This book was not bad at all but it had something I didn't like it so much.
First of all there was the ick feeling I got when I discovered both father and son were in love with twin sisters, slightly older than the son and 14 years younger than the dad. Twin sisters, it means that when the 2 couples will have a child those children will be at the same time counsins/uncle/nephew.... a bit strange :(

But the story was good and Leonie is a great woman even if at the beginning she seemed to be a bit strange, ready to give up her daughter like she wouldn't care, but when I discovered her past I better understood her reasons.

Besides this book is full of things, drugs, kidnap, domestic violence, blackmail, sometimes it was like those south-american telenovelas where something is always happening and I was almost expected that someone suddenly would stand up saying "I am your mother!" LOL

A light reading for a nice afternoon! :)

Whoa this book was much twistier than expected! Much longer and containing quite a few more plot threads than your usual Harlequin novel. Tragic past, stalkerific ex, kidnapped baby, secretly insane person, drug addict, it had a little of everything! A goulash of OTT drama ingredients, yet the overall impression was kinda bland and mild for all that. I still liked it but I wouldn't say it was mind-blowingly unforgettable.

You get more of the Hero's point-of-view than the heroine's, interestingly enough. The thunderclap realization of love strikes him pretty early, too, but don't worry there are plenty of momentous events that keep the crazy train chugging away. I have to say, while the ensuing disasters, revelations, and twists were entertaining enough, the romance was pretty unexciting after the initial tension of will-they-get-together was settled so early.

Spoilers ahead!

It seems i rather prefer to read Carole Mortimer`s books this week...
well she has until now NOT dissapointed me,this author is incredible..!

The original title to this is "Witchild",exactly how the hero sees the heroine as.

A Witchild that has enslaved him and made him fight for her through their journey from engagement to marriage.I really liked the supporting characters too.The hero`s son and the heroine`s twinsister.

I absolutely love this book!!!!!!!

The heroine met the hero when he thought she was her twin sister, Laura. The hero wanted to prevent Laura from marrying his younger son. When he found out they were twins and the heroine was the 'kooky' sister, he, for some unknown reason was obsessed with the thought of her. So later that night he went back and had a one night affair with her.

Fast forward a little over nine months and the hero comes back into the heroines life. Her sister is going to marry his son and when he sees and infant, he automatically assumes that the infant is his sons and Laura's. When in fact the infant is actually his and the heroines.

Once he learns the truth, he is determined to marry her. For her has decided he has loved her and always will love her. As the hero learns about the heroines past and who she is as a person, he decides to make a plan to have her. He wants marriage and his daughter Holly, wrapped in a neat package. What he doesn't suspect is blackmail, a kidnapping, a drug addict and a whole lot of in between!

Well I need to say for Carole Mortimer book, overall it wasn't that amazing. The characters were great and the storyline was alright but it felt like a really choppy story to me. I mean, yes the author does go back and shape up the story so we understand but that's what made it sloppy to me. It could of come out in the right order in which it happened but it didn't. I just found it bothered me to no end.

I enjoyed this re-read a couple of decades after reading it for the first time.,
This book took me back to the time when I started reading romances and began to understand how human relationships described in books were quite different from real life. A case in point, Hawk Sinclair, a hero who was flawed and quite miserable for most of the book, but, once he got over himself and decided to try to redeem himself became a memorable hero that I have looked for in romances I have read since. The heroine was self-sacrificing to the extreme, surely no woman exists who is such a paragon, but if Hawk loved her the way he did, I have to give it to her, for being so perfect for him. Overall, I loved this book, it could not have been more packed with plots layered over other plots, so many potential villains yet such obvious ones too. Of course the worst thing that can happen, did happen, with baby Holly being kidnapped by a mental case, perhaps the biggest reason why as a reader I will never read such a plot device in my books again. Not if I know that they are there. I loved CM's writing when I was younger, she was daring for me, would I read her books now? Probably not, but I would recommmend this read to anyone who likes to explore the world of romances as they used to be written not so very long ago.

2022 Re-read review Summer is over in the East Coast and the cold season is ahead aka I felt in the mood to re-read my past favorites and this book was one of them. This 2nd go-around I didn't feel as "excited" as my previous below - probably because I already knew most of it (although funnily enough I kind of forgot who the real "villain" was lol!) But what I mean to say is I didn't experience multitude of happy fluffy feelings in my belly. I mean don't get me wrong, it's still a good read and I'm still keeping this book (and possibly re-reading again sometime in the future) but I feel I get slightly more critical as I get older LOL. In this case I guess, I was a little annoyed I started thinking about it more that the H/h's "first time" was scratch head worthy to me. I'm not sure I liked that "in the present time" and then we go back in time to see what happened sort of deal. I guess it just felt their "first time" wasn't special enough - not sure. And yes, I guess it's slightly "ehhh" about father and son with twin sisters considering their age gaps now that I think about it. I usually like forbidden loves / taboo types but only if they really make it super special / worthy enough or the characters were such that I would shout "just let them be! love wins all!" - but this 2nd read go-around I didn't super duper spectacular about the taboo aspect of father/son - twin sisters scenario. This is a thicker book to read and I appreciate the twists and turns but maybe it's my age and mindset in the year 2022 so let's see what happens a few years from now if/when I re-read this book again. But for now, I've switched my 4 stars to 3/3.5 - still keeping this book in my Keeper List for now!

