Their hearts soar together. Their world demands they stay apart.
In Embernia, where dragons rule the skies and loyalty is forged in flame, Rhealyn Wyndward wants only one power. Not for glory—but to ensure no one she loves is ever broken again. Branded dangerous for the magic in her mind, she hides her scars behind ambition and joins the elite dragon riders, determined to rise through the ranks.
But her mission is threatened by the one man she cannot ignore.
Vaylen Stormsong, High Prime of the Sky Order, is honor-bound and unshakable—until Rhealyn crashes into his world with stormfire in her veins and a defiant spark in her eyes. He's her commander. She's the chaos he never saw coming. And in the skies, secrets fly faster than dragons.
Their connection is forbidden. Their attraction, explosive. And the king who watches them from the shadows would destroy them both before letting their bond ignite a rebellion.
In a realm of aerial warfare, elemental magic, and treacherous court politics, love is the most dangerous weapon of all.
Will Rhealyn and Vaylen risk everything for a passion that could change Embernia forever—or lose each other to the war between heart and duty?

Full disclosure, I DNF’d this one. I really gave it a shot though, I made it 41% of the way through the book, but I just couldn’t do it anymore. So with that being said, understand that everything I’m saying is my opinion from the first half of the book and that things might’ve changed by the second half, I just never got far enough to find out.
The beginning was just confusing, I had no idea what was going on or who anyone was, but not in a fun way. I felt like I missed something I was supposed to know. It also didn’t help that the names were all long and odd, made it hard to remember their names and who’s who. But I eventually got them all down and could follow along.
I also didn’t love the wording in this book. As far as terminology, they described the sound of a dragon spitting as hawk tua 👎🏻. No thank you. Not the kind of book I’m trying to read. Their name calling also consisted of calling each other mutton turds… I just don’t even know about that one. I don’t think it’s having the desired effect on me, it just makes the person saying it seem dumb to me. But on a more general note, the wording was written in a way where it’s mostly the characters thoughts, but not in a good way. As I went through I found myself realizing that I, or anyone else, could’ve written this book and used this wording. It was simple. It also got confusing at times to follow because the character often talked to herself or hallucinated, but her dragon also talked to her and frequently was confused on if it was her dragon talking to her or herself.
As for the plot of the book, it was described as fourth wing (one of my favorite series) mixed with avatar the last airbender, which I also like. Not how I’d describe the book. There was definitely similarities to fourth wing with the dragon element, but that’s about it. The love interest in this one is described as “his reputation for the rules and honor are widely spoken of”… not the typical love interest in books, at least not the ones I read. As soon as I read that line, it immediately made me think he’d be a stickler for the rules and boring/vanilla. Which he kinda was but kinda wasn’t. As for the main girl… her goal in the book is to seduce him. Already with that, not a fan, and then she was really confident in her abilities and full of herself which just annoyed me. Their whole relationship felt very methodical and plotting how best to seduce him, there was no feeling or emotion, which is what I at least want from a romance. But there wasn’t a whole lot of that going on, their relationship was all physical, which is probably because they don’t really know each other well enough for emotions to play into it, they don’t really talk to each other, they just make out.
But there’s not really any emotion to this book, it felt very shallow. There wasn’t any depth to the characters, you have no emotional investment in their life/plot line. I couldn’t care less about them, if they got killed off it wouldn’t even matter. But there’s not even a good plot to save the book.
This book kind of felt like someone wrote down their thoughts on what they wanted to happen without adding emotion, depth, or the journey. I felt like nothing happened and there seemed to be missing steps in between to get them there. She’d had something and then instantly love it 3 pages later and I’d be confused what changed her mind.
Overall, I didn’t love it. I kept reading because I was an ARC reader and I wanted to give it a chance. But after reading 41% of the book and still feeling like this, it didn’t feel worth it to finish. I wouldn’t have even read that far if it was just an independent read I’d found.
“Yes. This is a mistake, but I’ve never been the type of man to do anything in half measures. I already was having a tough time getting you out of my head, Rhealyn. After tonight, it will be impossible. So if you’ll let me, I won’t only own this mistake, I will make it over and over again.”
Dragon Riders, a military academy, war and forbidden love. And on top of all that, he falls first. Yes please!
This is an enjoyable read by Ingrid Seymour. We have Rhea, who recently just became a dragon rider, and she is hiding some deep dark secrets. With forbidden power and a murder under her belt she is just trying to live her dream of being a dragon rider before everything comes crashing down around her. On the night of her final test to get her dragon, she meet Vaylen.
Vaylen is the High Prime. Second in command of the military and the leader of the clutch that Rhea is assigned to. He is hot, he's driven, he's in charge and he's got eyes for Rhea as soon as he lays eyes on her.
They share a searing mutual attraction, but any relationship between them is strictly against the rules for several reasons. As they grow closer and the pull between them becomes too much to ignore, the murder investigation intensifies and Rhea is a suspect. Doing her best to hide her abilities and cover her tracks, Rhea is trying to hold it all together and find a way to hang on to her dragon and Vaylen for as long as she can.
