This Thawed Heart

Rate this book
She needs a bridegroom by the next full moon.
He resembles the man who betrayed her a century ago.
Can he break her spell, or is history doomed to repeat itself?

The Snow Queen surrounds herself with ice and snow to numb the losses she suffered a hundred years ago. However, with a new Blue Moon on the horizon, she has another chance to break a century-old curse. All she requires is a willing bridegroom . . . which can be tricky to find when all her previous marriages have ended in tragedy. Desperate times call for desperate measures, and in this case that means proposing to the last mortal she ever wants to see the man who eerily resembles her first love who quite literally broke her heart.

Prince has one goal in to woo and wed the legendary Snow Queen. His friends think he is under some kind of curse, but how can it be unnatural to love the most beautiful woman in the world? Unfortunately, she wants nothing to do with him— that is, until she asks him to spend the rest of his life with her. Granted, that life might be very short indeed, but Prince is willing to take that risk. Now if he can only find a way to thaw his beloved's heart before his own stops beating . . .

These violent delights have violent ends, and the line between love and madness is thin indeed.

This Thawed Heart is a loose sequel of This Frozen Heart, but it can be read on its own and has its own happily ever after. In this wintry tale you will find a no-spice reimagining of Romeo & Juliet with an enemies to lovers twist. There are vampires, star-crossed lovers, a sacrificial bridegroom who falls first, a reverse grumpy + sunshine pair, and true love's kiss.

When I first started This Frozen Heart, I thought Prince was off his rocker but extremely intriguing as to why he loved (aka was obsessed with) the Snow Queen, who wasn’t HORRIBLE in that book but who wasn’t a saint either so I don’t know why he liked her, or why she in turned acted so volatile towards him in their one and only meeting. And boy oh BOY were all those questions and more answered in this “unofficial” sequel, sometimes in the most insane and bonkers way possible while staying perfectly reasonable for a fantasy.

You don’t have to read This Frozen Heart first (or at all, but I highly recommend you do!) in order to understand what’s going on here, but I did feel I got a lot more context with a few other characters by having read that book first.

The most bonkers character I’ve ever read about to date is Alicia from Nicki Chapelway’s A Certain Sort of Madness, but Prince takes the cake for being the second most crazy (he’s not first purely because Alicia truly made me question my sanity which Prince never did, haha). At first I thought he was just oddly obsessive of the Snow Queen but as the story moved along and slowly started unraveling and revealing things I started to suspect some things and while I guessed a lot of it correctly I was also shocked and surprised by other things, and before I knew it he slipped into my heart and became a new favorite, the little thief. The Snow Queen also stole my heart and her emotions and heart were both tragic and heartwarming despite her cold facade that I couldn’t help but feel for her. The romance between these two is top notch, hands down one of the most stressful yet loving relationships I’ve read, and my only complaint on this is that we didn’t get to see their happily ever after nearly long enough at the end, boo. Other then that it’s perfect! And I KNEW they couldn’t trust Wolf (who I also was highly suspicious of in This Frozen Heart), I knew it! Can’t say much more without spoilers though, even though there’s SOOO much I want to rant about this character…

I don’t know what I expected with this being a Romeo and Juliet retelling but honestly it worked SO WELL. The tragedy, the heartache, the pain…it’s all here so raw and stark and full of heart and love it was sometimes hard to read just because of how MUCH depth was poured into this story yet I couldn’t look away either. And the way the timeline kept flipping from present to past and back, slowly stitching all the pieces and clues together, has me obsessed at how well crafted and seamlessly written it is; everything is designed to draw you in and not let go and I was happy for it to do so.

This story is beauty and tragedy all wrapped up in a gorgeous cover that I won’t be forgetting in a hurry; my favorite book of Jes’s so far, it honestly deserves that coveted five star rating and a future home on my physical bookshelf where many rereads are sure to come.

