One of the most prolific writers in comics, particularly in the Silver Age. He took over scripting duties on Wonder Woman after William Moulton Marston's death, and handled the character's transition from the Golden to the Silver Age. He also created Barry Allen, the second Flash, for editor Julius Schwartz's superhero revival of 1956, as well as writing and editing DC's pioneering war titles.
His creations include Sgt. Rock, the Unknown Soldier, Barry Allen, Ragman, the Losers, Black Canary, the Metal Men, Poison Ivy, Enemy Ace, the Suicide Squad, and Rex the Wonder Dog.

This collection features DC's Western-themed comics published from 1970 - 1973. It's an effective choice--showcasing the last of the more traditional Western comics and the first of the more brutal, Spaghetti-Western-influenced stories typified by the character Jonah Hex.

We get the last story featuring the Revolutionary War tales of Tomahawk and his Rangers, before the book jumped ahead a few decades to feature tales of an elderly Tomahawk and his son Hawk. The book "All-Star Western" features a short-lived series about a Texas Ranger whose son has turned outlaw, pitting them against each other in each issue. The last tale in the series involves a plot twist that I'm not sure makes complete sense. But to be fair, these stories were originally read two months apart, so plot inconsistencies would not have been as noticeable as when reading them in a collection.

Later issues of "All-Star Western" introduced the character of El Diablo and, eventually, Jonah Hex. DC Westerns took on a different, earthier feel to them. Without ignoring the value of the earlier stories, its when Jonah Hex arrived that the company's Westerns really began to shine. Hex, a violent and scarred bounty hunter, leaves a trail of corpses behind him, but also reluctantly displays a sense of right and wrong--even a sense of compassion--on occasion. He's a complex and three-dimensional character, with John Albano's scripts and Tony DeZuniga's art bringing his adventures to vivid life.

Other artists showcased in this volume include Joe Kubert, Gil Kane, Frank Thorne and Sam Glanzman. So the book contains work by some of the best artists working at that time. Most of the stories are well-written and a few have weak scripts, but the pencil work is uniformly superb.

These are peak comics in here from the art to the writing it’s authentic as westerns get. Features characters such as Hawk, El Diablo, and Jonah Hex in their Wild West stories. Can’t get much better than this. 1970-1973. 10/10