There is some serious heat between Vaylen and Rhea and the build up is hot. The world and the characters are well developed and the dragons are on point. The cliffhanger at the end was NOT at all what I was expecting and I need to know what happens next! This is a fun romantasy with spice and an interesting plot that kept me engaged and turning the page until I passed out with my Kindle in my hand. Definitely looking forward to the next book in this series to see how this all plays out. Something big is coming for Rhea, I suspect.
If you tossed Fourth Wing and The Last Airbender into a fire and let the ashes rise on dragon wings, you’d get something close to Swift Wings Shadowed Heart. But make no mistake: this story carves out a space all its own. The stakes are steep, the magic is wild, and every page feels like a trial by storm.
Rhealyn is the kind of heroine you fight beside. Smart, scarred, and stubborn to a fault. She’s not here to be saved... she’s here to earn her wings and set the world ablaze on her terms. Watching her navigate the brutal Sky Order, push back against expectations, and wrestle with a power that could cost her everything? Yeah… that hit deep.
And then there’s Vaylen! Storm-born, honor-bound, and not nearly as unshakable as he pretends to be. Their chemistry is a slow build, full of tension and hard choices, and it’s that kind of forbidden that hurts just right. There’s no instant romance here - just friction, fire, and feelings neither of them are ready for.
The pacing? Razor-sharp. There’s no room to breathe and no desire to stop. From page one, you’re dropped into a world already burning, and the flames only climb higher. I never once hit a lull. If anything, I was racing the pages to see what would break first... the world, the characters, or my heart.
The magic system is layered and lived-in. Elemental forces feel both ancient and intimate, and the lore of Embernia pulses beneath every line. Dragons aren’t just background - they’re legacy, power, danger, and soul. The world feels dangerous, like it's holding its breath, and Rhealyn just might be the match that sets it off.
This book? It earned every star. If you want heartache, heat, dragons, and a heroine who bites back, Swift Wings Shadowed Heart delivers. And the second I closed that final page, I was already craving book two.
This book is the story of a mean popular girl who blames all of her problems on one guy who was loosely involved in her mother’s death.
She spends her whole life plotting to kill him at her high school graduation, does it, and then gets everything she wants without really trying, including the dragon that nearly killed her friend’s brother. When he is upset about this, she insults him in a way she knows will provoke him to violence and alienation from his friends. She decides to spend all of her time at war college seducing her boss and sleeping her way to the top until she realizes that she actually can make it on her own merit because she has next to no real competition. Her attempts to cover up the murder she did were so bad that she is caught mere days afterwords but then a random even happens to derail the plot and it ends.
I have no idea what the point of any of this is or why I’m supposed to root for any of these stupid mean people. It’s like a former high school bully read Fourth wing and thought that Jack Barlowe didn’t do anything wrong and should have been the hero of the story.
This was my very first E-ARC read and I couldn’t put this book down. The fantasy was amazing, the storyline was fun and also intense at times which made for a very well written book and the romance was somewhat of a slow burn but the tension and heat between the 2 characters is everything.
Highly recommend reading if you’re a fantasy reader still with an Onyx Storm hangover.
Thank you to the author for giving me the privilege to get this book as an e-book and read it. It was exactly what I needed.
Nice dragon riding book. 4 stars cause it was an entertaining easy read, but read to the end for the negatives, cause there's quite a few.
To those saying "fourth wing rip-off" (and I say this in every dragon riding book I read now because fourth wing got so popular that people forget other very similar dragon riding books existed before fourth wing) 👏🏻FOURTH👏🏻WING👏🏻ISNT👏🏻THE👏🏻FIRST👏🏻DRAGON👏🏻RIDING👏🏻WAR👏🏻BOOK👏🏻EVER👏🏻MADE👏🏻AND 👏🏻THEY👏🏻ARE👏🏻ALL👏🏻SIMILAR👏🏻
Now that that is out of the way, I liked how not everyone has the ability to talk to their dragons, except our FMC who is a weaver. I also liked the fact that the "schooling" didn't start off from beginning because she already "graduated". So basically we just see her honing her stronger powers she got after bonding. Another thing I liked is not all dragons bond. They have riders yes, but only 2 have bonded.
I liked our FMC, she was strong and had a plan that she executed. She got caught of course, but like duh that was going to happen. I wish she took advantage of her weaver abilities, as that would've made the book better, but I get why she had them on-lock (cause she could get killed for it). To the comments about her "sleeping her way to top" that was literally her plan to maximize her power, QUICKLY, and she explained why, multiple times. Don't be delusional and act like it doesn't happen in every other book when you have a low rung, new recruit, bottom of the totem pole FMC lusting after an MMC with a LOT of power, simply because she did it fully on purpose. In the other books the strength and the power is the whole reason the lust starts. At least this FMC can admit it though.
Our MMC was kinda bland, but was honestly a nice change to the Shadow daddies usually in dragon riding books.
Their relationship didn't have much chemistry honestly. Very lusty, yet bland. Not much depth, cause they never really do any "get-to-know" you.
The worldbuilding, in the dragon aspect, was interesting. Their goddess is an ancient female dragon, the only one in existence, and she disappeared centuries ago. Dragons are dying off because she's not there to mother them. It's a rough spot for the dragons, but we didn't learn much about the why or what happened to her.