The Snow Queen has spent the last century trying to break a curse, at the cost of far too many bridegrooms, and trying to escape the pain of betrayal by the man she loved. When a new opportunity to try to break the curse appears, she can't turn it down even if it means having to propose to, and marry, a man who looks painfully like the man who broke her heart. Prince knows the Snow Queen's reputation but his love for her is strong enough to make him willing to face the danger. But as they travel together towards the place of the ceremony, a truth comes to light that may destroy everything - or solve everything. Can Prince make sure it's the latter when the former seems so much more likely?

I picked this up at a time when I had a few things to do. I know I shouldn't have, but I thought I could just read a chapter as a break. I couldn't. I didn't quite read it in one sitting, but far too close for the things I should have been doing. Something about the characters, the mystery in the background of the story and the way it was all brought together made this far too hard to put down. I particularly loved Prince's self-sacrificing love, willing to do whatever it took for the Snow Queen to be rescued from the prison at least partly of her own making. Speaking as someone who never liked the story of Romeo and Juliet, I found this a far more enjoyable and satisfying story in so many ways. I'm eager to see what the author will write next!.

This Thawed Heart is a sequel of sorts of This Frozen Heart which is part of the multiauthor series Seasons of Legends and I have to admit I was initially drawn to this series because of the amazing covers.

You don’t have to read the previous book to understand this story, but I think you get a bit more backstory about some of the characters.

This book is also connected to several others by Jes Drew since some of her stories are set in the same world with the same magical creatures and the same magic system.

While this is a Romeo and Juliet retelling, the main character is actually the Snow Queen we all know and hate love. There are also vampires and werewolves and yes, that’s a lot.

It took me a while to get into the story and while I liked the characters and generally enjoy Jes Drew’s writing, I felt like it was a bit too much. Like there was so much going on, so many backstories to consider. I don’t really know what the “problem” was here, since mashups can work really well (and I’ve read others by this author where they do), but this one didn’t really work for me.

It wasn’t bad, but I felt a bit overwhelmed and not really invested because of it.
I have to admit that I am neither a fan of Romeo and Juliet nor vampires and werewolves, so this might also have influenced my enjoyment of the book.

I feel as though this was such a creative way to tell a love story that appears to end in a tragedy with a different result. The MMC was so devoted to the Snow Queen, but I was just as puzzled as the character himself over the reason for his adoration of her. Each time he interacted with the Snow Queen, I kept hoping that he would actually be her first true love. But like the Snow Queen, I couldn’t figure out how that would be possible due to the issue of him not aging. It simply seemed impossible or at the very least highly improbable.
Something that surprised me about the story was learning just what the Snow Queen does to her grooms on the wedding night. Yikes! Although, I’ll say this much about it. It was endearing to see him show such devotion to her to the point that he was willing to give her his actual heart.
I appreciated how the author showed the magnitude of sorrow the snow queen carried with her from having to bring about her past grooms’ deaths. I became sympathetic towards the Snow Queen when I got a sense of how her pain has emotionally wounded her with so much heartache.
Lastly I’d like to point out something really cool. The author gives us closure with the supporting characters by answering the question “what happened to that character?” that we sometimes ask in a book.
I loved this book especially for its creativity, character insight and a very happy ending.

📚 This Thawed Heart by Jes Drew- ARC review
Releasing on December 1st, 2025

Thank you to BookSirens and Jes Drew for providing me with an ARC in exchange for an honest review. 🖤

This book started somewhere in the middle for me, as the chapters went on things started to make more sense especially as the past and present began to intertwine.

It was an easy read and simple to follow but at times it felt a bit overloaded. The mix of Romeo & Juliet, The Snow Queen, and other worldly elements such as werewolves and vampires made the story feel crowded. I think it could have worked better with just one or two of those fairytale influences instead of all at once.

The writing was poetic and I really loved Isak’s character. There’s something so compelling about a man who aches with emotion. As the story progressed, I found myself wanting to read more, even if I wasn’t entirely in love with how all different story elements blended together.

