Liz Lawler had a 20-year career as a nurse and later became a general manager of a five star hotel, followed by a stint as a flight attendant with British Airways. Born in Kent, Liz was part of a large family having 11 siblings. She discovered the solitude of writing, after coming home from a busy nightshift in the emergency department, was a place where she could step away from an emotionally and physically demanding job. She now lives in Bath with her family and writes in any place that has a quiet space.
An intriguing prologue sets up the scene of an attack in an alley.
There is no doubt in Kate's mind that her husband, Mark, is not a murderer, but why is he being secretive about where he was that night then? Robert is Mark's bff and co-pilot. When Mark is questioned about a woman killed while they were in Barcelona he steps in to help Kate care for her son, Jacob, along with his friend, Olivia.
You'd think that since Kate is a doctor that she'd make some smart choices, NOPE. She makes some pretty bad ones and you'll just want to yell at her quite a few times.
Overall, it moved along at a steady pace for me. It was pretty action packed at the end there and I was on the edge of my seat, but come on with the police at the 85% mark? What they did is highly unlikely.
Narration notes: Gabrielle did a superb job. Totally frantic when she needed to be.
*Thanks to the author, Bookouture Audio and NetGalley for the audiobook. I am voluntarily leaving my honest review*
Kate loves her husband but is he capable of murder? Mark appears to be a loving husband and father. The idea of him being a killer is something Kate can't wrap her mind around. This thriller is full of twists and turns that kept me guessing. The narration of the audiobook masterfully brought the characters to life while adding a layer of suspense. there were times, when I thought I knew where the story was heading, but a new twist would lead the plot in an unexpected direction. Entertaining, intriguing, and engaging describe this twisted tale of deception and betrayal. Thank you, NetGalley and Bookouture Audio for my audiobook.
I watch the clock anxiously. My husband, Mark, should have been home hours ago. Where is he? When at last I hear a noise at the door, I breathe a sigh of relief, but it's the police - Mark is wanted in connection with a young woman's death. My blood turns to ice. Mark swears he had nothing to do with it, that the beautiful blonde woman was a colleague, nothing more. But he refuses to tell me where he really was that night. I believe he's not a killer - bit I know he's hiding something. It wouldn't be the first time.
This is a well-written, edge of your seat read. I was pulled in at the beginning, and it did not let me go again until the end. The story is told from Kate's perspective. The pace is perfectly set. There's quite a lot going on in this book, but it all has a relevant part to play. I couldn't turn the pages quick enough, desperate to know if Mark was guilty. This story is filled with lies and deceit.
I would like to thank #NetGalley #Bookouture and the author #LizLawler for my ARC of #MyHusbandsLies in exchange for an honest review.
I listened to the audiobook of this one and I did really think the narrator did a great job, I know domestic thrillers can start to feel similar or follow patterns, but I felt like this one was a bit more predictable than it needed to be. The main character, Kate, was one of those protagonists that you spend the whole time wanting to shake and yell at since she seemed almost trying ti ignore all of the red flags around her. Overall it wasn’t a bad story, i just wanted a little more from the protagonist. Kate is horrified when she learns that her husband Mark is a suspect in a murder and the worst part is that he won’t tell her where he was during the crime. Just before Mark can be arrested he is hit by a car and hospitalized. When Mark’s best friend and coworker, Robert, brings another colleague Olivia, to help Kate can’t say no since she feels overwhelmed. Soon Olivia is living in her home and taking care of her 5 year old son Jacob full time, Overall I gave this one 3.5 stars rounded down for the sheer volume of the times I wanted to throw my phone down when Kate was too dumb.
Enjoyed the narration and she did an excellent job.
Told mainly from Kate’s perspective with a few chapters from family friend Robert. Kate’s husband Mark is a pilot and is being questioned by police for a murder that happened in Barcelona but Kate just doesn’t feel he could be involved and goes to extremes to help prove his innocence. Before mark can answer many questions about the event he is struck in a hit and run, ends up in ICU. Kate accepts help from Olivia a co worker of Marks after long time family friend Robert vouches for her. Did find this strange, I’m not leaving my child with someone without knowing more about them, Kate’s naivety and gullibility were problems throughout the story for sure. Kate’s mother tries to warn her about Olivia but Kate doesn’t listen. Enjoyed listening and would listen to more by the author.
Thanks to Netgalley and Bookouture audio for my advanced reader copy in exchange for my honest review. All opinions are my own.
