'So I do what we always do. I smile. I play. I bleed prettily in public, and pretend it’s by choice.' (Ch 7)

Dark Urban Fantasy | Dystopian Society | Forbidden Love | Political Intrigue | Family Legacy | Blood Magic | Morally Grey | Betrayals and Secrets | Touch Her and ☠️

'Some cages aren’t built with bars. And some, once entered, don’t ever let you leave.' (Ch 24)

In a world of violence, seduction, and blood magic, Aria is like a trapped and caged prize. Her life virtually mapped out for her. Used for political gain and the power behind her legacy. She is strong, but also broken, which calls to the brokenness of another. Yet she finds herself at a crossroad time and again — a dark path with what she knows and craves and a path of what could have been.

'His love is a chain, his protection a cage, and what burns in my blood now won’t be contained.' (Ch 30)

And her sister, Luna, has her own set of trauma and selfish ideas. Found her kind of irksome like most jealous rival type antagonists who are borne from inattention and believe themselves undervalued and deserving of all.

'....what remains is red— blood and violence— and the eternal judgment of something within me that does not forgive, and will never forget.' (Ch 39)

The writing was eloquent and descriptive, giving a good sense of the atmophere and surroundings. The creatures were also kind of cool.

This story is filled with deep secrets, disfunctional family mechanics, manipulation, spiraling disenchantments, viciousness, and passion born of pain.

'But love isn’t enough anymore, not when survival demands surrender, and staying would turn us into weapons aimed at each other.' (Ch 29)

If you read it, were you Team Dom or Team Rowe? I was Team Rowe!

I struggled a little at first to pick up the magic system. But the power plays and blood magic, science and experimentation added layers to the story I wasn’t expecting. It kept it interesting.

The final line just ensured that I will be picking up book 2 as soon as it’s available because HOW DID YOU JUST END IT LIKE THAT?!?

This reminded me a bit of Crescent City at first and I was totally for it, which is also why I was able to stick with it through a lot of the confusing parts because I was confident that it would all suddenly make sense and I’d understand the world and the magic. While I did understand the world as the story went on, as well as, relationships between the characters, I feel like I still don’t really have a good grasp on what they actually do with their magic? Maybe it’s just me, but I still felt a bit lost with that. I did love how much science was involved in this (as a former biologist turned nurse) and I found that super unique. I also am so obsessed with the author’s writing; I highlighted so many beautiful descriptions and I felt like I could visualize everything so well.

Overall, I really enjoyed this book and will be continuing the series!

I don’t know how she does it - even the bloody, graphic and highly questionable scenes are made into a beautiful disaster that just keeps you turning the pages. I mean blood magic, hello?!

Thank you to the author Patricia Prior for the opportunity to ARC read this book!

I love it when you keep second guessing intent, events and statements made.
This is a dark urban fantasy that keeps you on the toes. The world building is greatly done where we get to follow the rich and fabulous without any moral - I was yearning for a dive to the less fortunate (for the reality check our FMC needed), and I was served and not disappointed!

I love-hate almost all characters except two (I love-love Rowe and Kane) - and I think it’s beautifully done and executed because I still want and need to know more about each and every character still!

Characters? Insidious.
Writing? Immaculate.
Plot? Intriguing.
World building? Immense.

If you like it dark, twisted, politically challenged and red flags - you need to read this book. The ending gave me goosebumps and I need book 2.

Tropes:
🖤 Dark fantasy
🖤 Survival over moral
🖤 Political power struggles
🖤 Dystopian class divide
🖤 Family legacy, bloodline expectations
🖤 A weaponized magic system
🖤 Morally very grey characters
🖤 Romantic subplots
🖤 Sacrifice for the greater good
🖤 Shifting alliances

4.5 ✨ but rounding up because i can 🤪. I loved this one, this book gave jurassic park vibes in the best way, with the technology and creatures. Also Rowe 🫶🏼 my one true love, I hope you make it out of this series alive or i will riot 😂 This might be so problematic to say but Luna and Alex’s story line is probably my favorite so far in this series. Aria was a great FMC and i’m excited to see more of what happens with her as we progress throughout the series…. because ifykyk 🙊, thank you for doing my
boy Dom dirty….. NOT haha, he’s not my first choice but he also did not deserve thatttt, also if you plan on reading this brace yourself for impact at the ending because man was it shocking!!