The worldbuilding, in the war/political aspect, was lacking. We don't get much at all there, just that theres a hatred between them. The king is a douchecanoe and I don't get why the dragons are helping tbh.
The pacing was sloooooow. The whole book takes place in 2 weeks. Enough happens to keep the interest imo though.
The depth to the (wind) magic system I liked. Elemental systems are extremely common, but in this one each thing had specific names and a duology between the different elements for specific maneuvers. We really only got that info for wind though, not the rest.
Big, confusing cliffhanger at the end.
All In all, good read. Will definitely be reading book 2 cause I haven't a clue what the ending meant. Definitely had a lot of negatives, but again, it was entertaining enough for 4 stars imo.
I absolutely loved and devoured this book. If you love dragons, magic and some forbidden romance this is definitely the book for you.
Rhea and Vaylen are such a power move they would be unstoppable if they became a couple. And Zephyros is probably my favorite dragon ever lol. If you’re a huge fan of our dragon daddy Tairn then you will love Zephyros as well. I have a feeling they would get along well.
I absolutely need the next book already. Thank you Ingrid Seymour for giving me the opportunity to read this book as an ARC read. I loved it.
Dragons, magic, revenge and forbidden love make for an exciting read that I could not put down. I loved the character development and world building of this book. The FMC Rhea is strong willed and determined to get what she wants, the MMC Vaylen is dedicated and loyal to his duties, but once the two of them meet they struggle to choose between these things and their desires. I am very excited to be an ARC reader for the second book Silver Claws and Crimson Tears and I can’t wait to see what comes next for Rhea.
Rhealyn can't wait to be a dragon rider and to finally take her revenge on the man who killed her mother. Or did he? Vaylen, High Prime, dragon rider, and solider find Rhealyn messing with his control. Can he control his desire? Will Rhealyn get her chance to become a dragon rider?
For my first ARC Read I was not disappointed. This book had the perfect amount of fantasy and slow burn that I have come to love over the last year and a half. Rhea is a strong FMC that would do whatever it takes to protect those that she cares about. For anyone a fan of fantasy, dragons, magic, and more this is a definite must read. 💗
I have a new obsession I need this in physical form ASAP I absolutely love this book if you loved fourth wing you will fall in love with this book it is absolutely amazing the characters every time you go to put this book down you won't be able to do it you'll have to pick it right back up and continue reading it is so so good I cannot say it enough I absolutely love it and cannot wait to read more by this phenomenal author
This was my first ARC read! If you are still struggling from your Onyx hangover READ THIS! I loved the characters and the accuracy of the descriptions. I felt like I could actually see the story like I was watching the movie!!
Spice level: 🌶️🌶️
Thank you to the author for allowing me to read this!
“I can keep secrets. Can you?” Mrs. Seymour! What! What! I have read many fantasy romance novels, but I have to say to this amazing book is “WHAT!”
I mean, I am need of the second book now! Just give me the entire series. 😉 please
This book has it all. An amazing strong FMC with a need to prove herself and a hidden past that she herself doesn’t want to address. The MMC is charming and brooding with I have to save the world complex.
This book has an Amazing plot, intrigue, suspense, twist/ turns, and the romance tension is out of this world. Oh let’s not forget the witty banter and DRAGONS!
The CLIFFHANGER!! That cliffhanger is leaving me restless. Please refer to my above comment of needing the second book immediately
All I can say is you ma’am, YOU can keep a secret!! This is a must read for the summer😎☀️
Thank you so much for allowing me to read this book in advance. I hope I get the privilege to ARC this entire series.
Title: Swift Wings Shadowed Heart Author: Ingrid Seymour My fellow readers what will have me coming back to read this book again and again? Why it’s the amazing characters, their monsteras, valiant dragons and the fascinating expeditions that they take on to save their homelands. Followed by all of the heroic moments intertwined within the romance. The mystery and suspense. And you cannot forget the magic, that makes this an exciting book to read. The creativity of the story is so remarkable that I could not stop reading Rhea’s story. Rhea is the main female character In the book. I positively liked her. You may like her too. Talk about a bad ass. Rhea is the girl that you would want in your corner. Her opening scene in the book reads like a Michael Corleone scene. Vengeance will be mine, mixed with, hell has no fury like a woman scorned. Obviously Gilbert didn’t get the memo about Rhea, but wait- what’s that you say? There are other powerful forces out there waiting. Watching? After I read that part, I just knew that I would be tucked in for the night with a must read. Don’t bother mommy. I’m reading a deliciously Romantasy tonight. And man what an outstanding book it is. Our main characters Rhea and Vaylen dominate the story from beginning to end. In the most hypnotic passionate way I might add. The writing around these two is so marvelous. Their story is steamy. Spicy. Sensual and oh so alluring. From the first moment they met. I knew that these two would have a telling story. And boy was it great. The book reads from from both Rhea and Vaylen point of view. But Rhea’s story is more telling than Vaylen’s. That didn’t bother me in no certain terms at all. It was the slow romance that did! I wanted some more playtime in the mountains. Lol. Just joking. No I wasn’t-. As I was saying Rhea is the driving force within Vaylen’s