Studying magic, an intoxicating princess, and a devoted wife encouraging him to explore everything the academy has to offer...
For my wife, Isabelle, I gave up my dream of becoming a mage. A price I paid gladly. But now, years into our loving marriage, she’s the one pushing me to attend the Academy.
This is where the queendom's elite hone their power. I expected the disdain of the nobles for a commoner like me. I did not expect the Academy’s greatest challenge.
And that challenge has a Lucretia. She’s the Crown Princess. Blonde, blue-eyed, and fair-skinned. Perfect, they say. I can't disagree.
So why are her eyes fixed on me?
She's young, powerful, and untouched, but above all she's not used to being denied. She sees something in me that she's determined to possess, and the simple gold band on my finger won't stand in her way.
But the perfect princess isn't my only danger. There's my own loving wife, encouraging me to explore everything the academy has to offer—temptations included. And then there’s Juliet, the dark-haired heiress with her own claim on the future queen.
Now I’m trapped between my devotion to the mother of our daughter, the intoxicating obsession of a princess who is determined to have me, and a dangerous rival who wants me gone.
MC is a woman overlaid with select, copy-pasted masculine qualities
Spoilers throughout.
This is a well-written book, with decent pacing. It's a little slow on the magic system, which I found wasn't important to the plot anyway, and in some of the lovey/reassuring dialogue between MC and wife.
My real objections are as an admittedly misogynistic reader of male power fantasies. Outside of that context I'm more reasonable, but for escapist content I get a little cranky.
I found MC to be meek and weak-willed. While he is attractive, with “non-toxic” masculine qualities, such as being responsible, loving, and putting his family first, it's always from a position of weakness and fear. Yes he's a commoner at the mercy of nobles, but he takes it lying down.
He's a pleaser and a compromiser. Arguably a coward. A follower. He's reactive, not proactive. He gets magically smacked around by children. He's easily tempted.
He pines for his wife incessantly, but feels temptation, then guilt, which doesn't stop him from cheating on her in fits and starts. And he does it with a hefty dose of feminine denial and false protest. Swap the genders and the whole “I can't, I'm married” on repeat, every time he's flustered by the beautiful princess, just makes so much more sense.
So this book doesn't really work as a reader-insert male fantasy. Yes, it's nice that he's getting some action, but he doesn't look cool doing it. Ultimately I think this story is a bisexual woman’s cuckquean fantasy, which just happens to be written from a two-dimensional wet blanket of a man’s pov.
As far as MC being the object of desire, there's a lot of "soft feminist" virtue signalling going on. In the real world, the biggest, most confident, most physical, most dominant man in the room always has his pick. Big dick energy. Actual big dick. The bully gets the cheerleader. The bad boy gets the debutante.
Women tend to deny this when talking to men, and many of them actually believe it's not true. But we've all experienced the reality.
So, yeah, MC comes off as the safe, sensitive guy a woman might settle with in her 30s. One who treasures her because he knows she's out of his league (but is also handsome and well hung, because it's fantasy). His relationships don't fit that picture at all though, because the women in his life are just unrealistically smitten with him.
Yes, he's attractive and a nice guy, but that doesn't come close to explaining his popularity. At least not to my cynical ass.
Anyway, guys: This *is* written for you, but only because author believes inserting yourself into this simp’s shoes is something men will enjoy. That it's worth being kind of pathetic if you get to have a big dick and maybe some polyamorous princess p*ssy. I'll give her the big dick part. Ok, and the princess.. But *not* the simp thing. Ymmv.
Btw “Sweetie” as his wife's pet name for him is just cringe. “Use me like a wh*re,” one minute, then “Sweetie” the next. Just no.
Top thing I did like: Unashamedly bisexual women (verging on total lesbian, in one case). I absolutely loathe the alternative in harem fantasies. One guy and three straight women, but everyone's happy with the arrangement? Pfft.
Anyway, the author is a woman and it shows. But so does her appreciation of women. The noblewomen are written really well (oozing sexuality) and the wife's kink is hot, but MC is just not inspirational. I'll check out the second book because I'm not a quitter, but have minimal expectations.
MC is a commoner coming to a magic school. he gets harrassed but also the two top dog that are a love couple take an interest in him while he tries to stay faithful to his wife that supports him in every way and is open for him to have more love interests. Meanwhile one of the girls gets jealous on the other one. Interesting concept an some problems have no easy solution - I prefer that to 100% everything falling in the MCs lap.
