares, but almost didn't seem to have enough self respect just... look, I've been harassed at several of my jobs, but it was always taken super seriously; and there are times here I felt it wasn't taken seriously enough.
I stayed pretty annoyed with the book until the moment that made me cry. Cali talks to God through music, and there is a scene where she is pouring out her heart to God on the piano. This was the turning point for me in the story.
Holt's conversion and change actually is really believable, even if the timeline seems short. The characters all acknowledge this, but God does work dramatic change in some lives very speedily.
From the 45% mark forward, I was hooked. Suddenly I could forgive my tiny annoyances with Cali because I was actually finding the transformation of Holt both believable and beautiful. The transition of his words of obsessing over Cali's looks to obsessing over her heart..... Aaaaggghhhhh!!!!!! I loved it so much!!
Like I said, opening was a bit rough, but because I wanted to respect the author as an ARC reader, I kept going. And I am so glad that I did!!!
I received Southern Charm as an ARC book. It’s a great book about God’s mercy and grace and how we can be redeemed no matter our past.
Cali is a hard-working, young Christian woman who moved to Deadgrove, a small town, a few years prior. She works multiple jobs just to get by and deals with a lot of nasty men who don’t appreciate her Christian lifestyle/choices. Holt is a con-man in the run who gets stuck in Deadgrove when his motorcycle breaks down. He stumbles upon Cali and immediately sees her as a girl he can bed while passing through town. Though they have instant chemistry, Cali isn’t as easy of a woman that Holt thought she would be. Can Holt convince Cali that he’s the man for her?
*this book does contain trigger warnings for assault, SA, kidnapping, inappropriate thoughts and actions, and innuendos*
**spoilers below** Throughout the book, Cali and Holt struggle with their feelings for each other. Not only does Cali get assaulted multiple times, but she finds out that Holt isn’t much better than the other guys in town who only want her for her body. Holt goes through process of realizing that how he thinks about Cali is wrong and, with the help of the local Pastor, he turns his life to God.
I personally struggled with the beginning of the book due to the Holt’s inappropriate thoughts about Cali as it can be quite uncomfortable. He does get better as the book goes along and it’s interesting to hear his inner dialogue as he starts to fight against his old self and who the man God is calling him to be.
I loved the redemption arc of this book. It’s nice to see how the Pastor and other characters supported Holt on his journey and how God used Holt’s situation for good.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
If you enjoy gritty characters with real issues who experience the transforming mercy of Christ, you will enjoy this book.
Cali is working multiple jobs in a small town just in order to make ends meet. Holt is passing through when his motorcycle breaks down. The two meet at one of Cali’s jobs and Holt has a hard time convincing himself to leave town once his bike is repaired - even though he’s on the run.
What I enjoyed: I enjoyed that the characters were real and flawed and how they both experienced the forgiveness of Christ and exhibited changed behavior as a new creation of Christ. It has strong romance elements with some swoony kisses and a hero that rescues Cali on more than one occasion. The second half of the book was my favorite as it contained more action and some suspense. That’s when I really felt more invested in the characters.
What I didn’t love: Nearly every single man in the entire town objectifies Cali (except for the few who are her friends) and she takes jobs that could put her in compromising situations. I understood that she needed to make enough to afford rent, but it was sometimes frustrating because I felt like she didn’t always use wisdom. I did get a little tired of reading about her attributes and features and how all the men treated her/looked at her. And be aware that several of the main characters all have names that start with “H.” A few times I had to go back and re-read some pages because I confused the characters.
The book contains a pretty swoony romance and characters with real problems and difficult pasts. And the book also has strong Christian elements and emphasizes how the Gospel changes us as we become Christ followers.