I really enjoyed the beginning but in the middle and the end it felt like two completely different storylines competing that tied together very loosely to make an overall story. Another middle of the road book!
Kate is an ICU doctor and is shocked when she arrives home after a long shift to find detectives on her doorstep looking for her husband, Mark. He is an airline pilot who is returning from a work trip to Barcelona where a horrible tragedy has happened, one of his former coworkers was murdered and he has been named as a suspect. Kate believes there is no way that Mark would ever be involved in something so violent regardless of how distant he has been acting. Before he can defend himself he is hit by a car, landing in Kate's ICU, in a coma. Kate is overwhelmed and beside herself when Robert, Mark's co-pilot, and Olivia, a cabin crewmate, show up at her house and step in to care for Kate's son Jacob. Olivia eventually moves in so she be around any time, allowing Kate flexibility to be at the hospital. With Olivia caring for her son and house Kate sets out to prove Mark's innocence but the lies and killer could be closer than she ever thought possible.
"My Husband's Lies" by Liz Lawler is a book that started with great promise, but as I continued reading, I found myself wrestling with conflicting feelings. The novel introduces us to Kate, the central character, and from the outset, her actions and reactions raised some questions. For instance, the idea of someone entering your home and rearranging your furniture should naturally evoke a sense of intrusion and outrage unless, of course, it was a service you had requested. Kate's oddly muted response to this situation struck me as a bit unrealistic. The story revolves around Kate's concern for her son's safety, which is a fundamental theme. Yet, her response to this concern was puzzling. Instead of immediately prioritising her son's well-being and ensuring his safety, she embarks on a curious journey of playing detective, leaving her child in a potentially hazardous situation. This choice seemed contrary to her maternal instincts, and it frustrated me as a reader. What bothered me most was Kate's passivity throughout the story. She appeared to allow events to unfold around her rather than taking charge of her own life. This passiveness contributed to my growing impatience with her character. I found myself yearning for her to display more agency and take control of the circumstances. As the story progressed, the plot took some rather implausible and far-fetched turns, which strained the boundaries of credibility. This departure from a more grounded and believable narrative left me feeling disconnected from the outcome. I found it challenging to invest emotionally in the story as it ventured into territory that seemed increasingly removed from reality. In conclusion, "My Husband's Lies" was a book that held potential with its initial premise but fell short of my expectations due to the inconsistencies in character behaviour and the increasingly unbelievable plot. The two-star rating reflects my overall disappointment with the book, as I was left wanting more from a story that could have been more engaging and relatable had it adhered to a more logical and plausible narrative.
Thank you to NetGalley for the opportunity to read the ARC (Advance Reader Copy) of My Husband's Lies by Liz Lawler. This book was well written and it kept me intrigued throughout. It started strong and stayed that way until I finished the book. I really enjoyed this one so much that I now want to read some other books by this author. The ending was not anticipated as I read the book. I would definitely recommend this book to others for it's great entertainment value. I gave it a 4 star rating.
The blurb sets the story perfectly kates husband is accused of a terrible crime. The thing is he us lying about where he was on the night in question and Kate can't work out the truth. Told from kate"s pov the pace of the story is perfectly paced. Additional characters are added which gives you depth and red herrings and twists and turns. Some of which were omg monents. A couple were unbelievable to the point o had to take a break. The story was very believable and all the characters were well written. The pov telling gave it a greater emotional impact and tge interactions with other characters more realistic. I especially loved the interactions over oliviaas other characters voiced my own concerns. The final act blrw me away but the loose ends seemed too quickly tied up. Overall a fab 5 star read. Thank you netgallery and publisher and author.
I requested an audio advanced readers copy from NetGalley and Bookouture Audio and providing my opinion voluntarily and unbiased.
Synopsis: The police are coming, they’re going to arrest me.’ My blood runs cold at his words. My husband is accused of murder. He swears he is innocent – so why won’t he tell me where he really was that night?
I feel so lucky to have my handsome husband Mark and our blue-eyed little boy. Everyone says we’re the perfect family. I used to believe them.
But everything changes when Mark comes home from a work trip with dark circles under his eyes. That night I jump at a hammering at the door. The police want to question him about the murder of a beautiful, blonde young woman. Mark swears he had nothing to do with it, that she was a colleague, nothing more.