I have read a lot of books before will suspense and tension. But nothing like this. I put this book down and picked it up again and again, often within moments of each other. I wanted to know and didn't want to know what was going to happen next, over and over. Really good book, but I feel like a wreck after lol 😆.
Saw a lot of praise elsewhere for this somewhat hetero polycule book, and while initially engaging, it lost me along the way for many reasons. The biggest problem being the wife, who is Madonna–whore synthesis personified, where she allows everything and has no goals or personality of her own. A whore in the sheets, a saint on the streets and nothing else.
Then is the MC himself, who is not only a husband but a father and, in a 1950s fashion, parents his daughter about once in the 377 pages of this book and spends the rest of his time fantasizing about virginal schoolgirls, his lusty wife, grinding magic books or being generally absent. This has to be about some weird male fantasy of being a father of a girl without actually being a parent? Or about being a provider which somehow equals being an absent father? Lots of mixed messages in general. (He also never provides. Potential worst father of the year award recepient. )
Then the princess and her lesbian lover, who gets promptly discarded as MC is so irresistible, lesbians are falling over him, sometimes quite literally. I'm sure this has something to do with his magic affinity making him attractive to all female kind, which is heavily implied but not explained. Perhaps in book 2, which I won't be picking up.
I could also see people having issues with the power dynamics, but it's neither here nor there. I won't yuck your yum if that's your thing. Mommy can step on you. Or a virginal goth girly in this case.
Personally, I didn't particularly enjoy the aristocracy/commoner abuse. Noblesse oblige is nowhere to be found here. And this again signals some weird underdog/loser rejected by everyone getting perhaps not all, but certainly the most powerful and beautiful women in the kingdom just for existing in the same space.
Then the weird sister interlude where she is described as beautiful, and she doesn't want to marry anyone but her brother!? And then is promptly forgotten as soon as she appeared. Will the princess acquire the sister too? It's getting all incest up in here... Or perhaps just a quick ego stroke, all women must love MC in this book, perhaps that's all the sister character was put on the page for.
I could sum up this read as a collection of juvenile male fantasies that don't go deeper than a surface level on any one topic but the magic system, which is somewhat interesting, but as a book that mainly deals with relationships it falls on its face.
I also suspect it's heavily assisted by AI tools like ChatGPT. There's only so many times I can read "not just x, but y", that I start to see common patterns. And the sex scenes don't quite keep up with the average quality of the rest of the writing, which would track since ChatGPT generally can't assist with those. The lack of detail in relationships and character building also tracks with this theory.
I don't particularly mind AI edited writing, if the final product comes out better and makes the indie business more viable, but it's annoying when it's obvious.
You can definitely tell this one's coming from a different direction, but in a good way.
The magic: While not deeply explored, it shows unseen depths. It's based on logical systems enough that I feel like I understand most of it despite the lack of focus on the magic system. It was fun, and I hope to see more of it.
Culture and characters: Most characters feel real enough. Sometimes, it even brushes against the everyday mundane in how real they react and think. While set in a magical medieval setting, you can see the more modern influences here and there, especially in his home village. His family and their quirks feel modern. But I'm OK with that. (Other things usually involve cultural proclivaties being affected by the era's technology and who can access it. These were minor and mostly not worth mentioning at all. Hence, why an example escapes me. :-P )
One thing I really appreciated was the one bully, who was a coward. So many stories have them bravely holding onto their pride to the bitter end. If they weren't cowards, they wouldn't have to find someone weak and isolated to antagonize. (Though many a fool do foolish things for foolish reasons.)
Romance: I enjoyed how loving and committed he and his wife are with each other. There were a lot of interesting dynamics involving the MC being imperfect and human but holding on as best he can to what he values. Definitely more emotion and depth than many a harem tale. I'm still undecided if I like it overall, but most of what I've read shows promise. I do hope and wish for that happy family outcome; whatever that looks like here.
(I found myself almost screaming at the MC that one character needs to be reassured and feel secure, but *sigh* he never heard me...)