Clutch. That’s his team of soldiers that follow under him. I see so much more from Rhea’s character further in the book. Poor Vaylen seems to not know which way is up or which way is down when he’s around Rhea. Most of the time the two find themselves on opposite sides of the, whose the leader, whose the student dominance match. Zephyros wishes that they go work it off so that he can get back to his moping. With his strong masculine charm Vaylen runs his crew like a well oiled machine. I like how the writer put all her methodical writing in the creation of Vaylen’s character. The fine sculpted form down to the descriptive details of his thick thighs. Gets a reader a little warm in certain places. Rhea wasn’t the only girl drooling when came to the imagination of Vaylen Stormstong. I was picturing him and me doing all sorts of things. Talk about a well oiled machine. His piston’s details was very slow and very methodical. So as I was saying Vaylen Stormstrong’s character is not to morally gray, overbearing, or smug. He’s a very intimidating leader when needs to be and that’s quite alright with Rhea. Vaylen is what the people of Embernia would look for in a true leader. Readers believe me when I tell you that the writing in this book is on point. The writing is clear and precise. I understood where the plot was going. The dialogue was refreshing and on a much more maturer level among the characters. There are some moments between the characters and their dragons, where the dialogue is amusing. Those are the brief interactions that carry the lighthearted fun moments. I also found the characters very interesting. As I was saying about Gilbert… honestly why can’t you just be a good little boy and run along and play with your toys? I wanted Rhea to flick that little bug up against a wall. Or at least use her powers to smack him over a mountain somewhere. Far, far away. Rhea didn’t have time for Gilbert’s little games. There are other foes knocking at her door. Some that will have Rhea questioning her right to be in the academy and her capabilities of being a strong soldier. Thank you Silas very much! Gah! What is up with all these conniving, sneaky slithering snakes coming at my girl Rhea from all directions? You know what I think though. It just may not be all men who have their sights set on Rhea? I’m just saying. Well it’s a good thing that Rhea has her friends and her dear sweet, sweet Zephyros on her side. Isn’t that right Phoebe? My favorite character in the book is none other than Zephyros. He reminds me of that stick in the mud, grumpy older brother. That one where as a sister, you couldn’t resist irritating the hell out of him. Stop touching me. Stop touching me- mom! Tell Rhea to leave me alone and get out my room, as he slams the door on your face. Well with Zephyros it might be get of his back. Zephyros comebacks with Rhea are quite comical and cute. He’s a wise old dragon that you will enjoy reading. His protection over Rhea is like the fiercest big brother that anyone would come up against. The unique mixture of these characters with their talented personalities, and magical abilities are perfect for this book. Instead of the characters carrying the plot; it’s the plot that carries the characters. Their stories or the motivations to the characters stories are sometimes spirited, emotional and powerful. The dramatic moments are just as jaw dropping as the action sequences and challenges that Rhea, Vaylen and their team face. It’s affirmative for me to say that I loved this book. I give this book two snaps and a twist. Until next time my fellow readers. Read on!
I am at a loss as to the 4 and 5 star reviews for this book. Another 2025 BookTok popular title that just wasn’t very good that everyone says is the best EVER (read: Silver Elite).
While not marketed as such, this is an almost an idea-for-idea fanfic of Fourth Wing, but…with key differences that were, I suppose, meant to set it apart, but unfortunately just dragged it down.
The FMC is embued with all typically villainess traits. She’s ruthless, a murderer, has no personality, is extremely manipulative, is only interested in the MMC to further her social standing, and I could go on and on. There is simply just nothing to sympathize with, root for, or to like about her.
The MMC wants to be Xaden, but he is forever destined to be a Dain. Ugh, he uses words like boudoir and is utterly unsexy (except of course, in the mind numbingly, constant inner monologues of the FMC drooling over his beauty and his perfect chest). He’s obsessed with following rules, except when it comes to having the subordinate FMC in his boudoir. But in a romantasy twist it’s the MMC here who is hyperfixated on the should I/shouldn’t I trope. And, again, it’s super unsexy. Oh, and her dragon hates him. Although, one hopes with that ending that they are not endgame.
The dragons are all the same, there is no differentiation other than what powers they have and what color they are: orange for fire, silver for air, blue for water, etc.
There is no communication between the dragons and their riders. All of the riders, other than the FMC who has a second power of “weaving,” a forbidden mind power (mind powers = bad in all romantasy dragon riding universes), rely on “feelings” and “intuition” with their dragons. So no snappy dragon chats. Which wouldn’t be bad if the human characters had any redeeming qualities.
We skip all of the “schooling,” jumping straight into the “choosing” which is extremely “light” and really doesn’t seem to pose any challenges.
We are meant to believe that not one, of course, but two dragons want to “bond” with the annoying FMC. Oh and bonding is almost unheard of in this world.
There are no female dragons because the “goddess” of the dragons, the mother, lover, sister, queen of ALL dragons disappeared 1,000 years ago and no dragons have been born since, so dragons are dying out. And ew, no wonder she disappeared…that’s a lot of responsibility for one dragon.