Mark is a respected airline pilot, and the model husband and father. It seems impossible that he would be involved in something like this. But he won’t say a word about where he really was. I believe that he’s not a killer – but I know he’s hiding something. It wouldn’t be the first time.
Then my husband is attacked. I sit by his hospital bed praying for him to wake up, tears streaming down my face. The police say it’s an accident. But what if someone has done this to him?
I go rigid with fear when I see someone hidden in the garden, watching the house. Are they coming to hurt us too? I’ll do anything to protect my precious little boy – and I have to start by uncovering my husband’s lies...
My Thoughts: This was a compelling, gripping domestic thriller. When a book opens with a bang, you know it will take you along a compelling ride. Kate knows that her husband is not a murderer, although he is being accused of one. Kate does believe that her husband is hiding something but before she can find out what that something is, he is attacked by an unknown person. His best friend, Robert, comes to help her, along with his friend Olivia. While her husband recovers in the hospital, she is against a race to unravel his secrets and find out who actually murdered the young woman in Barcelona. Featuring pilots, a doctor, a murder, secrets, and lies.
This story is narrated solely by Kate, in her perspective. There are some chapters narrated by Robert. Kate was naive, too naive, as a doctor, you would think she would have a level of intelligence but all of that goes out of the window when Olivia (a stranger to her) offers to help her with Jacob (their son) so she is not so overwhelmed. Robert, Mark’s best friend and co-pilot, helps initially but then falls off the map for a bit. While I did not agree with some of Kate’s decisions, I understood them. The characters were well developed with depth, mysterious, creative, and intriguing. The author’s writing style was complex, suspenseful, twisty, and kept me invested from the first word to the last word. The prologue opens up with a bang, then the characters are built up, the plot is delivered in twisty layers, and subplots, and then the ending ties up things nicely. Some of the plot is reaching belief, but that is what makes a good fiction book.
The narrator (Gabrielle Nellis-Pain) was fantastic. Her pitch and speed were spot on. She had great voice variation and brought the characters from the page to my mind and elevated the storyline. The way Gabrielle delivered emotion, especially frantic or desperate scenes was superb, you could really feel that emotion come across. I couldn’t wait until my next listen each time until I finished the audiobook. It was compelling, dark, gripping, secretive, domestic thriller that will keep on your feet. The only con is I would have liked Kate to make some different decisions, to take charge of the circumstance of her life, but that did not alter my enjoyment of the story. I highly recommend picking up today!
Wow!!!! What a tangled web of truths and lies. This book more than pulled me in I was so engrossed in it I couldn't put it down. Characters so spot on and took me to a place that I didn't see coming Loved absolutely everything about this book.
Thanks to the author, the publisher and Netgalley for an early release of this book.
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this UK-based story of tangled webs of lies, filled with lots of twists and turns that kept me interested in reading until the end. This is the first time that I am reading a book by this author and it won't be my last. I would like to thank the author, Netgalley, and Bookouture for this eARC.
Reading Between the Wines book review #135/115(met goal in Sept!) for 2023: Rating: 3 🍷 🍷 🍷 Book: My Husband’s Lies Author: Liz Lawler Available Now!!
Sipping thoughts: Ugh you know those characters that do the opposite of what you want them to and sometimes the opposite of what you are yelling at them to do! This is that book. Kate is a very smart A&E doctor but unfortunately those smarts do not roll over into her personal life to help her make common sense decisions. I enjoyed this book enough but the ending was a little too far from reality, but I still enjoyed it.
Cheers and thank you to @Bookouture, @BookoutureAudio and @Netgalley for an advanced copy of @MyHusbandsLies.
A true tangled web of lies. This book more than pulled me in I was so engrossed in it I couldn't put it down.
The twists and turns did a number on me even though i kind of suspected who the villain was.
The main character was likable but at times i could not get over how naive she was with certain things. So this irritated me. Other than that, i loved this story.
Thank you to bookouture and Netgalley for allowing me to read this story for an honest review
Psychological thriller from Hell! Kate is a doc (in the ER I believe). Her husband Mark is an airline pilot. They have a little boy…and what seems like the perfect life. But one night, while Kate is waiting for Mark to come home, the police arrive instead…wanting to ask him some questions about where he was the night one of his colleagues was murdered?! As Kate starts to put all the pieces together, she begins to doubt her husband…but he’s not capable of murder. Is he?? And then he is involved in an accident. Was it intentional? What is going on??? We meet Mark’s best friend Robert, and what appears to be his girlfriend, Olivia. They are there to help Kate while she is going thru all of this…and to help with her son. But Kate doesn’t really know Olivia…but she does trust Robert. And then we take some weird turns… Some things that I definitely would not have put up with, but maybe, if I was in that situation and really needed the help? Maybe I would… not sure?…
Lots of twists and turns. Many I did not see coming. Some I did.