DNF@50%. The story was pretty interesting in the beginning, but the multiple times that the saccharine 100% love of the MC and his wife was mentioned made me lookup the author name, which leads me to think the author is a woman. Possibly a woman writing out her wishful thinking of a dirty story, and hey, why not, plenty of males doing the same. But this one is not for me.
Plot holes galore: Princesses who speak to commoners AND like them. Why did he stay with his wife exactly in the beginning, for what reason? What do he and his wife actually *DO* in their little village? You can't just 'live' there and do nothing, so you have to work. You are part of a structure in a village. But that is never explained. Suddenly the wife deciding to move to the city. How easy it is to move to the city and leave everything behind. Money? Hardly spoken of except that he is poor. Not how he solves it. The sister who never married and seems 'into' him... what is this, a visual novel where women throw themselves at the MC?
What clashes the most is the daughter: she is clearly seen as just a plot item - I'm a father and that just rubs me the wrong way.
I kept reading the book hoping to learn more about the viewpoint of a woman on how a male behaves or should behave. But in the end I gave up at 50%.
I dislike this beta male who only thinks of young hot women but seems to forget he has a daughter for which he is responsible and who is only mentioned or talked to once before being placed with his parents.
This is why I read books. To experience actions and emotions that I will never have in my own life. It is not a dark book, but it is gritty with emotions. Everything rings true around the story. The MC is a commoner in a world of nobles. Truly powerless to their actions, not because of a cliche, but because of the reality of the situation. It feels like there is no plot armor, just reality and emotion. He is not a simp. He has pride in himself, but has to constantly swallow it. Meanwhile his love for his wife blazes throughout the whole story.
The emotions this book has made me feel... I almost stopped reading a quarter of the way through because of the way he is sometimes treated and how powerless he is in some situations. But he always acts with maturity. We'll, when his emotions don't get the better of him. It gets a little better, enough to ease the stress, but never disappears. Meanwhile, he is constantly tempted, and mostly prevails over said temptations.
I felt like I was going through everything with the MC, and at one point near the end I actually sobbed, which embarrassed me a little even though I was alone. The ending was perfect, filled with passion and love and a hopeful look towards what comes next.
Got this on KU, but my next step is to buy it and find out more about the author.
Very different from others in the genre in how real everything felt. You need to read this! Trust the author to get you through the rough time, because anything worthwhile takes work and a little bit of pain.
This book has a harem tag on it. I picked it up expecting a typical sort of harem fantasy with a likable (or not) alpha male with steadily increasing power and a steadily growing harem. But this is definitely not that. There is no focus on growing power, or fighting a big bad, it's basically all drama, drama, more drama and one incredibly thirsty wife. Now admittedly, this book doesn't advertise itself as anything else, i guess i was just expecting, you know, some likeness to harem fantasy as i've come to know it.
If anything though, this is more like a harem story with the mask removed, showing the true face of harem. That being, not a group of girls all in love with the MC and all getting along with each other, but rather women and drama that increases logarithmicly the more women you add to the equation. As a sigma male, this book is complete anathema to me. All the drama and unnecessary bother, if i was in MC's shoes, i would have told those girls to take a hike after chapter 3. And that wife, damn girl, slow your roll. Pretty much her entire dialogue the whole book is about getting laid. smh. I've never read a women's romance novel, but i'm assuming this is what they are like, way too much sex and drama and no real plot concerning anything else. Which is fine, but it's definitely not for me. I couldn't wait for this book to end.
The main character is headed in the direction of taking the future Queens virginity.even though he is in love.with his wife who.acts like.a.round heel slut for.her husband in bed . The wife also. Likes.women as.does.the Princes but the only thing I did not like is the Princes has a woman partner who has served the queen to.be in future since they we're young and she is extremely jealous and verbally, emotionally , physically and with any manner she can come up with totally craps.!almover.the male main charactor and has called his wife a whore whiile. He has to sit there and Put up.with a jealous immature bitch with no.recourse .. I have no.problem with Harem.stories but this includes a husband who is being driven to.cheating g on his wife even though his wife in her kink tells.the husband to do as he must . The story is well.written ,there are few characters bit they are described in depth and like any good story That is well written and interesting there hopefully will be book 2 ,3 and how many others to.finished the story
If you consume a lot of this genre, you see a lot of the same storytelling format and plot style when it comes to romance. It’s not a bad thing but it’s rare to see the foundation changed. This story does an excellent job of changing it up and having a different approach with him being married with the husband/wife dynamic. I loved their relationship and their love for each other with all the “I love you” and everything that came with it. The other supporting characters were interesting and complex, with the other relationships adding a lot of depth to the story. It’s going to be one of my favorite recently released series to date at this rate.
