Island Tales #1

Waiting for a Prince

Rate this book
What happens when the man of your dreams makes your heart race… but loving him might break you?

Mark knew from the first moment that Sam could be everything. Beautiful, mysterious, aching for connection—Sam is the kind of man who could ruin Mark for anyone else. But Sam doesn’t need romance. He needs a friend, someone steady enough to stand beside him.
Mark can do that. At least, that’s what he tells himself. Until one touch, one look too long, and he realizes he’s already fallen.
Hopelessly, helplessly, completely.

Sam’s life is a maze of secrets and tangled loyalties. Love? That’s a fantasy for other people, not for someone like him. But then Mark walks in. Warm, loyal, unshakably kind—and everything Sam never dared to want.
If this were a fairy tale, Mark would sweep Sam away and promise him forever. But fairy tales don’t come true… do they?

Sometimes love isn’t about saving someone. Sometimes it’s about showing them they’re worth saving.

Two men. One impossible connection. And a love so powerful, it might just rewrite both their stories.

Warning – these pages show the aftermath of domestic violence, but not the act.

This book was sweet. I did like it. BUT(!!) one thing bothered me. Sam is a 23 year old virgin, he's never been with a man or a woman and blushes every time anything to do with sex is mentioned in conversation...yet he has a cock piercing??? What!? Since when do shy blushing virgins get their penises pierced? O.o It just didn't fit with Sam's character AT ALL imo. Though who knows, perhaps I'm mistaken an there are tons of pierced virgins running around.

Yet another KC Wells story I've read and loved, set on an island I know and have visited. 5 stars and from me!!

Mark is a trainee hairdresser on the Isle of Wight, and rather than leave the island and work on the mainland, is content to stay as once the tourists have gone and Cowes Regatta week with its yachts and boats has sailed off into the distance , everything calms down for it's inhabitants. There are not many gay guys on the island, and Mark is forced to visit the mainland every so often just to get his kicks, however, one day a regular customer turns up at the salon with a gorgeous guy in tow. This regular customer, Bitchy Becca we'll call her, is a complete bitch...rich, snobby, angry...just awful, and Mark feels really sorry for the guy that's with her, who is just the sort of guy that pushes all of Mark's buttons!!

We fast forward a little and discover that Mark frequently visits one of the the nudist beaches on the island, and surprise, surprise who should be there on this particular day, but Sam, the guy from the hair salon. Mark ignores him (hello, straight and therefore not available for Mark) and continues his nude sunbathing...he falls asleep and is woken by Sam, who plonks himself down next to Mark after being told to take his clothes off...nudist beach...and they start chatting. They discover that they have lots in common including having gone to the same school, although Sam was 3 years ahead of Mark, and a real friendship begins....something that Mark doesn't currently have. He suspects that Sam is having problems with Becca, but Sam will never criticise her in front of him so Mark has to be patient, but hey, as they're having a great time spending evenings and some parts of the weekend together (as friends) Mark doesn't feel he can say too much, and of course the worst thing happens, he falls in love with Sam .

I'll leave the story here...do I get my Happy Ending and a good slap for the Bitch from Hell??? Well, I'll leave you to find out, I really enjoyed it.

The latest book from KC Wells, an author I'm liking very much at the moment and in my opinion another winner. I love how she makes reading one of her books such an easy, enjoyable experience.

Set on the Isle Of Wight, its a lovely friends to lovers story that once again had me smiling contentedly all the way through. I thought it endearing, enchanting and as usual very romantic. Some conflict, mainly from a very bitchy girlfriend, that touches on a subject not always talked or written about and then of course there's the unrequited love that Mark feels for the gorgeous Sam from the moment he sets eyes on him in the salon with his crappy rich girlfriend ...who's downfall couldn't come too quickly! However it never feels too angsty. Somehow KC always seems to get the balance just right.

This was a tad different because it takes a bit longer to get to her trademark hot love scenes but I think it was a lovely build up and it made them all the better for the wait. The growing friendship before the inevitable happens was the best part of the story for me. Mark and Sam are two absolute sweethearts and I was rooting for them hard. Can't fault it so its another well deserved 5, I Loved it.. Another firm favourite... bring on book 2.