ARC Review – When Blood Runs Red by Patricia Prior
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️✨ (4.25)

This futuristic dystopian romantasy completely pulled me in. The magic system was breathtaking—so unique and intricate that it felt like discovering something entirely new.

What really stood out to me was how differently Aria and Luna handled their parents’ deaths. The divide created such a compelling tension between them and made their individual journeys feel raw, emotional, and incredibly real.

The romances were layered and complicated in the best way—full of tension, conflict, and moments that kept me guessing who to root for.

The only reason this didn’t hit a full 5⭐️ for me was the pacing. There were a few sections that felt slower, with heavier scientific explanations that, while necessary for the plot, sometimes made me lose interest.

That said, the ending??? Absolutely wild. I did not see it coming and I’m still thinking about it. 😱

Definitely check trigger warnings (They are located in the back of the book rather than the front)—there is graphic violence that I was NOT prepared for. It’s intense, but very well written.

Overall, I loved this story and I’m already counting down for book two!

ARC review! I did struggle a little in getting the hang of the magic system but once I got passed that the book gets really good. Everywhere there is a surprising twist or turn that I didn’t expect. Every time I thought I knew what happened next there was a new twist. The last few chapters shocked me! I cant wait for the next book to come out!

This book emotionally wrecked me — and I loved every second of it.

When Blood Runs Red completely consumed me from beginning to end. This was one of those stories that made me feel everything — rage, grief, hope, love — and at times made me want to throw my Kindle across the room, which is always the sign of a truly great book.

The writing was immersive and vivid, and the blood magic was one of the most unique magic systems I’ve read in a long time. It felt dangerous, layered, and full of potential, and I’m incredibly excited to learn more about it as the series continues. The world itself felt alive, filled with fascinating magical creatures and a constant undercurrent of tension and unease.

The villains were truly villains — the kind that make your blood boil and leave you desperate to see them fall.
What stood out most to me was how deeply the story explored heavier, more human themes beneath the fantasy. Grief, rage, obsession, corruption, and the way power can be used to exploit and control others were all woven into the narrative in a way that felt meaningful and relevant. It added emotional weight to every choice the characters made.

And that ending… I’m still not okay. It left me staring at a wall trying to process everything and immediately needing the next book.

This was an easy five-star read for me, and I already know this series is going to stay with me. I will be counting down the days until book two.

Thank you to Patricia Prior for trusting me with an ARC of this story. 🖤

“You ruin me, Aria, and I’d let you do it a thousand times over.” ♥️

I signed up to read and review this book on a whim and I am so glad I did! I knew from the first few chapters that this book would be a five star read for me! I was completely captivated by the lush world building, the complex characters and the unique plot! To say I am obsessed with this book would be an understatement.

This book truly has it all: dark, urban fantasy elements mixed with political intrigue in a dystopian setting, a forbidden love triangle, morally gray characters and a ton of secrets and betrayals. There is so much to unpack and my head was spinning all the way through to the end. I cannot put into words how amazing everything came together!

“I never wanted perfect. I only ever wanted you. Exactly as you are, whatever comes next.”

Now let’s talk about the romance. How am I supposed to choose between Dom and Rowe? Both guys have their flaws, but they’re also both unique in their own way! They also definitely both have their fair share of daddy issues and being pawns in the game of power. Without spoiling anything, I am on the edge of my seat dying to know where things are going to go with them, especially after the way things ended. Poor Aria is sure in for a wild ride and I just know she’s going to end up with a broken heart (more so than what she’s already gone through)!

