Realistically this is a three-star manga, but it gets an extra boost because of Maron and Miyako's relationship. So much shojo manga is claustrophobically centered on romantic relationships, and it was nice to see two girls who are friends, and who are both bristly and devoted to each other.

Not to worry, teen love, and love triangles, also come into play, but since they share time with a "magical girl" adventure, they aren't overwhelming. The adventure doesn't make a whole lot of sense, and has some mildly cringe-worthy Christianity-derived iconography. (i.e. a big ol' blingy cross that beeps out an alarm for Maron when there's a demon around.)

The art is beautiful, if somewhat on the fussy side, with all kinds of frills and ribbons and cute fashion and mountains of screen tone, and with chibi-blobs frequently elbowing in for a "comedic" change of pace. Pure '90s!

3.5 again. We’re not straying far from the path of previous volumes but we do get some decent pathos amongst the magical girl stuff.

I like how Tanemura brings Maron and Miyako’s relationship into sharp focus towards the end of this book - Miyako can be a lot during some of this volume (and the previous), but it turns out there’s justification for this and it doesn’t change how much she cares about Maron (and vice-versa) in the slightest. There are a couple of great heart-to-hearts between the two here.

Maron finally allows herself to be weak and while I’m not sure that leaning on a boy is a great message of female empowerment she does try and shoulder more than she should in life and it’s not wrong that she could rely on her friends more than she does. They take advantage of this weakness to mix up the painting thefts in this volume to great effect - her eventual re-entry is well-deserving of the full page spread it gets.

There’s more internal dialogue for Chiaki than we got last time too and that helps give him a little more nuance, though I still think he remains teenage boy annoying (my tolerance for smarm is low). That being said, the way Maron lures him back to his apartment and the resultant scene there is, for lack of a better term, adorable.

Consistent art, some better explanation of character motivations, and funnier jokes (Maron’s backup Jeanne costume is something else) make for a solid book. It’s got just enough angst and is still a fun read. It’s lacking that little extra something to push it to four stars, but I still think it’s worth my time.

3.5 stars. Still a very enjoyable time, and I’ve liked getting to see more of the characters and their relationships flourish. (Chiaki does do and say things that make me 🤨😒 though)

"I still may hesitate or come to a standstill at times but I don't want that to stop me from pursuing what I want. I know every moment that passes is important. I don't want regrets."

I'm unsure if I can fully get all my thoughts out because I was so touched and impressed with this second volume! The way BOTH our leads admit their fears and worries not only to one another (well, at least for Maron), but also their self was so powerful! I was deeply inspired by Maron being open about her struggles and that her vulnerability wasn't seen as a weakness after all, but became be her strength and made her days happier. As someone who has struggled with vulnerability being a "strength," I never wished more in that moment that I could have read this as a teen and maybe have a breakthrough much earlier in my life. She is truly an admirable character!

I also loved how Chiaki was genuinely honest with himself about why he wasn't REALLY pursuing Maron and kept covering up his feelings. It was a huge moment for him and I found I loved his character even more than I did before!

However, the second best part of this volume is seeing how much Miyako cares for Maron and their overall friendship. Both of them like the same guy, but yet neither one of them lets that crush or their feelings affect their friendship in a negative way where it would lead to them no longer being friends. That bonus chapter was especially insightful and made me excited that friendship continues to be an important theme in this series.

I'm continuing to love this series deeply and very much hope that it doesn't change at any point (except that I love it more)! I'm eagerly looking forward to reading more!

This volume was so adorable!

It made me tear up 🥹Miyako is such a good friend and i love the way Chiaki is making amends with how badly he hurt Maron. You also understand the reason behind his actions and how deeply afraid he is of falling in love. But its way to late now…

As someone who grew up on Cardcaptor Sakura, Sailor Moon, Tokyo Mew Mew and Magic Knight Rayearth 90s magical girl series speak to me on a whole other level. I wouldn't for a second say that Phantom Thief Jeanne holds up to those bastions of maho shojo culture but it hits all the sweet spots for me as well as managing to be subversive in a few other aspects.

I do have to start off with a disclaimer however that this has some pretty heavy religious tones, absolutely not true to source and gets pretty buckwild, so I think this has the effect of probably putting off people that aren't religious and aren't interested in angels and fighting for God. But also turning away people that are as the religious themes are...pretty wild. I think that not being reglious myself did help me to enjoy it a little more to be honest.

The other disclaimer is that this is absolutely a product of its time and so has messy ideas about women and is pretty sexist in some areas. The main character is strong and tough and doesn't need anyone until she starts to struggle and then can't do anything without the male lead who is constantly rescuing her. This isn't particularly uncommon in shojo manga but the extent to which it is portrayed in this series gets pretty tiring.

That said, the art style is gorgeous. All the hallmarks of 90s shojo with adorable clothes, flowing hair and giant eyes. The idea of angels and reincarnation is an interesting slant for a magical girl series and, while as I mentioned it gets pretty wild, has its moments. This is definitely more pushed towards romance than anything else, while romance is often a big trope in magical girl series, it seems to be the predominant focus of Jeanne, even pushing aside Maron (the lead characters) job as phantom thief, I found that grating at times.