This book gave me everything I didn’t even know I needed! I’m so thankful that was chosen to receive an ARC of this ‘Southern Charm’ because it really he,led me recognize that there are several sub categories to Christian romance! This book is the first in the series so the author did a pretty good job doing some world building, establishing characters, mainly make characters that will have their own books on the future which I’m excited to see! Now, the book focus on Cali, a vocally talented young woman of God with as many jobs as she needs to survive in her own in a (fairly)new town and Holt a outlaw bad boy who’s supposed to be passing through town but gets caught up in life and then love in this southern town! This book was the epitome of an adult Christian romance and I’m here for that! I thoroughly enjoyed the seeing an authentic ‘come to Jesus’ moment for holt after several failed advances toward cali which weren’t accepted because we meet her already in a relationship. Holt doesn’t find God to get the girl but to truly find peace in a heavenly redeemer and those scenes with him praying and speaking with the pastor really stuck with me. But my favorite scene had to be the big gift towards the end of the book! Virtually all of Calis friends were male ( which got confusing at times but nonetheless I liked their protectiveness.’Southern Charm’ definitely left me wanting more from the other guys so I can’t wait to see where the author goes next!
This was an action pack Thriller Christian Romance. Enjoyed it, because it kept me wanting to know what happens next. Cali the main Character has alot on her plate, she has multiple jobs, no real career. She is just surviving. She is also protected by several male friends in the town, whom she works with as well. She's Bern in relationships with a couple of those men and it just that she is not where she wants to be or in the relationship that she feels valued. That is other than her relationship with God. A stranger comes into town, his motorcycle breaks down and he needs a mechanic. This puts him staying in a small town he isn't too keen with at first. Holt is a bad boy by trade and a drifter who is running away from some bad people. He takes a liking to Cali and does all sorts of things to catch her attention. He has plans to have his way with her before he moves on. Cali is not the type, and he quickly realizes that. He ends up staying at a Preacher's place and works on Church grounds to get money to fix his bike and get closer to Cali. Things get hairy after awhile, and more trouble comes to town. Cali and Holt are both in danger. Faith, love and friends are the saving grace. Best book ever this year. An ARC from Author. Thanks for this awesome story. This will be a series.
Need a story that will not only challenge your ideas of what a love story should like but also show you what real forgiveness looks like? Then you need to get a copy of this beautiful story ASAP. It’s not a sweet romance with a couple that falls in love over coffee, dinner and fun moments. It’s a love story that’s hard fought for, with brokenness, forgiveness and an ending that will leave you with the biggest smile on your face. I loved getting to know Holt and Cali, as well as the rest of their friends. They become a family by choice rather than blood and their care of each other was so good to see. Cali learns to let others help and that it’s okay to let real love in when it’s honest and true. Holt finds forgiveness he didn’t know he needed and a place to belong, with love he never thought he deserved. And the Faith that each of them embraces shows what a relationship can be if it’s rooted in the Lord. I would spoil the best parts of the story if I tell any more but I highly recommend this story for those who enjoy books with grit and depth. I can hardly wait to see which of the characters’ stories will be next in the series.
I received a copy of this story from the author via BookFunnel. I am not required by anyone to write a positive review and the opinions expressed herein are entirely my own.
I want to start by saying I received an ARC of this book. This is a Christian romantic suspense book. The main characters are Holt and Cali. Holt is a con man on the run while Cali is a woman who works a lot in a small southern town. When Holt’s motorcycle breaks down he ends up meeting Cali. They both are attracted to each other but Cali is not the kind of girl Holt expects. Cali is a Christian girl and Holt isn’t a Christian. When Cali helps Holt get a job at the church will Holt change his ways? Will Holt come to accept God into his life? The more time Holt and Cali spend together the more they fall for each other. Unfortunately, Holt’s past catches up to him. Will Holt go back on the run or will he face the people he ran from? Will he be able to keep Cali safe? Will they get the future together that they want? I loved watching Holt grow in this book. At the beginning he isn’t a Christian so he has some thoughts about Cali that weren’t great. It is great to see what God can do in someone’s life. How He can bring them from their lowest if they just ask him. Give it all to God. I think Cali was great for Holt. She struggled with what to do about her feelings for Holt as she is a Christian and he isn’t. It goes to show that just because we are Christian doesn’t mean we can’t be tempted. The side characters were great. The suspense and romance were great. There are some trigger warnings but you will see those in the front of the book before you even start reading. To me this book goes to show how we can struggle with worldly things in life especially when we are attracted to someone who isn’t a Christian like us. Overall, this was a great book.