There are even enemies that the riders have to go and fight, with barely any training mind you, called Venin, oops I mean Screechclaws (can you guess that they screech and have claws?).
Oh that brings up names…every character name involves their ability, Wyndward, Stormsong, Stonethrower, Firemaker (ok just kidding on those last two, but you see where I’m going). Almost to the point of distraction.
There are literally no side characters of import. None. Not one. The FMC has no friends and neither does the MMC. There are people around them peripherally, including a Jack Barlow wannabe, but none that are truly a part of the story or that you get invested in.
There is even an almost-verbatim-tragic-Liam scene with no tragedy and serving no purpose.
All in all, the things that made Fourth Wing a surprise success are missing here; good, easy, snappy banter and dialogue; an interesting plot; big twists; great characters (even all secondary characters); hot spice; a worthy MMC and (sometimes) FMC; interesting villains; brutal training; and of course the dragons.
I am in no way dissing fanfic, and I know that I am the exception here, but this was simply not worthy of its muse, or original enough to stand on its own, at least not for me.
This book should be rated new adult for make out scenes and language. I always try to look out for parents that are being cautious what young teens read. Therefore I put warnings in my reviews. That being said this is an imaginative start to a world reliant on dragons & powers to survive. In this world dragons have discovered that humans have special powers that when combined with the dragons become stronger. The powers are wind, fire, lightening, water, earth, & listening to peoples thoughts. The latter is called a Weaver and because people were scared of them they killed all the Weavers. To make sure no more develop the gift they have a few people called Neutro's who search for the powers in young children. When they find them they rip the power out of the child so they only have one power left. Rhealyn's Neutro was supposed to call someone more qualified when he discovered she was a Weaver. Instead he thought he was skilled enough to rip the power out himself. Rhealyn was scared to death of the man & because of it the Neutro allowed her pregnant mother to stay in the room. Rhealyn felt like the Neutro was trying to kill her so her powers lashed out. Because the Neutro was a bad man with horrible morals a tragedy occurred that day. Rhealyn lost her mother that day. She and her father grew bitter towards the Neutro. Rhealyn planned to avenge her mother's death. She attended the academy to train to be a dragon rider. That gave her a chance to get close to the Neutro. After she murdered him her plan was to leave to train with her dragon. And after 4 weeks then she would be sent to the front lines to join the war effort. They are fighting Harper & hideous creatures called the screechclaws. The female dragon goddess has disappeared & without her no more dragons can be born. And the dragons are slowly being killed by the screechclaws. When Rhealyn meets Vaylen she is drawn to him. The chemistry & electricity when they touch is off the charts. The problem is he's her superior. According to Sky Order they can't be together. However, when she goes through the testing their powers connect. Something that isn't supposed to be possible. Rhealyn had planned to find a powerful man to marry so they could become a powerful family. Then no one could hurt her again. When she meets her dragon and they bond, something very rare, it seems she has made a ally for life. He promises to never let anything happen to her. As Vaylen and Rhealyn keep coming into close proximity to each other their restraint weakens. Neither can deny the pull. Once they give in it seems all Rhealyn's dreams are coming true. Until the police start looking into her as a suspect. Will Vaylen protect her or will he follow orders like he's always done? There is something about Rhealyn that gets under his skin. He craves her!
Thank you to the author for an e-arc of this book! My first taste for her books was the Eldyerstone series (by the way, check that out!!) and was excited to hear she had a new book coming out that had dragons. I mean, you say dragons, I’m in 😂
Rhea has been training for the past 4 years to become a Skyrider and have her very own dragon. In a world where it seems only the families with powerful names become them, she’s out to prove to herself and everyone else that she can become powerful and untouchable despite her background. She’s focused, determined, with her eye on her goal: some honorable, some not so much. She’s got a secret to hide and if anyone finds out, she’s dead.
Vaylen is her Prime (essentially, commanding officer). He’s powerful in his own right, as well as his dragon. The dragons have been fighting with the humans for centuries after their matriarch disappeared without a trace, resulting in no new dragons being born in centuries. It’s on Vaylen to make sure Rhea is trained properly to fight their enemies no matter the cost. For a man who’s always followed the rules though, Rhea becomes his biggest weakness. He can’t keep his mind off of her and is willing to break everything he stands for to be with her. But even he doesn’t know everyone about Rhea and will their attraction and desire for one another be enough?
I flew through this book! It’s not the typical “dragon academy” setting. Rhea’s already been through the academy training and she’s not some weakling just starting out. She’s strong and powerful. We have different types of elemental magic that each rider matches to their dragon, which was unique. We still have training but it comes more in the form of their bonds with their dragons and their increased magic from it. We still get forbidden love because Vaylen is Rhea’s instructor, and they’re both powerful at that…something that could make the King very nervous.
The spice 🌶️….its not even just the spice itself but the TENSION between these two! And it’s dual POV and so we get to see Vaylen’s YEARNING which honestly outdoes Rhea, which I loved reading for once. That man cannot stop thinking about her 🥵 Plus, we do get a few spicy scenes, which for a book 1 for Ingrid is actually a bit more than usual (at least the books of hers that I’ve read). So, yay for that! Plus, always gotta a love a small jealousy scene 😜
That ending/cliffhanger! I honestly never saw it coming and am still trying to wrap my head around what just happened! 🤯 I need answers and I need them now!!!