I think over all this is great for a nostalgia trip but alot of tropes are out dated, and in some places outright damaging (there's an absolutely wild idea behind using gods power and its ties to your virginity which...yeah.) but if you're able to overlook these things and suspend your disbelief for what is a pretty short series you might find enough in it to enjoy. I can absolutely see alot of people being turned off by this series though.

Really loved that this manga is bringing up heavy topics such as divorce and grief. For a semi-romance manga, I think the approach to love is very mature with a lot of real life situations brought up such as having a hard time trusting and loving after childhood trauma. Really happy with the indepth characters and emotional development of the main characters. Would very much recommend!

There's some great development here. Marin continues to put up a strong front but is showing clear weaknesses, her budding relationship with Chiaki has some ups and downs, and heck even her relationships with the rest of the supporting cast are showing increasing depth. I really liked this one, I'm getting invested.

This series is absurd and melodramatic in the way all Arina Tanemura series are, but it's also pretty entertaining and the art is pretty - so I still like it quite a bit! It feels at times like something heavily influenced by Sailor Moon but with more gag humor.

The story still doesn't stand out to me. It's still typical magical girl manga.
The Phantom Thief outfits are absolutely beautiful regardless.

A decent balance of action and romance. Not especially memorable, but the art holds up well, and there's a lot of emotions crammed into the main character.

I seethe with outrage that the original translation from the 90s wasn't localized, but this reprint is. The genuine horror.

The stories are hard to follow and seem to skip steps. Despite this, the story is beginning to grow on me. I like the characters.

~4/5

[Read more at my blog, Geeky Reading!]

I am really enjoying getting to re-read this series. The color pages have not been as impressive as I was hoping, and I do miss Tanemura’s author comments, but I’m still liking this translation, and the books are still really pretty. It’s been so long since I first read this series, and it really is my favorite Tanemura series.

In this volume, there are some phantom thief cases, including Chiaki’s father, who is really kind of humorous (when not possessed), and Miyako’s brother. The humor doesn’t interrupt the serious moments, which is really nice, although it really does make the fight scenes rather cheesy, but for me that works for this series. It makes the cases less serious, although a bit more dramatic.

There are several moments between Chiaki and Maron in this volume, including one where they’re at the carousal (which was a memorable scene from my first read), and another really nice one when they’re both captured. They’re possibly my favorite Tanemura couple, so I just really enjoy reading these moments again, and falling for them all over again.

There are a few hints about something deeper going on with the phantom thief thing, and I’m looking forward to that revelation. Then there are some mentions of Maron’s parents—some good things, as well as her hurt feelings over them. And given how hurt she is over them, it really shows how strong she is, how hard she tries to put on a happy face for everyone.

There’s a cliffhanger at the end of the volume (with something that I thought happened earlier in the series), and then a bonus story about why Miyako is so set on capturing Jeanne. The bonus story was nice, really showing how important Maron is to her.

The next volume is sure to be good, and I look forward to reading it.

Not being a big fan of romance, this volume really surprised me. Being the opposite of vol. 1 and going heavy on the romance and light on the plot, I ended up really, really enjoying myself with these characters. The first few chapters were a bit of a whirlwind but soon I settled into the characters and enjoyed the humour. One thing I like is that these two know they like each other and Chiaki is all over Maron by the middle of the volume so this isn't going to be one of those long drawn out secret crushes. We get to know both of them quite well and their backgrounds with their parents creating fairly deep characters. While the relationship is progressing there are still plenty of people to save from the demons and I'm enjoying those encounters. There is also an interesting sup-plot between Maron and her best friend. The best friend has a crush on Chiaki as well and is also hunting down and trying to capture the thief Jeanne, not knowing it is Maron. The art is very pretty and satisfying! I love the cover of this book so much. For a highly romantic, relationship shoujo I'm pleasantly surprised with how satisfied I felt upon finishing this volume and loved the little shock ending! I will certainly be continuing on to volume three!

To be honest, I finished this book days ago. My life has been so hectic with moving, cleaning, getting my car fixed, work, and other such riff raff that I honestly don't remember much about this volume. So this review is going to be pretty pointless.

Much like last time, the similarities between this and Sailor Moon are really bothering me and pushing off this series. Now even Jeanne transformed on her own using unleashed/untapped hidden power. She's more and more like Sailor Moon. But at the same time, while I'm annoyed by the Sailor Moon rip off, I'm enjoying the story. I'm torn.

I really do love Miyako though! Truly!

Still as good as the day I started it...what feels like a long time ago. Am excited to get the next book, but am even more excited that I accidentally stumbled onto this NEW manga series. Next one won't be out until July, and the one after that will be released in September. What an exciting wait! Highly suggested for shojo fans!

This continues to feel like the same characters and same plot from the author's other works. But her drawing style is just so dang cute I'm willing to read it.