I enjoyed the writing style quite a bit and while Mark and Sam were interesting I was really frustrated how Sam dealt with his feelings for Mark. The evil girlfriend was way over the top for me to the point she made the story feel not real. The best part of this was the friendship between the two men and the slow build of their relationship, if Becky, the GF, hadn't been here my rating would have jumped. As it was though, she seemed more of plot device since she only appeared at certain points to move the story forward and was never seen again until she showed up again being horrible. A sweet love story in some places but not something that I can recommend unless you're willing to overlook a hardcore evil girlfriend trope.

This is a lovely story. It is emotional and touches on some serious issues but also with some fabulous sex scenes between the wonderful leading men! There were a couple of elements to this story that made this book stand out from other friends-to-lovers stories.

Mark is a trainee hairdresser and not totally satisfied with his life. He lives in a small town without much chance of meeting his 'Mr. Right' and so far has only experienced casual hook ups when he travels to seek these out. When he sees Sam, who is accompanying his girlfriend to a salon appointment, he feels immediate attraction. When they later meet by chance at the beach, the two men start up a friendship.

What I loved was the way Mark's attraction was handled and how he responded to Sam. Yes, he thought Sam was gorgeous but it was actually Sam's personality that was most attractive to Mark. "He liked Sam. During their time together, he'd come to see him less as on object of lust and more as a warm, personable young man who was easy to get along with." Mark wasn't portrayed as a shallow man, just after sex. Rather he had strong morals which he would not sacrifice just for a quickie even when the opportunity was presented to him.

Mark struggles with his attraction to Sam, knowing they can't be more than friends. But Sam has his own secrets and there is a lot more behind his relationship with his girlfriend than meets the eye. At first I was wary of the typical bitch girlfriend but this story isn't quite what you expect.

Oh, and one thing I did question was Sam's tattoo placement, nipple piercings and Prince Albert. For some reason they seemed unexpected for someone so sexually inexperienced as he was and they immediately screamed gay to me . Guess I am just stereo-typing! :)

I now publish all my m/m reviews on my blog so if you want to see all my m/m reviews in one place come visit at Because Two Men Are Better Than One!

4.5 stars. Another fantastic read by K.C. Wells who has fast become a favorite of mine.

Trainee hairdresser Mark is having a bad day at work when he sees his fantasy come true sitting on the couch at the salon. Sam ticks off all his boxes, other than the fact that he is there waiting for his horrible girlfriend Rebecca to finish having her hair done. After Rebecca not Becky has a hissy fit and berates Sam in front of the entire salon Sam leaves, but Mark can't stop thinking about him.

During a chance meeting between Mark and Sam at the beach, they discover they have a lot in common, including a shared past. Mark realizes that while Sam may not be suited to be a boyfriend, he may have just found a new best friend. As they become closer, it becomes clear that Rebecca is a sore subject, so Mark tries not to pry, although he has some concerns based upon growing up in a household where his mother was abusive towards his father.

One night out drinking and talking Sam becomes aware that he is Mark's walking, talking dream man. It doesn't sit well with Sam who storms off, leaving Mark devastated at the loss of his friendship, but, the real reason behind Sam's departure will change things between them for good.

This was different from the author's previous books in that there was a nice, slow build between the two men, who have nothing more than a friendship for the majority of the story. What was not different was the way she again handles difficult subjects such as abuse and homophobia with such emotion and understanding.

I love the way KC Wells allows her mind to work. She doesn't take the same route each time. In this case, she delves into something that few men are willing to talk about. Spousal abuse. It's not an easy subject and she doesn't get all heavy and angsty with it, but she does talk about it and I find it very admirable.

Wow! This was adorable! I've never actually read anything by K.C. Wells before (I know, I know, I can't believe it either!), so I thought I'd start with this one since I'd heard about it on Facebook and absolutely loved that gorgeous cover. I've been rather unlucky with books these past few weeks; I've found all the books I've picked up to be hard work and have really struggled to connect with any of the characters. I didn't have any of those problems with Waiting for a Prince. I was hooked from the very first page and I fell in love with Mark and Sam from the beginning.