2008 Review: I was lured in by the back cover of a previous edition. This is a Harlequin Signature Edition which means this has a whopping 316 pages, twice than that of a Harlequin Presents (yay!) This book was also released under the title "WITCHCHILD". I actually read the Witchchild back cover version than the one I listed above. That back cover version was what made me buy the book, hahaha.

Actually, let me list "Witchchild" back cover version: 'I AM NOT PREPARED TO LET A LITTLE GOLD-DIGGER LIKE YOU ANYWHERE NEAR MY SON!'It was a case of mistaken identity, but Leonie Spencer wasn't about to clear the air immediately and make things easy for Henry Hawker Sinclair. After all, he had accused her of wanting to marry his nineteen-year-old son, Hal, for a share in the Sinclair millions! In fact, it was Leonie's twin sister who was head over heels in love with Hal, and to spare her unnecessary pain, Leonie was ready to go to any lengths to keep the young lovers together - even if it meant beguiling and bewitching the intimidating Hawk...

Yep, I was curious about the whole father loves heroine and father's son wanted the heroine's twin sister. Wow, all in the family, eh!! Anyhoo, I really liked the book. I only read this book once and sometimes I have a tendency to read so fast because I want to get to the happy ending/resolving situation that my eyes sometimes skip the words which then makes me have to re-read the whole book again. So my review is little sparse (and I read it a week ago) But needless to say this book when I read the book it was in one sitting and kept me engrossed from page 1 to page 16. I plan to re-read again very soon and this is definitely a keeper for me.

I liked all the characters in this book but it had too much going on. There was a wicked ex-husband, there was blackmail, a kidnapping, and a secondary character with a drug addiction. The h had six cats all named for flowers which was fun.
The relationships are all a little confusing and wierd. Leonie and Laura are identical twin sisters. Laura marries Hal and Leonie marries Hawk who is Hal's father. That makes Leonie a step mother-in-law to her twin sister.

Holy Twists and Turns, Batman! Prepare for one helluva ride.

I looked at the reviews before I decided to get this book. I didn’t read them well enough though. This book too me by surprise.

What seemed like a straightforward “secret baby” and “reunited couple” book, became a drama filled Spanish soap opera right before my eyes. And it was wonderful!

The h’s sister is in love with a man several years younger. His father is not pleased that his son wants to marry an older woman and storms her house to warn her off his son.

What he didn’t know was that the girlfriend has an identical twin who is as kooky as the day is long. So he goes off on his abusive rant thinking he’s gonna scare this tiny redheaded woman off, when towards the end he learns that he’s ranting to the sister Leonie, not the girlfriend, Laura.

Then the predictable happens and the H (the father) realizes he has the hits for the woman he kept describing as looking like a child. (That really disturbed me)

The spend a night together, he insults her in the morning. She ends up pregnant. He learns about it nine months later, when the baby is a few weeks old.

Then there’s the ex-husband, the best friend’s son and his drama, the best friend and his own drama. There is also a kidnapping, the crazy woman, and a rescue that almost went wrong.

There was so much to unpack from this one that I actually read it slowly. It is full of excitement and drama. I can strongly recommend that you read it. So much drama, but if so good!

This book reminds me of a quote by Coco Chanel…” Before you leave the house look in the mirror and remove one accessory.”

This story had lots of accessories. Every character had some sort of past/current trauma and or drama in their life.

Leonie, Heroine: lots and lots of trauma/drama in the past, and now

Laura, Twin sister: past trauma that wasn’t dealt with

Hawk, aka Hero: lost his first wife in a car accident caused by a drug addict and has current drama with his son, the heroine, and his best friend

Hal, Hero’s son: lost his mom, current drama involves his dad and his dad’s interference in his life

Jake, Hero’s best friend and PA, was a single dad and is having current drama with his grown son and the hero

Stephen…Jake’s son, current drama with his dad and his own underlying issues

June the housekeeper…past trauma

Sarah, the beautiful secretary, was married to a philandering husband and works for hero..past drama/future drama

Michael- ex husband to heroine, I’m not sure if he had past trauma, but he sure caused a lot of current trauma/drama

So with all these little “tragedies” the love story can get lost at times. With that being said, I woke up to a sink full of dishes that didn’t get washed last night because I became so engrossed with the book.

The book moves pretty quickly because there is lots of dialogue.

