The only reason this is a 3 star instead of a 2 star review is because the story promises to lead to something better. The Matriarch and the Wonder War looks interesting. This storyline is not. The whole plotting is a weak bridge between the Sovereign storyline and the Wonder War storyline. DC should just leave Wonder Woman in the hands of Greg Rucka; the only modern writer for WW that I respect. I feel like I should reread Cheetah and Cheshire Rob the Watchtower again so I can calm down.

Y estamos hablando de Mouse Man. O sea, Mouse Man.

Divisive is a good word for Tom King. The guy's either someone's favourite, or someone's most hated writer ever. I tend to swing more towards the former camp, and I could tell from the first issue of The Island Of Mice & Men that this story wasn't going to be changing anyone's minds.

First up though, there's a two-part detour to Mount Olympus while Diana solves a mystery with the help of Batman, which is good fun, and a nice palette cleanser after the more dire stuff in the previous issues. And the final two issues of the trade work much the same, with guest creatives Stephanie Williams (of Nubia fame) and Jeff Spokes (of being a hell of a good artist fame) popping in to tell a hell of a good Discord story as Diana tries to relax on Paradise Island.

And then there's the mice themselves. King's distinctive style for telling Diana's stories, mostly talking around her rather than getting into her head directly, comes in handy here as she finds herself on an island ruled by, you guessed it, Mouse Man and his cohorts. This is basically a cult gone to the extremes, with literally everyone only allowed to say a few select words. Diana tears through the place trying to find her quarry, and in the process proves once again that she can be compassionate and kick ass all at the same time. Plus Daniel Sampere draws all of these issues so they look absolutely gorgeous.

Second verse, same the first, sorta - while it looked like King's Wonder Woman was going to wrap up after Fury, it seems he's got a lot more to say about everyone's favourite Amazon. And Mouse Man knows, mice have ears, so we should be listening.

There is not much to recommend this book, nor is there much here to vilify it. This book is neither here nor there. The main story is some light fluff that doesn't really live up to its promise, about a despotic cult leader ruling an island where people aren't allowed to speak freely, and a bunch of oversized mice. He crosses paths with the Amazonian Princess and comes out the worse for it. And that's about all there is to it. It doesn't feel like it is part of the larger story arc, and there is no real explanation for the large rodents or the subjugated populace. Wonder Woman is also a mother now and goes into battle with her child strapped to her back - hence the cover art. The book ends with two throwaway stories. The first story introduces a new villain, and the last one is a lame girl-power tale involving the forgettable Strife. The Greek Goddess who likes to mess with people for giggles. None of these stories stand out or add to the overall story arc. The writing remains heavy-handed, if not as preachy as before. However, it is still confusing and seems unnatural. The artwork is also only so-so. The two-star rating on this site is defined as 'it was ok' and that describes this book perfectly. There was not enough here for me to dislike it, and there was certainly nothing here for me to love. It was just OK.

Your enjoyment of this beautifully drawn book will be directly linked to your tolerance for Tom King’s “look how clever I am” approach to storytelling which has the vast majority of characters saying “Mice have ears. Mouse Man knows.” as the only dialogue for literally 4 whole issues.

Sometimes Tom King is brilliant. Sometimes he gets lost up his own rear end. This one is more of the latter than the former.

My least favorite of King's run so far. The foreshadowing to Wonder War did not for me, and took away from the main narrative. I also don't know if we gained any new perspectives on Wonder Woman's character through Mouse Man main story that goes for most of this volume. The action is great, but we are 4 volumes in now so Wonder Woman kicking ass isn't noteworthy nor is it as cool many issues in to see her say 'no thank you' mid-fight. Cute baby though. Take care of your baby, Diana! [she will]

A bridge from the king of America to Wonder War that seems quirky but has hidden messages about control.

The mice story kind of weird but it’s actually really good and the setup this series is heading into is very intriguing.