Thank you so much to Torch Lit Ink for the advanced copy! When Blood Runs Red releases on March 22, and you do not want to miss it!

One of my Favourite Books this year

I wasn’t sure about this one at first. For the first chunk of the book I thought I had it figured out, and then somewhere around the 100 page mark something just clicked. Suddenly I got it, and I could see how clever it actually is.

The magic system is honestly one of my favourite parts. It feels fresh, almost like it’s doing two things at once, and paired with the dystopian setting it just works in a way you don’t see very often. It adds a layer that makes the whole world feel a bit sharper and more interesting.

The story is told in dual POV from sisters Aria and Luna, and their dynamic is one of the strongest parts of the book. They feel fully formed, complicated, and real. You also get a few extra perspectives towards the end, which I loved because it made everything hit harder and added more depth to what’s going on.

I really liked the relationships as well, especially with Rowe and Dom. They each bring something different to the story and to Aria, and it adds that extra bit of tension and intrigue without taking over.

The side characters are just as well done. I could picture all of them clearly, which always says a lot about the writing. The setting, this kind of city with layered power dynamics, mixed with that underlying mafia family vibe, gives the whole story a really compelling edge. There’s a constant sense that things aren’t quite what they seem.

There is a lot going on, but it never feels messy. The world building is balanced really well with the characters, so you feel grounded in the setting without being overwhelmed by it.

I genuinely loved this. It’s easily one of my favourite reads of the year so far, and I’m already annoyed I have to wait for the next book.

*ARC REVIEW*

First I want to say thank you to the author for allowing me to read and review an early copy of this book. I truly loved it. The magic system was unique and the world building was super good without taking over the entire plot. I appreciated how complex the characters were because it made such a raw love/hate relationship for me with them. I think the plot twists and the set up for a future series is really what sold me on this book because it just kept getting better. I recommend this book for sure!

ARC Review – Releases March 22

When Blood Runs Red completely pulled me into a fantasy world I hadn’t explored before, and I was hooked from start to finish.

Set in the dangerous and intoxicating world of Eclipsera, where blood is power and politics are just as deadly as magic, this story follows Aria Ellis as she searches for answers after the mysterious deaths of her parents. What begins as grief and curiosity quickly spirals into something much darker, filled with ancient blood magic, corruption, betrayal, and secrets that run far deeper than Aria could have imagined.

What really stood out to me was how carefully built and immersive the world is. The author clearly put incredible thought into the magic system, the politics of the founding families, and the layered mysteries surrounding Aria’s parents. I actually found myself reading this a little slower than I normally would, and not because it dragged, but because I wanted to fully absorb every detail of the world and understand everything unfolding around Aria.

The atmosphere is dark, seductive, and tense, with moments of danger and intrigue that kept me constantly wanting to know what would happen next. Every new revelation pulled me deeper into Eclipsera and its deadly power struggles.

Aria is a compelling protagonist: grieving, determined, and willing to push forward even when the truth might destroy everything she thought she knew. Watching her unravel the secrets around her was incredibly engaging.

By the time I reached the end, I was completely invested in this world and these characters, and now I’m already desperate for book two.

I’m so honored I had the chance to read this ARC, and I will absolutely be purchasing a physical copy for my shelf.

If you enjoy dark urban fantasy with rich worldbuilding, dangerous magic, political intrigue, and deadly romance, this is definitely one to watch for when it releases.

Thank you to the author for the ARC!

ARC review

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

When Blood Runs Red is a dark, glittering fantasy thriller that feels like magic, politics, and danger all poured into a crystal goblet and served with a sharp bite. I devoured this concept.

Eclipsera is a fascinating world where blood literally equals power, and that alone sets the stage for ruthless ambition and twisted politics. Aria’s journey from grieving daughter to reluctant truth-seeker is compelling and emotional, you can feel her heartbreak, confusion, and slow-burning determination to uncover what really happened to her parents. The mysterious journal, the elite Guardian Gala, and the lurking founding families all give this story a rich, almost old-world intrigue that I adore.