Highly recommend if you like your dragon romantasy, swoon worthy MMC, high sexual tension, etc.
Wow I never expected to love this book as much as I did, I actually came across this Author on TikTok and I am so glad i did.
This book was absolutely incredible, the FMC is a strong, independent and a charming character. This isn’t your typical dragon book, the magic with the dragons is a different kind, something i did not expect when going into this, you cannot just bond to a dragon, you can ride the dragon that chooses you, but these amazing majestic creatures only bond to the strongest of humans. Rhealyn (FMC) is holding on to something from her past that she keeps firmly shut in her mind and she cannot bring herself to even discuss let alone think about it, she is haunted every time she returns home to her father. She is out for revenge and by the goddess does she get it.
The magic is completely different to what i have read before, there are 7 different types of elemental magic and our Dear Rhea has the Wind element. She continues to want to prove herself, while she was training in the academy and being top of her class and year, other students continue to dislike her and tell her she isn’t worth a dragon because she isn’t from high class parents. But she proves them wrong. (This book takes place after the academy) And what is with that King goddess please tell me Zephyros slices him to bits in one of these books because he really is the epitome of childish entitled King.
The MMC Vaylen, is gorgeous, charming and brooding so hard throughout this entire book, I am so glad his POV is there also because he yearns, and yearns hard and it’s such a relief to have a MMC POV. He is her High Prime and their relationship is very much AGAINST THE RULES, the forbidden romance, and those spicy scenes and the tensions is to absolute die for.
THAT CLIFFHANGER EXCUSE ME!! WHAT?? I never seen it coming and boy was it such an amazing ending even though I hate a cliffhanger I really cannot wait to see what Silver Claws Crimson Tears has to offer. If i could read it now i would eat it up like it was my last meal.
Definitely cannot wait for BOOK 2 so Ingrid if you want to like release that this year, we would be incredibly grateful.
Thank you for choosing me to be an arc reader, I hope I’m on the list for book 2.

Swift Wings Shadowed Heart delivers everything I crave in an action packed romantasy and then some. With a fierce, morally gray heroine, a commanding and conflicted hero, and a dragon bond that feels both ancient and intimate, Ingrid Seymour has created a world that hooked me from page one.
Rhealyn “Rhea” Wyndward is not your typical wide-eyed academy initiate. She’s already endured the training, carved her place in a society stacked against her, and hides a dangerous secret that could cost her life. She’s smart, unflinchingly bold, and walking a razor’s edge between duty and defiance. When she bonds instantly with a rare, grumpy dragon, becoming only the second person alive who can understand him, it becomes clear that she’s not just powerful…she’s pivotal!
Enter Vaylen Stormsong, the High Prime of the Sky Order: disciplined, by-the-book, and absolutely doomed the moment Rhea steps into his orbit. The forbidden tension between them crackles with intensity. And because the story is told in dual POV, we get a front-row seat to Vaylen’s internal unraveling, his longing, his restraint, and the ultimate choice to either uphold the rules or follow his heart. Spoiler: it’s deliciously messy, with flaming hot tension.
The worldbuilding is rich with elemental magic, dragon lore, and a militaristic setting that feels like a darker twist on Dragon Rider Academies. But this isn't just about the romance or the dragons. There’s a deeper political and magical mystery lurking in the shadows. What happened to the missing dragon goddess? Who, or what, are the Screechclaws? And how is Rhea connected to it all?
By the time I hit the last few chapters, my jaw was on the floor. The final reveal absolutely wrecked me, and the cliffhanger twist was the kind of bold storytelling I live for.
If you loved Fourth Wing, From Blood and Ash, or crave high-stakes fantasy where forbidden love and destiny collide, this one belongs on your shelf. I’ve read several of Seymour’s series, but Swift Wings Shadowed Heart might just be her best yet. Bring on book two—I’m not emotionally prepared, but I need it immediately.
Where oh Where do I start when it comes to Ingrid Seymore ? Every book i read from all here series have me nailed to my seat. Swift wings Shadowed Heart is no exception. First thank you for the amazing opportunity to get this as an ARC read. The book is newly released and such an beautiful book go read it don't take my word for it.
* Dragon riders * Slow burn * Forced proximity * Romantasy * Forbidden love * Ancient secrets
Favourite quote from the book : "Yes this is a mistake, but I've never been the type of man to do anything at half measures. I was already having a hard time getting you out of my head, Healing. After tonight, it will be impossible. So if you let me, I won't only own the mistake, I will make it over and over again!"
This is the first book in the Emberian Series. Rhealyn "Rhea" is an amazingly strong, smart, bold and stubborn beyond words, confident with an very sweet side for a morally grey FMC. There is a student- teacher romance that's happening between the two. Vaylen is very much googy two shoes/ rule -follower where Rhealyn is a bit of a crazy girl trying to seduce him and he is trying desperately to resist her. 😜
This is very much set in a rule/disciplinary military environment where rules need to be followed but like a school/college setup. I was intrigued by the war that was happening the romance unfolding between Rhea and Vaylen. With them being similar in some ways and completely different in another way. Vaylen is both vulnerable and alpha male. The character development was entertaining. Then the dragons the dragons im a sucker for that. There still is alot of questions but it's only the start of the series can't wait to read more.