First off, I have to say that I usually stay away from M/M romance stories where one or both of the main characters have a girlfriend to start with. I'm not sure why I do, it just seems to put me off. I'm so glad I didn't let that put me off here! I'm also really glad that Sam didn't cheat on Becky - Sam and Mark both had strong morals and knew that, if they were ever going to be together, it couldn't be while Sam was still dating Becky. I know they kissed, but they didn't take it any further than that, and I was insanely grateful. Cheating is one of the things I find very hard to forgive when I'm reading romance novels. Becky was a complete and utter bitch, but even then, it's something that would have annoyed me.

So, the relationship. Am I allowed to fangirl and squeal like a loon?! Mark and Sam were absolutely perfect together! The second their eyes met and I was like "yep, that's it, these guys are totally meant for each other!" I love how they became best friends first and that we got to see the progression of their friendship before they took things further. Friends to lovers is always such a joy to read when it's done right. I fell in love with Sam and Mark, but Sam was definitely the one I felt I connected with the most. I adored him; he was such a gentle and loving guy. Mark was lovely too, but in a different way. He was definitely the more confident and self-assured of the two.

This story was very sweet but it was also much more emotional and touching than I had expected. I had been looking for a nice easy read to put a smile on my face and that's mostly what I got. But I also got a lot more than that. God, it broke my heart in places! When Sam cried, I cried. Jeez, I just wanted to hug him forever and keep him safe! Without saying too much, I really wanted to punch Becky in the face. What an absolute cow! Eurgh. But I love how comfortable Mark and Sam were with each other, and how they were able to turn to each other for support. Sam was hurting but so was Mark, and the scene where they comforted each other was very touching.

I also loved the setting - the Isle of Wight! *swoon* I'm British, and the Isle of Wight was a popular holiday destination for my family when I was a kid. It brought back some childhood holiday memories!

I'd totally recommend this to anyone who likes sweet friends-to-lovers themed romance, and who doesn't shy away from a bit of emotion too. I'm definitely going to be reading more of K.C. Wells' work, although I'm not too sure where to start! Whatever I start with, I just hope I enjoy it as much as this one :)

Oh wow! I never expected this one.

The way I read the blurb, I honestly thought this was another case of closeted-man or even a gay-for-you plot. I liked how the blurb made this sound where Sam and Mark do not start off as sexual partners or something sleazier, instead we have two men who basically befriend each other and get to know one another intimately, sans sex. This was intriguing. I was not expecting a Men-Cry-Too plot.

The last time I read K.C. Wells, it was about a romantic BDSM story so I guess I was expecting the same thing here. Nope, not this one. This is a more sensitive issue, in my opinion, and was all the harder to read as it triggered memories of personal friends who went through the same abuse.
Domestic violence is something that should never be generalized as something happening between partners, spouses or boy/girl-friend relationships where the (stronger) man is always the abuser. Believe it or not, men can also be abused by their girl-friends or wives who may be tinier than they. And this is exactly what we are looking at here.

Sam is a gentle guy and even if he is older than Mark by three years, I find Mark as the stronger persona here. Mark has had life experiences that gave him the arsenal to help out his Sam while Sam was basically a pampered child who was drowning in a situation he had no idea how to handle.

These two VERY young men find their romance and because of their friendship and love for each other, turn to support one another in ways they never imagined. It is this strong relationship which I found appealing in this story. Yes, there are some erotic scenes here but again, Ms. Wells writes it gently and with finesse that I found intriguing and fresh all the same time.

I know this story deals with sensitive issues, and something very different from those I have read so far. Frankly, this is only the third time I have encountered this type of story, the last one being like, hmmm, 20 years ago? Regardless of the sensitive plot, I was so happy that Sam, at the very end, dealt with it and his abuser in the most amazing way: without violence.

Set on the Isle of Wight, this is a somewhat tension-filled romance with a distinctly British flavor. The balance between intense emotions, the mystery around what is going on with Sam, and the sweetness once Mark and Sam both admit what’s going on between them is well managed. The wonderful setting and great secondary characters (well, except for the two horrible villains), as well as the underlying theme of domestic abuse added to the emotional drama and made for a great read. It’s not at all like the K.C. Wells books I have read and loved before, but wonderful nonetheless.