The genetically engineered monster attack is such a chilling turning point, pushing Aria into a world she can’t ignore anymore. I loved how her magic becomes corrupted there’s something so haunting about power that comes with a price, especially when blood and betrayal are woven into the same tapestry.

This book promises secrets, betrayal, morally gray choices, and a heroine who might have to become dangerous to survive. If you love dark fantasy with political intrigue, blood magic, and a strong female lead who’s done being in the dark, When Blood Runs Red is absolutely worth picking up.

Grim, glamorous, and deliciously ominous just the way a good fantasy should be. 🩸✨

A dark urban Fantasy with a dystopian twist and political intrigue. Not only that but it includes a love triangle and a villain who is you can actually hate. When the blood runs red quite literally gives you it all and more. Even though the complex magic system takes a while to grasp, its the romance that just sucks you in and leaves you wanting.

“𝔻𝕒𝕣𝕝𝕚𝕟𝕘,” 𝕙𝕖 𝕡𝕦𝕣𝕣𝕤, “𝕀’𝕧𝕖 𝕓𝕖𝕖𝕟 𝕓𝕦𝕣𝕟𝕚𝕟𝕘 𝕤𝕚𝕟𝕔𝕖 𝕥𝕙𝕖 𝕕𝕒𝕪 𝕀 𝕞𝕖𝕥 𝕪𝕠𝕦. 𝕎𝕙𝕒𝕥’𝕤 𝕒 𝕝𝕚𝕥𝕥𝕝𝕖 𝕞𝕠𝕣𝕖 𝕗𝕝𝕒𝕞𝕖 𝕓𝕖𝕥𝕨𝕖𝕖𝕟 𝕞𝕠𝕟𝕤𝕥𝕖𝕣𝕤?”

If you want a book that explores the more heavier side of emotions this book is it. It hit in just the right places, and gives you a little bit of spice (because who doesn't like even a tiny bit) The characters, you either love or hate, and I must say i think i hated a majority of them apart from Aria: my girl needs protecting from the cruelty of her world. One aspect I loved most about this book is the complex magic system, yes it did take me a while to grasp but once I did it really make the book more gripping and impossible to put down.

I'd like to thank Patricia Prior to gifting me this e-book ARC in return for my honest review ☺️

It’s been a while since a book has had such a profound effect on me, but damn this might just be it.

A refreshing mix of political power plays in force, mixed in with complex magical systems, providing those founding families with sheer dominance over Eclipsera.

Aria is a complex character. She’s been groomed her whole life to fulfil a role, longer perhaps than she’s ever realised. Her only way of rebelling comes in the form of her complex relationship with Dom.

Their interactions provided a whole kaleidoscope of emotions. Dom sure gives off the vibes of zero tolerance for anyone and anything. The way he interacts with Aria is a mix of down right domination mixed with some endearing, tender moments and some seriously, seriously smokin scenes!

As for Rowan, my heart kinda broke for him. I feel there’s so much more to his story, which I really, really hope we get to see in the next book. He’s got the self sacrificial part down to a T, I can’t help but feel there’s so much more to him than we’ve seen so far. Would love to see his POV!

“I never wanted perfect,” he says, fierce and unwavering. “I only ever wanted you. Exactly as you are, whatever comes next.”

I’m not sure how much of a role I want him to play in Aria’s next steps, but I know I shall be hot stepping to read the next instalment as soon as it’s available to I can find out!

I was lucky enough to receive an ARC version of this from the author for which I am very grateful!

Thank you to the author for providing me an early copy of this book.