The book does have some grammar problems and the flow of some sentences/paragraphs feels off. There are a couple parts that are choppy and don’t blend well. And while it does hurt the story a bit l’ll chalk it up to inexperience. Either way it’s a great start and worth the recommendation.
DNF @ 36%. The description of the book is pretty much a lie and very inaccurate. Sure, Commoner mage who is married is going off to the academy to learn. Yes, while attending, he meets the princess....that's about where it deviates. I went into this book expecting a decent harem romance with one of my favorite tropes, social class difference, or forbidden love, and in return got something else entirely. With this set up, it's pretty obvious this is a polycule harem, and it'll be centered on the princess, not the MMC. No thanks, will not continue.
This book went way deeper emotionally than I thought it would. Isabella is such a unique character, and I loved how she's flips from being super submissive to possessive. She is almost a Yandere without the stalking and murder haha. All the characters are fantastically well written. It was kinda confusing how our primary antagonist just kinda fell away after the dance, I understand our MC was under the princesses "protection," but to not have any more encounters was kinda strange. I did not mind it because there was plenty or other drama going on between the two noble girls, but hopefully, we get more of conflict with the noble boy in the next book. At the same time screw that guy, and hopefully, we never see him again, lol. Also, I'm probably going to rage if nobles come after our MCs family in any way because his wife and their daughter are saints and should be protected at all costs!
This obe was a suprise. I thought generic magic academy protagonist heram when I picked it up. It has far more interesting "magical education " and the mc has continued to actually act as if he is smart enough to be there studying magic. Also alot more explicitly sexual imagery and language than normally in a heram romance where it starts off slow burn seeing up. The relationship dynamics are such that i am still not quite sure the direction the story could be taken as several tropes have been subverted already. I have lots of interesting theories about the women pursuing him at school yet all are very spoilers and theoretical at this point in the negative. Suffice it to say it belive not everything is as it is portrayed and I look forward to finding out more in the next book.
Ok so I like the plot but I really think it was done very poorly. The way this is written makes the Male MC seem like a spineless weak willed coward that gets bullied and says Thank you may I have another. So he is a married man that has a daughter goes to school gets in a situationship with to females that are way more powerful than him, gets walked all over by them and has his personal privacy violated so bad he gets soo pissed he litteraly almost kills himself on accident. Wakes up 2 days later and literally thanks one of them. The other one gets pissed off at him cause he is so far below her he should thank her for allowing him the privilege to breath. Yet he goes about business as usual...... even though they are the reason he almost left his wife and kid to fend for themselves...... permanently. He is honestly disgusting.
Congratulations to Emily Sinfall for her debut novel (guess it's her first) I was really impressed by it: theme is really original. Ex cellentstory and the characters are well written While, technically speaking it is not (yet) a harem novel (barring a quick BJ near the end), the plotline is unusual (the MC being an happy-married man and father who would never envision cheating by book's start). Now, allow me to predict what will come next: current story will develop into 2 or 3 sequels, where the harem will expand, first with Lucretia (already engaged), followed by Juliet along with Elara (guess who will be first?)
I strongly recommend it, and urge the author to deliver the sequel(s) as soon as she can write.

I think this book deserves 5 stars. I enjoyed reading this one but it was different from a lot of other books with similar stories. This one focused heavily on the relationships between the characters. There was also a good amount of explanation on how magic works in the world and the mechanics of the academy. I would like to learn more about how magic is used in the wiser world. But the focus is most definitely the relationships between the main character and the women around him. Beyond that there isn’t actually much else going on. Now that the relation ships have been solidly formed we can see more plot points develop. I will definitely give book two a read when it comes out.
I would not recommend this book to anyone. Instead of writing a huge block of text detailing what I didnt like, I'll simply state that everything about this book is strikingly bad, except the following: The MC and the two women he is involved with are well characterized, their relationship is interesting, complicated and humane, although this happens in the second half. I became attached to these 3 characters (only these 3) and would actually read a sequel only for the sole purpose of finding out what happens to them (also the reason why I rated 2 stars instead of 1). This stands in stark contrast with literally everything else. I guess the sexual tension between the MC and one of the women is well built, but it isnt enough to carry the rest of the book.