But the last half hour or so…OMG!!
Thanks to #NetGalley and #Bookouture Audio for an ARC of the audiobook which will be released on November 20th.

This booked pulled me in from the start and kept my attention to the end! So many different twists and turns that I did not see coming. Very well written, entertaining, some edge-of-your-seat moments and great characters!
THANK YOU to the author, Netgalley and Bookouture for this ARC in return for my honest review!
I finished this book and immediately bought 6 copies to take on my birthday weekend with friends. All of my friends love twisty suspense stories and My Husband's Lies had just enough drama to keep me flipping the pages that I knew they'd love it to. Now the husband's on the trip didn't appreciate the title but that's beside the point! If your looking for a fast past suspense book look no further. Kate is a busy ER doctor who loves her job, has a handsome husband who is a pilot, and a young son she adores. Life seems to be everything Kate has always dreamed of for herself...but then the first ball drops. The police show up at her door and Mark is questioned about the murder of a young women in Barcelona where Mark just had a layover. Nothing is adding up and Mark is acting frantic and won't tell Kate what he knows. Second ball drops, Mark ends up in the hospital near death and now Kate sits at her hospital on the other side of bed praying he will recover and speak to the authorities, tell them he had nothing to do with the murder. He didn't right? Kate is surrounded by people she considers friends and their support for her and her son means a lot, but as the days go by Kate is more convinced that no one is being honest with her about what happened and if she wants answers she will need to start looking into it herself. Kate is torn between trusting her husband even though he has a past of not being honest or trusting his best friend who she knows has always wanted her for himself. No matter what the cost Kate won't stop until she knows the truth for her and her son.
Kate is a doctor, a wife, and a mother to a sweet little boy. Her husband, Mark, is a pilot who just got back from a trip only to be accused of murdering a woman. Kate doesn’t know what to believe and Mark is being evasive. While Kate is working and trying to wrap her mind around what is happening, her mom and new found friend tend to her son. Did her husband kill this woman? Is he covering for someone? You’ll have to read to find out.
Narrator - I thoroughly enjoyed listening to the narrator of this audiobook. She had a very pleasant voice and kept me engaged. Her tone matched the circumstances and I’d be happy to listen to a book by her again.
Thank you NetGalley and Bookouture Audio for letting me sample this audiobook in exchange for an honest review.
I loved this book first book I’ve read from this author so glad I did. Kate and Mark have a wonderful marriage with a son but her world comes crashing down when Mark is accused of murder with the help of her friends she tries to prove his innocence but did he really do it ?
There is so much intrigue it takes your breath away. I will definitely be reading her other books,
Wow! What a fantastic read! From that very first chapter I was hooked. I couldn’t wait to find out what had happened. I really believed I had it all figured out but then there was big twists and turns. It really does keep you guessing until the end.
The characters where brilliant, I really felt for the wife. I found myself thinking oh my god what would I do if I was in her shoes. I was honestly frightened for her and felt so sorry for her. I desperately wanted it all to be ok for her. But I could just imagine all the suspicions she had going round and round her head. They where even going round my head as I tried to guess what had happened.
This author sure knows how to write a spectacular psychological thriller and I will first in the queue to read their next books!
Thanks to Netgalley and Bookouture for access to this Arc in exchange for my honest review.
Well, the twists in this book are quite surprising, 99% of them I didn't see coming. It felt a bit slow burn somewhere in. But in the end, it was what I'd call a nice read.
Predictive nonsense! You will instantly know how the story goes from the very start! Kate's husband is accused of murder then gets knocked down in a hit and run and is in a coma! Meanwhile Kate is struggling with childcare and work so ends up letting a stranger, who worked with her husband, move into her house! Absurd! What mother lets a strange woman into her house to look after her child? She never even knew her surname! This woman cleans and cooks for her for free ,baths her son, takes him to school etc. The idiotic mother doesn't think anything is wrong despite her own mother and her best friend saying that this is very odd and telling her to get rid of Olivia. To make matters worse her husband refuses to tell his wife that he is innocent of the murder he was accused of! Then he tells her to stop visiting him at the hospital Why?? Nobody knows!Absolutely unbelievable and ridiculous! I actually laughed at it due to its absurdity! Utter drivel!