Who knew I would find a new favorite book by randomly scrolling Instagram and signing up for an early copy of this? I read the description and was instantly intrigued. Going into it I had zero expectations. Now I’m obsessed! I had no idea going into it we would be following sisters and going on their own paths and I loved every minute of it. I’m so down bad for Dom. Honestly I think I have a thing for characters called Dom since this is the second book with this name I’ve been obsessed with. I love a good broody, dark hero and we get that from Dom in spades! I’m on my knees for him and I would literally do anything for him. I can also totally relate to Aria. This story is everything I wanted but didn’t know I needed. I loved the magic system as well. And that ending?! I need the next book! Honestly this deserves infinity stars! If you want a good story with relatable characters that you can invest in then this is the story for you. I can’t tell you how obsessed I am without saying I’m obsessed lol.

This book was not what I expected. There is romance.
So, Dom and Rowe both got a thing for our main girl, Aria, but Aria has to figure out what she wants.
Personally, I'm team Rowe!!!
There's also Luna, now this girl, she's got issues if you ask me. At first, she seemed kinda naive and easily manipulated. Turns out...
So, there's magic, but not just any magic, the bad kind!? It's blood magic it's the kind used for power.
Now, Power... is a big word because without it, you are nothing, right? It's more important than love or money or family. Without power, what do you really have? Besides all those other things I listed.
Right, you have nothing!!
So back to my boy Rowe, he has this kind of friend/made family member. His name is Griff, and he's kinda funny in his own right. But that's all I'm giving ya. Sorry ya'll. That's the end. Better luck somewhere else.

Wow, this book had me feeling all of the feels! I was laughing, crying and raging throughout it.

This story felt so unique and I loved every single second of it.

You have a powerful FMC, Aria, who isn’t afraid of saying it how it is and what she wants. Then you have the more introverted FMC, Luna, I can’t say too much on her at the moment because I am not her friend! Two delicious MMC’s, Rowe and Dom, good luck deciding who you love more!

This story also had some amazing side characters who I am dying to read more about. Griff, absolutely hilarious! He really had me laughing out loud.

Ps. I’m team Rowe😍

THE ENDING?! I need book 2 immediately!

This book made me feel EVERYTHING. I mean everything: love, hope, rage, grief… I giggled, I gasped!

When Blood Runs Red is one of most vivid and memorable books I’ve read. I knew the first few chapters in I was going to be captivated! From the complexity of characters, to the immersive world building… this is dark urban fantasy through and through!

Now…Rowe and Dom. How does one choose one over the other!?!? I’m not sure where my heart would take me there. Our girl Aria better buckle up too, I can’t wait to see more of what happens to her though!

THE ENDING!?. I need book two NOW.
Highly recommend reading this beauty!!! ☺️

This book was absolutely amazing.

It took me a little while to adjust to the fact that it’s a dark urban fantasy with scientists and a dystopian society. But then I was hooked. I thought it might be too political at first, but the political intrigue turned out to be the perfect balance.

Just when you start to piece together the mystery of the parents’ deaths, plot twists and betrayals start appearing and suddenly you don’t know what’s true anymore or who you can trust.

This book has the perfect mix of story, spice, political intrigue, world building and mystery. Also lovable side characters!

Now I desperately need the next book because I have to know what happens next.

What an intricate world that has been designed.

Review of an ARC

I loved this book! It was a page turner for me. I stayed up into the wee hours of the morning to finish reading it because I couldn't put it down and it was SO worth losing sleep for! The way the author combined magic with technology was unique from other magic technology books. The world was different, it didn't feel like a cookie cutter world. I enjoyed the characters and several of them surprised me! The plot twists that I didn't see coming hit hard. This was a roller coaster. It does end on a cliffhanger and now, sadly, I have to wait until the next book comes out to see what happens. And I can't wait to read it! I definitely recommend giving this book a read!

This is a great book if you like lots and lots of detailed world building and inner monolog. There was spice but it was minimal. I felt it dragged on a bit at times when a part could have been a little less. The characters were intense for sure! They really are what had me continue reading, I wanted to see where they went. At the end, the plot twist had me reading well into the night so I could find out the what explained that twist.