This was an amazing read! I enjoyed every moment of this love story. Holt is a charmer who rolls into town with the worst of intentions. This town is determined to give Holt every opportunity and he puts in the hard work to grow into an amazing man. Cali is a hardworking woman who is tired of being alone while surrounded by people. She craves her happily ever after and is not willing to sacrifice her beliefs to get it. She shows a great trust in Gods plan. Pastor Brand is the kind of pastor we all hope to meet. He is willing to open doors and accept everyone where they are at. Havoc is the best big brother/best friend anyone could hope for. He genuinely wants Cali to have a great life and love. Boon, Ricky, Hitch, and Havoc make me want to move to Deadgrove. I can not wait for the rest of this series to learn more about this wonderful group of friends. There was enough grit to make everything feel more intense and natural. This isn’t your picture perfect love story. I am honored to have been chosen as an ARC reader. I will be reading all of C.C. Uriel’s books next!
Fall festivals? Motorcycles? Books? Horses? The smell of freshly baked cookies wafting through the house? And more?
Sign me up!!
Southern Charm is such a refreshing read. The characters were pretty relatable (which is hard to find nowadays) and I was immersed in the setting immediately. Havoc, although not the main character, was my favorite. I love his protective personality and I bet the next book in the series is about him. Or Boon (also a wonderful character and I can't wait to see what happens with his little family 🥰).
I LOVED the barn scene (iykyk😉💕) and I cried at parts of the book that really showed God's love for the characters. I'm going through some things personally that have been weighing down a bit and Southern Charm brings to light in a wonderful way how God can work through ANY situation.
Finishing the book was agony--because the next one isn't out yet!!!! I'm so excited to see what's next for the townspeople of Deadgrove!
If you love seasonal romance, a touch of dark romcom, and God, you will love Southern Charm💕
If you are looking for a book that is packed full of drama, suspense and faith based content interwoven throughout the story then look no further! You will fall in love with not only the main characters but the side characters as well. This is a story that shows you that we all have made poor choices and we are redeemable and that none of us are perfect. There are trigger warnings as this book does deal with the MMC transitioning from an unbeliever to a believer so you will get to see some of his ugly truths that deal with things that you may want to be aware of beforehand but it’s so good to see the character development & growth with him as it unfolds. The FMC also has a lot of character growth as far as learning to trust and adjust to changes in her life. This story also does take place in the fall so it’s a great read if you’re looking for a seasonal type book, just know it does have Halloween content and if you’re not in to that and want to avoid them just be aware. Fall is my favorite season and I found this book to be a heartwarming redeeming story.
When I started reading this book, I was very excited because it’s the start of a series and I love when I can find a faith based romance series that isn’t cheesy. I have been trying to find romance reads without the explicit content that captivate the reader and pull them in, and this one fit the bill! I immediately thought I was not going to like one of the main characters due to his attitude at the beginning of the book. Holt came off as a man who would do whatever he wanted to get just that one thing that was on his mind. Despite this I kept reading and was genuinely surprised by Holt’s character development! While Cali (the main character) did a lot of growing of her own it was Holt who made a huge impression on me! The moment of his change and the timing of it had me all in my feelings in the best way! This book was such a quick read for me, not because it was short, but because I could not put it down! I cannot wait to see what couple the next book focuses on and read more from this author!
I really enjoyed this gritty Christian romance. While it’s clean, it doesn’t sugarcoat things. It’s real and raw. Emotional and full of heart. It had a bit of a slow start, but things picked up quickly, and I was hooked.
Cali was a great character. Easy to like and root for. Holt was a complicated guy. He reminded me a bit of Sawyer from Lost. He was a con man. Handsome, charismatic, and dangerous. He was not a Christian when we first met him, but his journey to Christ was a powerful one. Watching him come to the Lord was my favorite part of this story. It was truly inspiring.
I loved this town and all the fall vibes. I loved the friend group and am so excited to read their stories in the future. If you enjoy gritty Christian romance, grab a copy of this book. You’ll love it!
I received a copy of this book and voluntarily reviewed it. All thoughts and comments are my honest opinion.
What a unique story in the Christian fiction genre! This is a very edgy story with lots of grit and suspense along the road to redemption. If you are a Drew Taylor or Tawni Suchy fan, then you will love CC Urie, and this new release.