Overall, a beautifully written story but slightly too ambitious in its mix of myths and magic. ⭐️⭐️⭐️/5

Wow, even though this is a Romeo and Juliet retelling, this story is actually quite an original spin to it. This is an inspired continuation of Romeo and Juliet verses a retelling, with a magical twist. Curses, illegitimate heirs, family secrets, monsters, madness… this very short book definitely packs quite the vicious punch!

I enjoy how Juliet was reimagined as a Snow Queen cursed to relive the tragedy of the original Romeo and Juliet past with Prince (aka Isak). But wait, not only is a she a vampire with a frozen heart, her recollection of her past not what it seems but causing her to hate her beloved.

Meanwhile, Romeo is the soft-hearted likeable Isak, a madman who dreams of the Snow Queen night and day, day and night. He's "cursed", obsessed with his beloved Snow Queen, so when he as the chance to meet his beloved, he is either doomed to repeat past or will get a redo for his happily ever after.

One hundred years ago, the Snow Queen was betrayed by her love. Ever since, she has been trying to undo the curse, but the spell requires a willing bridegroom on the night of the Blue Moon. When a mysterious man who resembles her first love presents himself as a more than willing bridegroom, the queen decides to take the risk. But Prince is more than he seems, and soon both of their pasts become too important to ignore.

This Thawed Heart is a truly creative tale with an interesting vampiric twist on both the classic Romeo and Juliet, and the origin of the Snow Queen fairy tale. The Snow Queen is a surprisingly sympathetic character with her traumatic past but dedication to undoing the curse. She is rather cold, but Prince balances her out with his chaotically cheerful and hopeful characterization. His confident dedication to loving her slowly erodes her barriers until she finally opens herself up to love.

A remarkably heartwarming story with a plenty heartless characters.

A curse borne from a betrayal and misunderstanding weathers the test of time. The Snow Queen we met in This Frozen Heart does have a heart after all. And not just any heart. One that can thaw. While the first book wasn’t my favorite, This Thawed Heart captured my attention immediately. I devoured it searching for the clues that explained the characters’ backgrounds. The characters in this book are fantastic. I appreciated that the plot moved at a good pace that allowed plenty of story progression as well as character development. I liked that the book managed to surprise me many times with how certain events played out. Love comes in many different forms, but only a timeless love can break a timeless curse. Excellent read!

No swear words are used in the book. Like most of the books I have read so far by Jes Drew, the romantic element is on the more intimate side of no-spice. Romantically, the Snow Queen and Prince share intense kisses, make-out sessions, and references to intimacy, but everything is still closed-door or fade-to-black, so the book is still clean.

I love retellings and what better romance than an enemies to lovers with Romeo & Juliet elements! Many years ago, the Snow Queen was betrayed by her love. With an opportunity to break her curse, she finds herself looking for someone to agree to be her bridegroom. With a reputation that her previous marriages end in tragedy, this is easier said than done. What she didn't expect was that the only man who would agree happens to look like her first love and the one who shattered her heart, but in the end, Prince only wants the Snow Queen and will do everything he can to win her heart and keep his own beating in the process. This was a fantastic read from start to finish! I look forward checking out more by this author!

A fantasy version of Romeo and Juliette, with a unique twist.

I had fun reading this retelling. And found the spin on the original, refreshing and fun. I must say that I did see the plot twists coming from miles away and was sometimes thrown off a bit by the unique wording. I believe many of these words to be old English, as I am dutch, they were not known to me, so I had to use the vocabulary quite a few times.

Still I enjoyed this read and would like to thank the author for this ARC opportunity.

This is an original story about the Snow Queen on par with KM Shea's Snow Queen Saga. I really like how the author interwove that origin story with the truly unusual second chance romance. This was a very different take on vampire romance that really tugged my heartstrings. Lots of originality and unusual curses in this tale make it a captivating (no puns intended) read and great for people who like to say "what if" and love HEAs.

