Hunted is the first in the Dauntless MC series, which is just getting started. Grace is a gutsy pro bono attorney who is hell bent on bringing down a dirty ICE agent. In order to do that she has to convince Talon, who has been wrongfully convicted, and is serving time, to let her represent him. Talon is the treasurer of the Dauntless MC. He is a mountain of a man, American Indian, with raven black hair down to his ass – he is of course heart-stoppingly beautiful. When Talon and Grace appear before the Judge making allegations against a federal agent, the Judge releases Talon into Grace’s custody. Grace takes Talon to the MC compound, thinking she will just drop him off – Talon insists she come meet the MC president, Tiny (who is, of course, anything but tiny). Tiny decrees that Grace – “Lawyer Lady” – will be Talon’s property. Grace isn’t really sure what this means, and all Talon tells her at first is that she’s going to be spending some time at the compound (news to her!) and the compound can be a crazy place – that by making Grace Talon’s property it will be hands off to anyone but Talon.
Grace leaves the compound confused by her feelings for Talon. He’s a client, which means in no uncertain terms – hands off – and he’s a biker, a lifestyle that Grace knows nothing about. Grace’s colleague, Luke (who is clearly in love with Grace – clearly to everyone but Grace) has told Grace that the Dauntless MC are a criminal enterprise even if they are innocent of the crime that sent Talon to prison. Grace doesn’t stay confused for long (what a relief!), and she doesn’t worry about the serious ethical violation of being romantically involved with a current client either. There’s nothing non-or even semi-consensual about the sex between Grace and Talon – Grace is all in.
Grace grew up with a single mother after her father left them to start a new family, and she immediately takes to the strong sense of family and community in the MC compound. The MC for its part welcomes Grace with open arms, all except for one little sweet-butt named Red who has had her sights set on Talon.
Meanwhile, the dirty ICE agent, Derrick, is busy playing BDSM games with his partner Justine, a trust fund baby who would never have looked twice at his bad boy persona if he hadn’t blackmailed her concerning her ill-advised correspondence with a serial killer. That same serial killer attempted correspondence with Grace in an effort to entice her take on his case. Unfortunately, that serial killer has broken out of jail.
All of the above storylines are satisfactorily wrapped up without feeling rushed about 60% of the way through the book, but the story, like life, seamlessly moves on. This is a good MC book, and bodes well for this new series. I gave Hunted 5 stars for lots of hot sex and lots of tight storytelling – this is Suzanne Steele at her absolute best.