Mark is not used to romance. He is so shy that he barely has a sex life, making do with quick encounters in bars and one-night stands. But he does want to find his Mr. Right, he just has no clue how to go about it. So when he meets Sam, he is not just unprepared for the fact that Sam is straight (he has a girlfriend, after all), but Mark isn’t ready for the sneaky way in which Sam gets under his skin to the point where Mark realizes he made a big mistake – he fell in love with his best friend, knowing the guy is straight. What a mess!

Sam is a great guy, but he has a few secrets. As he gets to know Mark, he finds it more and more difficult to stay away from him, and it’s soon far more than friendship he wants. But he also has a job at his powerful father’s company, and a girlfriend who is clearly out to control him. I knew this couldn’t end well and suspected what was going on, but it takes Mark a little longer to figure it out. When he does, and once Sam decides to stand up for himself, things get ugly for a while.

If you like your romances with a touch of mystery and some serious drama, if two men who have to learn to stand up for themselves sound interesting, and if you’re looking for a read that is as full of tension and mystery as is filled with sweetness, then you will probably like this novella.

Please leave comments to my 5 sweet pea, Recommended Book, review at http://mrsconditreadsbooks.com/index....

Kc Wells’s Waiting for a Prince begins with an ugly scene at a hair salon between a client and her male companion. Rebecca (or Bitchy Becky, as I came to call her) berates and belittles Sam to the point he leaves the salon with Rebecca’s screeching demands riding the air after him. It is obvious from Sam’s body language that he is taking a big risk by walking away from the confrontation.Mark is a trainee hairdresser at the salon. Observing the interchange between Rebecca and Sam unnerves Mark to the point his best friend and co-worker, Sonia, notices and asks him about it. Mark has painful memories of his mother treating his father just like that and it has stayed with Mark all his life.

The question is, why does big, handsome Sam put up with such demeaning treatment by a woman who supposedly is important to him? And why is she so hateful? As mentioned in the blurb, Sam has a secret and Rebecca’s taunting is a form of blackmail.

Mark and Sam meet up on the beach later and form a friendship that develops into something else. When Sam decides the way he has come to feel about himself isn’t worth putting up with Rebecca’s demands a wonderful plan is set in motion that has unexpected consequences.

The sex is hot, the plot is thick, and the characters are well developed people you come to care about. This first Island Tales story from Ms Wells is delightful to read and savor. I actually read it twice, which is unusual for me, but I enjoyed it that much and didn’t want to let Mark and Sam go so easily. Ms Wells has a command of the English language, whether you are talking about the British version or the American version, and it takes you to her island where you can hear the waves crashing, feel the sun on your face, and know you want to stay there for at least as long as the book lasts, if not longer. This is a charming book for a beach read or a cold winter’s night when you want to remember a summer love that deepens into something more lasting.

Part of the reasons I like reading m/m stories (beyond the usual suspects such as enjoying good stories, smuts, and enrichment of my soul... ) is that just from being together the main characters are defying social norm of conformity (I just never feel warm toward specific term such as hetero-normativity as it focuses too much on certain aspect of life).

Unfortunately, as time goes by, we build a new set of norms in our mind like: religious people are out to hurt gays (a common plot in m/m romance), gay sex culminates in anal penetration (also an accepted norm) and only women can be victims of domestic abuse (which is supported by statistics, but that's where "norms" usually come from). This book defies that. Together with the lack of miscommunication and TSTL actions by the MCs, this book is what I want from my m/m romance book.

Is there cheating involved since one of the characters has a girlfriend?

Verrrrry slow burn. I'm talking slug city, which was understandable given the circumstances. This is not to say that the story moved slowly; it didn't. I loved Mark and Sam. But I especially fell in love with the Isle of Wight and have firmly placed it on my bucket list of things to see before I kick the bucket.

Bottom line: a super slow burn that's worth it in the end.