First of all, I am a very old man. I hope my opinion will be welcome. The characters are vivid, the plot is easily followed and the premise is, as I see it, a commoner trying his best to survive among nobles and yet learning to be an excellent mage. The complications come when the crown princess, herself develops an attraction to Rowan, the main character. What is surprising and rather gratifying is how his wife Isabelle reacts to his conundrum. I would have felt as guilty as he does, yet she showed him in various ways just how much she loves him and wants him to continue. That shows me a love I will never have and although I am jealous, I am also glad for the ones involved. I definitely highly recommend this book and look forward to more of this author's works.
Someone posted about this book getting an audio release recently and I picked it up for the wild premise promised in the description. The craziness on offer is beyond even that in a good way watching a good loyal man deal with impossible situations and pressures as a commoner in the circles of nobles. His loving wife and the other beautiful women mentioned all have rich characters that get shown in bits and pieces as the story progresses, and Rowan's determination is great. It will be interesting to see if he becomes a renowned artist or paints ladies like his French girls, but the story has been fascinating so far and I can't wait for more
I like the magic school premise, but the rest not so much
I love the idea of a guy going back to magic school after building a family, I think that part of the story is awesome. The only part i have a problem with is all of the "i love you" and "I love you so much" over and over and over. I made it to page 170, and I swear it was said 300 times. It gets real old, real quick. Sorry, I just can't read the rest. But I'm not going to give it less than 4 stars, the story premise is amazing it just needs some ironing out with the writing.
I enjoyed the overall storyline and thought the premise was engaging. The characters and plot kept me interested, and I’m glad I finished the first book. That said, the romance content was far more explicit than I expected, and the frequency and level of detail in the intimate scenes pulled me out of the story. If you enjoy very steamy reads, this may be a great fit. For me, it was simply more graphic than I prefer, so I won’t be continuing with the rest of the series.
Harry, eat your heart out. This is a magic school for adults. Mature situations mixed with a college atmosphere and magic. Main character is older with a wife and small girl who discovers his magic power growing later in life. Of course he would become involved with a princess and get into intrigue beyond his small village experience. The story involves his growth over his first year as a magician, a more experienced person, and involvement with the princess. Eager to read next book.
This is by far the most unique entry in this genre in a long time. It’s just so different and very well written. It brings in certain twists and hits a niche I didn’t k ow existed. The characters are just so well fleshed out. The spicy scenes are so well written and not cringey. I can’t say enough good things about this book. I hope we see a second soon.
Was pleasantly surprised with this book, went in not knowing what to expect since this was a debut book but I can say with my whole heart after reading this masterpiece was written with heart and dedication. characters that felt real, the drama, the angst, the romance, just all of it it put together made this a 10/10 book imo. I would love to read the sequel soon as it’s ready
This book is one of the best first time author books I have had the honor of reading. I loved Isabelle character and could definitely understand the pain and jealousy some other characters had in the story. The magic parts and learning of the magic were well written however for me I wish there was more focus on the Mc magick increasing. I loved the story and I am eagerly awaiting a longer sequel!
Enjoyed reading this, good effort for it being your first published book. Especially liked that this wasn’t like a majority of the harem books that all seem to be a cookie cutter copy of each other with a few minor plot changes. A few grammar and spelling mistakes but overall, less than I usually see of books from this genre. Hope the second book is a good as the first.
I bet his wife loved that he left so she could plow the rest of the town without having him whine and love bomb her into ridiculousness. Then with everything going on you start simping... one line the mc complains about some guy hitting on the princess chick only to say that he feels angry because he also is attracted to her, even though seconds prior he was thinking about how they had nothing in common.
Great new series. Fresh take on some old classic tropes this book might be slow burn, but it delivers. New creative take on world building and a different take on magic. Definitely looking forward to the follow up. 5 star rating is well deserved, absolutely looking forward to more from this new author.
This was a fascinating read. A lot more spicy scenes compared to what I usually read. You can easily skip a few of them if you like. My personal pros in this are: Magical world, academic setting, interesting love interest. Cons: Too many spicy scenes, could user an editor, conflicts being easily resolved.
