I have generally been a fan of existentialism as promulgated by Camus, but I looked forward to learning more about one of its principal advocates. I found this biography of de Beauvoir pretty disappointing on that point. The author tends not to challenge or even critique de Beauvoir's thoughts or actions, not even when the protagonist clearly doubles back on herself. In addition, de Beauvoir's life tends to boil down to and revolve around a couple of powerful love affairs even though the text continuously asserts the powerful life of the mind that drives her life. The work tends to progress in fits and starts, circling back over the same episodes or periods of time without clear integration or reasoning. The divisions of the biography have no obvious logic, and the incessant name-dropping fails to convey anything other than that de Beauvoir spent a lot of time around a lot of people; what this meant to her or to them tends to go unexplored. On the bright side, I did significantly improve my knowledge of 20th century French history, so that was nice.

Simone De Beauvoir: A Life, a Love Story

My summer with Simone De Beauvoir. I began my Journey with Simone with this biography which was an excellent introduction to who Simone was and where she came from. I enjoyed this biography and at the end, it gave me a good foundation of who this woman was. My only regret at the end was that I would never meet this remarkable woman.