This was a sweet quick read. I despised Becky and we could have done away with her character., or at the very least saw the consequences of her actions. I enjoyed watching Sam & Mark grow from friends to lovers. I think the I love yous came on a little quickly. I loved watching their “dates” as they grew to know each other. I also would have liked an epilogue showing where they are at further down the road. Maybe they will pop up in one of the next books in the series so I can see them with their HEA as you are left with a pretty strong HFN.

What an incredibly sweet romance! Written from Mark's point of view, he's such a nice guy but he's so lonely :( His friends have moved on, his family is not supportive, and his work environment is less than satisfying. Mostly though, he's dreaming of his perfect guy.

Well, said perfect guy shows up... unfortunately, he says he's straight.

Of course K.C. Wells delivers the perfect happily ever after, along with a poignant and hopeful message. Lovely.

Damn, this author managed to sucker me in for one type of story and then blindsided me.

I thought this was going to be a lighthearted cinderfella type with a little bit of "in the closet" drama thrown in. The opening scene in the salon didn't change my impression either. So I thought, I am going to sit back and enjoy.

I should have known better. This woman never fails to deliver an emotionally packed story. But she was so sneaky this time I wasn't looking for it.

She lured me in and before I knew it I am wanting to pat Mark on the back and tell him to hang in there....Then there was Sam......I wanted to walk into the book and snuggle him. I wanted to adopt this boy as a little brother and annihilate the people that mistreated him. Usually I fall in love with the characters and want them for my own. But seriously, Mark was so right for Sam that I will be happy as big sis.

K.C. Wells how the hell did you manage to address such a powerful subject in such a short book and do it justice?

I liked this, it was well written, I enjoyed the English-ness seeing as I am English and the plot was well-paced and smooth. I admit though at first I didn't realise quite how young the men are - 20 and 23 - and I expected a different secret, i.e. an actual secret! . Not completely sure whether to go ahead and buy the sequel September's Tide Island Tales 2 or leave it a bit. Doesn't seem to be a direct sequel so may save it and get it when I have extra cash!

This book is everything you expect to find in a K.C Wells book. It has real characters who have good relationships and believable drama. The secondary characters are brilliant, from the disaproving boss to the supportive mentor.

I LOVED Mark! He was sweet, kind and just really adorable. The hot parts of this book were just great too and add in the nude beach and i was a happy reader.

this is a spoiler

On a serious note, this book deals with the abuse of men by women, which is far more common than is reported to the police (at least in Australia). It was well addressed and I could feel Sam's emotion.

End of spoiler

As K.C knows I just love her work, I really don't think you can go past one of her books. They have all been amazing and this is no exception.

This was a nice and well written story.
The problem is, I didn't really like the characters all that much. Well, I didn't like Sam, Mark was perfectly fine. Sam was just... stumbling around too much. Looking desperately for his bearings and while that's fine in general, it can be exhausting for the reader to take part in it. And I got impatient pretty quickly, to be honest. I also was kind of thrown off by the difference in his appearance and his actual personality, almost like a little boy trying to look like a man.
And Becky was simply too evil for me to really see her as an actually fleshed-out person.

If you are more patient than me, you might enjoy this story quite a bit, though!

Domestic abuse, violence, coming out, fear, loss of family..... this novella has it all. It all so has friendship, warmth, caring, compassion, and love.

Mark and Sam are two young 20 somethings who desperately need each. One has very limited sexual experience and the other craves the intimacy, caring and relationship to go along with the sex. They start as friends and spend time together bowling, going to movies, the beach and talking. It isn't long before that friendship grows into love.

Where does the story go from here? Sam is straight(?) and Mark sees no future for them. KC Wells is a wordsmith who can weave a heck of a story. She does just this with Sam and Mark and their HEA.

What a truly fantastic book. I am always a fan of the longing for your best friend book and this one does not at all disappoint. I laughed and even shed a few tears reading this beautiful love story. There were bumpy roads for Sam but it's true what they say, Love really does conquer all. K.C. Wells really does a great job mixing the drama in with the fluff for a perfectly paced, well written story that had my heart fluttering. I never once lost interest and I couldn't put it down. Very enjoyable!