Closed-door romance / No spice 🌶 ❌️

A truly lovely twist in the large number of Romeo and Juliet's famous love story retellings.

I was a bit confused yet intrigued for the first 40-ish pages, but then I was so hooked I couldn't put it down before I finished reading it in one go !

If you want a romantasy retelling of Romeo&Juliet with vampires, curses, betrayals, found family, and the one and only true love, I would definitely recommend it !

Thank you to Jes Drew and Book Sirens for the opportunity to get this ARC 🙏

Perfect from start to finish. It was a mix of Romeo and Juliet and the Snow Queen tale. A different twist on it at least. I love Prince and Snow! They are perfect for each other betrayals and all. They work. It broke my heart all Snow suffered. Every year she had to suffer without her heart. There is so much to unravel and say about their story but I cant without giving insane spoilers. I will say I love how it all worked out. It was for the best. Now I wonder if Viktor will try and take revenge, what Wolf's deal is, and how it will affect Tobias and others.

A twist on a classic read that kept you on your toes!
Who’d ‘ave thunk…? Romeo and Juliet with vampires! Throughout the book, there were additional epilogues that kept you guessing about what was going to happen next. This Thawed Heart was a clean fantasy tale and is must read for those who love a dramatic tale! Very easy to follow along, and there is such a good plot!!.

I really liked this book! It starts a little slow but picks up quickly. I enjoyed peering into the MCs’ pasts just enough to inform the present until we are given the whole picture. I liked how the story was different enough from Romeo and Juliet that it stands alone—I also really liked the inclusion of the magic systems and how that tied in to the love story!

A Romeo & Juliet like no other!

The Snow Queen returns as the main character this time and now she has the cursed Prince as her newest bridegroom! This story is intense with heavy themes and yet so wonderfully woven through with humor and lighthearted moments that really warm you up to all the characters. The twists just kept coming! To the very end! Loved this story and can’t wait for more in this world!

Jes truly delivered a masterpiece with this one! I so wanted to know the Snow Queen and Isak’s story. I loved her take on Romeo and Juliet, and even though they died, they lived on and got a second chance. My heart broke for Sunniva and Isak, and swelled when they fell for each other again. And little Tobias! I’m very concerned about Wolf and how she’ll influence Viktor. I can’t wait for the next book!

Who’d ‘ave thunk…? Romeo and Juliet with vampires! This clean fantasy with kingdoms being fought over with a war had the dramatic tale on a much larger scale! I’m not sure if I loved it, but it was definitely interesting, and I did love the ending! There were even extra epilogues, which gave a hint of what maybe coming next!

This was a really interesting retelling. As usual Jes Drew's writing was fantastic. I will say Im not the biggest fan of vampire creatures and probably would have passed if I had realized there were vampires in this book. With that being said, the world building and attention to detail is fantastic.

A Romeo and Juliet retelling that picks up around where This Frozen Heart left off. Oh, this one was twisty. Between flashbacks that hinted that something more was happening to the Snow Queen trying so hard not to fall in love again, I thoroughly enjoyed everything this little story had to offer.

Let me tell you, Jes Drew is my favorite author for a REASON.

Ever since reading This Frozen Heart, I've been waiting for Prince's love story with The Snow Queen (I won't give away their real names in this review). And this book, it has been my favorite book of hers so far. The layers and emotional depth of the characters were phenomenal. This book was a rollercoaster of emotions, though, so be prepared. Things were escalating halfway through and I was thinking in my head, "if this is the halfway point, what is *worse* than this that will pop up at the end?" They won that happily ever after after all of that. The worldbuilding was amazing too as the descriptions made me feel like I was actually in the Snow Queen's palace and Gaelia. Overall I loved this book and would re-read a thousand times over.

P.S
I don't listen to audiobooks because I like to imagine their voices for myself and pace the story my way but I would totally listen to an audiobook version of this.

Thank you for the ARC and letting me be apart of The Royal Spies.