I particularly liked Holt's character. He's raw and real, struggling with his identity and finding it in all the wrong places. He has an intense attraction to Cali, who is in a relationship at the beginning, and the romance has a very messy beginning. But as Holt grows, his sweetness shines, and he is that protective MMC we love is on full display. His support of the hardworking Cali is the best, and the support system they build alongside their little village is so sweet and fun.
This was a great first CC Urie story for me!
I received a copy of this story from the author. All thoughts contained here are my own.
The book has content warnings and you should read them!
Cali and Holt didn't start how you'd expect. She was seeing someone else, he just caught her from falling in the restaurant she worked at. This book was REAL, there were hard themes that happened. It wasn't a light, fluffy, easy read, but it was SO good. There is an aspect of found family that permeates the whole book, one of my favorite tropes. The way the found family worked through the book was really the whole community, they all found each other and CHOSE each other. This book was swoony and the build up to their first kiss was long, but 100% worth it. It also has ALL the fall vibes. Having read the content warnings this isn't a book I'd normally choose, but knowing it was coming from a Christian perspective I decided to give it a chance and I am SO glad I did. I really loved it.
Overall I really loved this book and would read more by this author! It was my first by her and it was an easy, fun and quick read & there were multiple great moments I didn’t see coming. I loved the love story and that salvation played a big part of it. It was really sweet at times and was def giving “small town romance.”
My only issues were 1- this was marketed as a Halloween Christian romance and it didn’t mention Halloween until the very end and it wasn’t a large part of the book, and 2- the damsel in distress vibes were a little over the top (the FMC was a little overly helpless imo.)
but overall a great Christian romance and I would definitely recommend it to a friend for a fun, light read that keeps you wanting more!
This was such a wholesome read! I loved the small town vibe and how protective everyone was of each other. I absolutely loved Holt! He’s a true testament of what God can do in our lives and watching his character transform really tugged on my heart in the best way. The entire book had me in all my feelings! Cali’s stubbornness was frustrating (but I can definitely relate) and Holt’s persistence and banter was enjoyable. The ending had me on edge and I felt like I also was having my faith tested. Overall, highly recommend this book if you love small town romances. I can’t wait to read the other books in this series!
A great Autumn read! More gritty, honest and deep than it appears.
I received an ARC of this book.
A con man is on the run after being found in a compromising position with his boss’s wife. He winds up laying low in a small town while he works to get his bike fixed. While there, he runs into hardworking Cali - a woman too busy and too good for him. But he has a way of changing minds, and he always gets what he wants. Little does he know, God has other plans.
This book reminded me of Beauty & the Beast and A Walk to Remember mixed with a little leather, rain and pumpkin spice. Though some areas were a bit predictable, the narrative and descriptions were fantastic.
I thoroughly enjoyed this one and look forward to reading more from this author.
This was my second time reading this book. It was as great as my first read through! I love Cali and Hitch and their story. This book is packed full of so many life experiences. I love how the author takes you on a journey for Holt to know what is truly important in life. He learns to go from a superficial life filled with giving into desire to a life that holds so much more. Cali has had heartache in her life but holds true to her beliefs and never gives up on God and choosing what is right.
This book has a few intense scenes, the author gives full disclosure in the beginning with trigger warnings.
This book was such a great mix of Christian romance and suspense! I couldn't put this book down, I had to keep reading to see what happened next.
The character development was amazing! I especially loved watching Holt grow from the beginning to the end,. I loved seeing him become a man after God and seeing the changes he made.
If you are looking for a Christian romance with a little suspense you should definitely pick up this book.
I received an advance digital copy of this novel from the author. All thoughts and opinions are entirely my own. Thank you C. C. Urie for giving me the opportunity to be an ARC reader. This book lived up to my expectations.
Perfect for fans of the book Love’s Lost Star, Southern Charm is the perfect blend of the Hallmark Channel, danger/suspense, faith, and redemption.
The author includes content warnings that readers should read to decide if the book is for them. One warning notes the innuendos and crass behavior of the MMC…but when that first wave of shame washes over him and he has to make some hard choices?? Yes!! So good!
I look forward to more books in this series and reading more by this author!