I like the younger heroine /older hero getting a 2nd chance at love. His first wife is discussed. She was a lovely woman. They were childhood sweethearts. They probably would still be married. However, he doesn’t hesitate in saying how his feelings for the heroine are nothing like he has ever felt before. Thank Goodness, because I don’t read these books for the heroine to come off as second best! He has had an active sex life over the years which stops after his one night with the h. He tried after their separation, with no success, because the h had bewitched him.

After the H’s asshat moves which essentially causes more damage to the heroine, he spends the majority of the book trying to get her back and fix all that is broken. He has his work cut out for him as she has closed off her damaged heart.

Bonus: She takes in stray cats and is up to 6(7 by epilogue time). They are all named after flowers. So, the hero scored major points with me on his acceptance of the clowder.

The epilogue is sweet. Everyone who deserves a happy ending got it!

This is 3-4 ⭐️ for me. I think I could have done without some of the “accessories” and made this a 190 page read instead of over 300 pages.

"Just One Night" is the story is the story of Leonie and Hawk.

The book begins with a humorous tiff between the hero and heroine. He's angry and confronts the heroine for dating his 19 year old son, only to realize she is the twin sister! He is enchanted by the humorous woman with six cats, and leaves with a different agenda.
Fast forward a few months, when the hero returns only to see the existence of a baby! The tone of the book suddenly takes a turn, and we delve into the heroine's traumatic past, and what led to the baby. Suddenly the hero wants to be a father, but heroine refuses to marry him. There are sweet moments of hero wooing the heroine, only for tonal shift- the heroine's ex returns to blackmail her, there is lots of OM drama, then the baby gets kidnapped, more mayhem ensues only for things to finally settle and reach HEA.

Gosh this was a roller coaster ride. The heroine was very volatile. She'd make a mistake, and then get angry when the hero pointed it out. The hero was tolerant lol.

This story was pretty good, Hawk Sinclair was rich handsome and sexy and he was angry. His nineteen year old son wanted to marry a woman older then him who was probably after his money! So Hawk confronts Leonie and accuses her and her twin of awful things and try’s to stop the marriage from happening. There are many twist and turns in this book that were very unexpected. This from me who reads 3-5 books per week is even a bigger shocker. I totally recommend this book, I read it in one day.

I might have liked this, but I just couldn't get past the incest vibe. One twin gets naked with a guy young enough to be her kid brother while the other does the same with a guy old enough to be her father, and the two men are father and son! Might as well have a family reunion orgy!

These people have serious issues that would put them in therapy for years today!

The "YECK!" factor was just too high!

Carole Mortimer wrote a great story with complex characters and a storyline that actually captures realistic life situations. Twists to the plot that were quite surprising!

Family dynamics

What a complex story. I was constantly stressed by all of the drama. The little hint of things to come, the developing love between two people, and the gutwrenching ending was worth the ride.

This book was re-issued under the ebook title ‘Witchchild’.

An incredibly entertaining re-read decades, later. Fans of Mills & Boon would appreciate revisiting a time of domineering H’s and simpering h’s. This specific h was not a push-over and I enjoyed her interaction with her menagerie of cats.

Hawk Sinclair, an overbearing flawed H meets Leonie the identical twin sister of the woman his son Hal, plans to marry. He confronts her with the sole intention of persuading her to end the relationship. After realising the mistaken identity he is still intent on his mission and is convinced that the sisters are mercenary. There was witty bantering especially the h alluding to his mid-life crisis (there is a fifteen year age gap between them).

Later that evening he departs only to return and seduces her...leaving her with a token of his appreciation. Nine months later he meets his daughter, Holly, whom everyone had mistakenly assumed was the daughter of Leonie’s
ex-husband (what a cad of the lowest form) since she was not romantically involved with anyone else at the time of her pregnancy.

The sisters were complex characters especially their perception of relationships with an unconventional upbringing, forced separation by tragedy and loss of each other.

⚠️There is the token unhinged personal assistant that convinces herself that Hawk is with Leonie only because of the baby, therefore she kidnaps the baby...so Hawk and herself can live HEA, leaving the baby neglected and uncared for in a hotel room whilst presenting a facade of normalcy during business hours and attempting to push Leonie at an incoming train.

⚠️The drug dependent son of Hawk’s closest friend.

⚠️The scheming ex-husband that extorts money from Leonie because they were technically married at the time of Holly’s conception. The same ex that exercised his conjugal rights whilst she was pregnant and married to him causing her to miscarry her then unborn baby.

I would recommend this genre for that generation that appreciates the simplicity of romance. Editing and proofreading were rarely an issue.

Book authors published by Mills & Boon-such as Anne Mather,
Penny Jordan, Carole Mortimer, Lynne Graham, Michelle Reid,
Helen Brooks, Susan Napier, Charlotte Lamb and others...established the standards for a different audience of readers (the ones that snuck romance books into our text books) during classes.