The ending had me all feels and the cliffhanger was an surprise which I should have expected but caught me off guard so Ingrid now i can't wait for the 2nd book to be released thank you for the amazing worldbuilding and suspense that's still there.
If you love fantasy, dragons, and secret forbidden romance with a touch of murder, this is for you. I love the character development, could picture this world in my mind. It had a great plot with suspense, tension, romance, and the banter between the two is fabulous.

Meet Rhealyn, she only wants one power, to ensure no one she loves is ever broken again. She has been branded dangerous for her magic that she hides along with her scars. She is out for revenge, she wants to find the man that took her mothers life, she believes she knows who it is. On her journey she found the Elite Dragon Riders, she joined and had to prove herself, she’s smart, bold, stubborn. Her first task she was given was to find her a dragon. And oh my, wow. She did find one, and her dragon you will fall in love with, the bond that they create is so beautiful, and the banter wow. Her magical power is she hears voices in her head and it’s not necessarily a good thing for her to let anyone know. Dangerous. She found the man that she believes killed her mother, she took his life. Was it the right choice for her to make?
“I’ve never seen you before, “He says.” “You aren’t the kind of woman I would…fail to notice. What is your name?” “Rhealyn, but you can call me Rhae.”
When she joined the Elite Dragon Riders, her commander is Vaylen Stormsong, the high prime of the Sky order he is honor bound, and unshaken-until Rhealyn comes crashing into his world. He is her teacher. He is charming and in command and can he control his desire that has been created when she entered into his world.
“Yes, this is a mistake, but I’ve never been the type of man to do anything at half measures.” “I was already having a hard time getting you out of my head, healing.” “After tonight it will be impossible. So, if you let me, I wont only own the mistake, I will make it over and over again.”
Will they risk everything or lose each other permanently?
If you're looking to itch your fourth wing hangover, this book will help. It is a slow-burning romance, with a dragon rider hiding a remarkable ability, bent on revenge, which she takes swiftly at the start of the book. While the book follows the same themes that Fourth Wing does, please make no mistake: this story carves out a space all its own. The stakes are steep, the magic is wild, and every page feels like a trial by storm. Rhealyn is the heroine you want in your clutch, fighting beside you. Smart, scared of being discovered to have a forbidden power, and stubborn. She’s not here to be saved... she’s here to earn her wings and set the world ablaze on her terms. Watching her navigate the brutal Sky Order, push back against expectations, and wrestle with a power that could cost her everything? She also fights against the desire to have a man who is forbidden to her, but sets her heart ablaze. Then there is Vaylen! Storm-born, honor-bound, and not nearly as unshakable as he pretends to be. Rhealyn and Vaylen's chemistry is a slow build, full of tension and hard choices, and that forbidden hurts just right. There’s no instant romance here - just friction, fire, and feelings neither is ready for. This will help stoke your desire for more of Violet and Xaden's relationship woes. The world feels dangerous, like it's holding its breath, and Rhealyn might be the match that sets it off. This book? It earned every star. If you want heartache, heat, dragons, and a heroine who bites back, Swift Wings Shadowed Heart delivers. And the second I closed that final page, I was already craving book two.
Ingrid Seymour's next fantasy is here. Swift Wings Shadowed Heart is the first book in the Wings of Embernia series, and it was amazing.
Rhealyn "Rhea" is a piece of work. She's smart, bold, stubborn, and confident, with a surprisingly sweet side for a morally gray MFC. She's also a little crazy. I liked her, and I'm surprised that I do. There's a forbidden student-teacher romance going on. She's trying to seduce him as part of her grand plan, and he's desperately trying to resist. You could cut the tension with a knife. Where Rhea is a bit reckless, Vaylen (her instructor) is very much a rule-follower. You'd think they'd clash, and you would be right, but they are alike as much as they're dissimilar. They sort of balance out while unraveling each other at the same time.
At first, I thought this would be in a war college setting. Still, no, this is full-on military service with dragon riders and elementals. It was awesome! I really enjoyed the magic and a certain grumpy dragon. The romantic tension and a few rivalries were entertaining. Still, it was the mystery surrounding the war that was puzzling me. Who/What are the Screechclaws? How did the war start? Where is the dragon goddess? And so many more questions. I love a good mystery.
Nothing could have prepared me for the ending. Seymour left me in utter and complete shock! The final piece of Rhea's background was revealed, and it was devastating. Then, just when I thought that was it, a bomb dropped in the form of a twist I didn't see coming. What a cliffhanger! If you're looking for your next fantasy read, this is it.
ARC Review 🖤 Swift Wings Shadowed Heart 🐉 Written By: @ingridseymourauthor
Overall: 5/5 Overall plot: 5/5 Character development: 5/5 Pace: 5/5 World building: 5/5 Spice 🌶️: 2/5
Thank you, Ingrid, for allowing me to be a part of your ARC team and read Swift Wings Shadowed Heart ahead of its release date.