I struggled quite a bit with this one. The story started out really well but then I found myself wanting to DNF multiple times as I kept reading. The plotline was too sensational and I found myself rolling my eyes at how unbelievable certain parts were. It also dragged a bit throughout the middle. I seem to be in the minority on this one though so please don't take my review personally if you plan to read it. It could have just been me having a bad day.
Kate is a doctor and she’s married to a pilot named Mark and they have a five-year-old son named Jake who they both love he is seemingly a good man but on his last trip to Monaco an English woman was murdered and it was someone he knew. The interview the whole flight crew including his best friend Robert but Mark is the only one they interview under caution and it’s because they say they have a witness that saw him with the dead girl Lenore. Kate loves her husband and although they had trust issues in the beginning he has really proven himself but with the latest development she doesn’t know what to think. She gets lots of help from her mom but when her mom has health issues right after Mark was hit by a car in his put in the hospital unconscious she is left at loosens until Mark‘s best friend Robert and Olivia offer to take care of Jake while she tends to mark in her other responsibilities at first she is hesitant because she doesn’t know Olivia and Robert is a playboy but when he gives his word he will be careful when tending to Jake Kate agrees. Kate is worried that when Mark wakes up he will be arrested but little does she know there’s someone else planning for her to lose it all! The end of the book was so shocking and to say I didn’t see it coming after all the hours of reading thrillers and figuring out the plot it was definitely a nice surprise and then awesome read! They have so many thriller riders that it is hard unless you already know them to pick out a good one but Liz Lawler is definitely an author I feel like him depend on I love her books and this one was no exception she truly is on my list of great thriller writers. I want to think Bookoucher and Net Galley for my free Ark copy please forgive any mistakes as I am blind and dictate my review.
Nurse Kate is taken by surprise when the police show up at her door looking for her husband, airline pilot Mark, due to his possible connection with the murder of a young woman in Barcelona--the location of his most recent flight.
While Kate struggles to understand what happened, Mark is run down and lands in the ICU, leaving Kate to depend on Mark's coworkers and her own mother to keep life functioning as normal as possible for their son Jacob while Kate hunts for answers.
A twisty story of lies, deceit, and betrayal, the story is fast paced. While Kate wasn't my favorite character, and a few items were a bit too broad to figure out myself, the story was still worth the listen. Narration at 2x still conveyed emotion and was easy to listen to throughout.
Overall: 4 stars
I'll tell my students about: language, sex, alcohol, murder/death, child abuse, drugs
**Thank you to NetGalley and Bookouture Audio for the free ALC. All opinions expressed are my own.**
Mark was a pilot. He was accused to murder a British young lady in Barcelona. The young lady was his colleague, but Mark said he was innocent.
Kate who married to Mark. She trusted her husband, but still she knew he was not totally honest. Mark was hiding secrets.
Later Mark had a car accident and got coma. The police said it was an accident but was that true?
The whole story was strongly focused on Kate. Her own POV. Therefore I had to be patient to wait for the reveal, whether Mark was innocent or he’s guilty. For me this was a slow-burnt thriller. It went faster in the second half of the book. The twist at the end was surprising!
Many thanks to NetGalley, bookouture and the author for my copy!
Kate is an ER doctor and married to the love of her life Mark, a pilot and they have a 5 year old son Jacob. They seem to have the perfect marriage until the cops are at her door accusing Mark of murder of a former coworker in Barcelona. Very soon after this, Mark is struck by an unknown car and left for dead and in a coma. His best friend Robert and colleague Olivia step into help Kate out. But are they really who they say they are? The police don't seem to be getting any answers so it's up to Kate to search for the truth . There are alot of twists and turns in the book and keeps you guessing until the very end. It was a fast read and a good thriller. Thank you to Netgalley for a free copy for an honest review
Thanks NetGalley, Bookouture and Liz Lawler for an advanced reader copy in exchange of my honest review.
First of all I loved the originality of the idea, it wasn't your typical cliched psychological thriller. The setting and the characters were fresh and unpredictable. I enjoyed the writing style and the tense pace. It kept me on edge till the end.
Olivia, Robert and Mark! who should we trust? Who is not telling the truth?