This is my first time reading Ingrid’s work and I want to read more of her other published books! It was so easy to get into the world and right off the bat, you want to root for Rhealyn Wyndward. She’s got an ability that society deems as dangerous and if found out, she’d be executed right away. She works her way through Aerie Academy with the sole purpose to be paired with a dragon.
Not only is she paired with a dragon, they bond instantly and with her secret ability, it makes it easier to understand the wise but grumpy dragon which she is only now the second person to do so currently alive.
Vaylen Stormsong, High Prime (commanding officer) of the Sky Order is a no-nonsense dragon rider and also Rhealyn’s elemental order’s teacher and any relations other than a professional one is strictly forbidden. With close quarters, high stakes, and secrets threatening to be discovered, the attraction between Vaylen and Rhealyn is explosive and inevitable.
If you’re having a Fourth Wing or From Blood and Ash slump, pick up this slow burn, dual POVs, morally gray forbidden between pupil and mentor romantasy, you might be surprised! Also, of note, there is a cliffhanger!

This book absolutely soars — and then dives straight into your heart.
Swift Wings, Shadowed Heart pulled me in from the very first page and held me captive with its addictive blend of slow-burning romance, rich fantasy, and unforgettable characters.
Rhealyn is strong, smart, and layered — a character you instantly root for. And then there’s Vaylen Everett Stormsong, her commanding officer and one of the most intense, complicated, and magnetic love interests I’ve read in a while. Their dynamic? Tension-filled perfection. He’s her superior, yes — but there’s a powerful mutual respect that builds into something much more, full of undeniable heat and emotional depth.
The banter between them, the unspoken pull, and those moments (“I’m about to make your scales rattle, woman” 😮💨🔥) are pure gold. Vaylen is both alpha and vulnerable — and absolutely unforgettable.
And then there’s Zephyros, the bond-dragon. A total badass with a protective spirit and cryptic wisdom that adds layers to the story. His connection with Rhealyn is just as important and heartfelt as her relationship with Vaylen — and I loved every second of it.
Ingrid Seymour writes with so much atmosphere — the worldbuilding is rich, the vibes are strong, and the emotional beats hit hard. The ending left me on a cliffhanger I didn’t see coming, and I’m already desperate for the next book.
If you love: 🐉 Fierce dragons 🔥 Commanding romance 💫 High-stakes fantasy with heart 💥 Deep character dynamics…
Then this needs to be your next read. An incredible start to what I know will be an epic series!
I forced myself to finish this book but I wish I had dropped it. Turns out there was nothing left for the author to tell us other than the ending and this after 30 chapters only.
I will give you what this book gave me so be aware of SPOILERS AHEAD:
1. Rhea kills her mother's killer (he was the reason Rhea killed her mother which we can guess from the start). 2. Rhea meet Vaylen for the first time without knowing who he is, so they kick off their relationship with want. 2. Rhea gets chosen as a dragon rider and starts her training of two weeks (it was 4 but had to be shorten down because they got invaded by the enemy). 5. She gets chosen by the worst dragon and forms a bond with him, but soon discovers he is the best and most beautiful one of them all. 6. There is some drama where her mates are jealous because she is so powerful and they are mean to her. 7. She fucks Vaylen because they can't hold it in their pants anymore. 8. They find out she killed the nasty ass who killed her mother and is after her to put her in jail while she refuses to run. 9. In the end, a man kidnaps her away (not Vaylen).
This is the whole story, I swear. I read 50 chapters, to know all of the above FUCKING 50!!! I'm really mad I even pushed past chapter 30 because by then we know everything except the ending. Waste of time but I thought at least the spice would be good, but nope, the sex made me roll my eyes so hard I actually got a headache.
I don't recommend this book, go find something worth it.
Holy dragon tales, what in the ancient cat gods did I just read?! I was not prepared. This is a full-blown, claws-out epic war academy fantasy where dragons don’t just choose riders—they judge you silently and might accept you if your vibes are right. No pressure.
Imagine Fourth Wing… but everyone’s born with their own signets, and dragons? Oh, they might bond with you—or just tolerate you while sending voiceless shade. Either way, my tail was twitching through every twist and I may or may not have broken my imaginary pearl necklace. Dramatically.
Oh, and let’s talk Heratrix—the Mother of all Dragons. Literally. She’s gone missing, like she went out for snacks and never came back. WHERE IS SHE? I’m not okay.
And that cliffhanger? I hissed like a soaked cat. Book 2—right meow. I’m not asking, I’m demanding.
Now the cast:
Rhealyn – GIRL. She’s the blueprint. Strong, fierce, takes no nonsense, and carries a secret deadlier than my stare when I’m out of snacks.
Zephyros – Okay. I didn’t think I could love a dragon more than Tairn, but this snarky, grumpy, overprotective dragon did not disappoint. The banter? Pure gold. He’s second on my dragon boyfriend list, respectfully.
Vaelyn Stormsong – I’m on the fence. He’s no Xaden (yet), but he has potential. The boyfriend shelf has made space… but my whiskers are tingling. He’s hiding something. And I want to know what.
This book? Jeffree approved. Paws down. Read it. Now.
